He is busy scratching under the bird’s beak when the question reminds him that he is in the company of another.[break][break]

Fern blinks, turning back to Matias with a nonchalant smile. “Because you’re awfully entertaining in your annoyance.”[break][break]

The corviknight tries to snatch a ferroseed up for a snack before Fern taps it with a pokeball, saving the other creature from a grisly fate.

Oh. Fern recalled seeing something about that on the news. Not that he’d paid close attention to the report. How interesting, though. “May I ask why you believe that?” It would be a lot of work to go to, after all, to create a whole new identity—paperwork, and all, for a nepo baby who might change his mind and wish to go home once he decided he didn’t like his new life anymore, it it bored him.[break][break]

He didn’t mean to be skeptical. Well, okay, yeah he did. It was a tedious process. And the other had to be sure of it. He did not know Michaelis beyond this sparse interaction, so Fern had to evaluate and bank on what information was provided to the best of his ability.[break][break]

Well paying or not, it was a long, exhaustive task. He’d save himself the trouble if it wasn’t worth it, or going back on it meant it could cause problems for his business.[break][break]

Fern tilted his head in quiet observation, then adjusted his false glasses and took a long sip from his earl grey. “What does someone you like…well, look like to you. If I’m going to build this identity for you, it will also have to be with you. Think long and hard about that. Even the smallest details are important.”[break][break]

There was no wiggle room for error if he was a well-known face in his home region.

“Oh, is that so?” he replied musinly, the long glance he sent the mechanical Pokémon belying the fact that he wasn’t too sure if he believed that remark. The beeping was a bit trite, no?[break][break]

But he wasn’t fluent in Joules, so Fern shrugged it off. More focused now on being a bother to repay the effort for bothering him in the first place. His smile stretched thin and wide. “Yes and no, my errands are elsewhere. And now I’ve forgotten where the ferry docks are.” He knew exactly where the ferry docks were.[break][break]

The sharpness in his own gaze matched Paxton’s accepting the challenge. He had no issue calling a bluff, and if it wasn’t a bluff, then he had equally no issue making a deliberately drawn out walk as harrowing as was possible. And Fern often found he was capable of quite a lot when it came to irritation.[break][break]

He blinked a few times, thinly veiled politeness in his voice. “Be a dear?”

“I’ll take your word for it!” he quips back, a crooked smile on his face.

Fern shares this quality with her, though maybe to a lesser extent, so if they continue to make one another laugh, they’ll find themselves in good company for it. Fern is the sort who, once he begins, cannot always manage to quell the sound.

“Made them?” he echoes curiously, taking the rose and twirling it between his fingers as he peers down at the bright shade of the petals. “How lovely. Botany is fascinating.” His glance flicks up to hers, “Did you assist with them?” Then he makes a mental note to take her suggestion later and check out the page.

Obviously pleased with the attention, Ceci twirls around Cygne with delighted trills and coos. Always easy to please.

“Oh! There are certainly worse problems to have,” he replies as his hands clap together in obvious delight. Fern also has a habit of attracting ghosts, but he also goes out of his way to find them, too.

He can’t help but laugh a bit at the startle tactic from the duskull, a wide smile hiding behind his hand lest she take offense from his amusement at her expense. “At least they are willing to learn,” he offers, opening his hands in greeting toward the little guy, “they could be malevolent rather than impish. And that’s never a fun time.”

He peeks through the window at a distance, and noticing the TV light, promptly changes tack and crosses the street. He’s not about to chance a night owl, or stirring someone who fell asleep in the main area of the house.[break][break]

The house he swerves to is also on the smaller side—clearly these were built prior to the grandiosity of the others in the cul-de-sac. Remnants of a more standardized unit of buildings. This yard is also littered with toys, but there are no lights on, so Fern dances around the toys. Careful not to trip, as he edges along the exterior looking for the best possible entrance.[break][break]

Cecilia, with her ghostly body, fades and phases through the front door—confirming the lack of a fancy alarm system when she rematerializes on the other side.[break][break]

Rather than portal through and potentially land noisily in an unpredictable spot, Fern lands on a narrow basement window. Years of experience in his youth makes it easy for him to wiggle the latch loose to slide it open without breaking the glass.[break][break]

Then he slips through the narrow opening— the only noise a quiet thunk as his feet land on the laundry machine directly below it, paving the way for him to then hop down to the cement floor.

It’s thrilling—it makes him feel sixteen and mischievous again, doesn’t it. The dragapult drifts down, sliding through the floor above and through the ceiling. He flashes her an ok? gesture with his fingers in question, to which she lets out a quiet huff of confirmation.[break][break]

Fern cannot stifle the bark of laughter that follows the secondary, tch. Louder and more demanding. It’s hysterical. Are they supposed to be intimidated right now?[break][break]

They are about to say something when a corviknight breaks onto the scene, only to be pushed away by virizion. Fern tries to whistle out a tune in a bid to draw the bird back to them.[break][break]

It usually works with Kuru, Marza Volchitsa’s corviknight, anyway.

The irritation that radiates off of matias is nearly palpable and fern finds this entirely delightful and entertaining. Such a severe slight, to have caught the Pokémon first by being friendly to it.[break][break]

He mimics the “tch” right back at Matias, though it’s obvious that the sound is more taunt than mirrored annoyance or aggravation.[break][break]

Maybe if Matias hadn’t been a sourpuss about it, fern would have offered the little guy up. But now that’s just too bad. He shrugs at a passing Empoleon like what can ya do? The large bird shrugs back and continues waddling away.
