There is an excitement that builds in Fern Delaney’s chest the closer it draws to the turn of midnight. The silent, unspoken page flip of the calendar. Fern is usually the sort of person to revel in holiday spirit, though this year it has felt a bit difficult at times to conjure up the enthusiasm.[break][break]

The emotional tumult of Mt. Pyre weighs on him, the uncertainty of new adminship does as well. Though steadily on the mend, his injuries and general recuperation have been a tedious, achy process.[break][break]

But that does not mean he neglects it altogether.[break][break]

There are fewer decorations in his home than usual, and even fewer in Jayden’s, but now there are at least twinkly lights and a tree. Also smaller, and a bit hastily decorated between meetings and work. More importantly, there is someone to spend it with.[break][break]

Somehow, Fern convinced to retire early with him (with some..distraction,) and for what felt like ages afterward, he laid there pretending to sleep. All until he watched the blinking light of his alarm clock turn from 11:59 to 12:00.[break][break]

There is a gift hidden in the nightstand drawer on their side (intentionally stowed there earlier,) but Fern ignores it for now and opts to roll closer to his paramour, fingers drifting along the lines of his face as he attempts to draw him up out of sleep. Watching with wide and bright seafoam eyes, and a hushed voice laden with elation, much like a child’s might be.[break][break]

“Hey, it’s Christmas.”

Fern shrugs, “Its cute, it looks dragon typed. Nothing else to it.”[break][break]

Well this certainly isn’t something that he is going to let go of any time soon, is it? It’s (more than) a bit amusing to Fern how seriously the other man seems to be taking it.[break][break]

They smile, a hair smug. “That’s the spirit.”[break][break]

It’s also rather demanding, which seems very much like a challenge to Fern, who doesn’t always know to leave well enough alone.

[attr="class","fernpost"]Even Fern finds himself riddled with trepidation as he approaches the designated meet point. A lack of confidence is not something he’s accustomed to wearing, but he hasn’t been back to Pyre since that day. And though he had questions that demand answers, fear roils in his stomach over the concept of consequences. It’s the reason he’s not brought his beloved dragapult with him today—what if the rift demands her spirit back?[break][break]

He almost considered voicing the same concern for , but Fern knows better than to try and tell her to do shit.[break][break]

The weight feels hefty on the new admin’s shoulders— don’t mess this up. It’s why he arrives early, nice and punctual. Or perhaps that is ’s influence rubbing off on him. It doesn’t matter, either way. He’s here, they’ve agreed to follow the river, and there’s something weighty that settles over the group. Normally, chatty and charismatic, even Fern is uncharacteristically somber as he walks alongside Marza, a dreepy drifting just behind him.[break][break]

He catches her eye at one point, because he knows her well enough to know something about the rocket beast accompanying them has irritated her. His shoulders rise and fall silently. i dunno. It’s not his fault. He doesn’t know personally, save for her name and rank. So there’s literally nothing he could’ve done to her but exist, and Marza should know this. Duhh.[break][break]

Fern’s stomach turns over again, and his fingers flex with the itch to let them curl in the hem of Jayden’s sleeve where he lingers close. He avoids doing so, not wanting to betray the intensifying nervousness he feels over returning. Over what might not happen. This sort of anxiety feels misplaced under his skin, so he speaks to fill the elapsed quiet. “What do you expect to find along the river, exactly? A divergence?”[break][break]

"I am." A simple response, because that is all it is -- pure and simple fondness. "I enjoy dragon-types quite a bit as well," they add after a moment, "particularly applin. But that is why dragapult are the ideal pokemon." Their smile stretches wide. A perfect meshing of their favorite typings.[break][break]

A malamar and jellicent drift by alongside one another. It's a humorous sight--as if the two of them are taking a daily stroll just as they and are. Unfortunately, it must come to an end because Cecilia rockets from wherever she and the other dragapult have been playing. She erupts from a PHANTOM FORCE portal and accidentally collides with the jellicent. As it flounders and flails, Fern figures they may as well add to their collection, and tosses a pokeball at it.[break][break]

Still, their belief that dragapult are the best, holds true. No matter their own's clumsiness.[break][break]

"Oh, do you have the time for the answer to that question?" They tease. The stories they came up with (all fabricated, of course,) are numerous and longwinded.

Their head shakes back and forth. Perhaps, if they were in higher spirits, they would have breathed a laugh at the question. "No, I didn't. Got throttled by the biggest man I've ever seen, but no." Their gaze drifts up toward the bed, though.[break][break]

"I didn't see it, but...I wonder if Marza might have." It's a musing thought - mingled with the garbled words she spoke before they left the mountain, coupled with the recollection of the coin toss and how they two of them had chosen opposing ends.[break][break]

The fingers brushing through their hair is soothing, but after a moment, they pull free to achingly stand again, offering a hand to help pull him up. "We should let her rest without us hovering, hm?"[break][break]

Leading him back toward the living room where Ceci is still sprawled, Fern considers what they saw up there. "Souls, yes. Ceci's found me, then returned to her body. But there were more pokemon...people." Their brows furrow then, glance shifting to Jayden's. "Flames..moltres? And..." Hm. They don't know how to describe the shadows yet, and the strange emotions they carried with them as they passed by Fern as they floated atop their haunter.[break][break]

Sitting gingerly in the remaining open space, Fern pats the seat next to them. All the want right now, is to sag against the cushions. "You didn't. Did you see palkia then?"[break][break]

All the discussion draws a sluggish thought, and their eyes lighten, just for a moment. "Oh. I have something to show you," they say as they reach into their sweater pocket. "I caught this." There's a hint of pride in their voice as they uncurl their hand to show him the fragmented primal shard. No bigger than the length of their palm.

They hum softly at the clarification. One, and the other. It isn't a difficult symbolism to piece together, even if Jayden doesn't fully explain the nuance. Power and control. A concept they never shared with their own father, and so it makes their heart ache to know that there is pain that exists under the other's impassive expression.[break][break]

But there is also resilience, too. Their fingers sift through the ruffled dark locks of his hair, and then lower to snag his chin. "A wolf's strength means little against a raven's cleverness." The soft affection in their gaze sharpens for a flickering moment, a flash of protectiveness for the vulnerability they have been offered. "After all, you are the one who is still alive, are you not?"[break][break]

Mental holds are not so easily broken, though. It pulls together slowly in Fern's mind. Clicking together like puzzle pieces to make a scattered patchwork of little moments that betray the residual dominance of the senior Cross. Fern knows care and warmth, and has (shamefully) taken it for granted before. So if they can let those feelings drift through the other, bit by bit, they like to think that maybe they can pry the fingers of that vice grip loose. One by one. Knuckle by knuckle, even, if it's needed.[break][break]

The lull allows for further reminders of their own upbringing, and a fond smile finds its natural home on their face. "That's right." Fern never thought that they would miss the old city as much as they often did. "A condemned mill. I was curious." One of their lesser slights and run-ins with local law enforcement, in all honesty. The greater rule breaks came later.[break][break]

And somehow his da had never held it against him. Even if Fern deserved it every time.

[attr="class","star2"]The last thing Fern expects is this. Granted, they haven't been close like this since before the meteor impact. Not alone. Perhaps they just weren't anticipating the betrayal of hunger so quickly.[break][break]

It's not something they're in the mind to complain about as mouth and teeth travel downward in a way that makes them drop their head back, and a noisy sigh tumble from their own lips. Fingers flex tighter in the other's hair for a moment as they're pulled closer and their knees tighten against his waist.[break][break]

They stare at him with dazed eyes as Jayden pulls back, a question on his tongue. Is that okay?[break][break]

They blink, slow and hazy, as if lost in a dream. Or maybe this is one? Ruddy color paints the pale skin not darkened with healing bruises--a mingle of heated want and flustered emotion. Their bottom lip rolls between their teeth, sensation lingering from the pleasant sting caused by the other's nips and tugs to it. A single nod, then the slow spread a smile that can be termed as nothing but affectionate.[break][break]

A fluttering in their chest is relentless. Seeps through their lungs and thins their shallow, rapid breath. "It is," they murmur as hands drift over the warmth of their face, and it turns inward to press a kiss against one palm. "I want that, yes."[break][break]

Finally, the slow motion slide Fern seemed to fall into reverts and speeds to real time again, in tandem with the tug of their hands in the front of his shirt, balled up and wrinkling the fabric so that they might capture his mouth again. Bruising and ravenous. They have always been a selfish creature, all magpie proclivity and want.[break][break]

"Mine." They breathe it into every pause, in every gap that requires the need for air. A hand drops back, scrabbling for stability as they lean back slightly and the other hand pulls Jayden forward over them by the collar. Papers and tools are scattered and knocked to the side, but they pay the mess little mind.

[attr="class","star2"] Fern is admittedly grateful for all of the distraction that provides in offering to trade bits of gossip and conversation. There's still a residual sting that simmers under the surface, hidden by Fern's coy smiles and vigor in picking others apart alongside their friend.[break][break]

By the time they split apart again, they think that perhaps it's okay. This is no more than a little blip and they're sturdier than some forlorn, mopey hound. But the self-directed, internal pep talk does little to actually prepare them for Jayden's sudden reappearance beside them.[break][break]

"Hi." Something softens underneath the sour feelings, and their lips twitch upward--until the question follows.[break][break]

"What?" Their gaze cuts to Jayden's, eyes narrowing slightly behind the mask as their expression warps with mild confusion. "I didn't dance with Oscar. I haven't really danced with anyone."[break][break]

That hadn't been their intent, but then Jayden had walked away. Promising to return, and now it's ages later. All the while, they have watched him at a distance, inconspicuously so, as he socialized and turned the floor with others who were not them.[break][break]

They should know better, but the grumble slips out, "Unlike you." More like a huff under their breath as their eyes slide away in a mix of petulance and shame for feeling so stupidly jealous.

[attr="class","star2"]In the wake of his brief interlude with , several things seemed to happen in rapid succession. For starters, the dance floor itself officially opened up– making his activity suggestion that much more relevant. Really, Fern wasn’t exactly meaning to extend an outright invitation so much as make conversation about dancing itself. And then if it led in some direction, it would come to that.[break][break]

Really, though, he wanted first and foremost to dance with his date. But as they shifted their glance toward , they caught the first flickers of disappointment. Largely concealed by his ability to keep a straight face, and also the mask in place on his face. It was still there, though, and then gone in a flash. Just as quickly as he excused himself. Behind his own mask, Fern frowned, fingers drifting up to ghosted over the other’s as they settled on his shoulder. “Okay..”[break][break]

There wasn’t time to debate it.[break][break]

Fern turned then, to direct his attention back to . Though they supposed they would not mind sharing a dance, if only to help the beast improve his mood about the whole affair. But before he could do much of anything, another masked stranger was intercepting and dragging a helpless Oscar away. All they could do was shrug helplessly at the other man, clearly unable to stop this person who was on a mission to dance with Oscar.[break][break]

All this led to a confused, slightly despondent Fern wandering through the crowd again, frown settled on his face as he wove his way to the bar. Only, he didn’t find there, as implied. And when he looked out toward the dancefloor, there was someone else with him.[break][break]

Something uneasy and annoyed twisted in the pit of his stomach.[break][break]

An arm looped through his, though, and he turned to find Yumi again. The sight of his friend was a welcome distraction and he let her pull him away until he could flop on his end of the sofa dramatically. “Please, I would like nothing more.” A long sigh escaped him. “Got anything good?” Probably better than him, at least.
