Frustration seeped in, and Lam frowned. Nothing was the point. He just kept missing it. It was probably too late and he was too taxed to make full sense of everything. But he couldn’t leave it alone. He couldn’t sit and stew in this with how awful it made him feel. Being at odds with Rook made him feel like he was crawling out of his skin. Restless and panicked and impulsive.[break][break]
Then the clarification came and Lam sighed, eyes sliding shut. Of course. It should’ve been obvious the way it came back around to that. It wasn’t as if he didn’t understand that fear, obviously. “Yeah, I remember,” he replied quietly, “And yeah, of course I’d be upset if you kept on going out. But it’s not a matter of you asking me to give something up, though. It’s not like..” he trailed, another long breath exhaling from his chest. “This isn’t just a matter of starting or stopping something, you know? It doesn’t matter if I want to go, it’s an obligation.”[break][break]
A beat passed, “And I don’t want to go waste my time on a random island, for the record,” he added, a bit sulkily.[break][break]
Lam shook his head, still bundled up in his blankets. Though he still didn’t look Rook’s way, at least that wet, cloying feeling like he was on the verge of crying had seemed to pass. “I know I don’t have to, Rook. I know you’ve survived a lot and can take care of yourself,” he retorted, something sharpening in his voice, though it was a far cry from anger, or even irritation. “But I don’t want you to feel like you have to keep surviving with me. I want you to feel safe.” He huffed. “Whatever. It’s stupid.”[break][break]
A whine crawled up his throat as the hiding place his covers provided were cruelly yanked away. He rolled on his back only for his big, sad eyes to be met with a foul look. “B–” a pillow collided with his face, smothering the babbling that wanted to follow. He tugged it away and gripped the corner before swinging it back at Rook. “What was I supposed to think?” he insisted, voice warping petulantly. “You didn’t talk to be for hours, and then you said it wasn’t enough!”[break][break]
It made sense to him, exhausted as he was, that it would be the worst case scenario. He’d feel stupid for it in the morning, probably. But right now in the heat of the moment, it felt like a real and pressing worry.

Maybe it was to their benefit that their opposition was busy bickering amongst themselves. It certainly set them back a few paces in the wake of their combine attacks.[break][break]
“Yikes!” His hand fumbled for Lars’ when the ranger reached out. His other arm came up to shield his face as the gale wind buffeted against them. His zigzagoon yipped nervously, spinning around as the hurricane pulled him to and fro. The Iron Bundle somehow planted itself, more quarks of sound echoing around them as the AURORA VEIL held firm.[break][break]
Once Jam Jam regained his bearing, he darted forward again—foliage sprouted up from the earth, traveling in tangles toward the Rocket pokemon, aiming to take them down with a volley of fumbling GRASS KNOTS

Lam wasn’t exactly a pro in how to navigate serious relationships, either. His experience in general hadn’t been that expansive in the first place, and so he acted on instinct. It didn’t always lead him correctly, though. Hence the stupid video call. Even though that felt miniscule now, compared to the unexpected distance that feel so much larger between them than it ever had.[break][break]
“I don’t think they’re all deadly,” he muttered in reply, “like you said, more harmless. It was sort of surprising how many were willing to actually forego a fight itself.” His brows knit together as he considered his conversation with Naomi Sato. The things she’d shown him in her effort to convince him that the fight between groups wasn’t the point. He didn’t really know where he fell, his opinions felt complicated. Not so black and white as others seemed to believe.[break][break]
But that was neither here nor there. Not right now. “I don’t know, Rook. It’s not enough, I know. I don’t know what you want, but I can’t do nothing, either.” He shrank under the blankets, trying make himself as small as he felt. “What if they came here? To Lilycove. Do you think I could just..sit by and let our home get destroyed? Let you get hurt?”[break][break]
Maybe others in the League climbed as high as they could for some great sense of justice or a do gooder mentality. That in doing so they would be known and loved and regarded with respect they thought they deserved. He didn’t feel so noble. It was expected, so he went. Responsibility hung on his shoulders, new and awkward. But it had never really been about looking good or putting Rockets in their place. All he wanted to do was keep what he cared about safe.[break][break]
He just wasn’t sure if there was a way to reconcile that, or make it feel okay. Maybe it wasn’t a possibility, he didn’t know. “If it’s not enough… If you want to leave, I understand.” The little, nagging fear tumbled out unintentionally, quiet and fretting. And now he definitely didn’t dare look in the other’s way, apprehensive of what Rook say or what his expression might give away.

Lam scans the area, looking for anything that might be useful. Ah, there! That one looks like easy pickins!” he points at a sandile, who takes offense to the insinuation. Claws take out in a SAND ATTACK, but Artichoke deflects with a shrouding sweep of his good wing. “Start slow! Don’t go all out yet,” Lam calls as he jogs the distance between the pair, back and forth to put in the work too. Sharp foliage slices down, a LEAF BLADE that makes the little croc skitter away.

Eventually he ushered the Psyduck back out of the water so that they could head back toward the main gate. On the way, though, something crossed their path and he stopped down to see the funky little bug pushing its dirt clod(?) along the path. “Huh.” Lam mused aloud as he fished one last safari ball from his pocket and tried gently tapping it.

[attr="class","text"] “Sure,” he agreed, the lift of his shoulder in tandem with the amused flicker of a smile at her supposed innocence. “Those are tricky little guys, aren’t they?” He nodded toward the unown-k that flickered away moments later, only to reappear in a blink. A somewhat incredulous scoff of laughter followed, though. “And you think I do?”[break][break]
Lam believed his job was that of an instructor and a guide, not a soldier. But somehow, he was there–filling an obligation that had somehow shifted within the League to fall on the shoulders of anyone who held some sort of higher ranking. Maybe not always explicitly stated, but it was there. The little nudges and pushes that it was a responsibility. A duty to the League, and to Hoenn itself.[break][break]
“If you’ll notice, none of these attacks have been sent at you.” The pointed look that punctuated his remark was one that subtly said, which is more than you can say, considering she’d already bowled him over once, and attempted a second.[break][break]
“Mallow,” Lam signaled the altaria to attention, “mirror.” While the Iron Jugulis charged, its counterpart seemed to as well. Her cloud-swathed frame began to glow with light–the build of energy preemptive to lifting into the air for a decisive SKY ATTACK.
He wasn’t sure what he was expecting. The culmination of force meeting force, maybe. But it definitely wasn’t the explanation she launched into instead. Lam’s head tilted, brows furrowing in confusion as he tried to follow the line of her thought. It was…strange, to say the least, but there was luck on her side.[break][break]
His hand extended. Not toward the woman, but toward Mallow–temporarily staying her from following through. His stare lifted to the stranger’s, however, as his other hand pointed at the Iron Jugulis with its open, glowing jaws. “How about this: both of us stand down, and then we’ll come to a conclusion. Power that down first.”[break][break]
If she agreed, he would do the same and call Mallow off. He wasn’t bluffing or setting her up in that regard. Hopefully she would be able to read that in how he carried himself, but Lam wasn’t going to count on that, either. “That’s, uh. Pretty big claim. You got, like…a report, or somethin’?” he said after a moment. He frowned, “Why shouldn’t I just take that information to our scientists and have them look into it?” It wasn’t an accusatory question. Just a simple one.

With Clove safely tucked into one arm, he holds out the opposite in offering for the swellow to perch on should she choose to. There are scratches under the beak in her future, if so.[break][break]

“You hear that? You’ll be a nightmare,” he says down to the sprigatito, who only chirps happily. Kinda hard to imagine her, with her gentle little nature, to be a dominating force in battle.[break][break]

Curious, she untangles herself and hops down from Lam’s arm. Then trots up to Greyson in greeting— wide, rosy eyes blinking up at him. Her fluffy tail swishes quietly behind her. Expectant. “Yeah, maybe she will,” Lam says after a beat, “if she ever outgrows being held like a baby.”

His heart lurched when the creak of the floorboards signaled the traveling of feet in the hall. The sink at the corner of the mattress told him that Rook had settled there, but unlike his hopeful glances earlier, he didn’t move. He stayed still, letting his breath catch in his throat. Part of him wondered if he was imagining this. Or if maybe he’d fallen into fitful sleep and was dreaming what he’d like to happen next.[break][break]
And if he turned toward the other side where Rook was sitting, would he actually be there? Or would it be empty air that told him his mind was playing a mean trick on him?[break][break]
But then Rook’s voice lifted into the silence that had filled the room apart from his restless turning, and his heart thrummed again. Lam let out a breath, long and slow, though he didn’t know what to say that he already hadn’t said. “Okay,” he replied, voice far quieter and still resigned. “But I was scared too, you know.” He wanted relief from this, he wanted to hide under the lip of the blanket.[break][break]
He didn’t know what he should want if Rook wasn’t going to budge.[break][break]
“I don’t know what else to say,” his voice crumpled, helpless as he was, “I don’t know how to make it better. I love you, I made sure I came home to you.” A slight shudder in his shoulders made the mass of blankets shake once, then still as he pulled himself back in, and clamped down.

This was the worst. What he would’ve preferred to do was slink back out to the living room. To even just sit near Rook would have been fine. But Rook hadn’t even been able to look at Lam. His eyes fell toward the doorway, empty and void of any appearance. A stupid hope. He turned back toward the wall.[break][break]
His stomach hurt too much to feel any sort of appetite. It wasn’t really all that late in the evening, but he wasn’t hungry. He didn’t want to do anything but lay there. Steeped in the oppressive, heavy feeling. Willing himself into unconsciousness got him nowhere. No matter how hard he squeezed his eyes shut, the worry that he’d well and truly messed up beyond repair continued to coil through his system.[break][break]
But if Rook wanted to leave, like really wanted to–he’d just go, right? He wouldn’t hang out on the couch. It was a logical thought, a smart one. But it wasn’t enough to settle the guilt he felt.[break][break]
He should’ve been more careful. He shouldn’t have risked that fight, even if he hadn’t known the extent to which he’d been injured. Lam hadn’t been kidding when he’d told Rook that he tried, that he took the safer paths when they were presented to him. But he couldn’t help that other people weren’t so predictable or benevolent.[break][break]
It wasn’t as if he hadn’t been scared, too. That fleeting moment, sprawling on the deck of that boat, he’d felt that fear. It wasn’t the same sort of terror he’d felt the night he’d come back from the deep sea. It had been more resolute. Factual in nature– this is just the way it is. It wasn’t as if Lam felt careless to the risks, or was being trivial about it.[break][break]
Though maybe he’d seemed that way in their call. But that was a mistake–an attempt to get ahead of the problem. Stupid, he was stupid.[break][break]
Another pitiful sigh slipped free, eyes studying the rest of the room in his immediate line of vision. All of it cast in gloomy shapes from the dark. His throat felt tight, like he couldn’t take a real good breath. But he didn’t let himself cave in on himself. Not again. He swallowed the feeling and felt it stick in his throat, heavy and cloying.[break][break]
Lam bit his lip, teeth sinking into soft skin until the bite of it made the feeling pass. It didn’t stay gone for long, though, of course. There wasn’t really any way to alleviate the feeling unless Rook talked to him. Or just gave him some sort of sign that it would be okay.

“Rook..” he trailed after the other helplessly, voice edging toward a protesting whine. He wanted to insist further, but there was something firm in Rook’s voice. Unwavering. He shifted on his feet, “But… alright.” In the end, he couldn’t argue that he’d earned the spot on the couch. It was too easy to agree with what Rook wanted. He was too tired to try, and maybe if he relented, Rook would come around.[break][break]
He at least wouldn’t give any other reason for Rook to be more upset with him. Lam drooped as he watched his partner retreat back out of their room, and suddenly it felt too big for just him. There was too much space in their bed. (Something he’d never protested to before, given how much he liked to stretch out when he could get away with it.) He peeled himself out of the joggers and jacket he’d been wearing to trade them for comfier clothes.[break][break]
An awkward endeavor, with the plaster cast making his movements clunky and clumsy. He managed to pull on shorts and his comfiest hoodie before sliding under the covers. But as exhausted as he was, Lam couldn’t settle. He switched from one side to the other, fumbling to roll without hitting his arm. He added pillows, blankets. None of it worked, he was too uneasy. Back turned away from the door, he let out a defeated huff, eyes squeezing shut as he tried to burrow further beneath the covers.[break][break]
No sleep came.[break][break]
There was only the uneasy spiral of his thoughts and the uncertainty of not knowing what Rook was thinking. It made his stomach hurt, a pit forming there that wouldn’t ease without knowing it would be okay. Maybe it wouldn’t be. What would he do then?[break][break]
He didn’t know, beyond the obvious reaction of absolute misery. Rook had carved out a space in Lam’s world, and there was nothing that could fill it now but him. His breath dragged in shakily, but he forced himself to exhale slowly. Though it didn’t really make him feel any better.

Both of them are still in the recovery phase - matching arm and wing bindings signaling a shared inability to put in a hundred percent just yet. But that didn't mean they had to end up entirely out of practice, right? Artichoke hoots pleasantly in agreement. Always on the same wavelength, the two of them.

It was good to see an enthusiastic reaction to challenging his gym. Fledgling as it was, Lam was still getting into the swing of it. So to hear that someone actually looked forward to a future battle? Well, it warmed his little rookie gym leader heart. “Ha! That’d just give away the surprise.” A lot of his combos didn’t remain consistent, but some did. “Nice try, though.” His grin betrayed a sense of amusement at her moxie.[break][break]
The rattling of a nearby trashcan on the street corner alerted him to a nosy raticate. It clicked its front teeth together, clawed little hands lifting in the effort to ward away his shinx. Noodle was unbothered, darting forward with a SHOCK WAVE rolling out ahead of him to stun the rat. Lam snagged it with a pokeball before the shinx could bully it some more.[break][break]
Her rambling drew a laugh from him and he waved a hand. “Naw I get it, sometimes aesthetic really does hit right.” His head tilted in time to the sudden beep of her pager, then nodded as she announced her need to exit. “I’ll hold you to it,” he replied cheerfully, fist lifting to return the bump before he went his own way, toward home. All the while wondering what exactly a ‘late night mishie’ was.

He followed Peaches down to the shore like, content to let the psyduck wade in the shallow water to her heart's content. Unexpectedly, something rose to the surface, causing her to flail backward with a series of startled quacks. The poor relicanth was just checking the scene out, but the reaction caused Lam to throw a safari ball out of instinct. It snapped the fish inside, and he sighed as he shook his head at the now-confused psyduck as she looked back at him with a tilt of her head.
