When the Steelix went down, Jett told the Rocket grunts to run away and get their Pokémon healed. Julia grinned, proud of their victory and glad to have someone like Jett on her side. He was proving more and more that he wasn't just some mean tough guy, despite his looks. Julia thought that was cooler than if he had lived up to his appearance.

[break][break]"Hey, you can't just—!" the other grunt called after her partner. "Grr! We'll be back! Wait up, you coward!" After shooting that not-so-threatening threat at Jett and Julia, she ran after the other Rocket.

[break][break]Julia turned her grin to Jett. "Yeah! That was awesome!" Well, minus Lazuli fainting, of course. Julia would have to Revive the poor girl once they were back to safety. Still, they'd taken down two Mega Pokémon and chased those grunts off, and that was enough for Julia to celebrate.

[break][break]Jett was right: Those two probably wouldn't be the only ones. "If they all make entrances like that, they shouldn't be too hard to spot," she said with a playful smirk. Ah, humor, one of the best coping mechanisms known to man.

[break][break]Chester cawed quietly, one of his heads nudging the saddlebags that now sat on the cavern floor. "We'd better get this stuff back on track," Julia said. Oblivious to Jett's inner frustrations, she hoisted the saddlebags back into place and made sure their contents hadn't been disturbed in the scuffle. They needed a little readjusting, but other than that, the supplies had avoided the brunt of the battle.

"Nothing?" Julia echoed, bewilderment plastered all over her face and tone. "Then what's the point of collecting them?" The woman had said she was just an "opportunist," but you didn't do something like this without some kind of purpose, right?

[break][break]She did have a point, though: What she was doing wasn't technically illegal here. As long as she hadn't killed the Zubat—which Julia still wasn't totally sure on—there wasn't any rule or law that said you couldn't collect deceased Zubat. Would that sort of law even apply in this dimension? It wouldn't be the first time Julia had worked outside of her jurisdiction for what was right.

[break][break]The Electivire finished collecting the corpses, prompting him and his trainer to join the Swalot in facing Julia. Either Julia could let them leave, or things could get "dangerous." Julia hesitated for a moment. Chester, too, seemed to be debating with himself. Soon, she came to her answer:

[break][break]"I need you to promise me their 'parts' won't be used against the League. Otherwise, I'm sorry, but I can't just let you leave with them."

[break][break]In the end, this was still a warzone. This woman may not have exactly "been" with Team Rocket, but if she was willing to sell whatever services she had to them, then it was a risk that Julia didn't want to take.

Julia's eyes widened for a moment at El's story of how they ended up in the Ultra Deep Sea. It was a good thing Blackjack had been there! He really did have a knack for showing up in unexpected places...

[break][break]And for using his Rocket persona to test people.

[break][break]"That sounds like Blackjack, all right," she said with a bittersweet smile. It sounded like it went well with El, but Julia was reminded of the incident with Josh Devlin. Seeing that headline before learning the truth of that situation had been rough.

[break][break]She was going to have to have a talk with Isaac about being a good person, from the sound of it. Right after she thanked him for keeping El safe.

[break][break]"I think he's good, too," Julia said. "I think if he left Rocket, he could do great things for people. It's just... complicated, I guess."

The familiar sound of a pebble tumbling down the path behind her made Julia snap her head up with a gasp. This time, though, it was far louder than what had heralded Isaac's arrival, but it didn't have the same crumbling and cracking that had preceded... what now lay before Julia. There were footsteps, too, loud and shambling and accompanied by heavy, rasping breaths that seemed to make the walls pulsate in time with them. Why was this place so weird...?

[break][break]Julia looked around for the sources of these sounds, but there were no shadows to show her the way. There was nothing, nothing but those horrible sounds that were far louder than they should have been for something that Julia couldn't even see. Her heart rattled in her ribs. Fear brought her the fleeting strength she needed to rise to her feet. What did she do? Did she run? Hide? Call out to whoever or whatever was there?

[break][break]"Hey, Jules."

[break][break]Julia yelled out in surprise and spun to face the voice suddenly behind her, instinctively taking a couple of steps back.

[break][break]"... Isaac...?"

[break][break]He looked terrible, but who wouldn't after being crushed like that? Heck, he looked a lot less bloodied and broken than Julia had expected.

[break][break]When he spoke again, Julia realized there was something wrong with his voice. It reminded her of the gravelly tone he used in his Blackjack disguise. She would have just chalked it up to him going through a harrowing experience if not for his words.

[break][break]"Isaac...?" Julia asked again. "Wh... What are you talking about...?"

[break][break]She couldn't comprehend what was in front of her. She'd just watched Isaac get crushed, but now he was here, looking and talking strangely. She didn't understand why he had that look on his face or why he was drumming a cracked Poké Ball on his belt.

Wow, this lady didn't give a straight answer to anything, did she? Okay, to be fair, most people wouldn't just admit to being in Rocket in front of a Ranger. But she had also admitted that she worked with them, so it wasn't like she was trying to hide her involvement.

[break][break]Ugh, Julia was thinking too hard about this. These poor Zubat were probably going to be used for something bad, and she couldn't let that happen.

[break][break]Her eyes widened at Shizue's questions. Kill her? "What? No! I just—"

[break][break]A Swalot was sent onto the battlefield and told to release poison gas if Julia tried anything. Julia gritted her teeth when fighting in the midst of the injured was mentioned. She'd have to be careful and make sure any violence didn't end with the remaining Zubat in the crossfire. Wait, was she implying the poison gas would be the cause of harm? Zubat were Poison-types, weren't they? So they'd be immune! Was this some kind of bluff? Well, Julia wasn't going to fall for it.

[break][break]"What are you going to do with the Zubat, then?" Julia asked, hand moving away from her belt. Chester's right head turned its glare to the Swalot while the other two kept an eye on Shizue and her Electivire, but he didn't move yet.

Poor Spot was having a time of it, trying to keep track of a single, muffled aura in this sea of people. Julia squeezed the underside of his paw, avoiding the spike sticking out the back. "You're doing great, buddy," she said. "Just a little more." She thought she heard a determined growl in his throat, but it was hard to tell with all this activity.

[break][break]Finally, the crowd began to thin as they reached the outskirts of the outpost. Julia didn't see any sign of that suspicious Ranger, though. Shoot, had they gotten away?

[break][break]Spot barked and pointed a paw at a dark shape sprinting off. That must have been them!

[break][break]"Good job, Spot," Julia quickly said before returning him to his Ball and sending out her trusty Dodrio. "Chester, let's ride! After that shadow!"

[break][break]Chester wasn't quite sure what was going on, but it sounded urgent, so he wasted no time in kneeling down so Julia could mount up. As soon as she was in place, he stood up and began to sprint after the Zoroark, leaving deep footprints with every powerful step.

Chester's left head looked over and tilted curiously as El watched him. His stride didn't slow down one bit, thanks to the other two heads' being able to stay focused on the road ahead.

[break][break]Julia was kind of glad that she wasn't doing the running, because she might have paused mid-stride in surprise. In the back of her mind, she'd been expecting to hear that name come up out here. After all, it was a battle between the League and Team Rocket, and Isaac—Blackjack—had a knack for showing up in all kinds of unexpected places. This, though, was a different kind of unexpected.

[break][break]"You met Blackjack? And he mentioned me?" She chased off her surprise with a giggle. "Wait, duh, you're the one asking the questions."

[break][break]She'd have to be careful here. Keeping Blackjack's identity as Isaac Merlo a secret was of utmost importance, and her usual habit of speaking before thinking wouldn't help there.

[break][break]"Hmm... We've run into each other a few times," she said after maybe a bit too much thinking. "The first time, I was trying to bust what I thought was bomb smuggling, but it turned out he just wanted to get fireworks for someone. He could have just bought them at a shop instead of being all shady about it, buuuuuut that's not really the important part! The important part is that he wasn't gonna hurt anyone. He even made sure I was okay before he rode off."

[break][break]The memory brought a warm, nostalgic smile to Julia's lips and a dusting of pink to her cheeks. That had been one of the first signs that Isaac—Blackjack—was a good person in a bad situation. Huh, who had those fireworks been for, again? She couldn't quite remember.

[break][break]"And then he actually helped me stop some poachers from poisoning the water! Teeeechnically, it was on Rocket turf, but he could have chased me off and just let those guys do their thing. Instead, he helped me round them up and get them back into League territory so they could be arrested." This time, the memory made her frown. "I learned a lot about Rocket that day. How they take in people down on their luck and turn them into monsters for their own benefit. I... realized that Blackjack was one of them."

[break][break]Phew, that was close. Good thing the first syllable of Isaac's name was so easy to cover up!

[break][break]"Not a monster, I mean! Just a guy in a bad spot who felt like he had nowhere else to go.

[break][break]"Anyway, the third time we met, there was a riot in Mauville over the League's plan for Meteno." Man, that felt like a lifetime ago now. "He was sort of leading them, but he also tried to stop people from getting hurt. Including the officers on the other side."

[break][break]Julia's story stopped short there. After all, that had been the day Blackjack's mask had come off.

[break][break]"So what happened with you? When you met him, I mean?" Julia asked instead.

Julia had been taught not to judge people based on first impressions. After all, you never knew what they were going through, a lesson Julia had learned firsthand after her post-accident depressive period. That didn't represent her at all, but if that was all anyone knew about her, they would think she was just some miserable kid. But this person just kept rubbing Julia the wrong way, like sandpaper was being ghosted over her skin. It pressed down just a bit harder with every word Shizue said. Julia didn't have to rely on these bad vibes for long; Shizue's words made her realize something.

[break][break]"You're with Rocket, aren't you?" It was mostly a rhetorical question at this point. Who else called people in the League "fools" and "the quote unquote good guys"? At the word "Rocket," Chester's right head glared and let out an angry caw. This time, Julia didn't hesitate when she stepped forward. Her voice lowered into uncharacteristic seriousness:

[break][break]"Leave those Zubat alone. I don't know what you're planning to do with them—" Julia refused to think of them as just "parts," dead or not—"but I know it can't be anything good." Her hand hovered over the end of her Poké Ball belt, prepared to release a specific Pokémon. She had a feeling this woman wouldn't just give up and walk away because Julia told her to.

One good thing about this sudden influx of people was that they helped hide Julia's presence. Unfortunately, that also meant that Makoto was being blocked by this mass of frantic people.

[break][break]Oh, the heck with it. When had Julia ever been the sneaky type, anyway?

[break][break]"Excuse me!" she shouted over the din. "Sorry, 'scuse me, coming through!"

[break][break]Though a couple of folks were disgruntled over being interrupted, most of them shifted just enough to make a path for Julia to squeeze through. She looked around the tent, but there was no sign of Makoto. Had they left already? She emerged from the tent and immediately found Spot, who'd attempted to look cordial by offering a nod to Makoto before they'd departed.

[break][break]"Did you see which way they went?" Julia asked.

[break][break]Spot pointed with a paw in the direction Makoto had gone.

[break][break]"All right, let's go. I think I saw them take some papers from in there."

[break][break]Spot's mouth curled into an I-freaking-knew-it scowl. The two hurried through the hustle and bustle of the outpost, Julia not trying to hide her presence this time as she shouted "Excuse me!" and "Sorry!" when she had to push past people.

To El, this was an opportunity to prove themself. To Julia, it was an opportunity to do something good alongside a friend.

[break][break]El suggested the two ride on their Pokémon's backs to make this quicker. "Oh, good idea!" She released Chester from his Poké Ball, allowing him to stretch his legs and necks. "Hey, buddy, you feeling good enough to carry me for a bit?"

[break][break]The three heads silently consulted each other for a moment before nodding in unison. Even the left one, usually the most cautious of the trio, didn't seem worried.

[break][break]"All right, that's the spirit!" Once she was mounted up, she scratched each of Chester's three heads before she and El headed out on their Pokémon.

[break][break]"Hey, did you say you wanted to ask me something?" Julia asked as they traveled along the road.

That little Remoraid was handing out some heavy hits, much to the Rockets' disbelief and chagrin. They'd been so focused on the bigger threats that they'd just let Lucky shoot at their weak spots! It just went to show that it wasn't just about size and raw strength.

[break][break]Jett was calm and confident, even as the Steelix rushed toward him. He trusted Julia to have his back, and she wasn't about to let him down.

[break][break]"Chester, Lazuli, go!"

[break][break]Again, Chester ran forward, launched himself high into the air, and landed a Jump Kick square on the Steelix. The Iron Snake Pokémon came to a stop with an annoyed growl and turned to face Julia's team... just in time for Lazuli's Water Pulse to hit it square in the face. Its tough hide made physical attacks like Chester's little more than a nuisance, even with his Swords Dance boost, but the Water-type attacks being thrown at it seeped through the cracks.

[break][break]"Come on, Steelix!" its trainer shouted. "You're tougher than these guys! Show them what you've got!"

[break][break]The Steelix raised its head high and let out a metallic-sounding roar, the metal scraps around it spinning faster. The ground beneath Lazuli rumbled and cracked, then erupted with a Stone Edge. She sang out a low, weak note, and then her long neck drooped as her eyes slid shut. Julia quickly returned the fainted Lapras to her Ball.

[break][break]But, once again, the Steelix had made the mistake of turning its back to Jett and Lucky.

Her fingers slipped from the immovable stone, and she fell onto her backside with a grunt. The Dream Mists slinked away, leaving Julia with an all-too-clear view of Isaac's rocky tomb. No, no, it couldn't be a tomb. There was still a chance. All she had to do was get up and...

[break][break]As she tried to pull herself to her feet with trembling arms, the day's events hit her all at once. She was tired. She was so, so tired, and she hurt, outside and now in. She sat there, staring at the pile of rocks, too weighed down to move. She wanted to do something. She needed to do something. But she couldn't even move anymore. All she could do was stare helplessly at the pile of stone before her.

[break][break]She could have saved him. She could have noticed the cracks earlier and gotten them both out of the way before the ceiling fell. She could have accepted his offer to get away and rest instead of stubbornly insisting she was fine. She could have been the one to take the hit. She'd done it before, after all. She'd be fine. What was another leg lost compared to a friend's life?

[break][break]Tears welled up in her eyes, and for once, she didn't try to stop them. As they fell, she realized there was still one thing she could still do: She could cry.

[break][break]And so she did, face buried in her hands, muffling her sobs.

The cold, uncaring way this woman described harvesting the deceased Zubat left a bad taste in Julia's mouth. Sure, there were more Zubat in the world than most people wanted anything to do with, but treating them like this was still horrible.

Julia looked a bit confused when El didn't answer at first, but she chalked that up to them just getting distracted or something. She recalled her own Pokémon and waited for El to follow her outside.

[break][break]Before El could answer what was up, a frazzled-looking man in a high-ranking uniform jogged over to them. "Do either of you two have an assignment yet?"
