Soot and ash filled Gideon's throat before he had time to bring his arm to his mouth. The smoke irritated his already damaged lungs, causing him to begin hacking erratically. It was a chesty, painful cough. Made his eyes water.[break][break]

What was worse, his and his Pokémon's vision was compromised within the darkness of the SMOKESCREEN. I can't see, he thought, panic welling in his gut.[break][break]

"Thrash around! Air out the smoke!" It was the only strategy that came to mind in the heat of the moment. Meanwhile, they were sitting ducks while the ROCKET's CHARIZARD hovered overhead.

Sure, GIDEON GRAVES was fighting alongside Katherine Fairburne. [break][break]

But neither his nor his Pokémon's battling skills were much to write home about. They had been trained for field work, as educational ambassadors - not to fight against criminals. This would likely become abundantly clear to the Elite Four member within just a few minutes of Gideon's VOLCARNO entering the fray.[break][break]

It's flames burned the edges of TANGROWTH's tendrils, but it was a short-lived attack effortlessly countered. The moth was almost immediately jettisoned backwards by a POWER WHIP. It screeched in pain, not accustomed to actually enduring such assaults.[break][break]

In comparison, Gideon's rescuer made it all look so easy. She barely lifted a finger or said a word of instruction, yet her Ultra Beast expertly danced around the field, dispensing each of the Grass-types in turn.[break][break]

"Arceus... incredible." Gideon breathed, taking the opportunity to step closer to the woman while the ROCKET grunts scrambled to regroup. "Who are you? You made that look effortless."

Ollie's dumb smile was met with Gideon's own familiar, thin-lipped grin. The ranger's gesture was reassuring, in a way, so much so that the feeling of it painted the mist around them a soft pink. [break][break]

"I suppose they do." Look different. He assumed most even hid among them, living their day to day much the same as the rest of the public. Except in times of war, like today.[break][break]

"Not that I know of, no." Gideon responded, softer this time. He knew Ollie was teasing, per usual. But the notion was still a frightening one. "Let's hope they have little interest in my fossils and old books."[break][break]

Even as he spoke it, Gideon knew it was a hollow hope. ROCKET's greedy tendrils were likely hooked in all facets of the region.[break][break]

"... hm?" A flash of something suddenly caught the professor's attention. "Did you see that...?"[break][break]

A shadow in the mist, enormous. Fading in and out between the conjured islands.[break][break]

Was that... bone? Horns?

"Ah– right!" Of course he had Pokémon on hand. Gideon wasn't exactly hoping to stick around and fight, though. His battling prowess - or lack thereof - was subpar at best. Selfishly, he'd kind of hoped that Angelo would just whisk him to safety in lieu of taking care of these ROCKETs.[break][break]

"Proteus," Gideon began, releasing his SLOWKING. "Surf!"[break][break]

An exorbitant amount of water immediately blasted from the Pokémon's maw, flooding the battlefield with a torrential force. The grunts' Pokémon were consequently swept off their feet, leaving them vulnerable to further attack from angelo vestri.[break][break]

"So you're just here to save the day, then?" Gideon probed, his eyes still locked on the battle in front of them. "I didn't know Nautica did mercenary work."

The ROCKET operative's grip tightened around his jaw, nails biting into already damaged skin. Instinctively, Gideon fought her hold, attempting to pull away, but she was much stronger than she looked. [break][break]

She held him in place with more than just her strength, though. The threat of the whip - and the implication that his life was in her hands - was enough to get him to comply. He had nothing to hide, anyway.[break][break]

"I've been here for days, before all of this happened. My team and I are staying in Dewford while we conduct surveys in Granite Cave..." Luckily, he'd let his technicians stay behind in town to rest that morning while he continued their efforts. Hopefully they were alright. [break][break]

Right, surveys. Would she know what that meant? "Population surveys of the Pokémon in the cave... comparing that data to historic records. We want to see if the presence of the rift is impacting their numbers in any way."[break][break]

Was this knowledge worth his life?[break][break]

"But... no. No research is worth the hell I've been through here..."

"Ah!" Boot to knuckles, blood sputtered out in misty droplets as Gideon yelped in alarm. He could feel the pressure of her heel on his hands, the way his tendons threatened to snap, bones grinding under rubber. Such awful, new sensations.[break][break]

"Help.." He breathed out, though it was so quiet the plea was likely lost in the din of the Pokémon battling around them. "Haa.. hel.. help.."[break][break]

Luckily for GIDEON GRAVES, the mystery combatant was doing just that. An inky SMOKESCREEN pervaded the surrounding area, giving him an opportunity to surge closer.[break][break]

If he was indeed able to dislodge the ROCKET grunt, Gideon would try and crawl away.

He'd acted on instinct, despite the dangerous environment they found themselves in. Luckily Gunner Graves snatched his arm and pulled him back before Gideon faced a similar fate as @rosie.

"... Right." The professor responded, watching with a tense expression as Caleb Harcourt rescued their traveling companion and brought her back from the brink of death. What a relief - at least she survived. With minimal injuries, even. Well, physical ones, anyway.

Once things had calmed down and they'd made it back to dry land, Gunner indicated a waterfall in the distance. It was hard to discern, but Gideon thought he saw something off peeking behind the roaring water.

Giving @rosie a reassuring smile and a nod to the other two men, GIDEON GRAVES pushed onward toward the waterfall.

But... the adrenaline was fading. Pain, agonizing and debilitating, rose to take its place. His face, his chest, his entire body felt bruised and bloodied.[break][break]

Gideon couldn't find the strength to continue running. Couldn't ignore the pain anymore. [break][break]

He needed to rest. If he didn't stop now, he felt like the fire in his lungs would burn through him.[break][break]

The professor braced himself against a nearby rock face and slumped to the ground. Against his will, his eyes fluttered closed. [break][break]
