"I was attacked," Nomi admitted, watching carefully for signs of recognition - of knowing - in the other woman's expression. "Unexpectedly."[break][break]
Emotions warred with reason. She ought to remain calm, continue the conversation, focus on practical next steps for their alliance. Now that illeana reyes had been chosen by Palkia, she was an even greater asset in their fight against the DRK Triad. Holo and her peers were likely throwing a hissy fit over that development, considering they had once attempted to chain the spatial dragon to their agenda much like they had the Unown.[break][break]
Honing on Illeana's assessment of her current condition, Nomi flashed her a sad, knowing smile.[break][break]
"I know what you mean," she replied softly. "After the Unown chose me, I became linked to their collective memory, to their role in creation...I can't ever go back to being the person I was before." That woman had not been so tethered to Hoenn's survival, a scientist rather than a prophet.[break][break]
"I'm glad you found them useful," she added, when Illeana brought up the research notes she'd sent. "There is still much to be discovered, so I'm hoping you will be able to expand upon them."[break][break]

Nomi froze. The hand on her arm was tight, but not aggressively so. If anything, it was steadying. Grounding. The man was calm despite her outburst, though she could hear the disappointment in his voice - and, below that, a dam yet to burst: the anger.[break][break]
One deep breath. Then another. Then another.[break][break]
Does it sound like I'm jaded? Having your loved ones thrown in a cell for months on end, tortured and prodded like cattle for information, will do that to you.[break][break]
"Greyson Connors," she realized, with genuine surprise. But why would the DRK Triad capture him? He wasn't an Avatar - as far as she knew - and he had barely begun to believe her, to reluctantly accept the merit of her mission to unite League and Rocket against a larger threat.[break][break]
Unless. Unless this wasn't their doing?[break][break]
"Turned on me?" She blinked behind the mask, confusion etched across a hidden face. "You think Rocket did this?"[break][break]
She glanced around once more. Beyond the bars of their doorless cage, she could see a circular hallway, bending off to the left and right. There was a tall, rectangular shaft in the middle, some kind of...tower?[break][break]
Other voices could be heard, a variety of emotions - from yelling to quiet, frantic whispers - though she could not immediately place any of them as familiar. There wasn't a single window or sign that they were anywhere recognizable - let alone still in Hoenn. Figures patrolled the hallway, the blue skin of Megalopolians immediately catching her attention.[break][break]
One thing was for certain: she had never seen anything like this within Rocket territory.[break][break]
"This isn't Sootopolis prison," she told Greyson, with confidence. Swallowing the awful emptiness where the Unown should have been, she focused fully on her unlikely companion and his biased assumption. "It seems we've been captured by Megalopolians, but that doesn't mean Rocket is involved."[break][break]
She removed her hands from the death grip she'd placed upon his shirt - an outfit, she realized, that reminded her somewhat of traditional Johtian clothing. Something itched at the back of her mind, a nagging sensation that she was forgetting something, which only further agitated the overwhelming sense of displacement. Her mind wasn't working as reliably as it usually did; always, she could rely on quick thinking and logical reasoning to get her out of trouble.[break][break]
Not lately. Lately, you rely too much on the Unown, a small, scared internal voice hissed, chastising. And now they're gone.[break][break]
"We need to work together," she told Greyson, recognizing there was an opportunity here, buried beneath the danger and confusion. "Instead of argue about Rocket, we should focus on escaping." She paused. "What I told you before is still true. I am not your enemy."[break][break]

Nomi's eyes snapped open.[break][break]
The first thing she noticed was the pressure. Something horribly constricting had been placed over her head - a mask? It seemed to softly thrum with power, sinister and enigmatic, and when she brought her hands up to rip it off, she found that she couldn't: for it was attached to her by some kind of chain wrapped around her neck.[break][break]
The metal - if that's what it was? - seemed to burn her fingertips, the skin tingling as she tugged on it. Attempting to keep calm, she soon realized the futility in trying to remove the entire contraption. She could still breath, so she wasn't in any immediate danger. Where am I? came her next thought, curiosity mixed with anxiety.[break][break]
The room was dark, cramped, and unfamiliar. Most importantly, parker jones was missing. Their bed was missing. Their everything was missing. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, all Nomi could see was a dingy space, sparse save for a single depressing cot, a metal desk and stool, and - [break][break]
Someone. Someone else. They, too, seemed to be wearing a mask and chain.[break][break]
Parker - !?[break][break]
But it wasn't. The voice that addressed her was deeper, more masculine. Familiar, too, she realized. But who?[break][break]
Choosing caution, she reached for Kallistatus with her mind. "Kal, I need you to - "[break][break]
Nothing. Emptiness. A terrible, heart-breaking void where the Unown should have been. The constant rhythm of their network - always present, always watching, always protecting - was missing.[break][break]
Mir? She extended her awareness, frantically searching. Alpha? Beta? Diomedes? KALLISTATUS?[break][break]
Panic gripped her, then, its chokehold far more deadly than any TOXIC CHAIN. Logic gave way to a cold dread, the fear a vortex sucking her in, and with a sudden, jerking motion, she stood - ignoring the way her limbs groaned from the effort, body fatigued, as if being drained of all strength.[break][break]
"Where are they!?" She yelled at the man, voice shaking. "What did you do with them!?"[break][break]
Her heart hammered, and she took several steps towards him. He towered over her, but she didn't care. She grabbed his shirt with sweat-soaked palms.[break][break]
"Where are the Unown!?"

Hazy, watercolor images began to bleed into concrete shapes: blades of grass, the trunk of a tree, flickering flames lapping hungrily at broken branches piled haphazardly into a makeshift dirt pit. The stocky figure of a familiar woman: her muscular arms folded, her irritable grey eyes narrowed with anxiety, a shining blue Unown-K floating by her shoulder.[break][break]
"I'm sorry," Nomi murmured weakly, automatically, knowing exactly why parker jones was pissed.[break][break]
"Where's King? Did he leave?"[break][break]
She shifted, struggling with the disorientation that always followed a period of involuntary unconsciousness. Her limbs felt heavy, her body sluggish. With an effort, she crawled to Parker. On her knees in front of the other woman, she begged forgiveness with every gesture: a gentle hand tugging on Parker's arm, too-wide eyes, shoulders slumped as if in prayer.[break][break]
"I had no other choice," she tried to explain, searching for the unwavering conviction she'd offered freya morningstar and finding the well dry. "The DRK Triad - "[break][break]
She groped for the right words. There were no right words. She was once again at the mercy of Parker's devotion, risking everything for the greater good and hoping the love of her life would be okay with it.

Nomi steadied herself as the ground continued to shake from the impact of the towering creature's footfalls. It loomed over them, toothy maw opening wide as if it intended to swallow everything in its path. Its smaller, lithe companion dashed forward, its spindly limbs twisting to conjure what looked like a void-touched FLAMETHROWER - only far more powerful.[break][break]
The three Unown swirled into action, aligning in front of Yuina and Nomi like a symbolic shield. They began to glow, and Nomi sensed their intention from her bond, feeling the power being drawn from the Unown Dimension as they channeled it into this reality. In a burst of bright white light, a sparkling transparent dome of possibility sprung up around the nightmarish beasts attempting to assault Yuina and Nomi.[break][break]

DIVINE IMMANENCE: the unown summons a domain of alternate reality that descends over a small area, trapping targets within it. For a brief period of time, any targeted Pokemon within take damage over time.

Momentarily frozen within a miniature alternate dimension, the black metal-armored creatures howled with rage. The deadly fire the smaller one had summoned pounded against the impromptu cage, cracks beginning to form far too quickly for Nomi's comfort. Stars twinkled within the dome, beautiful and deadly, pinpricks of silver energy surging forth to damage the alien Pokemon. Nomi sucked in a breath, gathering her resolve, then grabbed a Pokeball from her pack.[break][break]
"Attack them with everything you've got," she urged Yuina. "Catching them will not be easy, but we need to try. I've never seen these Pokemon before and would very much like to study them."

She tried to pay attention, but she didn't like the way Becky seemed to only address her, ignoring Parker's opinions as if they were just background noise. She was obviously judging Parker's rough-and-tumble attitude, the way she carried herself like a fighter, the crude humor that Nomi couldn't live without.[break][break]
Maisey perked up at the scent of donuts, despite her obvious exhaustion. Nomi stared up at the house, frozen in place. It was...it was cute. Not in a saccharine, over-the-top way. In a I-could-really-see-me-and-my-wife-living-here way. Except Parker wasn't her wife. Yet.[break][break]
Were they baking strawberry donuts today?[break][break]
"Coming!" She hurried inside after Becky.[break][break]
The interior didn't disappoint. Two floors, a finished basement, a small backyard. Running her fingertips along the wall - delicately, as if pressing too hard might make the whole place disappear - she followed Parker into the kitchen. White cabinets, granite countertops, cream tile backsplash. Cherry wood accents, rustic shelving, a kitchen table that seated six. The fridge did have two doors.[break][break]
"Gas burner!" Nomi declared. "Those are way better than electric." Her preference in the lab, too.[break][break]
Something else caught her eye. She oohed softly, padding over to the primary kitchen window, its sill large enough for several potted plants.[break][break]
"Perfect light," she smiled. "I could grow herbs here, for cooking."

Like the slow, steady settling of ripples across a pond, the reflected face of the former Rocket Underboss etched itself across her memory. A smile that never quite reached his eyes, a detached authority that chained itself to corporate greed, and an inclination towards secrecy and distrust.[break][break]
The paradoxical, warped Entei collapsed to the ground, singed and smoking. Nomi unlatched a Pokeball - one of the odd black ones she'd found recently, as ancient and enigmatic as the creature before her. As she threw it, she turned to regard THEO BECKETT over one shoulder.[break][break]
"No," she answered definitively. "He didn't."[break][break]

Nomi had absolutely smothered Maisey, stopping every other house or so to crouch down and scratch behind her ears. Kallistatus did not know much about the human tendency to cohabitate within physical structures, but it had drifted dutifully along nonetheless. They'd made for a rather whimsical group, a cotton candy assortment of vibrant affection traversing the streets of the Rocket-controlled city, its backdrop dreary in comparison.[break][break]
"You haven't?" Nomi asked, surprised.[break][break]
Her own home in Johto had been a multi-story ancestral unit, connected to shrine grounds just outside of Ecruteak City. Her grandmother's family had tended to the bamboo forests surrounding the shrine. It was surreal to think back to when she'd lived on that estate, only a few miles north of the Ruins of Alph.[break][break]
Had she always been destined for this?[break][break]
"But you're right," she scrunched up her nose, displeased. "This one feels cramped. And the basement isn't finished! We're going to need that for your home gym."

Here, once more, was this concept of someone - humanity? - creating Pokemon. She knew it was possible - she herself had contributed to the creation of several Type:Nulls for Rocket, not to mention Genesect - and the futuristic paradoxes were clearly robotic: the human imagination had conjured them.[break][break]
But as Nomi gazed up at Regice, she couldn't help but wonder who, specifically, could have designed such a creature. Had they been a scientist - or academic - like she was? And what was their original purpose in doing so?[break][break]
"What does it call you?" She wondered, watching Howard float down to her level once more. "Does it have a special...designation, for you?"[break][break]
He existed in that liminal space between God-blessed and regular person. The matter of Avatarship was a complicated one. Why some Pokemon chose their humans quickly, while others waited, she did not know. The mind of a God was a mystery she desperately wanted to peer into, and better understand. If that were even possible, of course.[break][break]
She'd never been good at accepting the impossible.[break][break]
Once he was secured, she focused on teleporting them back to the Rocket submarine. She trusted the Unown to bring Regice along. Sure enough, all of them reappeared a few moments later in the laboratory, as if they had never left at all.[break][break]
"You get used to it," she smiled. "Defying gravity, I mean."
