He needed to escape. The paralyzing feeling of suffocation, of the smoke in his lungs teasing an impending death, caused the panic in Gideon's gut to surge throughout his body. He'd never felt so afraid in his entire life.[break][break]

Thinking fast, Gideon returned his TYRANITAR to it's Poké Ball and released his DITTO. Despite being an atheist, he suddenly found himself praying to countless gods that this plan would work.[break][break]

"Transform!" Morpho observed the CHARIZARD overhead and began their metamorphosis. Almost instantly an exact replica, down to the inky black scales, stood before him in the haze. The professor grabbed hold of its neck and screamed,[break][break]

"FLY! Get us out of here!" As wings frantically flapped to become airborne, streams of fire licked at the claws of the escaping DITTO-CHARIZARD.

"A better god?" Being atheist, Gideon had just blurted out the name more so as a colloquial exasperation than anything else. There were so many 'gods' that humanity worshipped, the list running through his mind looked like something out of a Star Wars intro.[break][break]

"Palkia? Dialga?" The professor probed, feeling a little less on edge now that Katherine Fairburne's Pokémon was dominating the battlefield. "One of the Legendary Beasts, perhaps?"[break][break]

He could go on, but he doesn't. From Gideon's expression and faintly teasing smirk, she'd probably realize he was mostly joking at this point. "Regardless, I apologize if I offended you."[break][break]

"I'm not the one fighting, am I?"

GIDEON GRAVES wasn't in his right mind. Because of this, he wasn't able to discern that the ROCKET in front of him simply wished to circumvent him rather than murder him. [break][break]

How many criminals had he encountered already that had tried to take his life? She certainly couldn't have been any different.[break][break]

Proteus' YAWN had been effective, that much was obvious by the change in their body language. But what Gideon hadn't expected, or really noticed that much, was the small UNOWN-K that was flitting at the edges of the battle. Now, after the ROCKET blipped from one side of the field to the other, this new Pokémon took over.[break][break]

Shit. His attention was split, but it was the HIDDEN POWER that snatched the professor's focus away from the ROCKET on his other side.[break][break]

With no way to dodge, he could only hope to deflect the powerful attack head-on. [break][break]

"Power Gem!" A bright red beam of energy immediately gathered and the surged out from the jewel on SLOWKING's crown, colliding with the HIDDEON POWER and causing a huge explosion to erupt from the point of impact.[break][break]

The force of it nearly knocked him off his feet.

Mounds of earth and rock began to tumble down the cliffside at speeds that Gideon would never be able to outrun, even if he was uninjured and could manage to move that quickly. Luckily, his SLOWKING saw the ROCK SLIDE coming and managed to use its PSYCHIC power to stop the momentum of the falling stones.[break][break]

Amidst the descending rubble Gideon could make out two figures - a Pokémon and... fuck, another ROCKET.[break][break]

"Just let me leave! I'm no threat to you!" The professor began, venom and frustration lacing every shouted word, until–[break][break]

Flashes of light and cacophonous, disorienting sounds pervaded the area around him. THEO BECKETT gets his wish, as both Gideon and his SLOWKING become momentarily blinded.

Giant ones, barreling straight for them.[break][break]

Before Gideon could even think to move, he was being knocked out of the way by ollie morales. Quick thinking on the ranger's part meant he'd been saved from being trampled by a gigantic, prehistoric-looking Pokémon. What the hell was that thing?[break][break]

Groaning from the impact, he looked up at Ollie and responded in a relieved voice, "Yeah, thanks to you."[break][break]

The crack of the hammer caused a huge impact, but instead of injuring the gigantic Pokémon, it simply... poofed in a cloud of mist. It wasn't gone for long, though, before it rematerialized a few feet away and continued its charge.[break][break]

"Shit, shit, shit. We need to get up." Scrambling out from beneath Ollie, Gideon quickly righted himself and ordered his ROTOM to use THUNDER WAVE. Was this thing even capable of being paralyzed? Gideon supposed they were about to find out.

It felt a bit like being submerged underwater. Gideon thought he heard a voice, muffled and murmuring, but it faded in and out enough to be inconsequential. He felt the tactile sensation of fingers gripping his chin, but couldn't muster the will to even respond. [break][break]

Limp and wordless, Gideon felt himself slipping away into the sea. It was dark and heavy, but muted the pain he'd felt mere moments before. [break][break]

Just a few more minutes...

Suddenly, tendrils of light enveloped the darkness, thrust away the heavy fog, and wrested him upwards. [break][break]

Disoriented, Gideon's eyes snapped open and he inhaled sharply, the one eye not swollen shut looking wildly around. What he found was... skyler dross.[break][break]

"W-what..?" Healing water wrapped around the professor's mangled body, soothing his many wounds. "Captain Dross..?"[break][break]

His internal injuries had begun to heal first, a punctured lung the most dire of the lot. She'd saved his life, though he didn't realize it in the moment. [break][break]

Unfortunately, Skyler's medical attention would be cut short by the appearance of an enemy ROCKET - an especially theatrical one at that. Still unable to properly move, Gideon looked to his business partner for help. He'd seen the kind of talent angelo vestri had for battle.[break][break]

Did his wife have the same capability?

Backs pressed against each other, the professor managed to stammer out, "I'm alright– for now. But I'll likely need medical attention."[break][break]

He wasn't sure how many bones had been broken, but he suspected at least a few of his left orbital bones, his nose, perhaps a couple of ribs. Not to mention the bleeding lash on his back...[break][break]

Meanwhile, his DITTO began to TRANSFORM, their bright blue, gelatinous body undulating and morphing into... a heinous amalgamation of twisted limbs and stunted growth. Green and red and ugly, it writhed in the sand, semi-serpentine but useless in the heat of battle.[break][break]

"Damn it." Gideon cursed, returning Morpho to their Poké Ball; in the time this took, his TYRANITAR was overrun by oncoming attacks. PILOSWINE in particular charged forward, intending to ram the Amor Pokémon into the ground. TYRANITAR managed to grab hold of the swine's tusks and plants its feet, but struggled to keep its enemy at bay.[break][break]

"Volcarona - Struggle Bug!" Was Gideon's response to the attack, releasing the Sun Pokémon and hoping to at least distract the PILOSWINE so that TYRANITAR could unleash its SUPERPOWER.

"I guess you could say I was drafted more so than volunteered," Gideon responded on a shaky laugh, internally marveling at angelo vestri's confidence in battle. His experience seeped through his every action and command. It was impressive, to say the least.[break][break]

"My team and I were here doing routine population surveys," A rock lobbed his way was suddenly stalled by his SLOWKING's PSYCHIC and propelled back at the enemy. It had come dangerously close to crushing him and his rescuer, though. "FU– Arceus... Uh, I-I'm just glad they stayed behind in Dewford this morning."

The relief of release was short-lived. [break][break]

His hands now unfettered, Gideon tried his best to right himself and escape while the two strangers grappled desperately behind him. But, whether it was due to the shock or the pain, he couldn't muster the strength to immediately stand. [break][break]

"Proteus..." A shaky hand grasped for a capsule in his coat. "Come... here..." [break][break]

Through the smog, Gideon's SLOWKING appeared in a flash before him and... was clearly distressed by what he saw. Obvious concern lined the intelligent Pokémon's face as he waddled toward his trainer. The professor reached out and his SLOWKING grabbed hold, allowing himself to be used as a crutch as Gideon attempted to stand.[break][break]

"Away... we need to get away..."

Rumors of unusual Pokémon behavior had prompted the professor and a few of his colleagues to investigate. Gideon had made sure to bundle up, given that Shoal Cave was one of the few places the escaped Hoenn's typically tropical climate. Well, that and the Silent Icelands, now, too.

Scribe the ROTOM, inhabiting their usual tablet, hovered near the professor's shoulder. It was cocked sideways and recording the POLIWRATH as they boxed the pillars of ice. Around them their spawn (POLIWAG) waddled freely and even played in a nearby puddle of still-liquid water.

Thoughts so far...

He had many. Some more scholarly than others. Paramount among them was why angelo vestri was so interested in this eternal spark of Infinity Energy. It was incredible, to be sure. But what did he hope to achieve with any newfound knowledge brought on by their partnership?

Were his intentions pure? Or... was he affiliated with a more criminal element?

There was no way to tell at face value. Gideon would have to do his own digging into Angelo, Nautica, and their associates. Tentatively, though...
