“Unfortunate,” Fern tutted, “Hopefully we can find something to power it again. There might be something useful in those records.” What, exactly, he wasn’t sure, but any information was at least somewhat pertinent. “Could be an important tourist trap,” he replied with a loose shrug. The deliberation was forced to fall by the wayside, though, as they were rudely intercepted.[break][break]
And the last thing they needed was to endure another blacephalon detonation because they were busy pondering the importance of prominent buildings versus holes in the walls.[break][break]
“Good, because there’s no time to waste.” Somehow, he still manages to be chipper.[break][break]
It was strange, carrying others with him—he hadn’t tried that before, and it felt a little more taxing. However, he’d spare Kelpie the knowledge that he’d basically enacted a test run with her and Purrseus as the subjects. Instead, he’d just be grateful that as they slowed back down to a halt, there were no spontaneous combustions, and there was now space between them and the threat.[break][break]
For the time being, at least.[break][break]
“Ah— terribly sorry about your heel,” Fern apologized as he watched her throw the shoe away. Of course, there really wasn’t much to be done about it. In little to no time, they had found their way inside the building and all thoughts of broken heels had been lost to his preoccupation with the place[break][break]
“Do you think you’ll find anything of use here? Maybe connected to your laptop?” Fern asked as they found themselves in a wide, high-ceilinged lobby area. He looked around with wide eyes, doing his best to pinpoint something that might prove useful, or be whatever it was that Tapu Koko was searching for.[break][break]
The deity only flitted around the room erratically—suddenly perturbed. Fern followed it to a doorway, only to find a collapsed stairwell. Tapu Koko clacked its pincers in frustration. “I’m not sure what you were looking for, but I think going up is out of the question.”

21 visit the lesser megalo tower and its first floor. there are no staircases to the upper floors, just an malfunctioning elevator. there are doors to empty custodial rooms, offices, and makeshift living quarters that may or may not contain threats inside.

Fern tilted his head as he looked up at Tapu Koko, brow lifting as he gestures in Zev’s direction. “Think you can do what he suggested?” In all honesty, usually the deity was more inclined to take requests from others rather than Fern – purely for the sake of being a contrarian little shit.[break][break]
But its cagey nature shifted away from being directed at Fern whenever they returned here. Instead, it was directed at the place itself, though he’d never been sure if it was because Tapu Koko wanted him to find something, or because it was just that eager to leave again.[break][break]
In any case, the island spirit complied with the request without any fuss—which felt strange, but Fern followed as it began to drift out in the vague direction of the police station.[break][break]
“Have you encountered any of the others?” Fern asked of the beast as they picked their way around scattered debris in their path. Curiously, he wondered if Tapu Koko would show interest in the subject of its Tapu siblings[break][break]
But it did not so much as glance back.

Only that it wished to leave Lesser Megalopolis, and now here it was.[break][break]
“They are,” Fern agreed as they eyed Tapu Koko and its continued study of Fini. “Fickle as can be.” They did not admit to the fact that they found a certain degree of kinship in that particular trait.[break][break]
But what was the end goal? For either of them? Would being bound to such finicky beings ever spell out anything, but trouble? It was a gamble they had taken in agreeing to allow it to convey its power on them. And a gamble they were still playing out.[break][break]
Their head tilted in curious observation at the offered hand. It felt like no small thing to be offered a bond of secrecy from the likes of Elisabeth. It would be beneficial, they reasoned, until they felt it was the right time to let the rest of the upper brass in on their new little bond with their patron.[break][break]
And useful ammunition, should they ever feel the need to force her hand. Though they certainly hoped it never came to that.[break][break]
“Likewise,” Fern assured as their hand clasped hers. It was always good to keep a trick card in one’s sleeve, after all. “I’m glad we agree.”

So getting to the party on time hadn’t quite gone as smoothly as intended. It was all well and good until the time came to put the sweater on the sableye. And really perhaps they should have just given up, but Fern was committed to the cause and stubbornly found themself determined to get the ugly turtleneck on Sidhe if it was the last thing they did.[break][break]

But they’ve never had an issue with being fashionably late.[break][break]

Texts flooded their phone, unresponded to as they engaged in a game of catch with the little gremlin. It wasn’t until they held her aloft, perfectly sweatered as she tried to gnaw off their hand that they noticed their phone ding again.[break][break]

A nervous hum filters through them as they jump to the worry that there’s an issue with , but are far more relieved when it turns out to be trying to figure out where they are.[break][break]

All is well and good…until they get to the last one with the photo attached. What the what??[break][break]

They hadn’t really planned to teleport into the casino so abruptly, but, well…desperate times. Fern all but evaporates from their living room, an annoyed sableye under an arm. Thank goodness they’d sent their gift along earlier. In what might be a startling move, they reappear in the midst of the party— practically out of nowhere. Right near Mint’s booth.[break][break]

One moment empty space, and then they are filling it with static clinging to their clothing and floating through loose strands of hair.[break][break]

Sidhe worms her way loose of Fern’s grasp and plops sullenly on the floor, rendered immobile by the knit sweater she couldn’t wrangle off. But Fern is too busy whirling toward the dj booth, phone screen held aloft as they point at it with their other hand.[break][break]

A voice lifting with a note of high drama, they look up at . “‘Scuse me, what is this??”[break][break]

They look over their shoulder, into the crowd, to see if they can spy where hunkered down. “I get held up but one sableye, and there’s shenanigans??”[break][break]

Unable to immediately find him, they grab a miscellaneous drink off the first passing tray and then inch closer to the booth as they eye their friend again. “Who else smoochin’ though?”

Their own tether to Lesser Megalopolis was a strange one–a draw that beckoned them to return. The pull had always been there, even before their link to the Tapu Koko of this world. It all started with that shard, the same one they had to wrestle from the island deity earlier just to carry it in their pocket now.[break][break]

Tapu Koko eyed traveling companion warily, perhaps because it sensed the oddity of Necrozma connected with Zev. But Fern was too preoccupied with answering the beast’s questions. Tapu Koko was an overly suspicious pigeon, anyway. Prone to bouts of ridiculous paranoia.[break][break]

Of course, Fern was willfully overlooking their own similar disposition, and their nettling thoughts regarding Kanto and during their meeting in the Cave of Origin. It’s not relevant, after all! They were nothing alike, he and this creature.[break][break]

And yet they were everything alike. Whether Fern cared to admit this to themself or not (they did not.)[break][break]

“Sporadically, and poorly, I’m afraid,” they admitted with a forlorn sigh. “I try to make visits when possible, but until more recent reports, I wasn’t even aware the other Tapus were here.” Usually they just followed Tapu Koko, but it never led them anywhere significant. The two of them, equally as lost.[break][break]

But Fern didn’t necessarily think that was intentional on their patron’s part, either.[break][break]

If the other Tapus had spurned it, it would certainly explain the curiosity it had displayed with Tapu Fini some months ago, when they’d encountered . The curiosity, and that strange sort of longing. “Maybe they have their own turfs.” Fern shrugged. “I met it at the rundown police station on the..” Fern’s face screwed up in thought. “..the east side. But I’m fairly certain it was following me before that.”

Fern still fails to grasp the rhyme or reason to the order that the machine chooses. To them, there is no real connection from one scene to the next. Not that they have the time to sort such a thing out or make too much sense of it when massive dragons materialize in the space before them.[break][break]

A low, admiring whistle slips from their mouth as they look up at the imposing forms of zekrom and reshiram. Wind ripples through their clothes as they lean toward the edge of the stone tower from so high up.[break][break]

Their head tilts as they regard the robed men, a hand reaching sideways for Jayden’s sleeve. But they find themself in agreement at his quick decision. “Yes, the truth is nothing without ideals.”[break][break]

They wince as the two dragons clash, uncertain of how it’ll end.

A knock on their door pulls Fern from the distracted daze they’d slipped into. They’d been reading over a very interesting new report. And by interesting, they meant very boring. All financial humdrum. Budgets, blah blah blah.[break][break]

“Come in!” Their head snaps up abruptly, static electricity pulls at the strands of flyaway hair, as if someone had been rubbing a balloon against their head.[break][break]

But it is just a byproduct of the energy that runs under their skin now.[break][break]

In the corner, Tapu Koko is startled from its task of pulling everything off of Fern’s bookshelf. Fern rolls their eyes, but gifts Temp a smile. “Always a pleasure to see you, Quinn.”

  • 1. rt: chaos for chaos' sake[break]
    Throughout the duration of the conflict, a variety of League members, and some fellow Rockets, would have seen a masked figure alongside their patron, Shiny Tapu Koko. Though it wasn’t initially revealed to be the admin, their encounters were marked by a distinct sense of playful malice and causing problems for the sake of it. Though there have been glimpses of this behavior during Post-Dormitum, these skirmishes marked a clear emergence of a wilier, more openly antagonistic side of them.[break][break]
    Despite their concern and desire to reconnect with , who they had been separated from during the conflict, they fully embraced their position as a problem causer, and they openly flaunted their avatar powers. Often, Fern engaged without much provocation, and was seen to actively delight in causing harm and distress to those who came up against them. This is especially prominent in their battles with and —wherein Fern disregarded the safety both pokemon and persons beyond the typical parameters of battle.[break][break]
    This marks a pointed departure from their uncertainty in physical confrontation during the events of PAAA, and their wariness in causing permanent harm or loss. Rather than their typical preference to wiggle loose from tight corners, they have pushed themself to the point of arrogant confidence, flaunting their abilities with the sort of panache that was typical of them, but far more conniving and coy, previously.[break][break]
    Culminating in a reconnection with both and in separate encounters, Fern’s face is revealed in both instances as the fighting comes to a head. A sense of retribution was sought with Matias, as Fern openly showed themself so that they could revel in the upper hand they maintained after being subjected to Matias’ own arrogance during their prior battle during PD. Aided by during their showdown with , they set aside some personal feelings toward a fellow dragon-aficionado to, once again, wholeheartedly accept their commitment to pulling the league’s metaphorical pigtails. The feeling of lost potential camaraderie lingers – perhaps in another life, yes? (In a prior encounter with , a kinder, more sympathetic side of them shows itself as they set aside their position for a short while - though the councilwoman remained unaware of their knowledge of her.)[break][break]
    Now, due to their lack of subtlety, Fern is actively known to the league as an active Rocket avatar, though under the alias, Harper Beck.— opening the door for more active pursuit of mischief making. [break][break]

  • 2. where do you come from, where do you go?[break]
    As they adjust to their connection to Tapu Koko, Fern continues to have their sense of autonomy thrown into imbalance. Following the events of Disseminate II and their paranoia toward the higher stations within Rocket, they have been left to wonder if that was simply the doing of the berserk influence of and chien-pao, or they have simply been less inclined to disguise their skepticism of their own volition.[break][break]
    As their nature grows more erratic, glimmers of their calming and softer nature shines through. Exceptionally so in their interactions with directly after Disseminate II, and during their initial arrival during RT - acting as a balm to the other avatar's own instability. However, after a particularly harrowing loss of control within the thick of Interdream Mist, Fern is left to wrestle with their worst fears and their disdain for that lack of control.[break][break]
    Ultimately, they forge a greater trust for Tapu Koko’s continued presence, even as they continue to treat each other with a push and pull dynamic as they egg one another on. Their muddied sense of self becomes entangled with Tapu Koko’s—something that has been shown in bits and pieces. The deity’s fascination upon meeting Hoenn’s Tapu Fini, and then unmistakable sense of listlessness aids to its own sense of uncertainty in itself. While repelled by a mutual desire for distinction, Fern and Tapu Koko pull together and mirror one another:[break][break]
    In nature, in stubbornness and pride, in a desire to figure out who each of them are, and where their footing is meant to fall.[break][break]
    As a result, there is a push to pursue more examination into where Tapu Koko has come from, and if its being within this Hoenn will cause problems. More pursuits into Lesser Megalopolis alongside (and hopefully others to come,) as well as an interview with look to shed light on what exactly this bond is, what it can endure, and how it will continue to influence—for better, or for worse.[break][break]
    Which part of Fern is the real one, and who is The Charlatan? Is it only a result of Tapu Koko’s mercurial influence, or have these pieces of Fern been there all along?

  • 1. AVATARSHIP: ✨ SHINY TAPU KOKO[break]
    The name of the game is being a scourge! As Fern’s avatarship continues, and their continued relationship and bond oscillates between repellant and co-dependent, the manifestation of Fern’s behavior has become making just about anything and everything a problem. At least as far as the league is concerned, as highlighted above in first plot about Resurfaced Treasure. However, this has also cropped up as well in their uncertainties about leadership during Disseminate II, and their willingness to agree to a deal of mutual secrecy with regarding Tapu Koko and Tapu Fini—but only as long as that silence benefitted them. Though they ultimately found no need to reveal the underboss’ cards for her, the thought was still there.[break][break]
    Thus pinning Fern as a marked table-flipper as they deem fit. Their allegiance remains to themself, and now as a result of their tether, Tapu Koko as well.[break][break]
    As Fern delves into a sort of Lokian stage in nature and action, the opportunity is now opened up for more conflict and unrest to be bred as they actively move forward to antagonize the upper brass of the League (starting with AQUA tapu koko? Hehe? Jk…unless?? :eyes: stay tuned.) And in turn, as they struggle with the duality in their fickle moods, and desire to maintain independence, they will continue to look to their fellow Rockets for assistance in uncovering the origination of their alt-world patron. So long as this help favors Fern and their goals, of course. I mean, for the glory of Rocket...haha.

“Well then, you can be glad, at least, that it was an honorable end,” they reply with a lift of one shoulder. Though they would not be so gracious to sit with a loss. There’s a faint recollection of Mt. Pyre. How they’d nearly lost their dearest companion, how Cecilia had come back to them then.[break][break]

There is no way to describe the lengths they would go to, to rip and tear and break the world as they saw fit if they were to lose their dragon again.[break][break]

The blue of their eyes remains placid, however. Their smile, something serene. This is not their loss, and so they do not grieve it, even if they feel an odd degree of empathy. Odd, because it is her. Odd, because they know she understands the intrinsic nature of it the way they do.[break][break]

If only because they have taken from her too, even if she does not realize this.[break][break]

A silent ah greets the dragapult, the dreepy they’ve claimed hovering close as understanding sinks in. But the creature concedes to her gesture without a bid to have its kin return to it, and Fern is grateful.[break][break]
