Flame meets torrent in a loud crash. The HYDRO PUMP cuts through the FLAMETHOWER and sets Meraxes back a pace as she shrieks with irritation. Steam rises in the air.[break][break]
They laugh, “I come by it honestly.” And this is true—Fern really has always borne a flair for the dramatic. “But a trick? This is not.” Rather than draw closer, they let their hands fall at either side and lift. The crackling static that builds there is mirrored overhead, and only overhead. The dark thunderheads that gather do not stretch along the length of the sore—a testament to the unnaturalness of it.[break][break]
When they take a step forward, that same electricity flares out across the sand in a wide radius.[break][break]

fern can create ELECTRIC TERRAIN or an ordinary electrical field of reasonable size. those caught within the field are more liable to be shocked, revealed, and rendered with the PARALYSIS CONDITION.[break][break]

similarly, they can also summon isolated electrical storms.

Now, they figure, would be an excellent time for their patron to make its appearance. But it is perhaps more theatrical than even Fern.[break][break]

They must make do. A low whistle draws Meraxes into movement. The Roaring Moon lifts from the ground, a stirring of crescent wings lifts her into the air. Her DRAGON DANCE picking up speed as she twists around spikes of violet-white lightening that being to fork down from air to earth like clawing fingers.

The safari ball clicks shut and Danu daintily snags in between her jaws before trotting back to Fern proudly. Curious, the new yamask observes the display between the two. Maybe out of a desire to mimic the shared fondness between Fern and the other Pokémon, it searches for a target of its own. An unwitting gimmighoul tottering by with its large coin in tow is bowled over by a dark SHADOW BALL. Without something to contain it, the yamask awkwardly juggles its mask and drags the lil guy back to a surprised Fern by the antennae.[break][break]

Fern rewards this act with an affectionate pat on the head for the pleased little ghost as the gimmighoul is also collected into a safari ball.

The deino they find tromping through the brush is much, much more interesting. But then again, any dragon is going to be favored by Fern. They are as beloved to them as ghost types are. In some moments, even more so. This particular deino is a bit feisty, though, so they take no chances. Sending out their sylveon, Danu springs forward to gift the little dragon with a DRAINING KISS before Fern follows with a safari ball.

The yamask turns out to be a friendly companion that sticks close to Fern's shoulder as they move through the safari zone. For a moment, they stop to observe a tarountula spinning an elaborate web, but eventually their interest in seeing what else there is to offer prompts them to carry onward.

They awaken to a hiss and the nervous chatter of two dragapult.[break][break]

Cecilia, slithered up along side their bed, hovers warily as she watches Medb from across the room. As Fern blinks away the remnants of their dreaming, the change becomes more apparent. What are they meant to make of this? Of the message that lights their phone on the bedside table?[break][break]

Another segue into slumber yields more perplexity. The room is vast and bright. Faceless avatars sprout like daises in various stages of waking. The design reminds them of silly games they play on their phone. Have they somehow been sucked into said device? It wouldn’t be the first time something so bizarre has occurred.[break][break]

A curious blink follows the pop-up, and Fern scans the question with what they think would be a tilt of the head. But who’s to say if this weird little avatar version mimicks the impulse. But in the end they refuse to leave with immediate ease. [NO.] is decisively tapped. Their intrigue outweighing all other airs of caution and concern.

He doesn’t remember.[break][break]
Fern’s chest caves in with the blow of it. He says yes, but they can tell. They know he doesn’t remember because he’s so obviously confused by what they hold, what it means. Something so simple and factual, a given in the same way that a heart pumps blood and beats for another person.[break][break]
Except it is not so innate, is it?[break][break]
Their fingers close hard around the chain and the rings that dangle from it. The bands are snapped up into the curl of their palm, hiding them away from view.[break][break]
“Oh, no,” their lungs feel as if they are airless as they shake their head, “no. It’s not different.”[break][break]
A lie, mostly. They do recall quite a lot. There are blurs and gaps, but there are things they remember. Important things.[break][break]
They look too stricken, they realize, and something flits across their face to shadow away the pain bright strickenness. A dazed, smile curls at the corners of their mouth, and in a swift movement, they pluck open the drawer of their nightstand and tuck the foolish keepsake away. Swallow down the watery emotion before they let out a resolute breath.[break][break]
“I’m alright, duck. Just exhausted, that’s all.” The mug of tea cools on the top of the nightstand. But they slide under the weight of familiar old blankets without rushing to drink it down. Absently, they pat the other side for him to join them.[break][break]

Fern is confident in their beliefs. Unwavering in the choice they have made. There is not another one that they could fathom, and there is no deviation from what is already being built from the foundation upward to the Galarian skies. He is the one chosen by a people they know little of.[break][break]
And believe it to be the best decision made.[break][break]
As much as they believe in their own decision to follow jayden cross with the devotion of a lovelorn yamper. They will find no disappointment here. He is their’s. And they trust their instinct.[break][break]
Finally, he seems to relax–much to their satisfaction.[break][break]
They hum contentedly, obviously preening from the affirmation. It’s almost more of a silky purr, lazy and languorous. “I do so love it when you flatter me so nicely, dearest.”[break][break]
There is a tumult in their chest as they maneuver them with such apparent ease–the burst of blooming spring flora, the rapid beat of a thousand, velvety butterfree wings. Knees hug his waist, the slide of soft blankets pooling around their own hips.[break][break]
Hands slide over his chest to find his face as they crane over him, meeting the comforting warmth of his mouth halfway.[break][break]
“I will always be here to bolster you.” The glow in their gaze is fervent with adoration. Bright blue in the soft dark. They close the gap again with another murmured, “Always.”

There is time yet to follow the rest into the mayhem that has swallowed the time here on this island. Time yet to fall prey to the wild fever of battle and its revelry.[break][break]
Here, in the shroud of blooming pink mist, they rest. And bide their time.[break][break]
Fern looks at him, worry lines creasing between their furrowed brows. “Oh duck,” they reply with a quiet, slightly exasperated sigh, “how can I not worry?” It is an affectionate sort of exasperation that pulls the syllables into a quiet lilt.[break][break]
Lily-soft and tender.[break][break]
No matter the situation or the urgency, they are this: gentle and fretting when there is no one else to look in.[break][break]
And perhaps it is because they are so impossibly pliant that the mist takes root in uncanny ways. With more ease than someone as internally guarded as Fern might belie.[break][break]
Around them, the interdream mist builds a world that is familiar, but unfamiliar to this place in time. Darkening the space around them, save for the fluorescent luminescence of glowing, plump mushrooms.

The dreepy trilled as they found purchase, irritated that they connected with the security of a shield rather than the hide of the Pokémon carrying the green-haired ranger. Peeling away, the dragon young returned to their caregiver and tucked within the safety of her horns once again.[break][break]
But that didn’t mean Fern was done with the hunt, of course.[break][break]
Bound by the tether that resonated between them, Tapu Koko followed the line back down to Fern. It zipped around their acolyte, darting movement difficult to follow at that windy altitude. “Have you come to play too?” he asked of it, and its only response was the zip and twist of its body as it rocketed up above Fern to snap its shielded arms together as the beedrill plunged downward.[break][break]
The power packed into its stinger would collide against the sharp orange and black of the avian head the shield created—only splitting apart as Tapu Koko broke away, the BRAVE BIRD swinging sharply at the underside of the hornet’s thorax.[break][break]
The patron cast a baleful look down at its supplicant, as if to say get moving. Fern only grinned wildly up in return. They were a divisive pair, their tactics clashing as much as they came together with synchronicity.

Only for the trio to reappear at a distance behind the man on his flygon. Fern laughs, the sound drifting over the wind. Then their hand lifts to eye level close to the lupine mask they don, fingers wiggling in a coquettish wave.
