“You know, I think I’ll be boss one day.” They said this casually one night, lounging comfortably in bed and sidled up to jayden cross comfortably. Their fingers drifting idly along the line of the other’s arm, eyes studying the movement.[break][break]
It was stated with such simple confidence, how could it not be eventual fact? And the moment was so strangely familiar and comfortable, how could Fern not confide such a thing?[break][break]
Their confidence extended to the other as well. “Wouldn’t that be something? Bosses linking their regional domains?” Their goals are always lofty ones, so why should their ultimate aspirations be any different?[break][break]
For right now, though, they sat comfortably in their position. There was time yet to obtain their desires and allow their plans to come to fruition. There were other nights for scheming and building overly complex, elaborate ploys.[break][break]
In that moment, they chose to enjoy play as they sank closer to the familiar warmth of the man they’ve only ever called Mischa. Duck. Their good heart. Again, they recognized that unmistakable wealth of the soul.[break][break]
Something that could not be obtained by their typical, conniving methods. Something rare and pure despite their stained hands that they would never find elsewhere. Their smirk was coy and playful as Fern allowed themself to fall inward and over him.[break][break]
The world was theirs to command, but their world was right there, warm and bright and alive under their hands. In that moment, they decided that they might actually have everything.[break][break]
And they never need have gone to Hoenn at all.

Fern tuts at each response, inflated ego stinging just a bit. Of course, perhaps they should have figured the likes of Matias would be too thick-skilled to have any sense of recollection or object permanence.[break][break]

“What was that?” They trill as they circle him, keeping a careful distance and finally emerging from hiding. “I couldn’t quite hear you.”[break][break]

A lie.[break][break]

The damage to their ear is one they’ve learned to navigate. All this time, they’ve kept their good side angled toward him.[break][break]

“No need for this, I figure.” He’s seen their face, so what does it matter? Their fox mask is pushed to rest atop their head. It’s all sharp, jackal smile underneath. They are not quite the same as they were the last time. Electricity crackles around them, no assistance from an electrical Pokémon to be seen.

The dreary weather is not something that is bound to dispel Fern from their wandering. When they find themself drawn here, they simply go. With little question to the matter. And a little bit of drizzle and fog is nothing to grow sullen over.[break][break]
“It would seem so. All the better for us, I would say,” they say, light and airy and wholly unbothered.[break][break]
Danu trills gently as her ribbon-like tendrils twist neatly about her like a purrloin curling its delicate tail. Ever the polite sort–even in the presence of her natural opposite. She makes no warnings to the dratini, and only sits calmly by Fern’s heels. Waiting.[break][break]
“Ah, but she is adorable,” they reply with a fond smile as they study the pale pink hue of the dratini and her enthusiastic effort to contain the fluttering swablu. “And there is time yet to learn–”[break][break]
Behind you.[break][break]
Fern turns with a curious hum, and is delighted by the sheepish creep of a small dreepy. Rather than dispatch Danu to subdue it, they open their hands to it– palms up in gentle invitation. Better to approach them sweetly, lest it be scared away.[break][break]
“I have a lonely drakloak who might like you,” they coo to it as it twirls around their fingers. For a moment entirely distracted from their impromptu company as the slyveon blinks wide, blithe eyes at Freya in lieu of Fern’s attention.

A pesky zubat begins to follow after them as well. Fern is less interested in it, but still dispatches his new friend for assistance. “Will you distract it for me?” he asks as he tries to swat the zubat away from getting caught in his hair. While the yamask blows it gently back with an ominous wind, Fern tosses a pokeball to let the creature be caught.

“What of the rest of Rocket’s upper brass, though?” they ask, the hitch of their smile growing wider as they strive to piece together her thoughts and motives. Her need to keep quiet. “Are the rest not suited for this particular knowledge? Surely it would be a boon if utilized properly under the correct circumstances.”[break][break]
They observe the Tapu Fini coolly– a flicker of interest glinting through the pale seafoam of their eyes before dissipating. There is a flash of teeth, all cheshire-like coyness. “Unless you deem the rest of the lot unworthy of knowing your cards?” They can understand the desire to be an island unto oneself.[break][break]
They are not unlike in this ideal. Fern has always been autonomous–long before they were ever tied with Rocket. Before they ever climbed within the ranking– they maintained their own dealings and enterprise. A one man show.[break][break]
It was all that was necessary.[break][break]
Still, though, it is scintillating to see an underboss hold such knowledge without divulging to any of the others. Even in confidential reports.[break][break]
They tut playfully, their words a chiding coo. “Whatever would our fearless, noble leader think if he discovered this?” Their hand gesticulates in lazy turns, rotating at the wrist as they spin their thoughts. Fingers curling inward to examine their nailbeds until their glance flits up to her again. “Unless at least Walsh knows?”[break][break]
“Well, I suppose the report simply has not been sent yet,” one shoulder rises and falls with a simple shrug, unbothered. “Only for those who need know, of course. I find it…distasteful to announce something without a clearer picture of what purpose it will serve. Or why it has tethered itself to me in the first place.”[break][break]
It is something they don’t understand. Something a piece of them still resents. “I wish to know why it is here. I am just…biding my time for a moment.” Why them? Though they suppose it may be no more than a case of like calling to like.[break][break]
It certainly is a strange bird.[break][break]

Idly, they watch as Tapu Koko studies Tapu Fini. Like a petulant younger sibling, it chases the darting movements of the prod from the elder. Regardless of what world it comes from, it is consistent even in its petulance. Where Fini is composed, it is frustrated.[break][break]
It draws closer, but it is not calm in the way it does not attack. In fact, electricity crawls over its shielded pincer-like arms. At the ready, should it be necessary.[break][break]

They flock to him, the little ghosts. They always have. Ever since Fern was a boy in Glimwood Tangle, making friends with shadows and the translucent shapes of the creatures who inhabited the dark forest. So it’s of no great surprise that their friendly call manages to ear attention, even if most might think the ghosts to stay away. He smiles as a small yamask holds out its mask in his direction, and Fern smiles broadly as if greeting someone new, or maybe a long lost friend. “Hello there! Would you like to come along on my walk?”

“oh little ghoooosts,” Fern trills as they wander through the safari zone at dusk. “Come out, come out wherever you areeee.” It’s not as simple as traversing Mt. Pyre, but they have heard that the area is particular populace with their spectral friends at this particular time. So they wander and they wait for full dark and any encounter they might come across.

Time stretched and shifted as it was want to do.[break][break]
Fern didn’t waste the years away, though. Of course they didn’t. They crawled and clawed their way up the scaffolds and rungs. They had schemed and conspired and strategized, and overall played a very fine game of ambitious chess, if they did say themself.[break][break]
One of the Galarian underboss seats now held their name. An overseer of the expansive network of counterfeit currency and the lines of the black market that spider-webbed throughout the region. They pulled the strings on it all. Led the charge on expansion into the import and export of particular goods with other regions.[break][break]
But naturally, it wasn’t enough. Not just yet.[break][break]
It wasn’t enough until they stepped off the plane in Viridian City.[break][break]
Until they were ushered across the scenery of Kanto to the hub of Rocket’s operations.[break][break]
Until their eyes met with familiar violet, and their breath snagged in that old, uncanny way.[break][break]
“Mischa.” The name was no more than an exhaled whisper, murmured under the formality of the meeting they were shuffled into. The upper echelons from varied regions all gathered into one space for a regional update.[break][break]
They were forced into a succinct and formal nod. “Underboss Cross.”[break][break]
There was more they wished to say. You look well or I’ve finally reached you. Things that the varied letters they’d once exchanged wouldn’t do true justice for.[break][break]
A flame they’d thought would flicker out over time hadn’t diminished. It burns bright in the true reunion that came later—the after party to the after party. Hushed words and heated embrace.[break][break]
At one time, they’d thought maybe they were foolish for carrying a torch for someone a world away. They didn’t regret it now, though.[break][break]
Not for a moment.

As it would turn out, they needn’t have worried about the reveal of their mother’s affiliation after all. Fern was, in a funny moment of confessions and previously unspoken truths, not the only one with blood ties to Rocket. Though jayden cross’s family seemed to have much further of a reach than simply that of Galar alone.[break][break]
Not that that bothered Fern all too much. They were quite happy on native soil, and just as content to fall into place when it seemed that they had potential among the ranks.[break][break]
A choice offered, and a choice made.[break][break]
Unlike their friend (more than friend? They would certainlm determine their feelings as more than just a smidge of warm fondness,) their mam did not enlist them without leaving it to Fern’s discretion.[break][break]
They appreciated the autonomy to decide for themself, though it took very little deliberation in the end.[break][break]
That was, they supposed, the liberty of having a foot in both worlds, because bless their da, he was not the sort to be among the ranks. Wouldn’t stand a chance beyond playing the occasional medic.[break][break]
But he would play doctor for anyone who needed it, so that didn’t quite count, did it?[break][break]
When they were still teens, though, their friend left the tangle. Kanto, he’d said. And so their time with Mischa became a severed end. One they badly wished to re-tie.[break][break]
There were ways to accomplish that. Both for their own gain, as well as to sate their own budding ambition.[break][break]
They had always been a troublemaker. Bearing as much of a wild streak as much as they had eccentricity. More than that— this was their birthright.[break][break]
They operated best on home soil, trolling through the Galarian streets to seize on opportunities that sprouted around them like ill-begotten daisies.[break][break]
Wyndon was loud, but teeming with dissent. They would rise. They would surpass their mother, because the Rocket ladder was theirs to ascend. And then they could do as they pleased, and go wherever they wished.[break][break]
Particularly wherever it was that Mischa might’ve gone.[break][break]
It was just an added bonus if they took over running the show and calling the shots along the way.

[In the funny way that dreams worked, by the time they made their way out of the tangle and stepped down the winding path that led home, they had grown older.[break][break]
Not a thing to be questioned. A natural occurrence that they didn’t blink twice at. Not quite youth anymore, but not quite an adult yet, either.[break][break]
A teenaged Fern stopped at the door to awkwardly balance from one foot to another as he tried to pull his complicated boots off.[break][break]
Their mam would kill them if they tracked mud in from the tangle, and they wouldn’t hear the end of it—[break][break]
Their mam.[break][break]
Something nostalgic tugged at their heart as the word floated through their mind. The scent of freshly cooked stew wafted through the hall of the small cottage attached to his da’s apothecary.[break][break]
It wasn’t that they’d been any less of a family with just the two of them (again, how does Fern have the sense that this was ever the case?)[break][break]
It was simply that Fern couldn’t recall the last time they’d smelled the particular spices she used, or heard the nagging, but affectionate lilt of her voice. That Galarian accent heavier and more rough spun.[break][break]

It was, admittedly, a smidge boring as they swept down the shoreline - scattering little league trainers with sweeps of crackling NATURE'S MADNESS that crawled across the sand in Tapu Koko's wake.[break][break]
"You're stealing all the fun," Fern sighed forlornly to their patron - something the island spirit pointedly ignored in its good time. A hand darted out, though, stilling them both as a shout ahead echoed down the beach. "What's this?" They cut a glance at the overgrown pigeon. "Sounds like a good time."[break][break]
Hook, line, and sinker, huh?[break][break]
Fern is drawn to the source like a venomoth to flame. Hand lifting in dramatic flourish as the other cups the side of their mouth where it is just visible under their mask. "Yooohoo! Over here!"[break][break]
No sooner would he look their way, fern would signal Tapu Koko into motion - the charged, flickering mass of an ELECTRO BALL hurtling Kazimir Wynter's way.

Saddled on the back of their dragapult is a familiar comfort for Fern. Cecilia is their most trusted companion, and so it is obvious that Fern would select her to enter the fray upon. It is not a fight they are looking for at the moment, though.[break][break]
Of course, they will welcome the chaos all the same if it comes their way. No, they are searching for jayden cross, having unintentionally split apart from the other admin in the thick of the conflict. An aerial provides insight - or they hoped it would. Somewhere higher still, Fern knows Tapu Koko is flitting about, the admin's agitation shared by their patron.[break][break]
Rocket ground yields no success, but before Fern can turn to look beyond enemy lines, a flash of green diverts their attention. "Look at what we've found, darling," they coo to the dragapult, hand sliding across the top of her head in silent command. The spectral dragon trills and fires a warning shot at the oncoming ranger - the projectile of smaller dreepy rocketing like missiles to their quarry. (DRAGON DARTS)

They aren't aware of jayden cross's location. Separated by the outbreak of battle, they were eventually wedged apart and Fern has been unable to find him since. It's a worry that silently gnaws at their stomach, but their outward demeanor doesn't betray this.[break][break]
After all, they have always been a proficient, adept actor.[break][break]
What are the thoughts that crawl through freya morningstar's mind as she nears them? What takes root and grows warped and cluttered in the spaces available? The same nagging worries? Fears of what was said outweighing what wasn't? Perhaps they were alike in this too, but Fern doesn't care to assess the ache of familiarity as a sharp bark of jackal laughter rises in their throat. "Long time, no see, Ms. Morningstar."[break][break]
They give her a mocking now with a sweeping flourish of their hands.[break][break]
It is, of course, their encounter in the deep sea Fern refers to. The pierce of ice shards through the delicate body of a dragalge. Not their more recent meeting - neutral on shared ground, softened by a lack of masks and a shared fondness for the dragons that bellow and huff beside them.[break][break]
A forked tongue darts from Meraxes' wide maw, a rumble of warning croaking in the base of her throat.[break][break]
"No," they reply airily to her command as they fixate on adjusting one of their gloves with idle fastidiousness. "I don't think I will."
