“Westcliff,” Fern addressed the executive with a nod of his head. He had not formally worked with the aptly dubbed Mad Dog of Rocket, but he had to admit his curiosity.[break][break]
Regarding him casually, he leaned against the lithe body of his dragapult where she hovered alongside him, watching the other with narrowed, citrine eyes. But Fern did not acknowledge Cecilia’s demeanor.[break][break]
He was a stranger to her, it was only natural.[break][break]
“I assumed you’ve been briefed on our objective,” he continued, voice brusque as he slid his masked helm back into place. “The convoy’s drop point isn’t too far from here, so it won’t be much of a trek.”[break][break]
Somewhere above, Tapu Koko gif among the clouds. But sent a flashing pulse of lightning forking down to the island below. Fern glanced over at him again, the sharpness of his smile visible under the snout of his mask.[break][break]
“Let’s make this fun, though, yes? I’d hate to be perfunctory and bored, wouldn’t you?”

They aren’t sure what’s come over them. Just that it’s important and crucial that they get out of the tangle as quickly as they can.[break][break]
Their memory, their cognizance splinters. They are not on some desolate island shore near Dewford. There is only this.[break][break]
“Da,” they breathe, tugging his hand more insistently, though he’s obviously following as quickly as he can and not at all resisting Fern’s pull.[break][break]
They break through the treeline like it takes no time at all to get there. But Stow-on-Side doesn’t look right.[break][break]
Buildings are toppled and crumbling in the wake of the havoc Necrozma previously wrought on the region. Is this what they have been willfully missing in not coming back to insist their da leave?[break][break]
Is this what Fern left him to?[break][break]
The apothecarist shop where they grew up is still in the middle of town. The tree outside, though, is uprooted—its truck cleaving a crater in the middle of the shop proper’s roof. “Da!” they repeat, more insistently than the first.

A low hum reverberated under the admin’s mask as he stared down at the unconscious body of the ranger. Speculative, pitying. “A bit overkill, that,” he remarked dryly to Tapu Koko, who made no apologetic gesture for its final dose of NATURE’S MADNESS. It flitted around Fern and his mount, excessively watchful for any other perceived threat. “You didn’t need to obliterate the poor thing.”[break][break]
Granted, Fern didn’t sound too put out as he chided the deity—in fact, there was a tinge of amusement to his voice. Inexplicably fond of the creature bound to his being.[break][break]
His hand rose, staying any more action from Tapu Koko, or suggesting as much—because what control does Fern really enact over a god? None, of course. The pigeon rarely acquiesces to staying within the confines of a pokeball.[break][break]
They are tethered, and they vie for their own semblance of autonomy and power, but Fern is never for once so foolish as to think that he is the one on top. He is a ant, in comparison.[break][break]
But still chosen. Hand-picked by a force of nature, and that alone was enough to soothe the sting of his subdued ego. Of course, it would only be a small window of time passed before his fickle nature resumed the push and pull of his battle of wills with Tapu Koko. But for now, they are unified.[break][break]
Powerful.[break][break]
"Leave her." The electrical field around them simmers and then flickers out—lingering tendrils of lightning flashing across the sand before flashing away in sparks of light. “A still target isn’t any fun,” he remarked with a lamenting sigh, shoulders sagging. “Let’s go. They’ll find her like this, and hopefully that’ll be enough of a message sent.”[break][break]
With a pat to his dragapult’s head, they rose steadily into the air again. “Let’s find jayden cross now, yes?”

Their mindset shifts as rapidly as the world around them. Maybe the illusion is so great, that they simply just don’t have the time to register it as false. The Interdream Mist pulls them under the current, and there is no push back from Fern this time.[break][break]
Perhaps because it is the tide of their own mind, rather than the ghosts in jayden cross’s.[break][break]
They don’t know how they know that this isn’t the dream-like Ballonlea and Glimwood Tangle they lived out decades in, but they just do. It hums on a level deep in their bones, and they feel like a child again, but not. Like if they looked down at their hands, they would be smaller, softer. The ground wouldn’t be quite so far down.[break][break]
No, this is home. The real Galar.[break][break]
When means that they need to get through the tangle. Not to Ballonlea, but to the other side.[break][break]

Jayden’s words break them out of the sudden fog their mind seemed to slip into, and Fern blinks. The worry they’d been feeling returns, but their confusion and urgency remains.[break][break]
“We have to go I need to see him.” Their hand finds Jayden’s again, and then they’re trying to pull him through the dark, toward the break at the far end of the forest where there’s a pinprick of light.[break][break]

Toodles is a very posh thing to say, isn’t it? It makes sense–given Fern’s Galarian upbringing. Never mind the fact that any level of posh Galarian behavior has nothing to do with their childhood in the more casual, slang-heavy Stow-on-Side.[break][break]
It’s like everything else about them–a learned act.[break][break]
The BOOMBURST blasts the pair back with a soundwave that feels akin to being smacked with solid force, but Ceci is a practiced flier, and she flows with the motion, peeling away and firing a spray of noxious DRAGON BREATH in the flygon’s direction.[break][break]
Fern shrugs, “Beats reappearing in front of you again.” They could probably disappear into another PHANTOM FORCE, try the vantage of yet another angle. But something tells them that this guy would likely call whichever direction they came from ‘predictable.’[break][break]
The swoobat shrieks as the SONIC BOOM bursts around it, its ears far too sensitive for an attack at that decibel it hits. There is a ringing in the bat’s sonar ears, an addling in its head that skews the balance of its flight and its wings tilt its small, battered body at angle. But it persists, surging forward to collide head on with the yanma in an ASSURANCE that it will do the job Fern has tasked it with.[break][break]

An experiment in their joint abilities proved effective. Fern hadn’t been certain that the stun of the paralysis field, combined with NATURE’S MADNESS would be enough to fell the synced pair, but in the end–that was all they needed to do. With the flygon and her rider driven to the ground, Fern would say that it was a job well done. The objective was achieved and they could go back to their search for jayden cross in no time at all. He stared down at the green tangle that had made impact with the ground.[break][break]
And then she had to release yet another defender.[break][break]
Fern sighed, drifting down in the air so that he was closer to Shalin, but still above her. His head tilted to one side, the motion giving his canid mask an uncanny, stilted feel as he looked down at her. The glow of her sygna suit dimmed, and he was sure that she probably couldn’t hear the disappointed cluck of his tongue.[break][break]
“You really should learn to quit while you can.”[break][break]
Their attention shifted sideways to the Tapu Koko and they waved a hand idly. “This isn’t even all that fun anymore,” he complained to it. It was a pity, though, that she kept bringing out dragons. Fern bore no fondness for enacting this sort of wrath upon a grouping he was partial to.[break][break]
But that was a private thought, and this was not the time or place.[break][break]
“Do you yield?” He asked her then, peering down with curiosity as electricity continued to crackle around them. It wouldn’t matter what she said, not really. Tapu Koko’s pincer-like arms began to glow with the bright pink premonition of another wave of NATURE’S MADNESS. A storm simply brought down to earth.

Meraxes has to pull up sharply and bank hard to avoid the stone that rockets up into the air. The jagged rocks still manage to clip one crescent wing and she shrieks, the sound enraged and reverberating up into the air, through the sky and above the heavy layer of clouds. Too focused on the tactical shift, she does not retaliate, though this is alright.[break][break]
Fern–still true to that sense of dramatism, takes the opportunity to move again. Their body travels the current of electricity they produce. Move faster still when empowered by the ELECTRIC TERRAIN that does not harm them. And so they come to a stand still on the very precipice of the newly created STONE EDGE to peer down at Freya on the shore below.[break][break]
Lightning forks down again, tendrils cracking against the earth and splitting into skitting offshoots. Though they do not command the storm itself, they’ve summoned it, and that is power enough they decide. The anger wrought from the earth only belongs to it, after all.[break][break]
They only bear a portion of what it possesses.[break][break]
It being the presence that finally drops down to join them now. The muted oranges and blacks of the strange Tapu Koko do not lend to distinctiveness. The flashy familiarity of the island spirit that the League knows is lost on this one.[break][break]
What it lacks in vibrancy, however, it makes up for in the same sense of flair as its supplicant. “Took you long enough,” they trill at it, but its only response is to dart forward and let a pulse of DISCHARGED electricity thrum outward toward Freya and her dragon.
Protective, even if Fern would argue that they did not need protecting.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” they remark, and they find that they mean this—no matter what conflict has existed between them before. Here, they figure, is neutral ground. They respect Sky Pillar, and they will not pick a fight here.[break][break]
And honestly, today they are just a bit too tired to fight.[break][break]
Instead, it’s easier to sink into the familiarity that comes with the soft hiss of hiding dragons. The stirs of life in an ancient place.
Danu sets herself against a dhelmise that attempts to SLAM into them from the side. What would normally phase right through the spectre is made useful by the sylveon’s PIXELATION, and so the QUICK ATTACK lands with gusto.[break][break]
It too disappears within the confines of a pokeball.[break][break]
The choice to follow along comes simply, and a click of their tongue draws both the sylveon and newfound dreepy. “Do you find this place as peaceful as I do?” they ask with a degree of mild curiosity, eyes flitting over old gylphs carved into the stone as they ascend.

Static built in the darkening sky, and the slow rumble of thunder echoed at an overwhelmingly loud volume from their high altitude. Electricity crackled in the air and spread out around them to create a charged perimeter.[break][break]

fern can create ELECTRIC TERRAIN or an ordinary electrical field of reasonable size. those caught within the field are more liable to be shocked, revealed, and rendered with the PARALYSIS CONDITION.[break][break]

similarly, they can also summon isolated electrical storms.

Under the water’s surface, Fern’s grapploct finally finds the elite four’s cloyster. Tentacles stretched out in pursuit, it keeps the cloyster in its sights with determined persistence as it OCTOLOCKS onto its presence.[break][break]
A harsh bark of laughter echoes in the space between them.[break][break]
“I prefer to think it saw potential.”[break][break]
In truth, they still aren’t quite sure why the strange Tapu Koko selected them. For all they know, it was purely because of its interest in the primal shard they carried, even though it was useless by that point.[break][break]
Not that Matias needs to know this.[break][break]
“But pity or not, that doesn’t really change the fact that right now, it’s you’re problem to deal with.”[break][break]
It is then that Tapu Koko finally deigns to reveal its presence—emboldened by the ELECTRIC TERRAIN that Fern created, it releases a burst of DISCHARGE at both Matias and his gyarados.

They say ‘toodles,’ obviously. Else they would’ve chosen some other word. Fern makes no apologies or amendments for their dramatic flourish and odd manner of speaking.[break][break]
Because, of course, they are too busy avoiding any sort of capture.[break][break]
When the ranger reads their disappearing act, they puff out a sigh—forlorn. But not defeated![break][break]
“Well we can’t have that, can we?”[break][break]
They have tricks up their sleeve. But they aren’t about to use them immediately, it is best to wait for the right moment. Instead, they release their temporary hold on the swoobat and it flutters forward to take the gusty slash so that Fern and their dragapult can shift backward.[break][break]
In retaliation, a blast of PSYCHIC energy rips through the air toward the yanma.
