“You’re popular today,” Fern chirps at Tapu Koko as the leaguer watches them. But of course, this is to be expected–it’s their patron’s first official outing in a way that has made it visible to those outside of Rocket high ranks. And the unexpectedness of it is something that Fern delights in, and takes advantage of when able.[break][break]
The insult causes them to grin wildly as they return the gesture, both hands lifting off the back of their dragapult to do so. “No, you!” they chirp back, unbothered by the bark of the man’s voice.[break][break]
The blast of flame sends their dragapult flying backward, gliding through the air without the force resistance of wings to hinder them. Still, they think that they feel the lick of flame singing the ends of their hair. Weather-proof as they have become, they are certainly not inflammable.[break][break]
Fern grits their teeth and looks to Tapu Koko, who takes aim at the charizard, prepared to unleash the ELECTRO BALL at it, until the feral shriek of a Roaring Moon cuts into their conflict. SCALE SHOTS pepper Ceci’s flank and she drops out of the way, though doesn’t succumb the same as the charizard.[break][break]
The island deity whirls around, affronted at being interrupted and sends its attack at the paradox before hurtling after Fern as they try to put space between themself and the encroaching mist. Where the leaguer goes, they don’t rightly care. Maybe he made peace with the ground and ate shit after all.

The dreepy find impact and bite down with nettling force—far worse than the nibble of friendly fish in a wading pool. But it is a success that is short lived as their swoobat is taken off the map.[break][break]
Fern grimaces as the yanma practically implodes with ancient power. Though the swoobat’s bite landed true, it cannot withstand the force of the last ditch attack before its swells and expands outward with the blast. Bits of matter and fur fly outward, in a splat that makes no impact because there is only air to meet it.[break][break]
Cecilia meanwhile, dips in the air, more winded by the hit of the other dragon’s tail than she had let on. Her attack is enough to pull the leaguer off of them, though, and Fern exhales a breath as they peel away from the dragapult.[break][break]
They do not give chase to the ranger as he retreats. After all, this had been no more than a distraction from their task in the first place. Reorienting themself as the dreepy darts return, Fern directs Cecilia back in the direction they’d been headed—though now with the caveat of finding a quiet spot to land and regroup before proceeding.

The electrocution never strikes. Before the lightning can swarm Matias, he is saved by the hulking form of his Charizard. Whatever gratification comes from seeing him turn tail and flee is then dampened.[break][break]
“Tt, how disappointing,” they sigh as they shift to recall the grapploct that had been valiantly fighting against the cloyster. Only nothing comes back to the summons of the pokeball. It is not until Fern sees it floating on the water nearby—equally as toasted by the electricity that surged the water, that Fern connects the dots.[break][break]
“Oh.” They shrug, and toss the useless ball away. Unbothered. Such is the risk that comes with their abilities. Next time, they’ll be smarter about it.[break][break]
Or will they?[break][break]
For now, they simply ascend and resume their flight. A part of them considers pursuit, because they would’ve very much liked to have continued their taunts. But in the end they forego it, figuring that it will simply be fate if they manage to encounter him again later.

He expects the drop that comes, because when Tapu Koko enacts its judgement, it has not held back thus far. It is somewhat impressive, though, that her pokemon do remain steadfast and do not flee in the wake of something stronger.[break][break]
But then again, she’s proven herself capable of pulling herself up by the bootstraps too, hasn’t she?[break][break]
Fern laughs, head tipping back as she does her best to defy whatever expectations she seems to think he has. “Sure you did,” he drawls in turn, observing as she falls unconscious on the spot. Sure, she stayed on her feet, but she was subdued all the same.[break][break]
To Fern—does this really make a difference? He is still able to pass by. He still wins.[break][break]
Sidhe skitters back to him, winded as the mega evolution fades to her smaller, natural state. She claws her way up his leg until he recalls her to her pokeball and summons his dragapult instead.[break][break]
Tapu Koko, having done its part, lifts into the air and hovers there, looking down expectantly as it waits for fern to join it. “Coming, coming,” he sighs, sliding onto the spectral dragon’s back. Then they lift off and move away from the seaside battle, still searching for any sign of ice or familiarity. Something that will lead them back to jayden cross’s side.

“I think you have our agenda’s mixed up,” Fern calls back, unaware of the fact that this is the guy that gave them that littering violation ages ago. Not that it matters—if anything it would give Fern amplification from the petty grudge. “Tit for tat,” they say in simple observation as they watch the emolga drop out of the sky.[break][break]
If they were meant to be intimidated by the display, they are not. Formidable as it is, what are some crystallized sparkles compared to that of a deity? Fire conflagrates in the air and traps them in place, but Fern only looks upward with a sharp grin. As lashes of lightning acknowledge their call, Tapu Koko soon descends—joining Fern in pursuit as they dive on their dragapult, following the involuntary descent of the man on his Charizard.[break][break]
An ELECTRO BALL is formed by the island spirit, but not fired just yet. “Break rank,” Fern calls out. “Yield.”

Fern’s goodra lumbered forward, tail uncurling and lashing out in a hefty power whip against the first pokemon he encountered. The effort pulled the zangoose off of its feet so that it fell back into the wash of flooded muck.[break][break]

“Best to always be prepared,” Fern chimed back, a short nod of approval following the shift of the charizard into a higher state of being. “Magnificent beast, that one.”[break][break]

Sidhe, meanwhile, continued to cackle and shriek in delight as she wrought her own havoc on the convoy. A blinding power gem angled at the mirrors on the truck to reflect and obscure the vision of those nearby, regardless as to whether they were Pokémon or person.[break][break]

Fern wasn’t simply content to fight from afar, though, eager as he’d been to be up close to the fighting the last few days. With a jerk of his head, he signaled his forward move—electricity crackling in his palms as he aimed to engage.

They do not have the time, nor the patience for this. Fern’s nose wrinkles in distaste as the emolga attempts to cut them off—the acrobatics display mostly pinging off of Cecilia’s larger body. Her maw opens wide, a FIRE BLAST taking care of what the overeager charizard had already started.[break][break]

The lick of heat from the actual threat ripples out toward them and their dragapult peels away from it. Only for her to loop back around so that Fern can look at the man on his dragon from behind their smiling, clever mask. “Haven’t you got better things to do than shoot bird’s from the air?” they call, “Get lost, I’m busy.”[break][break]

And eager to hail their patron from on high to zap them from the air if he doesn’t make like a tree and leave.

To see the man swing against empty air made Fern laugh. As though it were great comedy. Of course, Fern was smaller and far less durable. He’d endured his fair share of scrapes throughout his life but he was not about to go hand to hand here. Why should he have any need for that anyway?[break][break]

Granted, he could technically just shock stun the man into surrender.[break][break]

Tapu Koko, though, was having far too good of a time for Fern to cut things short. Though the DRACO METEORS that rained down certainly irritated his patron. It zipped amid the hunks of burning rock, but despite its speed, one clanged into an arm and sent it careening.[break][break]

Its’ response, emboldened by speed, was to conjure and even larger, faster ELECTRO BALL back the rampaging dragon.[break][break]

Fern’s hand moved to his pocket, quick on the draw as his Roaring Moon joined the field. Meraxes let out a warning call, low rumbling thread directed toward the tyrantrum. But Fern was more concerned with slipping up into the great beast’s back than leveling an immediate attack.[break][break]

At least not yet. Instead, the seafoam green Roaring Moon rose into the air above them, the wide sweeping movement of her DRAGON DANCE making the pair harder to follow.

If Tapu Koko is aware of Fern’s annoyance at its delay, it does not acknowledge as much. Instead, it watches the ranger curiously, though its eyes remain impassive. Maybe it can sense her connection to Alola—a home it should know. But this Tapu Koko has not been connected to its home land.[break][break]
At least as far as Fern is aware. When they think about it, they’re still not sure where it came from. If Lesser Megalopolis is truly its real home. Not that it matters right now. The way it continues to stare is not indicative of benevolence for the redhead.[break][break]
“Well,” he trills in response, arms thrown up in a dramatic shrug, “If you insist~” A laugh crawls up Fern’s throat, as they let electricity flow from them, reinforcing that ELECTRIC TERRAIN they had created earlier. Though the mega sableye grumbles a protest as a stray shock catches her leg, she does indeed scuttle forward—only to be blasted back by the MOONBLAST.[break][break]
A crack builds in her gem shield and she titters irritably, swinging the shield to the side as she conjures the dark energy of a SHADOW BALL that she soon chucks in the togekiss’ direction.[break][break]
It is clear, though, that she’s winded and annoyed—sending erratic attacks in the general direction of their opposition.[break][break]
Fern is not worried, however. Sidhe will retreat when she wishes to, and in any case, while her power might be dwindling the Tapu Koko is far from exhausted. Empowered by the terrain, Fern’s patron circles the ranger and her pair. Lighting cracks around it as it shakes its arms in a strange little war dance.[break][break]
The display all a dramatic little show before it lets loose a flare of DISCHARGE at all three.[break][break]

Fern grins again. "All the way." He echoes her words, equally as intent in his desire to see this through. He wants to cause that fear again. Wants to see her run.

Their hands plant on the floorboards and the feeling is slick and tacky. The blood that spatters throughout the room is dense and congealed and it coats their hands where they kneel. It feels fitting.[break][break]
This blood is on their hands.[break][break]
This is their fault.[break][break]
They should have come home sooner.[break][break]
They should have pulled da from Galar before now.[break][break]
Now it was—[break][break]
“Too late.”[break][break]
Their shoulders shudder as they wail the words back to Jayden.[break][break]
There is no finding him. They don’t care about the glowing mouth of the Iron Jugulis in the dark. The politoed that Jayden summons pushes back against it, short circuiting the gears in the creature’s wiring. But its open maw still continues to glow before a wild DRAGON PULSE shoots forward from the shadows.[break][break]
Fern should move, should pull themself together, should help. But they can’t rise from that spot with their dirty hands and dirty soul. The distress coagulates into energy, a building electricity that crackles around them erratically.[break][break]
But they’re not thinking or trying to summon it. It just comes.[break][break]
And with it, the worry of Tapu Koko, drawn through the mist after being separated from the pair.

“Ahhh, now there’s some fighting spirit.” This pleases Fern. As easy as it was to taunt her and cut her down, perhaps it is simply not quite as fun to batter back a sitting duck. Their smile sharpens, eyes gleaming behind the canid mask they wear. On the cusp of surrender, her hollowed-eyed countenance from before was a sore disappointment.[break][break]
This, however, they can work with.[break][break]
“Champion?” He barks out a laugh. “Isn’t that a bit trivial in the grand scheme of things?”[break][break]
Her words must be a helluva motivational talk, though, because it causes both of her pokemon to glow with evolutionary light. For a moment, Fern stills, as do his team. “Well, how about that,” they hum with curiosity. “Definitely a formidable sight, but will it be enough?” Fern calls out next, as they sweep a hand to usher his own forward to clash with the attacks that greet them.[break][break]
Sidhe cowers under the swipe of the ursaring’s claws, but she isn’t the sort to retreat. With another cackle, she pushes back after reeling from the brunt of the fairy-attack. She ducks behind the bulk of her shielding gem before retaliating with a ZEN HEADBUTT—jumping free to aim her noggin straight at the larger bear’s middle.[break][break]
Niskus is not so lucky. He lashes out with another swiping POISON TAIL, but the DOUBLE EDGE from the togekiss bowls the Hisuian goodra over and he topples. Despite an effort to stand again, his legs crumple under him and he collapses, only to disappear back into his pokeball.[break][break]
Fern tuts in disappointment. “Lucky strike,” he huffs before his glance turns upward again from the togekiss. “Perhaps you’d like a more terrible opponent, then?”[break][break]
It is spoken like an announcement, but no big reveal follows. Fern clears his throat and looks up. “A more terrible opponent?” he repeats, louder and more irritable.[break][break]
Only then does the shiny Tapu Koko descend from somewhere in the sky, dropping away from the shroud of gloomy clouds to eye the ranger and her team. “We need to work on your timing,” Fern grumbles at it. Tapu Koko ignores him, a curious clicking sound in its throat that is surely the precursor to some sort attack as it evaluates and builds energy.

It is good that they had the forethought to send the staraptor out ahead of them. It caws once, and then the impact of a speedy bullet stops it mid-flight as its chirping twists into a shriek of pain. Feathers erupt from its body and Fern doesn’t attempt to reclaim the felled bird as it begins to plummet.[break][break]
