Zev gave another nod of his head, both at Rhys' answer and the determination in the younger man's eye. "Smart. If you need more Pokémon or want to train them in battle, there are plenty of opportunities with other grunts like yourself." [break][break]

Smoke the Gengar, having grown bored of the conversation, floated to the other end of the conference room to examine the coffee machine set up on a side table. [break][break]

Zev made no indication that he'd noticed his Pokémon's exploration. Instead, he sifted through his mental file cabinet of Team Rocket's members to recall what information he'd read about Rhyhs. [break][break]

"Let's talk about your recruitment into our organization. You're a pharmacist, right?" the Beast asked. "What are your goals within Team Rocket?"

As the ominous words of the prophecy rang out in the air, Kyurem's FUSION FLARE lit up the battlefield. Zev stood in front of Neffatari Nzingha to protect her, but thankfully, Keldeo's expert maneuver redirected the enormous flame away from them. [break][break]

A familiar roar heralded the return of Zev's Charizard, badly burned. He recalled her into a Pokéball, turning just in time to catch sight of strange Pokémon crawling out of the nearby chasm. [break][break]

Team Rocket's comms crackled to life in his ear. Both Elisabeth Fiorelli and THEO BECKETT ordered attacks, though from Zev's position, he watched as they targeted different foes. mint frost mentioned the Swords of Justice, but Zev couldn't say he knew what they were, either. [break][break]

It didn't matter. A swarm of the mechanical Pokémon rushed at him, Nenet, and oscar clayton. [break][break]

"Hatterene, defend our position!" Zev shouted. The witch teleported before the trio and their Pokémon and lashed out with her tentacle in a BRUTAL SWING. [break][break]

Taking another look at the Miraidon, Zev had to agree: it did look like a Cyclizar. "You're right." [break][break]

Which prompted him to wonder if this scenario had any relation to the first one. [break][break]

But he had no time to contemplate the ulterior motives of the RKS machine. Lulu's Porygon unleashed an attack on the second Miraidon. The Rocket Beast released his Shadow Nidoking from a Pokéball. Roaring in challenge, the horned Pokémon struck the intruding Miraidon with SHADOW BOLT. [break][break]

Eventually, they won the battle, but not without suffering injuries of their own. Zev recalled his Nidoking as the Miraidon urged him and Lulu to hop onto its back. He climbed on, helping the woman up behind him if she wished. [break][break]

The flora of the Terastal cavern was wholly unfamiliar to Zev, nor did he care to examine it. He was more interested in where Miraidon was leading them. [break][break]

Unfortunately, before he could find out, the simulation ended. Both the glittering cave and the strange Pokémon faded away, leaving them standing in the nothingness of the virtual world.

Zev was about to point out that Nomi's plan was too vague to be of any actual use, but when she mentioned the Z-move, he tilted his head in curiosity. "What is the Z-move supposed to do?" he asked. [break][break]

The scene around them rippled and changed. As he waited for his associate's reply, he scanned their surroundings. Nothing stood out to him as a threat, so he focused on the first object to immediately grab his attention. [break][break]

The Shadow Persian looked near death. Regarding it with an impassive gaze, Zev stood over it. "This Pokémon is going to die very soon," he told Nomi as he watched its slow and labored breathing. "Better to leave it and explore the rest of this area." [break][break]

He turned away from the Pokémon and looked out over the glittering lake. Strangely, its waters seemed to beckon at him, as if it promised treasure in its depth. [break][break]

This thread takes place immediately after the Father Winter: Branch and Bauble threads Synchronicity and The Light That Burns the Sky.

"Whatever happened wasn't real. This is real. You and me, right here, right now." [break][break]

The words should have comforted Nenet as Zev held her in his arms. Father Winter the Second had found them both, it seemed, and allowed them to witness a timeline different from the one in which they lived. A timeline that, for all Zev knew, was confusing and frightening. [break][break]

But instead of Nenet's body releasing its tension with relief, she began to weep. [break][break]

Immediately, Zev withdrew from the embrace to examine her face and body. "What's wrong?" he asked, concern evident in his frown and voice, though the latter possessed a roughness that ran counter to his words. "Are you hurt?" [break][break]

He didn't see any obvious wounds, however. No blood nor rips in her clothing, either.

Without prompting, Rhys specified areas where he knew he needed improvement: heightened awareness of his surroundings and Pokémon better trained for combat. A single nod of Zev's head indicated his agreement with that assessment. [break][break]

"Good. Not many grunts are so self-aware," the Beast commented. [break][break]

Not that he was impressed. When it came to grunts, the bar for standards was dangerously close to the ground, as evidenced by the defections that continued to plague the organization. [break][break]

No, to properly impress Team Rocket's leadership, a grunt had to possess the initiative for self-improvement, the actual ability to improve, and ambition to rise above their station. Many possessed one or two of the three, but not all of them. [break][break]

Zev crossed his arms over his chest. "How would you address these deficiencies? If you were to carry out this kind of job again, what would you do differently?"

Another trip to the Ultra Crater meant another visit to the campsite Zev and Nenet had established on their first expedition into that wild region. The modifications the man had made to the abandoned cottage had held; the equipment stored there had not suffered any damage. [break][break]

While Nenet checked the recordings, Zev walked around the building, looking for anything amiss. At his side floated his Flutter Mane. [break][break]

"Nothing unusual out here," he said upon reentering the cottage. "It doesn't look like anything has passed through the area." [break][break]

Unbeknownst to him, however, a small Pokémon that avoided leaving any trace of its arrival had followed him and Nenet to the cottage. It flitted close to one of the open windows and hovered just out of sight.

The battle swiftly turned in Zev and Barnaby's favor. Screams filled the air as soldiers were trampled under foot and tread; the heat of the sun above amplified the familiar stench of death. Zev was numb to it. Armored beneath his clothing, he walked the battlefield without fear. [break][break]

But when the ground gave way and the enormous mouth of an Orthworm closed around them, not even his armor could stop it. Darkness closed around Zev, even as half a dozen tendrils of crystalline spikes buried themselves into the Pokémon's esophagus. [break][break]

An earsplitting bellow shook the walls around him. The Orthworm thrashed about in agony as Necrozma's Avatar defied the very notion of death. Zev began to climb up the slimy tunnel, spikes digging into flesh.

As a Rocket Beast, Zev had no office of his own on the submarine. Instead, he chose a conference room for the mission debrief about to take place with Rhys Collins. The two men had just returned from a job infiltrating a Mossdeep City Pokémon Center. Though it had ended successfully, the grunt's lack of experience had been obvious. [break][break]

Which wasn't surprising, if Zev were honest. Most grunts fumbled with their first few missions. To minimize risk, they were always paired with more experienced members of Team Rocket, sometimes even upper brass. And the jobs were always straightforward and simple. [break][break]

So Zev knew it was pointless to berate Rhys for his shortcomings. Instead, he took a seat at the conference table and gestured to a chair, indicating to the younger man that he should do the same. [break][break]

In a corner of the room, Zev's Gengar hovered near the ceiling, watching with eerie red eyes. [break][break]

"The mission was a success, so good job," the Beast said, though his voice lacked any warmth that usually accompanied words of praise. "What did you think of it, as your first task for Team Rocket? Did you find it challenging or easy, for example?" [break][break]

He tilted his head, giving Rhys his full attention. Any lump of iron could be forged into a deadly weapon with enough patience and the right hand guiding it. Whether Zev could draw the potential from Rhys' crude form was yet to be seen.

Just as Zev and Zacian reached Eternatus, prepared to clash with it, the scene transformed. Zev's crystalline claws smashed into a sprawling wall of a Terastal cavern. The impact shocked him enough to snap him out of his ravenous bloodlust. [break][break]

"Where are we?" he asked no one in particular, though he noticed Lulu in the corner of his eye. Or her reflection, anyway. [break][break]

Taking a step back, Zev took in the scene around them: gleaming crystal and the image of a Pokémon he had never seen before. Miraidon, the simulation informed them. The Beast committed its form to memory. [break][break]

With the way Legendary Pokémon seemed to congregate in Hoenn, he had no doubt knowledge of this one would prove useful one day. [break][break]

"Do you know anything about this Pokémon?" he asked, turning to Lulu. [break][break]

Regardless of her answer, a second one appeared, heralded by the thunderous roar of jet engines. Zev turned to face it in the same motion as the first Miraidon. The two Pokémon rumbled at each other, the sound reminiscent of planes taking flight. [break][break]

He set his jaw. "Be ready for anything, Flint." [break][break]

Curiously, it seems paired with you.[break][break]

A roar rattles down the tunnel. Another Miraidon hovers toward you in ultimate form, its jet engines pulsing blue and electrical bolts sparking from its metallic plating.[break][break]

You're in the middle of a territorial dispute and there's no way out.

Zev had expected to satisfy Theo's interest with the demonstrations of gravity manipulation. Of his newest abilities, that one was easiest for him to replicate because of how much he used it on the Megalopolans and their city. [break][break]

The other two, however, were more instinctual. When he'd used them in that other universe, adrenaline had fueled their use. His body had acted on its own accord, or so it seemed. Zev was not about to rule out the notion that Necrozma may have been guiding him then, too. [break][break]

"I know of two other new powers," he said to Theo. "One allows me to summon darkness. It's not the same as my ability to absorb light." [break][break]
