[attr="class","text"]“You’re really selling it to me, babe.” Fingers brushed back Rook’s hair in comfort, even as he teased him. It was worse to fight the sickness, but of course Rook did his best to. His eyes rolled at the insistence, “And I still don’t care.” A fond smile settled on his lips, though. It felt right, taking care like this. Instinctive, even.[break][break]
He huffed out a breath, “Don’t have to, sure,” he agreed as he continued to fret over him and dab at his face with the cloth, “but I want to.” Why wouldn’t he? Reaching up into one of the crates that had been stacked in there with his other hand, he fumbled around until he pulled out a bottle of mouthwash and presented it in offering.[break][break]
Tilting inward where he had scooched down, he rocked forward on his toes and planted his hands on either side of Rook’s face before planting a kiss on that far too-warm forehead. An amused bubble of laughter pressed against his hair. “Yeah, honeydew. You’re a total smoke show. Even when you’ve just barfed your guts out..”[break][break]
Lam rose with him, arms out to let his hands curl under Rook’s elbows as his legs pushed him up unsteadily. “I got ya.” He shot Rook a pointed look, one brow rising. “We got all of our stuff moved over, it can wait a day or two for all of it to get unpacked.”[break][break]
The gym could wait too—what was important right now was making sure that Rook actually took it easy. Because Lam had a sneaking suspicion that he would attempt to not.[break][break]
“Hang out here for a second, ‘kay?” he pointed at a lone kitchen chair before he moved to tip over the mattress that had been haphazardly and temporarily propped up against their couch. “I’ll get the bedding, and stuff. It’ll be like…a slumber party and stuff.”[break][break]
If Rook protested, well then Lam was ready to protest back.

Nestled in Lilycove sits a comfortable little house, shared by two and their various companions. Washed in the warmth of the city’s climate, and bright, cheery personality, it wasn’t long before the space became more, became home.[break][break]
Given the width to decorate as one pleased outside of the regulations set by strict apartments, as it would turn out, was a freeing thing. No longer cramped in the tiny matchbox space, holed up in the smoggy high rises of lower end Slateport, they were free to build life as they saw fit.[break][break]
Theirs.[break][break]
Whims were humored, maybe even entertained. Perhaps they might paint their kitchen walls green, or blue, or both. The halls could be plain, or they could be littered with Polaroids and ceiling stars. Mismatched furniture and odd items like the gold purrloin statuette by the door. There was no one there to tell them it was against protocol, or too childish for a pair of adults to dress their house up in concepts like because it looks fun.[break][break]
And if they did choose to decorate like two adults twice their age—sleek and neat and minimalist in sand tones and eggshell white and, ugh, beige, well then that would be alright too. Because that would be their decision as well.[break][break]
But it is the attached house off of the sunroom with its wide, bay windows that take up the walls that he goes to do his thinking. A repurposed greenhouse in the backyard connected by one door that opens up to what he fondly calls The Hutch though it’s much bigger, of course. A space he immediately found himself taken with and desperate to fulfill a long held idea through—once it was thoroughly confirmed that he nor Rook really intended on doing any serious garden tending.[break][break]

Birdbaths and greenery clutter the space. The twist of branches from small, potted trees and hung swings and perches give space for the flock of pidove he refuses to stop adding to. Unfeazant and tranquill also reside there, along with a few swablu, but the space is for the smaller city fowl. And it is there, amid their soft, peaceful cooing that he goes to think. Sometimes to create.[break][break]

Tucked to one side is a small desk and stool and easel. The top of it all littered with paper and charcoal and also a fair bit of birdseed and loose feathers from the treats he keeps tucked in the drawers.[break][break]
It’s funny how creativity returned after he left the gallery. How it is once again tethered to his thoughts. Sometimes the rain patters on the glass roof and he paints in shades of gray. Sometimes the sunlight streams through and his charcoals are swapped for pastels.[break][break]
No matter the mood or fixation of his mind, when he needs to sort it out, this is where he goes.

“Sure! That’s the point, after all,” Lam agreed with a nod. “To see who you work best with, and also to see if you can figure out ways to work with those who might not be ideal team ups.” Whether that be simple clashing of personalities, or team differences. “A lot of people seem to be enjoying coming along with a friend though.” And Lam had encountered some strong match ups, for sure! He was certain that whenever Josh turned up, he’d bring a good match with him—there was no doubt in Lam’s mind about that. [break][break]
A quiet ah of understanding slipped free as Josh clarified. “That makes sense.” Like the altaria that had mirrored Mallow when they’d raced in Lam’s own gym match. Lam laughed at the purugly’s antics, “He looks like he’s got a lot of spirit, though.” Lam squatted down next to the feline, observant from a short distance. “Have you ever had a more eccentric challenger pokemon like any of these before?” Nearby, his spinda returned to rummaging around in the grass.

“Thanks,” Lam replied as Lars helped steady his footing against the onslaught of wind.[break][break]
“Hm, let’s see,” Lam squinted, then stooped down to see if he could see anything scattered on the ground beneath the torrent of flame that the salazzle continued to spew. His own zigzagoon, meanwhile, continued his pursuit of the aromatisse.[break][break]
Jam Jam darted away from it as it tried to subdue him with a DRAINING KISS before twisting back toward to fire off a poisonous TERA BLAST that hit it square in the tummy.[break][break]
“There!” Lam pointed at an unfolded paper scattered among several on the ground. They must’ve dropped it in the frenzy. “A map should be useful, yeah?” Especially if it had marked base locations.

But sure enough, at the suggestion of standing down, she did so. A relief, to be sure—if he could walk away from a fight rather than see one to the end, he’d prefer it.[break][break]
Wary as he might’ve been, he was one to keep his word. “Good.” Lam stepped over to the altaria, fingers curling under her beak affectionately as he murmured to her. “Deal’s a deal.” Mallow continued to eye the woman, even as the glow of her mounting attack faded. She cooed quietly, crystalline head craning down to bump against Lam’s protectively before she disappeared within the confines of her own pokeball once again.[break][break]
His brow lifted, “And how exactly do you think that’d be received? Probably not well.” Lam let out a snort of dry laughter. ‘Oh hey, had a nice chat with a rocket scientist chick when we were supposed to be fighting and uhhh, we’re all missing the mark.’ Yeah, that’d fly. “That’s all above me, though. If they are, which I figure they must be if you are, I’m not privy to that.”[break][break]
All he could really do was guess at what they were up to.[break][break]
Lam’s attention floated away from her, toward the unown as it watched him. That large eye, unblinking, as it stared straight through him. It was enough to leave him with the shiver of a chill. Unnerving.[break][break]
“Not sure what you mean by that,” he said, stepping a pace closer. His murkrow remained vigilant on his shoulder, but inert. “But yeah, proof would be nice.”

There are several more pidove, tranquill, and unfeazant that reside in the miniature aviary Lam keeps. Some of his other small birds also reside in the space. Stray swablu, pidgey, taillow, rookidee, and fletching are not uncommon to find.[break][break]

Common trends in names tend to be foods, herbs, and spices, or the most standard sorts of people names.

As they left, he let Clove down to the sidewalk to trot along with them. His brows had furrowed together as he studied Rook’s reaction, looking for any signal of his reaction to what had just happened. They’d barely spent any time inside the cramped apartment at all.[break][break]
The perky response shouldn’t have been too surprising—that natural urge of Rook’s act as if he were fine. An instinctive subduing of his feelings to avoid burdening anyone else. “Uh, yeah, sure. Any of those are fine—whichever you’d be more excited to go back to, I guess.”[break][break]
It was that tiny, barely noticeable snag in his voice that caught Lam, though. Compounded with everything that had just happened—the way Rook had faltered in his father’s presence, though he’d spoken his mind, that little hitch in his breath made Lam’s heart ache severely.[break][break]
Rook’s hand slipped into his and Lam let him tug him in the direction he wanted to go, but after a moment he pulled the other back to face him. “Hey,” his voice dropped quieter and softer as he cupped Rook’s face. Palm pressing there warm and firm as his thumb swept over the curve of his cheek.[break][break]
“I am so, so proud of you, baby.” His other hand rose to join the first in cradling his partner’s face. The tiniest of cajoling smiles tugged at the corners of his mouth, a gentle thing. “I know that wasn’t easy for you, but you did so good.”[break][break]
Leaning up, he kissed the tip of Rook’s nose, careful to keep his eyes on Rook’s. “Maybe now he’ll figure out what a great kid he has. He’s losin’ out.”

He wasn’t at the very top of the pile, but the mix he’d come up with hadn't done too terribly, either! That was a confidence boost for sure. It at least helped in the arena of his flavor combinations. Though when the next round’s focus came up, Lam sighed. “We shoulda saved that one for this round, huh?” Artichoke shrugs his good wing as if to say What can ya do? Clearly he wasn’t too concerned.[break][break]

Lam taps his chin as he deliberates what route to go down. “How ‘bout we go for some warm, fall flavors for the season?” And what better tea to brew for crisp, cool autumn day than a good, spicy chai?[break][break]

Setting up the tea to brew and the boba to soften, he ducks back to the ingredients station for a few different fruits and flavors that he’s certain will blend well with the warmer spices of the drink[break][break]

“Keep an eye on the boba for me, my dude,” Lam calls to the decidueye as he peels and chops up some golden figs to dump in the little food processor at his station along with some sugar and a teeny bit of vanilla syrup. Artie hoots with utmost seriousness as he fixes wide amber eyes on the warm pot of soaking tapioca pearls—soft and tacky and brown sugared.[break][break]

The strength of the spicy kick from the chai is mixed with a creamy blend of coconut milk and extract, then swirled with the fig purée. The thicker consistency makes the drink a bit heartier as it’s poured over the fresh boba and ice. Before he seals it off, though, he tops the drinks with some freshly shaved and toasted coconut flakes. Like it had come right from an alolan exeggcutor, no less! A subtle callback to his home region. [break][break]

Both good fruits to match with chai, but good together? He’s never tried it, actually.[break][break]

“Can’t go wrong with a good chai,” he chirps as he plops the finished product down for the judges to evaluate—fingers crossed the fig does bode well with the coconut as well.

Lam definitely isn't aware of the impact his words have. But that doesn't make them any less sincere. He's never really minded the reports about Cian as an informant, or his ex-rocket status.[break][break]

As far as Lam's concerned, Cian's just a cool dude. That's what matters.[break][break]

"I'll hold ya to that when I'm too lazy to pack boxes," he replies, laughing. Eventually, his cramorant get tired of diving and waddle back to shore.[break][break]

He perks up at the invite. "Oh, hell yeah! I'm definitely game."

A grin settled on his face at the compliment. "Thanks! It's been busy, but a nice change of pace." His attention swiveled away momentarily as Daisy seemed to come across something. She swung a tilted DIZZY PUNCH and an addled lechonk stumbled out of the brush for Lam to toss a pokeball at. "Stop by anytime - and yeah, taking on the challenge with someone is ideal, but totally not mandatory! A doubles match with your down team works too."[break][break]
Lam watched Josh switch between pokemon with curiosity. A purugly? Interesting. Really, they were all an eclectic bunch. "Any rhyme or reason to these picks?" he asked, eyes darting to the espartha tromping through the grass with ease because of its long legs. "They all seem, uh, pretty unconventional."

She does her best to retaliate, she really does, but the double whammy of the paralytic DRAGON'S BREATH stunning Peaches in place followed by the onslaught of MAGICAL LEAVES that smack into her sends the psyduck crashing back to the sandy floor. Her tail swishes, trying to conjure up one last AQUA TAIL to swing at either of their opponents, but it sputters out. In a bright, shattering explosion of lilac and magenta, the terastralization that had encased Peaches falters and disappears as she faints with one last, dramatic PSSSYYYY...[break][break]

Lam clicks his tongue, amused at her theatrics, and recalls her in a beam of light. "Annnnd that's a match!" he calls toward the two challengers with a lopsided grin. "Nice work, dudes! I wasn't sure if you'd manage to work together, but you came through!" Making his way toward the center of the pitch again, he holds out two matching badges in offering. TMs wait at the front desk as well. "You've definitely earned these." With his other hand, he flashes a thumbs up.

"Aw, dangit.." Lam huffs as the murkrow flaps away leaving nothing behind except scattered black feathers. "We'll get 'em next time." Sooner rather than later as a bisharp surges forward toward Artichoke with a feral NIGHT SLASH of her sharp bladed arms. The decidueye lets out a startled hoot and pushes backward out of the way.[break][break]

Disgruntled hoots follow as Artichoke's LONG REACH allows him to smack the bisharp away with a SUCKER PUNCH from his good wing. He blinks wide amber eyes at Lam and the gym leader doesn't need to be told twice - together, they book it outta there.

“Good job, dude,” he calls out, but Artie is already on the move again—striking out with FRENZY PLANT at a murkrow nested in the foliage. Vines lash at the bird and send it tumbling.[break][break]
Lam tries to catch it, but with his arm bound up, his balance is off and so his aim is too. The pokeball falls wide to the left of the murkrow and the lapse gives the corvid enough time to get its bearings before it flutters away with a loud CAW.

Nothing he said was working. He could feel that helpless agitation creep in again. Why couldn’t he say anything right? Contrary to Rook’s belief, Lam didn’t think Rook was weak in the slightest. But he fell silence as Rook continued to protest.[break][break]
The snap made him wince back, and he shook his head–frustrated. “No, that’s not what I meant. It’s just, that’s not usually what happens, so it caught me off guard. You can process how you want to.” He just hadn’t expected it, hadn’t seen this sort of response coming because Rook was normally so loud in how he felt.[break][break]
But it had made him feel that much more guilty, hadn’t it? Or really, it only exacerbated a guilt that had already existed, because he’d known the second he’d gotten hurt that it wouldn’t go over well, and maybe he should have just disengaged with Theo like he had with the others. Not that he could go back and undo it, or had even had the time in the moment. But he would have, if it spared them this.[break][break]
Suddenly, though, it felt like this reaction might have come on his return whether he’d had a broken arm or a minor cut. He didn’t understand, he couldn’t read the thoughts that ran through Rook’s mind–especially not in the current moment, but something about Rook’s resilience and his frustration seemed to go beyond what was presented. It didn’t feel like he was about to understand exactly what was going on. Maybe he wouldn’t just yet.[break][break]
If he didn’t want to turn this into an even bigger argument, he’d have to be okay with that for now. He realized that when Rook crumpled in on himself, hands hiding away his face. It made Lam’s chest ache, and he tried to tamp down the guilt again. He didn’t want this fight, his justifications quieted.[break][break]
With a grunt, Lam pulled himself upright. A task that proved more difficult than he’d thought. The hours that had passed and actually slowing down for the first time in a few days gave his muscles time to catch up and stiffen as he’d been laying there. But he scooted along the side of the bed regardless of the effort it required until his thigh bumped into Rook’s. His body threatened to sag on contact, but he held himself carefully in place, fully prepared to back off if he was told to.[break][break]
Carefully, using his good hand, Lam smooth over Rook’s hair and then cupped his face, leaning in so that their foreheads pressed together. “It’s okay,” he murmured, shifting again so that his arm could slide down and turn Rook’s body inward toward him. Wrap his arms around him the way he’d wanted to from the start. Even if the plastered one was clumsy as it thumped lightly against Rook’s back.[break][break]
“I’m dumb, I know.” It was more of a consoling coo than true self-deprecation. Soothing agreement. “You’re dating a big dummy. But he loves you.” His chin tucked against the curve of the other’s shoulder. “You’re okay. It’s okay.” He didn’t know what else to say, but that.
