It’s admittedly a relief to have finally found jayden cross, though they weren’t particularly worried about never managing to, no matter the dramatic declarations they make. Fern returns the smile, and laughs at the remark. “True enough. Though, I think it’s fair to say the produce aisle isn’t quite as crowded.” He isn’t wrong, though. Fern would recognize him anywhere.[break][break]

Fern’s own hand lifts, tucking under his partner’s chin for a moment. Though he’s usually the unfazed one. The compliment burrows deep and warms his face under the mask before they can bounce back. The grin on Fern’s face stretches wider. “Not quite as good as you, definitely.” Murmured as the same hand smooths over Jayden’s suit lapel briefly.[break][break]

Following his lead, Fern drifts alongside jayden cross when he pinpoints on another partygoer, with an unmistakable shock of white hair. Though Fern has met oscar clayton once before, he’s not one hundred percent certain it was him until he speaks. Rather than actively address him by name, Fern casts him a coy smile, “Ah, hello there. Explored any ruins lately? Pried amulets from any skeletons?”[break][break]

Though Oscar’s lament makes him wonder if perhaps that particular mission would prove more entertaining for the beast. “Is dancing not to your favor?” Genuinely asked, as they watch him curiously.[break][break]

As they chat, an unmistakable voice hisses over his shoulder, and Fern whirls away from his company, briefly distracted—curious to see if his guess was correct over who he’d previously thought was Yumi Hasegawa from the corner of his eye.[break][break]

He’s pleased to find that he was absolutely correct, “Darling, you look superb!” he trills, before lamenting her question. “I’ve only just arrived, so please tell me you’ve got some good tidbits to share.” Teal blue eyes flit around the room before returning to his friend, “Though, a quick glance reveals some questionable wardrobe choices alone.”[break][break]

Him included? Maybe. But Fern has always been maudlin, if anything. “Cocktails in a bit, for sure,” he agrees as she drifts away, confidently marching up to two men not far away. He snorts and turns back to his date, and their company.[break][break]

“So,” he claps his hands together, “dancing?”

Fern looked on as Zev cut right to the chase. “And a gem from Mt. Pyre as well,” he says easily, as he fishes the primal shard he’d caught, wrapped in a soft cloth. He was not as quick to hand it over to her, however.[break][break]

“I would like to clarify that should nothing come of today’s effort, this will remain in my personal possession, unless one of our superiors, or declan walsh, says otherwise. Any, ah, future tinkering that results in success without my attendance, I would like to be notified of.” Despite the playfulness in his typical demeanor, there was only clear calm and conciseness now.[break][break]

“I live, quite literally, nearby. So making my way here will be of little issue.” With that said, Fern too, offered out the shard he’d collected for her to observe. Though he was not scientifically gifted, he found he took a particular interest in what this shard in particular might produce, given the rift between life and death he’d been firsthand witness to from the sky above the mount.[break][break]

And as a result, he did not intend for the shard to be passed elsewhere, outside the three of them for the foreseeable time being.

The swift answer prompts a laugh, “An unsurprising answer. She’d match Lada here, then. Sylveon might be nice, though I suppose there’s time enough to figure it out.” They squirrel away that tidbit, all the same.[break][break]

Knowing what he especially likes is good for future use.[break][break]

“Oh, no it’s alright. I just don’t want you to accidentally wind up with ink on your fingers. Pain to get out.” They look down at their work briefly, frowning. “I’m still not happy with it.” Fern’s attention doesn’t linger there for long, though.[break][break]

Their brows lift as they shoot him a guilty little look. “Oh, did you now? Keeping tabs, hmm?”[break][break]

Letting the eevee hop down from their arms to greet his umbreon with curious sniffs, Fern draws close again and peers up at him through slightly narrowed eyes.[break][break]

“You’re right, I did not. But I go home and rest when it is time for it, and I don’t take my work along with me. Plus, you know, I’ve got the whole holistic care thing down pat.”[break][break]

They watch him carefully, a small smile softening their features even as they say, “Can you claim you do the same?” Fern’s rise to his face, holding it carefully as their thumbs sweep over the circles under his eyes.[break][break]

“You look tired, dear. Though your distraction tactics are still very good, clever boy.”

It is only then that Fern realizes that Matias was struggling to place them. As much as they prefer to be the center of attention, their recent elevation within Rocket leaves Fern grateful for the slight lapse in familiarity.[break][break]

“Yep! That’s me, posters.” He says it with a laugh. “You bet. People certainly aren’t holding back from their event advertising now that the word isn’t ending. No more doom and gloom, and so on.”[break][break]

The creature that approaches is a little funky looking, but to Fern, it’s much cuter than that weirdo worm Matias just caught. Kinda like a smushed face lizard. Rather than set Nimuë on it, he distracts it with a poffin from his pocket (much to Nim’s dismay,) and while it is gobbling it up, he tosses a pokeball out at it.[break][break]

“Wonder what a frigibax is! Guess we’ll find out.”

“It’s Cora,” Fern laughs then, “original, I know. Cora the corsola. But I was pretty young when I got her, so I like to give myself a little slack.”[break][break]

The polteageist, startled by the salamence, drifts backward until it bumps into Fern’s shoulder. They’re quick to offer it the escape of a pokeball. They have a space in their back garden for sinistea and polteageist to inhabit. It’ll fit nicely among them.[break][break]

“Ah, I’ve overstayed,” they murmur as they look down at the watch on their wrist. “This is where I take my leave, lest I miss my evening appointment.” Fern flashes him a grin as they turn to go with Cora scuttling along behind, “May we meet again soon, sir. Work on that panache, hm?”

Nim catches sight of a sneasel attempting to sneak up on Fern, aiming to PICKPOCKET him for anything that catches its interest. That is Nim’s job, though, and she’s not about to let the wild pokemon steal the apples she knows that Fern keeps in his pockets for her.[break][break]

Before the sneasel can get sticky fingers, the typhlosion blasts it with FLAMETHROWER, belching a steady stream of flame until Fern follows it with a pokeball.[break][break]

“Mm, quite.” They grin, head tipping back toward Matias. “Posters aren’t gonna print themselves, you know?”

Fern’s eyes snap over to Jayden, wide as his brows shoot up. “P-“ what he’s about to stay is cut off by a giggle that is equal parts entertained and confused. “Pardon?”[break][break]

Oh, sweet sweet summer child…[break][break]

“A send out for a late night hook up, usually,” they clarify with another laugh. It’s not mocking, though. Just amused. Something that falls away when he manages to follow all of that up with a question that comes through incredibly sweet.[break][break]

Their face colors slightly, maybe only somewhat visible in the dim light. “Well..” they pause, turning toward him so that they can snag him by the chin and lean up to kiss him again. That time on the lips. Soft and slow before they resettle on their heels. “Because then I’d prefer to be doing more of that than working.”[break][break]

Fern shoots him a sidelong glance afterward. “I like smiling with you too, though.” It makes them feel giddy, really.[break][break]

They feel rather pleased with themselves when Jayden seems keen on their idea. “Lukyan,” they repeat and their own accent pulls on the name, but there is something in the way it sounds in Jayden’s voice that makes their stomach flip over.[break][break]

The draw from the two distortion pokemon lights the night with heavy sparkles. “Huh. How about that? It actually worked…” He frowned. “Did you want the ledyba too? Or just samples?”

Finally.[break][break]

Fern has made it to the end. At long last, they can take a break after endless halls with creepy rooms, a banshee lady, an undead party…oh, and the giant mouth made out of hallway parts they’ve only just narrowly escaped. Once they get through the exit, they can reconnect with jayden cross, and solemnly vow never to badger him into participating in another haunted house again unless it’s obviously of the corny variety.[break][break]

Only…it’s not a true exit they find on the other side, is it?[break][break]

Absently, they take the offered bottle of water as they gawk at the attendant in the sterile, brightly lit room. He wasn’t done yet? Why? He’s too tired for an argument, though. So grumbling, Fern trudges to the burnt, daunting door and pushes onward. No rest for the wicked, etc etc yada yada.[break][break]

Oh, but this…was weird. When did he return outside, let alone to a route? He can’t tell which one it is, but this must be some pretty fancy simulation. It has to be. They’re in Mauville. They feel as if they’re wandering the hellscape of a particularly elaborate nightmare as flame and smoke rise around them, but do not crowd them away from the path.[break][break]

The prickle on the back of their neck is a familiar one. They’ve already experienced the sensation of being watched in here, after all.

They let out a musing hum, smile widening. “Smart of you,” they say with a quick wink. “This is Rhiannon, by the way,” it seems they are in need of the introduction now as the eevee wiggles in their arms, happy with the attention, “I haven’t figured out what to evolve her into just yet. And Ceci’s taken a shine to her.”[break][break]

The easy rapport and banter that has developed between them is a far cry from when they first began to interact, and it's something that Fern appreciates more and more as time passes. Each unexpected tease is a little surprise.[break][break]

Though Fern should have known the subject of work would have the other skirting things. They sigh as he very obviously dodge around the subject, and turn to follow him. “Ah, careful. It’s still drying. I’ve been offered the opportunity to provide the invitations for an upcoming gala in Slateport.”[break][break]

It’s a matter of pride, yes, but they’re not quite done with what they were talking about previously. “Jayden,” they say, quiet and soft, but perhaps a bit more stern than the other might typically expect from them. They tilt to the side and crane their head to catch his eye. “I just want to know that you’re taking care of yourself.”[break][break]

Their own injuries are still evident—bruising across their face and holding tape on their nose. But Fern is not the only one to have sustained injury, a fact that they make clear they haven’t forgotten as they watch Jayden earnestly.

It’s a wonder that Fern can hold onto him like this and not be cut by the sharp edges that seem to come up around him. They hang on, though, not easily dissuaded until he pulls back only long enough to lead Jayden through the entry.[break][break]

Fern can sense the ease of the other’s tension under their hands and they breathed a sigh of relief. Their eyes squeeze shut, heart thumping at the words he speaks despite how worn thin and exhausted they are. Even now, there is a thrill that comes with knowing that Jayden was concerned for their well-being.[break][break]

“Me too,” the mutter back, burrowing closer if that’s even possible, as their fingers ball in the back of his shirt. Their breath is shaky with fatigue, and they feel some of the knot in their chest that has been present since they returned home begin to finally ease. Just a bit.[break][break]

They sag a little under Jayden’s touch, smiling faintly as lips press against their forehead, “So much happened. I don’t even know where to start.” And really, they just want to sleep for a year straight. They can’t do that, though. Not with Marza as she is. Their legs feel like they could buckle under them, still.

The line of thought that spirals in Jayden’s mind is not one that Fern’s follows. They are too tired, too addled, too dizzy. All of it compounded into a mildly dazed state on top of the tasks they’ve been completing on auto-pilot just so they aren’t left with idle hands and anxiety.[break][break]

They’ve settled for insomnia instead.[break][break]

“Huh?” They feel his arms tighten around them, and though they don’t mind it, it does give them pause. Jayden seems to coil, even as he holds onto Fern. Poised for attack. Fern’s hand drifts down to cover the hand that appeared to be reaching for something as they shook their head. “It’s not a threat, I-“ They glance back over their shoulder as if it’ll manifest Marza, awake and okay, to walk down the short hall.[break][break]

“Marza Volchitsa is asleep,” they clarify, voice still hushed, and untangle from the sturdy hold so that they can pull him inside. Their hands wring together. “Actually, she’s been out for hours, and she was in bad shape.” The worried edge betraying that nagging thought as they look at Jayden again— I’m worried.[break][break]

They are quick to step back into his space, though, as they realize they weren’t quite done. Their arms slip around his middle again, and the side of their cheek presses against his chest. “I’m really glad you’re here.” They have questions of course, but their mind is still fuzzy from the knock they took and they just want to take comfort in this.[break][break]

Just for a little bit.[break][break]

“Hello, sir,” their greeting, though not lacking necessary formality, is still rather chipper as they enter the training facility housed beneath Casino Starlight.[break][break]

“It’s good to see you.” It’s almost a bit odd to see him without the donned visage of Tuesday. Maybe it would be a little nostalgic, reminiscent of their early trials with the underboss. But the lack of disguise also promotes a sense of belonging to something, and for that, Fern is grateful.[break][break]

Their chin tilts upward in a quiet ah of understanding. “Yes, that is the case.” The Tera Orb finds its way from pocket to hand, held up in indication. Bit of a celebratory gift to himself, really, though he hadn’t yet had the opportunity to really utilize it yet. “It’ll be a learning experience for the both of us, then.”[break][break]

Fern grins, easily so in a way that could be interpreted as sheepish, but is really just a bit more nonchalant than anything else. “Been a bit hectic as of late, is all.”[break][break]

Of course it has—the reasoning of which, Mars touches upon next. Fern has enough wherewithal to behave humbly about it; though this is an achieved goal, it is still a daunting one now that it’s actually been placed in his hands. “Ah, well— I thank you, and the rest of Rocket, for the opportunity.” They lift one arm and curl it in a can do sort of flex. “Just takes the right amount of moxie.”[break][break]

And they’ve got it, as far as they’re concerned.[break][break]

As if eager to meet those held expeditions, Fern wastes no time in releasing a hisuian typhlosion from her ball. “Nimuë is outfitted for two different typings, depending on what you’d like to see. I hadn’t expected the shards to be variant depending on that, but I figured perhaps it would be useful to see the difference.”

The laugh almost startles them, and they look up as their heart unexpectedly skitters and flips at the sound. Have they ever heard a full, uncontained laugh from Jayden.[break][break]

It’s something they could get addicted to.[break][break]

“Maybe…but only if you try to sneak back out again.” They would wrinkle their nose in play, but the tape pressed over the bridge prevents them from the inevitable pain from that reaction.[break][break]

The affectionate smile that finds its home on their lips whenever Jayden is around, though…that they can manage just fine.[break][break]

It only softens more as he bestows some affection on the eevee, who is more than happy to receive the scratchies.[break][break]

Warmth seeps through them as he kisses their cheek, and they reach with their free hand to card through his hair. “I mean, of course I’d like to see you more,” they offer honestly, “but I understand. I’ve been busy too, y’know?”[break][break]

They step back then, enough to survey him, as their expression turns furtive. “As long as you’re not overdoing it.”
