Unavoidable Battle [AZ D]

Kallistatus summoned an astral TERA BLAST, preventing two of the DRK Triad agents from attempting to follow after Navy and Isaac Merlo. It wasn't that Nomi really thought they'd be able to catch the north wind: it was just not in her nature to take any chances. She watched them go with tired eyes, feeling the weight of their good fortune for having run into her rather than two antagonistic Rockets, staring down the uphill battle that was convincing the rest of Rocket to lay off the faction conflict in favor of the greater war.[break][break]
A war that Elisabeth Fiorelli was doing a fine job of fighting, unhinged though she was in her unbridled rage. Bodies fell, wrapped up in shadowy vines that sapped their energy, blood dripping from cuts made by festering thorns.[break][break]
It would not be enough, however. Two more Triad assassins leapt from the underbrush to replace their fallen comrades, and for a heartbeat Nomi wondered if she ought to leave Elisabeth here to reckon with whatever destiny Arceus had in store for her - for having allied herself with ruination itself.[break][break]
Would doing so increase the chances of Hoenn's survival, or further damn them with the loss of an Avatar?[break][break]
Tapu Fini is out there somewhere, Nomi remembered, recalling the recent study she'd conducted on Elisabeth Fiorelli. It still has some part to play.[break][break]
Mind - and heart - made up, Nomi dashed across the cavern until she had reached Elisabeth. Doing her best to ignore Wo-Chien, who reeked of resentment, she grabbed hold of the Rocket Underboss's arm, even as she flailed to direct another attack at the DRK Triad.[break][break]
"Time to go, Elisabeth," Nomi murmured softly, preparing to teleport them to safety.[break][break]
And then they were gone.[break][break]

Diomedes seemed to light up at the mention of Dionysus - as if it were a radio receiving a very specific signal. It bobbed up and down next to Mint, as if to indicate that it recognized who the Beast was talking about. Through her connection with the Unown collective, Nomi could sense a...familiarity emanating from it. The remnants of a bond that had once existed between it and Father Winter.[break][break]
"I know for a fact that Kallistatus - " she nodded at the shiny Unown-K " - can still recognize Holo's signature, when she comes and goes from our world. I bet Diomedes can do the same for Fa - Dionysus. Together, you can look for him."[break][break]
Around them, the tera-encrusted cavern shuddered, a sudden ripple of earthy energy coming from somewhere beyond their chamber shaking the foundations of the earth. Nomi glanced down at the mining equipment, frowning. Was this area too unstable to continue digging?[break][break]
"We might want to collect these samples and move on to a different section of the cave network," she suggested, just in case.[break][break]

Nomi hopped back as the butcher assaulted her, trusting Mîr to take care of him. A blast of HIDDEN POWER pushed him backwards, just as Alba's Porygon-Z struck out with its own electric current. The knife clattered to the ground as the man staggered.[break][break]
"Good point," Nomi mused, nodding thoughtfully. "We ought to find out if the Megalopolians actually do prefer Slowpoke Tails."[break][break]
It was likely a rather consequential detail, even if it were true, but at this point, Nomi was willing to try any angle if it meant possibly uncovering useful information about their region's current plight.[break][break]
As she stepped nimbly past the passed out butcher to stand next to Alba, the simulation began to pixelate, the vacant-eyed Slowpokes rippling away as some new environment began to form.[break][break]
"Please voice anything that happens to cross your mind," she encouraged. "I am eager for new perspectives on these simulations."

The air boiled as Penelope's magma stretched towards Nomi like groping fingers, dripping red with bloody fire. Kallistatus and Mîr circled their Avatar, white streaks of HIDDEN POWER extending outwards towards the source of the HYPER BEAM. An explosion of crackling energy - the smell of ozone tickling Nomi's nostrils - but no impact came: the Unown had prevented any further devastation from reaching her.[break][break]
But they could not stop the STONE EDGE. Trapped though she was, Nomi held her ground, a detached calm grounding her even as the Councilwoman closed in.[break][break]
"My side has protected this region, same as yours," she explained. "We captured Nisa Holo of the DRK Triad during the Meteno incident and interrogated her, attempted to stop her from doing further harm."[break][break]
Shards of glittering blue crystal manifested out of thin air, forming together into a shield, the only barrier standing between Nomi and Penelope's fiery wrath.[break][break]
"And you are not so different from the likes of Elisabeth Fiorelli," she added, voice growing soft with pointed scrutiny. "You have allied yourself with ruination, have you not?"[break][break]
She waved a hand at the scorched earth, as if to emphasize her point. All around her, Unown began to pop into existence, coming to her aid through their collective bond.[break][break]
"The Unown wish to save this world. What does Chi-Yu want? Do you even know?"

Nomi giggled, returning Aurelie's high five. It felt like something Isaac Merlo would do, which warmed her heart - which then, of course, caused a small pang of melancholic longing to surge through her. She couldn't really see Isaac much anymore, given he was now in League custody as a freshly minted Rocket defector.[break][break]
Not wanting to dwell on matters outside of her control, Nomi bowed slightly to the violet paradox in thanks - a sign of respect. She had never quite shaken that particular Johtonian custom. "Yes, thank you - you were brilliant - "[break][break]
Nomi stared down at Aurelie's offered hand. She smiled, happy enough to hop onto the Pokemon's back for a ride. She'd enjoyed the Cyclizar "car chase" more than she would have expected, she realized. She let Aurelie help her onto the paradox, then wrapped her arms around the other woman's waist to steady herself once they were both settled - blushing again as she realized how close they were this way.[break][break]
Unfortunately - or perhaps luckily? - the simulation began to fade as soon as they sped off through the cavern. Nomi got one final glimpse of some unfamiliar crystallized flora before everything pixilated away, depositing them back into the Rocket lab. Realizing she was still holding onto Aurelie, she quickly let go, blush deepening.[break][break]
"Thank you for accompanying me, Aurelie!" She blurted out, before scampering off to busy herself with one of her in-progress experiments.

Suicune's appearance sealed their fate, the final puzzle piece to Nomi's plan. It had cost Isaac Merlo to oppose Elisabeth Fiorelli so defiantly, however - for his name was now etched into the tablets of ruin, a beacon of resentment so bright Nomi could see it across the battlefield like a terrible, ominous star.[break][break]
They are coming.[break][break]
It was the same warning, a split-second of foreshadowing, and her eyes flashed white as she looked ahead - to where her various hidden sentries were watching the many entrances in and out of the cave system. Above, Kallistatus prepared a beam of HIDDEN POWER. And then, through wind and water, decaying petals and shards of crystal, the triad appeared.[break][break]
Six agents had been sent this time - black clad and masked - the symbol of their order sewn onto their chests. Nomi steadied herself against a boulder, summoning a layer of blue crystals around herself - a weaker mimicry of Zev Harcourt's black armor - but enough to protect her long enough for Kallistatus to transform.[break][break]
The shiny Unown-K released its attack, then retreated to Nomi's side, where it began to resonate with the Tera shards embedded in the walls of the cave. Nebulas of silver light glittered across its symbolic body as it terstallized.[break][break]
"The DRK Triad is here!" She announced to all present, loud enough for her voice to carry. "They've come to kill us all! League or Rocket, it makes no difference."[break][break]

She opened her mouth to reply, then paused, thinking back to that fateful day in the RKS Machine when Holo had attacked her. Kallistatus had listened to Nomi not because she'd offered it more power, or more influence over humanity; it had been drawn to her because she loved it - loved all of the Unown. It didn't matter to her that Kallistatus had worked for her enemy - she'd recognized that it had likely done so out of a desperate longing for companionship.[break][break]
"The Unown have been lonely for a very long time," she told Theo, voice twinged with sadness. "They are the oldest living creatures, save for Arceus itself."[break][break]
A bulky canine creature emerged from the shadows, jaws snapping. It looked like a twisted version of an Entei, she realized. Another paradox?[break][break]
"They were likely originally drawn to the Triad because of that loneliness. But Holo and her people exploit them - treat them like tools. I offered them an alternative. Love instead of servitude."[break][break]
Kallistatus began to gather energy, then blasted a HIDDEN POWER at the not-Entei.[break][break]

Cillian barked out a laugh, and Nomi couldn't help but smile. He was right, of course: no legendary Pokemon could be controlled. Lugia might be allied with Cillian - with Rocket - but she could change her mind at a moment's notice, should she feel inclined to seek some new partnership, goal, or outcome. She was the essence of storm and sea, sky and shadow - she would not be held back by humanity's childish whims.[break][break]
But what do the Gods really want? Nomi wondered, thinking of Elisabeth Fiorelli and her ruinous snail. All of them sought some measure of influence over this universe, she knew - but they were a group of complex beings with interpersonal affinities and oppositions that Nomi was only just beginning to grasp.[break][break]
"Well, when the time comes, I hope she'll give them hell," Nomi chuckled, inclining her head in respect - a Johtonian custom she had never managed to shake. Lugia was not physically present within the cave, but Nomi knew she could sense them all the same.[break][break]
She regarded the massive crystal before them once more, a pillar of untapped potential - of concentrated majesty.[break][break]
"I'm going to take a sample from this one," she decided, crouching down to open her pack. "Watch my back."[break][break]
She knew he would.[break][break]

Project Infinity might be enough to tempt Father Winter, for the DRK Triad feared Avatars - their unpredictability was enough to cause the shadowy agents to attack the God-blessed, as well as make every attempt to stop new bonds from forming. Any information on their nature would be of use to them, though Nomi was loath to give any of it up unless they absolutely had to. Which was why she stubbornly held onto the notion that Mint himself would be able to attract Father Winter simply by continuing to be the charming, intriguing, determined man that he was - Galarian Articuno or no Galarian Articuno.[break][break]
As for how to find him...[break][break]
"I have an idea," she told Mint, flashing the Beast a small, mischievous smile. Tapping into the collective network of the Unown, she reached out with her senses for a very specific one. A pregnant pause, and then - [break][break]
An Unown-D popped into existence, staring down at Mint with its singular eye.[break][break]
"This Unown once belonged to Father Winter. Rocket acquired it during the Meteno incident." She smiled, triumphant. "It's loyal to me now, but I suspect it still knows how to find Father Winter. Maybe if you spend some time bonding with it, it will be able to contact him for you?"[break][break]
The Unown-D floated down to Mint, circling around him curiously.[break][break]
"I've been calling it Diomedes."[break][break]

She considered him, every tragic angle of his history, how loyalty was the only language he was willing to speak. Such a subjective thing: for was it not in Rocket's best interest to survive?[break][break]
But, Cillian trusted her, and he truly believed she had a chance of swaying Walsh - one way or another. If anyone can convince him, it would be you. She could not afford to doubt herself, not even for a second. If she allowed her conviction to waver, she would risk getting trampled by the festering grudges that already had so many of her peers - and their League counterparts - in a tight chokehold.[break][break]
They were frozen in place, and she needed all of them to move. Otherwise, they were sitting Duckletts.[break][break]
"Then I will go to him," she promised, leaving out the fact that if she was able to secure a meeting with the League Commissioner prior to an appointment with Walsh, she would still take it. There simply wasn't enough time to pick and choose. Delays could cost them another of their cities, another potential Avatar legendary, or worse...[break][break]
"And now," she added softly, eyes following the Rotom's erratic movement pattern. "I will stop talking to you about my plans. So that nobody can force you to betray me."[break][break]
I won't do that to you, she vowed.[break][break]
"Just promise me this, Cillian." She faced him again, expression resolute. "When the real war begins, we're going to need you - and Lugia. The DRK Triad fears the Avatars for a reason. They cannot accurately predict how we will affect our own fate. That means it's not hopeless."[break][break]
She smiled, bearing teeth.[break][break]
"We can defeat them."

Be careful, Cillian Quinn had cautioned. He trusted her, and he knew she was right, but he feared Walsh. It was unfortunate, but understandable, given his history. He would do all he could for her, and nothing more.[break][break]
Elisabeth Fiorelli was selfish, and easily distracted by her own resentment, but even if she were confronted, Nomi doubted she would waste her breath on purposefully interfering with the Visionary's mission. She might even reluctantly agree to its merit, given that she had already damned the League to deal with the violent heart of their own MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]
But what of THEO BECKETT? Where would he fall? Would he consider what was truly at stake?[break][break]
"Rocket and League have a common enemy. The DRK Triad wishes to destroy our world and everyone in it. My Unown understand the gravity of such a fate, and have betrayed their former masters in order to gift me Avatarship. They believe I can help save Hoenn. That Rocket can help save Hoenn."[break][break]
A shape began to emerge from the cave, all claws, teeth, and golden horns. Kallistatus drifted forward, ready to meet the monster within.[break][break]

She glanced around the chamber, as if that very something might suddenly manifest. Only Tera crystals glittered back at her, winking as if in silent mockery. She huffed, determination coloring her expression. All of a sudden, it felt pointless to just sit there, collecting samples, crawling towards answers. Too slow, all of it was far too slow. The region was running out of time.[break][break]
"Let's go find it! Or whatever's making that sound. If we can't handle it, I'll just take us to the Unown Dimension. We'll be safe there."[break][break]
She stood, trying to decide which direction made the most sense. Choosing randomly, she began to walk off, listening carefully for more signs of life deeper within the cave system.[break][break]

Cool air tickled her cheeks as she opened her eyes. Nomi blinked, momentarily blinded by bright sunlight; when her vision cleared, she stood, and found that she was...somewhere else.[break][break]
A dream?[break][break]
The first thing she noticed was how beautiful it was: reds and golds scattered amidst a harvest's bounty, the heralds of Autumn, hinting at the majesty that would unfurl before the earth became barren with Winter's chill. Leaves crunched beneath her shoes, and she breathed in deep, tasting the promise of cinnamon and pumpkin spice. It was all so real - and for a moment, she was reminded of the RKS Machine, and its eerily believable simulations.[break][break]
But this didn't feel quite like that...no, it was different somehow. Nomi couldn't quite place it, but she could feel it in her bones. Familiar, she thought. It's more familiar somehow.[break][break]
And, she realized, her Unown had not come with her.[break][break]
The second thing she noticed was Lulu Flint, standing right next to her, ecstatic.[break][break]
Had Nomi ever seen Lulu smile like that? She seemed so pleased, so...proud. Nomi couldn't help but smile back - she knew how hard Lulu had been working on this, how much this moment must mean to her.[break][break]
But then the other woman's excitement sobered, and Nomi followed her gaze to the girl. Nomi didn't recognize her, but the sight of her chilled the Head Scientist in a way that had nothing to do with the crisp breeze. She trailed after Lulu, trying to make sense of the whimsical words coming out of the girl's mouth.[break][break]
Look not into the Pokémon's eyes...[break][break]
"Which Pokemon?" She murmured, curiosity mixed with a sudden apprehension.[break][break]
This was not the first time she had been warned about being perceived...[break][break]
