[attr="class","star2"] Their relief feels palpable. Tension eases from Fern’s shoulders and they lean into the reassurances that Jayden provides. He still looks confused, and Fern isn’t wholly sure to make it that much more clear to him, but for the moment, they decided that perhaps the common ground they’ve managed to find is enough for now.[break][break]

“I better be,” they reply with an edge of their typical teasing. Only a hint, because it still feels tentative and uncertain, but they’ve never done well with holding onto grievances for long. At least, not these sorts of grievances. Their axis returns to its proper tilt, peace creeping back into place between them. “The feeling is mutual.” That time, they lack the playfulness. This admission is an earnest one.[break][break]

Something shivers through Fern as he murmurs in their ear, and they can feel heat prickling under the hidden safety of their mask. Their own heart is thudding in their chest, the thump-thump out of sync and unmistakably thrilled by the words spoken. As they watch him, their smile only widens and finally their hand slips up to his face. “How silly of me to forget..” Fern lets out a short, amused huff, glance straying to his lips for a fraction of a second as their thumb skims over the bottom one.[break][break]

It is easier, then, to fall into step with him to the rhythm set by the orchestra’s melody. They follow, as if tethered to him and they cannot help but to be pulled along. But of course, what else would they rather be doing? Nothing, of course. That had been the whole point. Still, they have it in them to be at least a little sheepish. “Sorry that I’m…a bit difficult at times.”

[attr="id","moonpost"]As soon as they sit side by side, Fern sinks against him. Tucking into his side like there’s nowhere else that could possibly provide them the comfort they’re looking for. They’re so tired. Tired and sore and mentally drained on top of it all. Frantic worry has kept them awake, but now that his friend has been stabilized, it’s easier to relax.[break][break]

Just the tiniest bit.[break][break]

Still, they try to sift through everything they can recall immediately. It comes to Fern sluggishly, but they can practically see Jayden’s mind moving. Amused, they wonder if it ever really stops. They hum, brows furrowing. “Something similar happened on Pyre. With palkia and all the unown.”[break][break]

They don’t know as much. They’re not as familiar with the DRK triad, and how it all ties together, but it obviously does. Somehow.[break][break]

All Fern can focus on, though, is what’s right in front of them right then. They watch him examine the shard and that little flutter of pride returns. “I caught it. Or, well, my haunter caught it. We were trying to get to the primal point when it tripped, but the beam bounced back on it, and…well.” They wave a hand. “It sort of imploded.”[break][break]

And they were in the right place at the exact right moment. “I think all of the others were pulled into a spacial rift that palkia created.”

[attr="class","star2"]Contentment settles heavily over Fern– like a warm blanket being draped over their shoulders. Nothing, no one else could produce the same effect that jayden cross manages to. In action, in words. Fern’s mind is cotton-padded, pink-tinted. Wrapped up in the same fizzing static that their body is.[break][break]

They manage a falsely affronted scoff, though. “Are you suggesting that I’m an exhibitionist?” Certainly not–this was theirs, and they were a smidge possessive of it. Not that they were really bothered by the tease, however.[break][break]

They don’t mind the lingering marks left behind. There’s a pleasant sort of ache in the reminder of just exactly how they got them. It’s also a reminder that they’re not always as fragile as they might look at a glance. It’s something that Fern can handle and endure, gladly so. They chew on their bottom lip, warm with contentment as hands slide over their face and neck, down their arms. It’s enough to make their skin prickle all over again.[break][break]

Then a laugh crawls up their throat, soft and entertained. “Don’t apologize,” they insist, head tilting so that they can catch his eyes. “It was fun.” An understatement, but still.[break][break]

The teasing smile on their lips softens then, their own bottom lip puffing out just so. “I missed you too. Desperately so.” Not enough to incessantly bother him at work–as much as they would’ve liked to.[break][break]

“Tea it is.” Fern pulls him toward the back with little fanfare. Weaving them through the printing equipment in the back to reach the small kitchenette off to the side. They listen as they reach for the electric kettle on the counter, flipping the lid up to fill it with water.[break][break]

“Oh, has it? Then we’ll both be noted guests,” they reply with a wink as they glance back at him before setting the kettle back down to heat. Of course they had seen as much on memos about the event, but for now they play dumb. Happy to let him tell them for himself.

A discreet and removed one, yes, but a date all the same. No masks, no being tucked away in their homes or their offices. Lavaridge is out of the way, but a pretty little place to boot. Donned in a yukata of dark blue which fades to pale seafoam at the bottom, they fit right in.[break][break]

Though with the festival in full swing, it takes a moment to find jayden cross where he’s tucked himself away. Though when Fern does finally manage, his statement catches them by surprise.[break][break]

Fern tilts their head, brows knitting together even as they smile at him. “What? Of course I came…” They release a breath of laughter as they brush a hand against his cheek. “Did you think I’d have you come all this way and then stand you up?”[break][break]

Even more than that—why would they stand up the person they thought to be their partner? It is wild, silly. Their hand tosses their own hair lightly. “No, here I am. Sadly, you are stuck with me, Michail.” Fern smiles wider then, and steps closer.[break][break]

Always eager to be pulled into the other’s gravity.

But rather than press, the intent in his gaze promises that they’ll circle back to it later. Once they’ve passed the worst of the mess. Quickly, he recalls his typhlosion as they mean to make their escape.[break][break]

No matter how accustomed they are to the warping that comes with using PHANTOM FORCE, being pulled through is another experience entirely. Their stomach flips over as the four of them are yanked to safety by the other admin’s spectrier.[break][break]

Though they’ve never been on this cliffside before, Fern feels something akin to deja vu when they turn to see the large, seal looming over all of them, cracked open, vacant. Drawn by their interest, they drift closer– a hand coming to rest on a broken fragment of the ‘door’ as they peer into the darkness.[break][break]

“Something powerful…” they murmur in response to Alexandra Briarwood ’s question. “And…angry. Hateful.” Maybe even more so than the vengeful spirit they just encountered. Their eyes seek out Marza’s as they say so. Wondering if she feels it too. The familiar, lingering weight of malicious emotion.[break][break]

Just like the ominous sense they both felt on the peak of Mt. Pyre, after the primal point fired.[break][break]

It eats at Fern’s curiosity, but for the time being, his trepidation gets the better of him. Turning back to the group fully, he steps away from the seal and its barren interior. “I’m not sure we should stick around for very long.”[break][break]

Fern hums, expression furrowed in thought. “I’m not certain forgery would be so easy to teach at such a large scale. It requires a great deal of perfectionism, after all.” Their eyes roll up to the ceiling, still contemplating. “Mass counterfeit though..maybe..”[break][break]

The production scale for that is far larger, at least.[break][break]

“If seminars won’t do, what would you call them then?” Any hint of mandatory obligation is liable to have others turning their noses up.[break][break]

They nod swiftly. “There is benefit in working on a smaller scale, if I might be honest. It allows for more attention to detail, a narrower scope to fine tune.” And instruct on correction rather than give blanket admonishments.[break][break]

This is not combat, after all. Nor is it simple words on paper or a nicely minted coin. It’s practically an art form.

Though his gear isn't as heavy duty or tactical as some of this teammates, Fern still arrives incognito. Now that his name and face are out there, known by the likes of MATIAS SILPH , he can't take that risk of exposure. Not just yet. [break][break]

Stepping through the gateway behind the rest, the admin notes the immediate flurry of snow swirling around them, deflected by the WIDE GUARD put in place by oscar clayton 's frosmoth. Despite being right on their heels, there's not a moment spent dillydallying. "Party's already started, I see," he chimes pleasantly, countering the foxlike twist that his grin takes.[break][break]

He watches the SPIRIT SHACKLE of the decidueye get knocked away with a sharp glance. "Alright, you know the drill!" he calls to his dragapult as she's set loose from her ball. Cecilia hovers behind him, just long enough to open up a PHANTOM FORCE pocket. "Any takers?" he asks the other Rockets as he steps back into the portal.[break][break]

It hovers open for a moment longer, the invitation hanging just long enough should anyone choose to take the window of opportunity. Then it closes up again for Fern and his pokemon to be spit back out seconds later. There's no guarantee of exactness, but the aim is to appear directly behind one Kazimir Wynter and his ceruledge.[break][break]

A surprise party is a thrilling thing, isn't it? The proposal made by mint frost to put their heads together for Jayden's birthday has been nothing short of delightful. Every step of the way has been entertaining and fun, and a nice way to unwind amid everything else going on. Granted, most might not find party planning to be relaxing.[break][break]

"Not that I can think of," Fern replies, squinting as he scrutinizes a to-do he had scribbled down earlier that day. He glances back over his shoulder at Mint, grinning as he follows Fern about his apartment. "We should be fine. That would be like the fifth trip today, wouldn't it?" He points out as much with a laugh - forgetfulness here and there throughout the course of the day has had them both being a bit forgetful.[break][break]

Fern hums, head tilting. "I think, whoever shows up, will be plenty enough for him?" Honestly, he's wondering a bit how Jayden will react to even a decent handful of guests. Hopefully it'll be just fine - that's the point, after all! "Agreed, though." He smiles down at Mint, "it's a nice coincidence, isn't it? And I think we make a great party planning team."[break][break]

He's promptly distracted, though, by the first arrivals. The chime of the doorbell has him spontaneously on door duty. THEO BECKETT turns up, and he takes the dish presented. "Oh, excellent!" With a nudge of his head, he motions that the other follow him to where he sets the box down among the other snacks laid out. "I wouldn't have taken you for the surprise party type," he adds with a grin as he neatens everything up.[break][break]

Every so often, Fern peeks around the curtain and out the window, looking for any sign of jayden cross making his way up the drive. He looks over at Asriel Pryde after what has to be the tenth glance outside. "Any minute now, I think? Mint, what did you tell him?"

[attr="id","moonpost"]The darumaka that hops behind them, hoping to draw their eyes is paid no mind. It tries to no avail for several long paces down the path before giving up and wandering into the brush, grumbling. Fern, very clearly, is in a world of their own. They’re meant to be practicing, but at some point they scooped their mimikyu up and continued walking with her bundled into their arms.[break][break]

Perhaps their new position as admin has left a lot on their mind. Much more than they had initially guessed.

Oh, this absolutely has to be just beginner’s luck. There’s no way they’re actually good at this with the first line cast they had. They just…managed to land in the exact right spot, that’s all.[break][break]

A hatenna settles beside them, cheering when their catch is successful. Fern is more attentive to the praise that comes from Theo, however.[break][break]

“Who knew fishing could be so exhilarating.” No wonder Theo takes an active interest in it. Or maybe to him, it’s a peaceful endeavor.
