As she trudged under Petalburg Woods' shadowy canopy, Ruby thought back to the recent Rocket meeting. Why couldn't they have picked this place instead of freaking Ghost Mountain for their Primal Point siege? Sure, it was dark, and others may have jumped at every shiver of the shadows, but Ruby knew what she was getting into here. When spirits were involved, though? Who knew what the hell would happen? It wasn't like Ruby could just punch those problems away, either.

[break][break]She shook her head, scattering those thoughts to the whispering winds. Focus. You're here for the swarm, not to bitch about Rocket's plans.

[break][break]Not many people in their right mind would willingly wander this far into the woods when there were reports of horrifying creatures terrorizing people, but Ruby wanted some of that terror on her side. These Bigfoot of the woods would make an excellent addition to her team with their strength and intimidating looks. (Bigfoot was such a lame urban legend, Ruby thought. The chupacabra was way cooler and actually did things besides show up in blurry-ass pictures.)

[break][break]The chill of eyes on her made a grin spread across her face. Perfect. Footsteps began to race toward her, disturbing the leaves that littered the earth. Just before they got too close, Ruby spun around and threw a Dusk Ball.

As the votes came in, Ruby felt herself... not exactly relax, but her tension stopped being borderline painful, at least. She still had her doubts about Littleroot, but at least it wasn't Mossdeep.

[break][break]Isaac Merlo also knew that, whether they liked it or not, Rocket were the bad guys. He had another good point, too: Sure, they could force some respect into people if they screwed up, but it'd be easier to show they were capable in the first place. Ugh, why did Isaac have to be right about this? He was supposed to be that overly dramatic clown that Ruby could laugh at, not someone actually competent and reliable.

[break][break]"You say that like we're gonna go in so half-cocked that the League will just wipe the floor with us," Ruby said, grabbing at something to contradict him on. "No way in hell we'd let that happen."

[break][break]ana fell's statement that they were purging the old bloodthirsty Rockets made her want to laugh. Ruby knew she wasn't the only one willing to get blood on her hands around here. Though maybe Isaac's girlfriend (Ruby still couldn't wrap her head around that) meant those who just wanted violence for the sake of violence. Not even Ruby understood people like that. Force was meant to be used for a purpose, not just for the hell of it.

[break][break]And then Eris Halla suddenly shouted with the fury of someone who had lost everything. Ruby's eyes widened for a moment, but even when they relaxed, the shock was evident on her face. She didn't know anything about this kid, but she could make a few guesses. Her heart broke for this child. Martín del Mar called for her to be "respectful" and "do better," and Ruby's fist trembled at her side. She was a child. She was a fucking child, so why was she here in this hellhole?

[break][break]Probably for the same reason Ruby was. And that made her sick to her stomach.

[break][break]mint frost actually had a lot of really reasonable things to say about the Littleroot invasion. The contrast between Mint's carefree, social-media-addict personality and this more analytical side made Ruby dizzy. Though his next question—whose side this literal child was on—snapped her back into coherence. She glared.

[break][break]She whipped her head toward kepler brueshaber when he started to laugh. "What the hell's so funny?!" she snapped, nerves raw. She had the decency to feel a little bit bad when it turned out they agreed that, in his words, "people are allowed to be bothered by war crimes." "No shit," she decided on saying as she turned her glare back to Mint.

[break][break]What the role of a Beast is... Ruby had set her sights on Rocket Beasthood shortly after she'd joined. She wasn't smart enough for the administrative and planning sides, so being among the most powerful of the organization was the best she could strive for. But now she was hearing bryan delarosa threatening cruel punishment for a child's words and saying that was a Beast's role. Her fist was clenched so tight that her knuckles had gone pale.

[break][break]Isaac Merlo's next words came in muffled. He was suggesting some grand plan, but only a few words breached the surface of her river-rushing mind. The only clear thing to her was that he was voting for Mossdeep, and goddamn, did she want to punch him for that. And @elio for calling the kid a dumbass while sounding like a pompous prick. Fuck, she wished she'd brought her smokes, too. She needed one right now.

[break][break]Eris Halla's next words broke through the glass separating Ruby's head from the meeting itself. Ruby wanted to tell her to stop, to not draw the wrath of the Beasts, no matter how right she might have been. Cillian Quinn's voice cut through the air like a red-hot knife. Eris was to be ejected from the meeting. But Underboss Killian Decker offered to do it himself, offering the girl his hand. Ruby released a breath she didn't even realize she'd been holding. The Beasts' talents wouldn't be wasted on her. Still, her protective-big-sister instinct told her to check on her after the meeting, just in case.

[break][break]She didn't even realize that Eris, too, had voted for Mossdeep.

[break][break]onyx straub voiced his taciturn agreement that Velmos couldn't be trusted, and Ruby was silently grateful that somebody was on her side. He still voted for Littleroot, though, which earned him an annoyed glance. Sure, he didn't have many other options, but still.

[break][break]If Ruby was counting right, Mossdeep had less than half the votes that Littleroot did. In a perfect world, neither of them would have any votes, and Rocket would focus fully on the meteor mining (which Ruby still thought was insane) and the Mt. Pyre Primal Point (which Ruby still hated the idea of being part of). But at least with Littleroot, she wouldn't have to worry about keeping Jade safe. She still didn't cast her vote, though, not wanting to contradict her voiced distrust.

Ruby replied with a nod and a neutral "Mm" as she took another sip of her drink. Her lip curled downward for a moment at Aurelie's lack of plan, but it wasn't like Ruby had any ideas, either. "We shoulda thought that part through," she mumbled, glancing out the window. She forgot she was still dealing with an inexperienced criminal here.

[break][break]Aurelie quickly started constructing a plan, though. "Yeah, good idea," Ruby said. "Sneaking around at night is more suspicious. What about the crate, though? Pretty sure people are gonna wonder why it's going away from the warehouse."

[break][break]The solution was to get rid of the crate and toss it in the dumpster outside. "We'd better smash it up good. Don't want anyone recognizing it." She said "we," but she was fully prepared to do that part herself. It'd be a good stress reliever.

[break][break]She lifted a brow at Aurelie's lowered voice when asking about Draupadi. "Yeah?" Ruby replied, voice also lowered because talking normally was weird when the other person wasn't. "Might have to wake her up, though. We're not just gonna carry it out in the open, are we?" That would be just as suspicious as lugging the crate around, if not moreso.

[break][break]Aurelie looked the two of them up and down, then... asked for some to-go bags at the counter? Ruby blinked a few times, trying to scrub some sense into this sequence of events. "Oh," she said when Aurelie explained. "Are the bags gonna be sturdy enough for that?" Unlike Aurelie, she didn't know the specifics of the shapes and weight distributions of steel. She did at least know that a pound of steel weighed the same as a pound of feathers. She wasn't a total dumbass.

[break][break]Aurelie's yawn reminded Ruby of just how late it was. She managed to swallow her own yawn, but she could feel the exhaustion settling into her muscles. She was used to it, though. Her fluctuating schedule meant she was pretty good at sticking it out for as long as she needed and then crashing whenever she had the chance.

[break][break]"Sure, yeah," was her casual answer to Aurelie's offer to stay over, but inside, she was grateful she didn't have to book a hotel room or go back to Mossdeep.

[break][break]As she followed the smith back behind the tapestry, an impish grin rose on Ruby's lips. "'Unaccustomed to crime,' my ass. You're the one who drew out the map and came up with all that crazy shit to get the guards off our asses."

Rustboro was pretty far from Ruby's usual stomping grounds, but a job was a job. It just figured that cracks spider-webbed across the sky while she was there, summoning a stormy space-time distortion. She could have joined the evacuees and just not dealt with this, but honestly? Beating down some space-and-time-displaced Pokémon was pretty fun. Plus, it was good training.

[break][break]The air fizzled, and a familiar shape took form: a Kleavor, the Pokémon that Grimm had evolved into inside one of these distortions. Ruby smirked and tossed out Grimm's Poké Ball. "Let's show this thing who's boss," she said.

[break][break]The two Pokémon's Black Augurite axes clashed with glorious clangs. Chips of their bodies clattered to the ground, leaving sharp points behind on the combatants' axes. Ruby commanded Grimm to use Swords Dance, and the other Kleavor took the opening to slash with a Stone Axe. Grimm's eyes flashed with rage, and with a cry, she lunged at her doppelganger with a strengthened Stone Axe of her own. The wild fell to the ground, unconscious.

[break][break]"Nice," Ruby said. Grimm, her battle frenzy quelled, nodded. With that done, Ruby grabbed one of those weird Green Shards and headed out.

At least Elisabeth Fiorelli seemed to get it: Even if they tried to be diplomatic, Rocket was Public Enemy #1. Nobody in their right mind would trust them. They operated on fear and terror, and it'd be easier for them to stick to that. Ruby knew it'd be easier for herself, at least. Martín del Mar's stance was more nuanced, but Ruby didn't really care if people took Rocket for fools. They could just prove the opposition otherwise by force, much like THEO BECKETT and mint frost said. But it wasn't her call to make, nor did she really want to. For now, she'd nod to show her approval when someone gained it and wait for Walsh's word on all this.

[break][break]She stared at mint frost for a few moments after his reply. Shit, he actually had a point. But rather than admit that, she shrugged. "Good luck with that." She wasn't terminally online like some people, so she didn't fully understand the power of the hashtag.

[break][break]When Walsh spoke again, it was with those flowery words that made Ruby's eyebrow twitch (minus his use of the word "po-dunk," which made Ruby's brain hitch). Arceus, parsing this stuff was a pain in the ass. The gist seemed to be that Rocket needed to take every opportunity they could and not shy away. At least he seemed to agree that there would always be people against Rocket, no matter what they did. On the other hand, if they made the League look bad, then where else could people turn?

[break][break]After all, that was one reason Ruby had joined their ranks.

[break][break]"Fuck," she hissed out once the votes were tallied. She recalled Arachne and crossed her arms, scowling. All she could do now was hope she didn't get picked for the Primal Point operation.

[break][break]Her eyes widened when she saw who was brought out. She didn't recognize him personally, but she knew damn well he was a Megalopolan before Walsh even said so. Her gaze narrowed. The Ultra Beast War had killed her father, paralyzed her sister, and shattered her family. Seeing a Megalopolan general with her own eyes made her blood boil.

[break][break]"I don't trust a damn thing he says," Ruby said, mostly to her immediate group. "I don't care how 'compliant' he's been when he's still in chains." And knowing there were even more of these things hiding in Hoenn, specifically Littleroot... "Bastard just wants to go after whatever's in Littleroot and leave us in the dust."

[break][break]Was she making a pretty big assumption there? Probably. But she had every reason to believe that something like that would happen.

[break][break]She was surprised that Walsh put up another vote when people spoke against invading Littleroot, but the options made Ruby hesitate. Littleroot was out of the question when the Megalopolans were involved, but Mossdeep was a strong hell no; that's where Jade lived, and Ruby was not going to subject her sister to Team Rocket's bullshit. That just left Pacifidlog, and even Ruby could see there was no point in that one. Jaw tight, she abstained from the vote for now.

Ruby Garcia's curry entry
thread summary: Ruby joins the Splashfest fishing contest with her younger sister, Jade. It's supposed to be a family bonding moment, but then Ruby fishes up Isaac, who was scouting out the seabed for good catches. Ruby hates the idea that someone from Rocket knows about her little sister, yet Isaac and Jade get along swimmingly (pun intended). Jade even thanks him for befriending Ruby, who's been through her fair share of hardship.

why is it important?: Ruby has been terrified of anyone from Rocket finding out about her younger sister. They might try to hurt her or, worse, convert her to their cause. Ruby doesn't want that; Jade's too good for Rocket and deserves a normal life. So when Ruby fishes up one of her coworkers, she's worried her greatest fears have come true. Yet not only does Isaac bond with the most important person in Ruby's life, but he also plays along with Ruby's "freelancing" story since she doesn't want Jade to know about her involvement with Rocket. Isaac and Ruby have had an interesting relationship on-site that's been a blast to write, and this thread, despite being a simple event fishing thread, helped develop it.

"Yeah, cunning," Ruby said with a wry grin. So much of the heist had been off the cuff that Ruby was surprised it had actually worked. "They'll definitely see that hole in the fence, but I think we took enough back streets to shake them off. Good thinking on the crumbs; those Wingull bought us some time." She flashed Aurelie a more sincere, albeit brief, smile.

[break][break]As shocked as Ruby had been by the unexpectedly fancy décor, this place was perfect for secret meetings and whatnot. Shady places with cigar smoke diffusing dim, flickering lights were immediately suspicious to anyone with half a brain, but this? Not only did it look (and smell) a lot better, but its exotic aesthetic helped cover its more suspicious side. Partitions between the tables were cultural rather than secretive, and how many people would expect such a nice little boba café to have a secret side door?

[break][break]She nodded at Aurelie's reassurance. "Guess that's why it's here." In a sense, that was her way of confirming her trust, even if it was tenuous.

[break][break]Aurelie didn't directly answer Ruby's question. Instead, she led the duo through a narrow passageway ending in a trapdoor to the main café area. Now this was closer to what Ruby imagined when she thought of criminal hideouts. The main café area looked much the same, barring the presence of an order counter staffed by a Clefairy. Aurelie ordered and paid for both of them before Ruby could object. Ruby tossed in a tip of her own.

[break][break]The drink's soft lilac color didn't feel like it fit Ruby at all, but she took a drink, bracing herself for overwhelming sweetness. Surprisingly, the flavor was more mild, a creamy vanilla mixed with something a bit more... earthy, Ruby guessed? She didn't know; she wasn't a drink connoisseur.

[break][break]"Huh, not bad," she said before taking another sip. It was refreshing, even, drowning out the stressors of that night. She glanced around to make sure no one was listening in before asking, "So how are we getting the stuff back to your shop? We could try to throw them off if they're still on our asses or something." She wasn't sure how far the smithy was from where they currently were, which would factor a lot into their escape plan.

Ruby's cheeks were dusted red at Aurelie Lefevre's aborted cheek kiss that turned into a quick handshake. Had she winked, too? It was hard to tell with the eyepatch and all. Ruby didn't say anything, but her confusion was likely written all over her face; she just hoped it was too dark in this artificial sandstorm for Aurelie to see too many details. Belatedly, she remembered that some parts of the world used kisses on the cheek as friendly greetings. That was probably what Aurelie had been aiming for, yeah.

[break][break]"Yeah, this plan's fucking crazy," Ruby whispered, having regained her composure. She didn't know if their leader was that sure of all these pieces fitting together or just insane.

[break][break]She watched as the votes came in, mouth twisting into a grimace at how popular Mt. Pyre had gotten. Aurelie was right that they'd have to follow orders but not like it, but that didn't mean Ruby couldn't try to make those orders more bearable. She raised her voice: "You're all forgetting something: Mt. Pyre is a graveyard. Do you really wanna deal with the League and a bunch of pissed-off ghosts?"

[break][break]Her hand hovered over Arachne's Poké Ball as she looked between two voting points. She liked Ceri Glynn's idea of causing a cave-in at Granite Cave, but unless a lot of other people were on board, its one-and-a-half votes wouldn't stack up to Mt. Pyre's twelve or so. Opinions on attacking Petalburg seemed mixed. Some seemed to think that it would spread the League's resources even thinner, but others predicted that the close proximity to the Littleroot siege would give the League the advantage. Ruby found herself agreeing with the former group. If they wanted more resources for one area, they'd have to draw from others, right? But sticking to one region would mean that region would have to use more resources or draw from others, which could take time. That was how Ruby saw it, at least. With that settled in her mind, she sent her Araquanid to stand by the Petalburg grunt.

[break][break]Quite a few other people were bringing up Rocket's public image. "How many people actually trust us, though?" she asked. Efforts were being made to sway Pacifidlog to Rocket's side, but would they actually work, even without these attacks? Ruby didn't have much faith in that, but she also wasn't a diplomat.

Ruby crossed her arms as she listened to mint frost's reasoning. "Who says they'd even accept our help, anyway?" she asked. Sure, they shared the same goal of, you know, not dying to a meteor, but it was the aftermath that Ruby was more worried about. Once they were no longer in danger, did the League really want to have that knife pressed to their throat? And what would they demand in return if they did accept Rocket's help?

[break][break]There was movement in her peripheral as onyx straub pushed his way through the crowd to stand next to her. He didn't say anything, which didn't surprise Ruby at all. She gave him a curt nod of acknowledgement and went back to paying attention to the meeting.

[break][break]Just in time, too, since their leader was speaking now. He was right that Ruby was surprised that he trusted the League's plan, but his flowery language held a good point. The League was trying just as hard to not die as Rocket was, and underestimating them was a bad idea. This Maldacena person was apparently a member of the Dark Triad who was sabotaging his organization to see what would happen after the meteor was driven away. And the Big Boss wanted to follow suit by sabotaging the League's efforts for Rocket's own ends.

[break][break]They would lay siege to one of the Primal Points that the League was setting up to teleport the meteoroid away, thus giving Rocket time to mine the meteoroid for minerals and information. Not only that, but they'd also be launching an operation in Littleroot to spread the League thin. Ruby's eyebrows raised at this ballsy plan. If it had been anyone else suggesting it, Ruby would have called them crazy. But this was Declan Walsh, and Ruby liked having her head attached firmly to her neck, so she kept quiet.

[break][break]Dione Sutoringu caught her attention with her agreement, and Ruby nodded back. She wondered if this woman had any family members she was thinking of. Or maybe she was just one of the few sane people in Rocket who thought that kids shouldn't be joining them.

[break][break]Others had either the guts or the dumbassery to speak against their leader's plan. Given that Isaac Merlo was one of them, Ruby figured it was a bit of both. Luckily for them, Walsh calmly clarified. Ruby wondered who would actually volunteer to be sent up to the meteor, but it seemed that some people actually wanted to get up close and personal with the giant rock threatening to squash them all like insignificant little pests. Weirdos.

[break][break]Military tactics and strategies and all that were beyond her. Ruby had always left others to do the brainy work while she swept in to take out whatever targets were in her way. A lot of good points were being floated around; she'd have to think about her vote for a minute. She knew one thing for sure, though: She wasn't voting for Mt. Pyre. She was not fucking around with ghosts again.

Ruby's jaw tightened when Aurelie couldn't immediately come up with a good place to hide. She'd been relying on Aurelie's greater knowledge of the city to take the lead; it wasn't like Ruby spent a lot of time Lilycove. Fortunately, Aurelie thought of something, though her next question had Ruby whispering, "What?" She'd never had boba tea before, and she didn't know how that was relevant.

[break][break]She glanced behind her at the shouts rising from the warehouse. She, too, wanted to run, but that wouldn't be easy with the crate between them. Instead, she'd have to keep her eyes peeled and one hand ready to reach for her Poké Balls. Aurelie's knowledge of Lilycove's layout led them through darkened side streets and alleyways until they reached a well-hidden side entrance. Aurelie punched in the passcode and hurried inside, Ruby in tow.

[break][break]Ruby paused once the door was closed behind her. This hadn't been what she'd expected from a hideaway with a passcode-protected side entrance hidden in an alleyway. Hoenn really was built different, wasn't it? According to Aurelie, this was part of a boba café, which explained the cozy wood paneling. Ruby chewed on the fact that she didn't personally know the owner.

[break][break]"Long as she's on our side," she decided, also pulling off her balaclava. "We've just gotta lay low until we know we're not being followed, then we can bring this back to the shop." She tapped the crate with her foot. Gently, of course, since it was full of steel. A broken toe would be devastating right now. And stupid.

[break][break]She had no idea what boba tea tasted like, but screw it, robbery was thirsty work. "Sure, why not? What do you usually get?"

A Gemstone Shining In the Rough

I have no idea how to format this, so here we go:

I'm looking for someone to play Ruby Garcia's younger sister, Jade. I've NPC'd her a couple of times (most notably here), but I want to do more with the sisters plot-wise.

Jade, currently 16 years old, was born blind. Given the dangerous nature of her home region, Orre, her parents thought it would be best if she were raised in an environment that wasn't overrun with crime syndicates. An undetermined number of years ago (at least by early 2019), the Garcias moved to Verdanturf in Hoenn to start fresh. The full story can be found in Ruby's app, but importantly, Jade sustained spinal damage during the Ultra Beast War that paralyzed her from the waist down. Whether that was temporary or permanent shall be left up to the player.

Jade currently lives in a Mossdeep apartment with Ruby, who's essentially been raising her for the past two years. Their mother is likely still somewhere in Verdanturf; Ruby has cut all ties with her, but whether or not Jade has will also be left up to her player. Generally, Jade is the quiet, bookish type who wants to do well in school so she can help support what's left of her fractured family when she grows up. Her love of mythology has given her and Ruby a habit of naming their Pokémon after legendary deities, monsters, heroes, etc. Two of her Pokémon have appeared or been mentioned in her canon so far: Atlas the Machamp, who helps/helped around the house when Jade became paralyzed, and Camazotz the Zubat, whom Ruby caught for Jade back in Orre. You don't have to use these Pokémon, and I'm open to suggestions/retcons if needed.

Other than that and her expressed love and appreciation for her sister, I want to leave Jade's personality fairly open. With Ruby abandoning her budding career in breeding and training service Pokémon to do "freelance work," there are a lot of possibilities. Is Jade truly ignorant of what Ruby is really doing? Does she suspect that Ruby is involved in shady activities like she was back in Orre? Has she somehow discovered the truth? And how will she feel if she does know? Understanding? Disappointed? Angry? Will she want to join Rocket despite Ruby's best attempts to dissuade her, or will they end up on opposite sides of the faction conflict?

Her life isn't just about Ruby, though. What does she want to do with her life now that she's approaching adulthood? How does she deal with her disability and the stigma that comes with it? Is her well-mannered personality truly who she is or just a mask? What kinds of friends does she want to have? How is she coping with her family falling apart? There's probably plenty more I'm not thinking of, too.

UPDATE: Tensions have been rising between the sisters behind the scenes as Ruby tries to keep her Rocket involvement secret, but Jade's no idiot.

For the face claim, I prefer Quelaag's sister from Dark Souls. The Garcia sisters were created based on this fanart of them, after all. If you want to use a different FC, just let me know!
