[attr="class","text"] Worry churns in their stomach. Even to have him awake after so long doesn’t quell the tumult of it. They feel restless, unable to settle until they know he’s back.[break][break]

Fern thinks, for a second, that maybe he is. And then–[break][break]

And then they can see the shift in his demeanor–the sharp snap from something settled to agitated. They can feel how quickly the temperature in his skin drops, likely without even meaning for it to.[break][break]

Fern’s questioning ceases abruptly, jaw snapping shut as their hands slide up to find his face. Warm palms against the icy bite of his cheeks. “Mischa,” they whisper, voice edging on something frantic, “A mhuirnín, it’s okay.”[break][break]

The name drops from his tongue, frigid and tangible, and Fern frowns as their brows furrow together. “What about him?” Is that what he saw? While Fern was saddled with Alexei, is Matias the one who plagued him? Their hands smooth over his face, sort through the messy strands of hair against his forehead.[break][break]

“Don’t worry, he’s not here. It’s okay.”

There is something in their chest that feels cracked in two. Maybe it’s not their heart breaking that he can’t remember, but it feels close to it. For a moment, their throat feels tight, but they swallow it and the flurry of what ifs that want to rise like a tide in the wake of this turn.[break][break]

They fold to the hand that cradles their face, cheek pressing against the cupped hand because how can they not? How can they not?[break][break]

“Yeah,” they mutter through that cloying feeling in their windpipe. “Just a long day.” And when he kisses them, they lean into it, desperate to feel that connection. To cling to it after what leaves him feeling strangely bereft, even though he is still here, still theirs.[break][break]

They don’t know how to grapple with the sensation, the desperate grief of it. If they weren’t so exhausted, perhaps they would attempt to stoke that fire into a greater blaze. Fall into him until they forgot too.[break][break]

But fatigue is heavy on their bones. “I love you too, darling.”[break][break]

Maybe that is all they need to hear.[break][break]

And maybe he will remember in the morning.

There’s an anger in them for what has happened. An indignant burn that wants to insist that they would prefer to be the one who deals that arrogant fool the final blow.[break][break]

But they are so, so tired. Tired and in pain and slowed by the medication still in their system.[break][break]

But they are soothed by Jayden’s presence around them, the tuck of his face against their neck and the warmth of their breath as their sore body curls into him and relaxes.[break][break]

Blue eyes flutter shut and a dim smile flits across their face. It’s sweet–having someone willing to kill for them. “That would be nice, duck,” they murmur back drowsily.[break][break]

“That would be very, very nice.”

A trill of laughter. Light, like some of their first interactions. Like the night of their first kiss. A time when they felt just a little more carefree than they have in recent days, weeks, months.[break][break]
“Did I really?” they laugh, glance only partially registering the sudden return of light, and the presentation laid out on the table. They take it in absently, but they are too fixated on spinning around, still pressed against him as their arms slide around his neck.[break][break]
“If so, then that’s terribly silly of you,” they murmur, smile curling in a crookedly coy way before they close the distance and seek him out with their mouth. Eager, after the little build in anticipation.[break][break]
When they lean back, they tut at him–a playful chide. “I would know you anywhere, duck.” Fern leans up to nibble at his chin affectionately. “Anywhere.” Even just by voice alone.[break][break]
And then they turn to look over their shoulder at the scene again, eyes bright. “You’ve been up to something, though, hm? What is all this?” Okay, they can sort out the soft, warm scent of the candles and the Galarian cuisine. The beauty of the crystabloom captured in a jar. But it is the jewelry box they fix their scrutiny upon, stare darting between it and his face with a questioning tilt of their head.

They’ve read the reports from Mt. Pyre, of course. Was there to hear it communicated over their radio, though they didn’t see the gory remnants of the DRK Triad member. There was the game and the RKS simulation, sure, but that just been an illusion. Digital recreation.[break][break]
Unless the landscape of the machine had somehow grown.[break][break]
“Well,” they reply in a dramatic titter, arms folding, “whatever he’s up to, it was a lousy trick.” Clearly, the man has lost his touch. Probably something to do with being two messy and very separate pieces now.[break][break]
But whatever. It’s rather inconvenient, and Fern would very much like to dive back under their blankets and huddle for warmth, thank you very much.[break][break]
Fern checks themself over similarly, and comes up short as well. “To think I’ll have to start keeping a pokeball in my bedclothes..” they grumble to themself, “the nonsense of it.”[break][break]
With a groan, they heave upward with Jayden’s help, stretching the sleep from their limbs as they do so. A look around betrays nothing out of the ordinary. Quiet, mostly dark. “At least the city isn’t bustling..”[break][break]
What an embarrassment that would be–traipsing down the cobbles in their pajamas. The chill on the underside of their heels indicates bare feet as well.[break][break]
“Are we very far from home?” they squint, trying to make out any familiar street signs.

To be aggressively pulled from sleep isn’t exactly at the top of Fern’s list of enjoyed things.[break][break]

They’ve grown used to jayden cross’s poor sleep habits. Have only sometimes been able to coax him back to rest without the use of the new medication he takes. But for the most part, they’ve adapted to his restlessness so that it doesn’t stir them all that often now.[break][break]

This, however, is different.[break][break]

It’s like coming up from underwater. The muffled sound of voices, their vision bleary as wakefulness is thrust upon them. Fern lifts halfway, squinting in the dark so that they can feel for Jayden’s familiar form. “Mmnn..what’s goin’ on?”[break][break]

The sluggish crawl of drowsiness is ripped off Fern like a bandaid, or being dunked in ice water when the portal opens up and sucks Jayden in. They try to reach and pull him back, but the consequence is getting sucked in by the force of it too.[break][break]

And then they are just…elsewhere.[break][break]

Fern’s face screws up in the twist of a frown, somewhat pouty in their yank out of grogginess. “Of course I was going to come after you,” they huff matter-of-factly.

It’s only a given–no matter waking or sleeping or sort of sleeping. Any of it. They didn’t even think about it.[break][break]

Just… grabbed whatever part of him they could when he was suddenly portaled. (They’re pretty sure it was his leg.) It all happened so fast. They didn’t even hear the conversation, or register the fact that it was Father Winter in their bedroom (why can’t he just stay bi-sected?)[break][break]

All they know now is that they’re in some other part of the city in the middle of the night for no discernible reason whatsoever.[break][break]

They lean into his touch, only to shiver at the chill of his fingers against their skin.[break][break]

“Mm, yeah. Bit of a rough landing, but I’m pretty sure I’m in one piece.”[break][break]

A hand lifts to rub at blue eyes, confusion setting in again.[break][break]

“What even happened..? What–who was that?”

The trembling has to stop sometime. Even the heave of their breath slows as they remain pressed against him. Snared in his arms is the only place they want to be when it feels like their chest is caving in.[break][break]

Until it starts to feel okay again, until their mind is no longer addled by illusion and blood that no longer stains them.[break][break]

Despite how permanent it feels.[break][break]

Tapu Koko floats back over, head tilting owlishly as it inspects its chosen. Fern looks up at it too after a moment. The heels of their hands rub at their damp eyes.[break][break]

“Thank you,” they say to it as it stares. And though it doesn’t look like it, something forges between them in that moment. A more genuine trust despite exterior appearances.[break][break]

“Thank you too,” they murmur as their head tucks against the crook of Jayden’s neck again. “For being here, for following me.”[break][break]

They’d been lost.[break][break]

But it would have been far worse if they’d been lost without him.

He certainly wasted no time at all— which suited Fern just fine. He barreled forward as well, carried forward faster than the average person thanks to Tapu Koko’s blessing. His hands clasped around the arms of a leaguer, sending volts of electricity from his palms into the bare skin of the poor ranger’s arms, stunning him where he stood.[break][break]

Tapu Koko wrought similar havoc nearby. Flares of electricity flowed from the island deity as it latched onto any Pokémon that tried to stand up to it.[break][break]

The admin’s glance moved toward his other pokemon— the sableye fired off another blinding POWER GEM at a startled dedenne, while Niskus was unfortunately sent tumbling by a flurry of DAZZLING GLEAMS from an rather persistent sylveon. He sighed as he recalled the goodra, and let Tapu Koko take care of the eeveelution in the form of an ELECTRO BALL.[break][break]

Too bad we don’t have any explosives, am I right?” he called over jovially as league operatives scrambled and scattered. Now that would’ve been a sight.

Tapu Koko exercises the art of overkill, oblivious to the efforts of Jayden also trying to extinguish the paradox Pokémon. It sails forward, pincers stabbing at the metal before it dissipates into nothing.[break][break]

And even then, it continues to swing at the ground where it had been heaped.[break][break]

Fern only stares ahead. Blankly, at nothing. Until Mischa is there and their vision is swimming in violet. In him.[break][break]

The fog in their mind begins to clear, but they stare up at him blankly for a moment. “What..?” Their voice is dreamlike, confused.[break][break]

And then it rolls over them again and their expression crumbles as they lean forward, forehead pressing against his shoulder as their own begin to quake.

SHORE: Fern vs Kaz

“This is all getting a tad boring, don’t you think?” Fern calls down from the air as Tapu Koko darts around, furious that it still has not brought down the beast. “Let’s wrap things up, shall we?” he claps his hands together, and for once, Tapu Koko actually obliges and listens.[break][break]

Once more its shield snaps together to drive into the sand. This time it will not break rank as it lets the tide of NATURE’S MADNESS flow out toward the tyrantrum. It’s a spectacle to witness, all pink and blue and purple lashes of crackling energy that flare out from the source.[break][break]

But Fern unfortunately is distracted from the display as their Roaring Moon banks to an angle, taking the brunt of the GIGAVOLT HAVOC against her belly. Electricity runs up her sides as she howls and bellows, but Fern remains unbothered. Static makes their hair stand at odd ends but they only gasp in mock surprise.[break][break]

“That woulda been a shock!” His own dragon circles, pouring a flume of FLAMETHROWER fire down toward them. “Good thing I’m blessed by my good buddy over there!” Tapu Koko spirals up into the air in acknowledgement.[break][break]

“It’s been fun, but I think I’ll take my leave now, if it’s all the same to you!”

The pair of them are a sorry mess. Fern, lost to the hallucination of the mist, and Jayden to the fury that builds so easily within him now. Whether it is because of Fern’s grief, loud and smothering, or not, it is still a blinding rage and the temperature drops sharply.[break][break]

Unlike the day in the cave of origins, they are unable to move. To make an effort to pull him from the fog. Interdream mist is sickly and cloying in their lungs, in their mind. [break][break]

But rather it is the furious pulse of DISCHARGE from Tapu Koko that torches the metal creature, short circuiting its wiring until it is heap of smoking remnants as the TRI ATTACK knocks Fern back.[break][break]

Tapu Koko, in its protectiveness and fury. Its pity and its benevolence.

His words time with the mega sized flapple’s next attack– and of course, this is likely intentional given her aesthetic. The flapple bursts from the apple shell again with another grassy attack that bursts forward toward the inteleon that she continues to heckle. A G-MAX TARTNESS that is as sour and acidic as Fern insinuates in his banter.[break][break]

“Is there?” he flaps a hand idly. Teeth gritting as the houndstone vanishes and reemerges to smack out against the flapple, sending her rolling with an outraged shriek.[break][break]

They cast baleful eyes on the Tapu Koko who continues to watch and let Fern do the heavy lifting. They know this is payback for a different battle further down the open shore, where their roles were reversed.

The watery attack comes for the crystallized typhlosion, and though the attack is not as detrimental as it might have normally been, it still sends Nim skidding backward before she charges forward again, the blaze of spectral flame a steady INFERNAL PARADE that proceeds in rapid succession to the reappeared canine.

When she is pulled from the sky, they are pulled with her. The snap of the Roaring Moon’s tail catches their dragapult as she shrieks warning. It happens too suddenly to prevent the spin out, and as they collide with the earth, they decide that perhaps hubris has finally caught up with them.[break][break]

They should remember her from another life too, maybe. But they don’t. Their only thought is of the sky pillar. The shared fondness of its occupants and the austere ancientness of it all. They have that at least, in the ebb and flow of their consciousness before what is left fixates on Jayden as heavy shards of stone pull him down with them. Their mask, cracked from the fall, is pulled free and tossed away carelessly.[break][break]

“Duck—“ what strength they can muster pulls them over broken earth, clawing arm by clawing arm. Medb, far less gentle than his other, licks her own wounds, but watches the salamence above with baleful eyes.[break][break]

There is a halo of silver-spun hair fanned from the woman nearby, protectively guarded by her own Roaring Moon. Fern eyes her carefully, but their cheeky quips and violent chaos is silenced. Subdued as they give out. They do not understand the connection that passes between the other two, and they are too exhausted to care.[break][break]

Unsure of where Tapu Koko retreated to, Fern crumples alongside their partner in the shadow of Vodnik who stands guard alongside Melusine.[break][break]

The sounds of battle and nature’s upheaval waning to only white noise and the rumbles and chuffs of dragon-sound.
