"Come by sometime. Any time, really," he told Cain before taking a long drag from his own cigarette. The smoke joined the haze that hung low in the room. "We fight for free on weeknights, just to let loose some steam an' get better."[break][break]

A bookie walked the crowds, paying winners and collecting new debts. He stopped when he saw Cain and asked if the man wanted to put down any money on the next contenders.[break][break]

Regardless of Cain's response, Marshall eventually waved the bookie off.[break][break]

"You can meet some of the regulars, and we can get a round or two in, you and me." He grinned. "I'm curious to see if you're still as good as you were, back when we were just punk kids."

So there was no special agenda; they just had to help out wherever. Marshall didn't like it, but he was always the man with the plan. Contrary to appearances, he was definitely the type of person who researched everything thoroughly and weighed all his options before choosing a course of action.[break][break]

"Cool your engine there, Jazz," Marshall said, unfazed by her frustration. It was not her fault she was not like him in that regard. "We're here, so we'll help. Just figured you might have more of a plan or somethin'."[break][break]

He pulled out his phone and searched for the name of the campsite. The website popped up as the top result. After a moment, he found a page that did indeed request for volunteers. In particular, the kids' camp was looking for individuals with Water-type Pokémon who could watch over, protect, and help any children swimming far from the edge of Pacifidlog.[break][break]

"Look, here we go," Marshall said, showing the web page to his companions. "You two got Water-types? This seems like an easy enough job."[break][break]

At the campsite, Marshall spoke with the counselor in charge, introducing himself, Jasmine, and Raphael as volunteers. They were immediately stationed at the edge of the longest pier, where children were already playing water games. Marshall rode on the back of his Carracosta as she began her back-and-forth patrol.

"Yeah, I get what you're sayin'," Marshall said, connecting the dots together. So King was scoping out other fight club locations, possibly as a way to size up the competition, possibly for networking potential.[break][break]

"Better get used to hearin' about us, buddy. We may be new in town but we brought all our shit with us from Unova. But nah, I'm not the boss. That's Jack Magnus. But I do run this joint here, including what happens when the doors are closed an' locked."[break][break]

Marshall stuffed his hands in his pockets, as nonchalant as one could be.[break][break]

"If ya wanna talk gang shit with Magnus, I can set up a meetin' with him. But if ya wanna talk with your fists, maybe you come by after eight tonight and I introduce you to some folks."[break][break]

Fight club was free on weekdays, serving as a place for fighters to train and let off some steam from their day jobs. Tournament days, with betting, didn't happen until Saturdays. And those were all-day events.

With Magnus' two Houndour and Keira's Charizard lighting the way, it was easy to see how complex the underground tunnels truly were. Marshall followed his companions closely, unwilling to be separated from them. After all, what if he got lost? What if he reached a dead end and couldn't find his way back to the start? He was not about to die down there.[break][break]

"Whatever you say goes, boss," Marshall reassured Magnus, who led the way.[break][break]

Marshall glanced sidelong at Keira as she fell into step beside him. Wordlessly, he reached out and squeezed her hand, intending to comfort her as they walked deeper into the darkness. I'm here, the gesture communicated.[break][break]

Then he let her go.[break][break]

After a few more minutes, a telltale breeze reached Marshall. "Oi, there's somethin' up ahead!" he said. Sure enough, the ground began sloping upward, and natural sunlight lightened the tunnel's interior.[break][break]

Before long, they emerged from the underground passages to discover a sheltered structure. Palm trees stretched toward the sun, lining the banks of a large pond.[break][break]

Marshall's eyes widened in awe. They'd found an oasis.[break][break]

Marshall leaned in to light his cigarette on Cain's lighter. An inhale brought the smoke into his lungs and the nicotine into his veins. He exhaled just as leisurely.[break][break]

"You've come on a good night, then. Every Saturday we got somethin' like this goin' with real money. Watch and see what you think."[break][break]

One of the fighters in the ring threw a left hook. The crowd's shouts reached a fever pitch, yells of encouragement laced with obscenities and dares. Marshall leaned on the railing to watch, his cigarette dangling casually from his fingers.[break][break]

The first fights of the night were always between less skilled fighters. After ten minutes, one man lay flat on his back, signaling a surrender, while the other sat on his chest, fist frozen in the air. Their handlers peeled them off each other while the referee shouted the tally.[break][break]

Marshall glanced at Cain. "You still fightin' yourself, or you doin' more setup now?"[break][break]

It would be a few minutes before the next match, giving them time to chat more.

Marshall fought the urge to roll his eyes. Jasmine earned her keep chatting away with rich, lonely fucks, and Raphael was a solid wall of mean muscle. Their day-to-day activities were simple, so he should have expected such answers from them.[break][break]

"I get that we're helpin' the kids. You know I'm not an idiot," Marshall said. "But what's on the agenda? You must've read somethin' on the Internet to hear about this job in the first place, Jazz. So? What kinda shit were they advertisin'?"[break][break]

Ahead, a gaggle of preteens laughed and screamed as they rushed to and fro on the docks. Marshall's expression softened slightly upon seeing them. He, too, liked kids, and sometimes thought he could have some of his own one day.[break][break]

At least the children here weren't to blame for his foul mood.

Technically, Marshall was not a mechanic at MAUVILLE MODS & REPAIR. He wasn't even a manager; Orthrus paid someone else to run the day-to-day operations of the garage. No, Marshall's role was overseer. He was the man who dropped by every month to make sure things were running smoothly and business was booming.[break][break]

As it happened, though, he frequented the body shop more often than that. He enjoyed the company of the workers there and the chill atmosphere they fostered. Most of all, though, he liked tinkering with his own motorcycle with all their tools and expertise at his disposal.[break][break]

Marshall was there, his bike raised on a platform, when the stranger rode in with an ominous knocking sound coming from the engine. The noise drew everyone's gaze to the machine.[break][break]

"Hey buddy, what ya got there?" Marshall asked, wiping the oil from his hands on a used rag. His blue eyes scanned the stranger's motorcycle first, then raised to assess the rider himself.

Not one to be left behind, Marshall put his fingers to his lips to whistle for Bogie. The Noivern swooped down low, slowing down enough so her trainer could grab her clawed feet. She wasn't large enough for him to ride on, so she merely lowered him through the hole and dropped him from a safe distance onto the sandstone.[break][break]

"Don't scare us like that again, ya hear?" Marshall scolded Magnus, though his tone was lighthearted and his grin was wide on his face.[break][break]

After recalling Bogie into her Pokéball, he peered down the unnatural tunnel. Though the light from above was enough to reveal their immediate surroundings, farther down, there was only darkness.[break][break]

"Either of you got a light?" he asked, unslinging his backpack from one shoulder to check its pockets for a flashlight. "I don't have any Pokémon that can glow or anythin'."

Marshall was not an "out in nature" kind of guy. He liked cities, roads, machinery — the kind of stuff he could take apart and put back together with his hands. Nature was wild and unpredictable, and he burned easily in the sun.[break][break]

Unfortunately, boss' orders meant he had to put up with a whole day outside. At least the ocean was better than a humid forest teeming with blood-hungry insects, he admitted to himself as he stood with Jasmine Blair and raphael dos plumas on the docks of Pacifidlog Town.[break][break]

At least his Carracosta was enjoying the chance to swim. Cruiser floated nearby, her head, nose, and the top of her shell peeking out from the surface of the water.[break][break]

"I'll be excited once you tell us what's goin' on," Marshall said to Jasmine, who looked fit to burst with joy. "What're we even doin' here, Jazz?"

Marshall's reunion with Keira Torres had gone swimmingly — better, in fact, than he had anticipated. The events of that night surfaced to the fore of his mind when he saw her outside the restaurant Jack Magnus had picked for their meeting.[break][break]

Grinning, Marshall approached Keira with all the swagger of a man who knew how she tasted between her legs.[break][break]

"Hey, gorgeous," he said, his eyes roaming over her body. Maybe, if she agreed to join Orthrus after all, they could repeat their romp on another night soon. But he reined in his lust and met her eyes at last. "You ready to meet the big man in charge?"[break][break]

Of course she was. She was Keira fucking Torres.[break][break]

Marshall led her into the restaurant. Magnus was not difficult to locate; even seated, his massive frame made him stand out among the other patrons. And was that a Pokémon in his lap?[break][break]

"Yo, Magnus," Marshall called out as he and Keira approached the table. "This is Crimson, the lady I told you about." He then took his seat, letting her introduce herself further, however she wished to do it.

Marshall was already leaping into action when Keira called for his name. He unwound out the length of climbing rope he'd stowed into his backpack. His hands moved in a blur, tying a loop in one end of the rope before tossing it to Magnus. Marshall knew the knots would not come undone.[break][break]

"Put that around your waist! Hurry!" he shouted at his boss. "And pull tight so the loop fits snugly around you!"[break][break]

He firmly grasped the rest of the rope and called to Keira. "Give me a hand!" he ordered. Then he dug his heels into the sand and pulled as hard as he could. Carefully, he took a step backward, trying to draw Magnus out of the trap.[break][break]

Another step. They could do this. They had to.

"We came lookin' for new hunting grounds," Marshall replied, half-turning toward the fighting pit. The first two fighters were facing off, shirtless and shoeless. They raised their bare fists in defense as they circled each other, watching for an opening.[break][break]

"Castelia was a good place, but it got overrun pretty quick with minor gangs tryin' to make a name for themselves. Jack Magnus figured we could do better here in Hoenn, so we've been here for a couple of years, gettin' ourselves established."[break][break]

Smoke from nearby cigarettes itched Marshall's nose, triggering a yearning for nicotine. He fished a pack from his pocket and pulled one out for himself. Then, with a sideways glance at Cain, he offered one to the other man.[break][break]

"What about you? What've you been up to?" Marshall asked.

Marshall tilted his head toward Keira, acknowledging her point. "Yeah, but ever since you were a little shitty kid, you were outsmartin' us all. Even the adults. Maybe it took me a few years an' some change to admit that, but you were."[break][break]

The air between them was charged with a new tension. He watched Keira's eyes light up with a spark of interest that mirrored his own. And her unexpected compliment softened the smile on his lips.[break][break]

"Of course. I ain't about to sign you up without you meetin' the guy first. Now that I know you're interested, I can set up a meeting. Here's my number."[break][break]

Momentarily taking a hand off his beer bottle, he grabbed a pen from behind the bar and scrawled his digits on a napkin. He slid it over to Keira for her to take.[break][break]

"Now… what d'ya say to a round or two of pool, hmm?" he challenged, jerking his head toward one of the tables, now empty and waiting for players.

The fight club in the basement of MAUVILLE MODS & REPAIR met every weeknight and required no cash for entry. People who knew about the club came with their own beer, fought, drank, patched themselves up, then went home.[break][break]

Saturdays were another matter. Saturdays were cash days. Abner Armstrong organized brackets and collected bets. Of course, weekly matches were still casual; anyone could sign up, and anyone could win. Well, ozias ambrose won most of the time, but that was the allure. People came time and time again to try their best against Orthrus' champion.[break][break]

Marshall, however, did not fight on Saturdays. It was enough for Oz to clean up all the contenders. Instead, he oversaw the scene, making sure everyone was respectful and obeyed Orthrus' rules. Fights happened in the ring, not outside it.[break][break]

He heard the newcomer's voice loud and clear, calling for his name. Marshall looked over to see what the fuss was about, only to recognize none other than Cain Toman. The man was an old face from a different life.[break][break]

A grin spread over Marshall's face as he made his way over to Cain in the crowd.[break][break]

"Well, fuck me sideways. What's up, man," he said in greeting, reaching out to grasp Cain's hand in the way gang members do. "Whatcha doin' out here in Hoenn?"
