Nomi dropped her handshake attempt for a second time, startling as the girl kicked a nearby trashcan. She winced. That had to have hurt.[break][break]
She listened to the ranting - the defeated, childish temper tantrum - with a polite, neutral expression. She folded her hands behind her back, waiting patiently. As the pale-haired girl continued, Nomi realized that she needed this. It was a form of catharsis. Letting her finish mattered, so Nomi did not interrupt.[break][break]
Silence fell, punctuated only by their breathing. The Unown stared blankly at the women, their singular eyes stark white beacons in the low light of the alley.[break][break]
"Are you done?" Nomi asked pleasantly.[break][break]
It was a rhetorical question, the answer obvious. She cleared her throat and continued.[break][break]
"You have a choice," she explained, tone carrying neither harsh reprimand nor patronizing softness: merely a matter-of-fact candor. "You can either walk away from this place, pretend you never met me, and continue on with your current life or you can accept that there is something catastrophic happening to this region you live in, and resolve to do something about it."[break][break]
She unclasped her hands, held them out before her, palms up. It was the gesture of a prophetess - but instead of closed-off and cryptic, Nomi oriented herself towards appearing open and inviting.[break][break]
"So which will it be?"

Nomi rolled her eyes at Parker's comment about the "herbs", but enjoyed the way Becky's reddened cheeks puffed slightly with annoyance as she was asked to babysit. Maisey's tongue lolled, slobber dripping onto the realtor's heels. Nomi giggled as she rounded the corner, leaving them behind in the kitchen.[break][break]
She dashed up the stairs, feeling suddenly giddy. It was like the air was charged with a peculiar voltage, something that made her whole body buzz with excitement.[break][break]
This is real. This is really happening.[break][break]
She didn't need strong arms to grab her to fall easily into Parker's embrace. Her own hands tangled themselves effortlessly in her girlfriend's short-cropped red hair. She was kissing her instead of looking at the bathtub (claw-footed and definitely big enough for two, she'd notice later), and because she was drunk on dreams-coming-true, a coyness came over her tone of voice, and she had half a mind to start begging for Parker to take her right there on the tile floor.[break][break]
"I want to live here with you," she declared instead, though the sultry wanting was still unmistakably evident. They hadn't even seen it all, technically, but she felt fairly certain that this was the one.

Kallistatus flipped around in mid-air when Andrea addressed it, zipping down to circle Nomi like it was a miniature moon orbiting a planet. Nomi chuckled, recognizing the reaction as a sign of affirmation. It was confirming its loyalty to Nomi as something more than just duty: it was real affection.[break][break]
"I can tell that your Pokemon love you, too," Nomi commented, eyeing Junior and his family still grazing nearby. "The enemies of this world tend to scoff at our attempts to befriend Pokemon, but that makes them the fools."[break][break]
Nomi's expression sobered once more, feeling suddenly tired.[break][break]
"I don't want you or your Pokemon to get hurt, Andrea, but everyone has a part to play in the war to come. The Triad fears Avatars, and while it is true that we have the most firepower at our fingertips, anyone can make a difference in the fight to preserve our world."[break][break]
The Unown were excellent spies, but there simply weren't enough of them to keep watch over every corner of the region. And, in terms of battle, skilled trainers would always be needed.[break][break]
"Can I count on you to alert me if you ever come across a member of the DRK Triad, or think you've found evidence of their meddling? And if you run into one of my Rocket peers...try not to fight them. I'm not asking you to forgo defending yourself, if you're being attacked, but...we need to do our best to de-escalate the faction conflict."[break][break]
The more people committed to the cause, the better. On both sides.

The defiant were punished swiftly and harshly. Nomi watched one man in particular get beaten within an inch of his life - but only when he cried out in anguish as they crushed one of his Pokeballs, did she recognize him.[break][break]
Hadn't Shred Zeppelin suffered enough? The loss of a limb seemed to pale in comparison to the loss of a treasured companion. Nomi shivered, trying not to imagine it being Valerian...or Kallistatus...to lose them like that...[break][break]
"Such needless cruelty," she murmured, forcing a neutral tone. She would rely on the scientific part of her brain - the part that observed the world with a cold, detached scrutiny - to stave off despair, as was her way.[break][break]
She inched closer to Greyson Connors as the Megalopolians relayed their next set of sharp-toothed instructions.[break][break]
The prisoner's dilemma. Of course.[break][break]
"Forsake is the most logical choice," she quickly concluded, whispering softly for only Greyson to hear. "We cannot know for certain if there are truly other wards - or if this is merely another psychological torture tactic - but assuming this dummy ward is full of other prisoners, then we should choose the option that gives us the highest chance of receiving zero punishment."[break][break]
It would be a false reward, she knew. She was starting to understand this place - their captors, specifically - and one thing had begun to reveal itself, as clearly as the glittering Tera Crystals winking down at them from the ceiling: this was a game. An awful one, but there were win conditions all the same.[break][break]
They might not earn a respite, but they could perhaps gain something more valuable in the long run: respect.[break][break]
"It is a coin flip, Greyson. And whether we like it or not, this place rewards the ruthless."[break][break]
And if Parker is in that other ward?[break][break]
Well, then Parker would have to do what she did best: fight. And if there was one thing Nomi would always trust, it was Parker's resilience. Her willingness to be ruthless. She was the strong one.

The girl covered her eyes, and Nomi shivered.[break][break]
Mythology sprang from her lips, like seeds sprouting into twisting vines, the words wrapping around Nomi's consciousness and eliciting images of a pristine lake. She recalled the inert, submerged form of Azel she had witness within the RKS Machine. Was this also a type of simulation? And was the girl a part of it, as insubstantial as the rest, or had she somehow travelled here, too?[break][break]
Nomi almost reached out to touch her, in order to find out if she was real. Flesh and blood would be warm to the touch, but - [break][break]
Unown popped into existence all around them, and Nomi gasped, attention immediately diverted from the girl to the symbol Pokemon.[break][break]
Kallistatus was not among them. In fact, she did not recognize any of these Unown. Stranger still, when she extended her consciousness towards them - intending to connect to the greater Collective - she felt...a wall of resistance. As if there was nothing there at all.[break][break]
Similar to...to the Ruins of Alph scenario within the RKS, she realized.[break][break]
"They don't belong to anyone," she told Lulu, fascinated. "This is a dream. They are the memories of Unown, perhaps. But they aren't real."[break][break]
She looked at the young girl once more. All of a sudden, something clicked into place, like the last piece of an elaborate puzzle.[break][break]
"This is your dream, isn't it."

She gazed down at his offered hand. It was a relatively empty gesture, considering he had already agreed to help her, but she supposed the ritual of it couldn't hurt.[break][break]
So she took it, and for a moment, they stood there, an infinite expanse of galaxies staring down at them: two unlikely allies.[break][break]
"I am a woman of science," she told him, voice soft, a measure of vulnerability revealed as a token of trust. "I rely on logic and facts to dictate my choices. But you are right: without belief - without conviction - we will fail."[break][break]
As she held onto him, she called upon the power of her Unown. In an instant, they were standing back on solid ground, heralded by the sound of waves crashing against the shore. The incoming sea breeze blew back her pink hair, and she breathed in deep, allowing the salt to tickle her nostrils.[break][break]
"So we need to believe that it is possible to save our world." She glanced at Kallistatus. "The Unown have already taught me a thing or two about defying the improbable."[break][break]
She smiled, though it was twinged with a lonely grief - for it was never an easy thing, to carry such weight: the fate of existence was far too much for one person to bear.[break][break]
So, she would share it. One ally at a time.[break][break]
"Your Unown will know how to find me," she said, sensing their meeting was coming to an end. They could not linger here, just as they could not linger in the Unown Dimension: lest they become perceived.[break][break]
"I will conduct some tests within the Rocket RKS Machine, to ensure all of my powers work inside of it. Then perhaps you can take me inside of yours, via your Unown."[break][break]
She paused, before turning to face the ocean, preparing to teleport back to the Rocket submarine.[break][break]
"Try not to die, Michael Navidson."

The girl's fear gave Nomi pause, and she lowered her hand. Had she really come on that strong?[break][break]
It was then that Nomi took the time to really look at who she was dealing with: a young woman around her own age, civilian clothing, and utterly terrified. And yet, defiance radiated from her: she was being entirely genuine about her hatred of Father Winter.[break][break]
She may have insulted Nomi, but she could see now that it had been a misunderstanding. This girl was an ally, not an enemy.[break][break]
She was merely ignorant, and now it was up to Nomi to educate her.[break][break]
So what do I have to do with any of this?[break][break]
"Everyone has a part to play," Nomi explained softly, voice lowered, demeanor calm. "If you want to hurt the DRK Triad, I can help you do so."[break][break]
Trust was built upon truth.[break][break]
"The Unown call me The Visionary," she continued. "I am their Avatar, yes."[break][break]
She held out her hand once more, but this time, it was accompanied by a smile.[break][break]
"Let's start over."

Parker took up the offensive, moving before Nomi had a chance to hold her back. Like a knight in shining (brass) armor, she cut an imposing figure as she stalked through the parted flames, her anger as sharp as any sword. Amulius's presence made Nomi's heart soar, his speed outmatching the Charizard: he could be relied upon to watch Parker's back, and she always fought best by his side.[break][break]
It should have been enough.[break][break]
A gunshot rang out, heralding doom. Nomi gasped, feeling sluggish, trying desperately to see through the smoke and ash. Had Parker been hit? A part of her brain felt like it was short-circuiting as she tried to make sense of why - [break][break]
- ("Sorry, do I know you?") -[break][break]
- Gunner Graves would have a gun - [break][break]
- ("I'm a paralegal.") - [break][break]
- on his person, but more than that - why would he hurt them? Why would he hurt them when he had been at their - [break][break]
"Parker!"[break][break]
Light burst forth from the Charizard, shining a beacon on everything within the perimeter of their makeshift campsite. Nomi's throat seized up, suddenly so parched she could hardly breath, and she clutched at her neck with feeble hands. A pool of magma bubbled up from the ground beneath her, threatening to consume the Visionary, and she thought for a half-heartbeat that this would be where she died.[break][break]
And then the magma was blasted away: all three pools splashing backwards, away from Nomi. Remus growled low in the back of his throat, the COUNTER timed perfectly to dismiss Penelope's vengeful attack. Nomi looked to him, feeling numb, and it was then that she noticed his paw on her leg. A warmth that was far more soothing than the violent heat conjured by the Councilwoman's rage coursed through her, the HEAL PULSE causing her mind to clear and her aching body to stabilize.[break][break]
And that was enough.[break][break]
She leapt to her feet, and extended her consciousness outwards in all directions, as far as she could reach. Kallistatus beamed her intention to the Collective, calling them back to their Avatar, and in an instant, eyes began to pop into existence all around Nomi. All of the Unown she had sent out into the world to spy for Rocket, for her, had returned.

It was at that moment - as Maisey gobbled up Avery's affection like so many gourmet Poke-treats - that Nomi felt suddenly displaced. It was like she'd wandered into the restricted section of the university library without meaning to, surrounded by a history she hadn't been given explicit permission to read. Here was the biting back-and-forth of sibling jest, the intimacy of sisterhood, the sort of laughter that was entirely bespoke - customized to fit inside jokes only, so Arceus be with you if you happened to be on the outside.[break][break]
It wasn't Avery who was the third wheel, it was Nomi.[break][break]
An odd sensation was making her sweat - like it was summer not winter - and it was only after Avery had deemed Kallistatus "cute" that Nomi realized that the feeling she was experiencing was jealousy.[break][break]
Jealousy because Maisey liked Avery better than her. Jealousy because Avery obviously knew things about Parker that Nomi didn't. Jealousy because she'd never had a little sister. Or a big sister. Or anybody, really.[break][break]
"I - " She cleared her throat, trying to find the smile that Avery absolutely deserved. "I did! It was very okay. I mean - delicious! Like, deliciously okay. Erm."[break][break]
If this continued, she might actually perish. Which would probably be nice, all things considered.

Nomi wanted to ask, in that moment, who had taken Elisabeth Fiorelli for granted - who had so profoundly rejected her - that she had come to believe such a sentiment. Is that really what will happen? Not just with the Unown, but with parker jones too? Was all that she loved destined to disappoint her, in the end?[break][break]
It was jarring to feel such ugly tragedy in the Underboss's words, in contrast to the tenderness by which she touched Nomi - like a mother to a daughter, almost. It was so unlike her, that Nomi wondered for a moment if she had conjured this version of Elisabeth via dream mist somehow, and that the real one had left her laboratory several minutes ago. But there had been no dream mist here, no Tera Energy, nothing to suggest this wasn't the actual Elisabeth.[break][break]
This is the real her, Nomi realized with a start, and for the first time, she felt the truth brush her skin with its own gentle caress: that nothing twisted had ever started out that way. Some rocks became gems when polished, others were always beautiful until cracked.[break][break]
"It's good advice," she murmured sincerely, wondering as to the nature of Elisabeth's own family - were they the ones that had taught her so harsh a lesson about trust? "I appreciate you looking out for me."[break][break]
She certainly did not have to, and they both knew it. Nomi decided, in that moment, that this might be the closest thing to real friendliness she would ever receive from Elisabeth.[break][break]
"I'll wrap up here, and send out a report to the rest of Rocket's leadership by day's end."[break][break]
She paused, running her thumb over one of the vials of blood. It was still warm.[break][break]
"Thank you, Elisabeth."

"I'll take us back to the sub," she explained. "To my lab."[break][break]
There, she would begin to write up a report on their encounter with Kyogre. Hopefully parker jones would be there, napping on the couch. It occurred to her, then, that Shred and Parker would probably get along. Nomi had a feeling Parker would find him amusing.[break][break]

They waited. And waited. Nomi's arm began to ache from holding the book aloft. And still, they waited.[break][break]
"Nothing," she sighed, finally releasing her hold on it, arm dropping to her side. "A shame, indeed."[break][break]
She stared into the pit of vibrant energy, contemplating its nature. Amor began to list off other experiments - Tera Energy, for example - but it wasn't until he mentioned howard slayte that Nomi perked up, glancing his way once more.[break][break]
"Howard? Yes, he's brilliant," she agreed. "I've been meaning to talk to him about the book. Thank you for the reminder."[break][break]
She'd also been meaning to talk to BARNABY FINCH, too. The Admin had attracted the attention of one of the Galarian birds that had emerged from the book, which had struck Nomi as rather significant.[break][break]
"Shall I take us back?" She asked. "This was not a wasteful experiment, but there's little point in staying."
