The one eye not swollen shut scanned over Lydia Magnusson's ID, finding it to look authentic at first glance. It would be quite the forethought on ROCKET's part to have these prepared solely to trick LEAGUE civilians, so Gideon reasoned she must be legitimate.[break][break]

His body loosened somewhat, the previous rigidity giving way to uneasy trust.[break][break]

"...yes. Please."[break][break]

The injuries would likely look familiar to anyone in the military who'd seen combat. Blunt force trauma, caused by a combination of fists to his face and boots to his upper body. He'd tried to protect vital areas with his arms, causing them to be wounded as well. It had been a brutal beating. [break][break]

Adrenaline was the only thing that currently kept him upright.

Somehow, for the few minutes he'd spent talking with kyle lopez, Gideon had forgotten he was still in an active warzone. The guy just exuded a calmly aura or something.[break][break]

That all hit the fan once his HYPNO got sniped and a barrage of attacks started coming out of nowhere. Gideon didn't even think to join in the fray, instead taking Kyle up on his offer to lead them to safety.[break][break]

"R-right! I'll follow your lead!" The professor stammered, sticking to Kyle's shadow as they headed toward the outpost.

He wanted to scream, frustration and fear mixing into a toxic concoction within his body. It gripped at his heart, churned in his gut, held his legs fast in place.[break][break]

MEGAHORN slammed into Proteus, though the Royal Pokémon was able catch the horn between his hands as it did so. He gripped his opponent long enough to release a YAWN in its face.[break][break]

With his SLOWKING preoccupied battling it out with the ROCKET's NIDOKING, Gideon himself could only do so much. His left arm hung loosely at his side - a dislocated shoulder courtesy of Elisabeth Fiorelli. Adrenaline had burned through him and left his energy stores nearly depleted.[break][break]

"Stay... away.." The professor warned wearily, his one remaining usable hand twitching near his coat pocket, ready to release another Pokémon.

Gideon's battle 'skills' were very much affected, especially given that his left arm hung loosely at his side due to a dislocated shoulder. He'd never been in so much pain before; every moment was agony as his nerves signaled for reprieve that would not come – not yet, anyway. But Eva Morales gave him hope.[break][break]

"Got it. Just give the signal and I'll follow your lead." Blessedly, his legs hadn't fared the same fate as his arm. [break][break]

Focusing on the fight in front of him, Gideon noticed that his Pokémon were coping with the trauma of battle better than he'd have expected them to. [break][break]

TYRANITAR, especially, roared to life as it unleashed its SUPERPOWER - lifting the PILOWSWINE into the air by its tusks and hurling it into the side of Granite Cave. The huge pig attempted to right itself, but eventually passed out and was recalled by its ROCKET trainer.[break][break]

Unfortunately for VOLCARONA, the PILOSWINE had been able to get off a quick ANCIENT POWER before succumbing to its injuries, leaving the flame moth sputtering in the sand. Gideon quickly returned it to its Poké Ball and glanced at Eva, biding time before they made a run for it.

AGONY. Tormented screams echoed off the stone walls around them until he was finally released.[break][break]

Saliva then dripped to the cavern floor as the professor dry heaved into the dirt, his chest expanding and contracting rapidly while he tried desperately to pull oxygen into his injured body.[break][break]

"There's–" He gasped, fighting for words. [break][break]

"In the rift– huge, powerful Pokémon. I've never see– ah!" Gideon cut himself off as pain flared in his shoulder. [break][break]

"I-I've never seen anything like them before–!" [break][break]

Where fear had pervaded his countenance before, suffering bore a new emotion within GIDEON GRAVES: outrage. Hate sparked in his eyes as he glared up at his ROCKET captor.[break][break]

"That's all I know, alright? Surely even criminals like Rocket can manage to use that."

Flinching as the cough echoed through the cavern, Gideon whipped around to face whoever had made the cautionary noise. He expected the worst, as that was all he'd experienced up until this point. This entire ordeal had felt like a literal retelling of Dante's Inferno - each encounter worst than the last.[break][break]

To the professor's surprise, it was a semi-friendly face that was revealed beneath the helmet. Her canine companion appeared less so, but Gideon simply cast a weary glance its way before replying to the blonde-haired woman.[break][break]

"... Are you a League officer?" He probed, hesitant to immediately take her up on her offer. "I apologize for the skepticism, but..."[break][break]

A bone-deep weariness pervaded every word as he continued.[break][break]

"... I've run into trouble a few too many times to necessarily take you at your word." [break][break]

Something about his time in the Ultra Deep Sea and imprinted a deep paranoia within his psyche.

Toxic smog swirled around them as the transformed DITTO hoisted them both into the air. [break][break]

Gideon could only hold his breathe so much, however, before the effects of the poison burned through his lungs. He could barely contain the racking cough that followed them throughout their aerial escape.[break][break]

Luckily his new mount was having a marginally easier time of things.[break][break]

It saw the AIR SLASH coming and pivoted out of the way. Not used to riding on the backs of Pokémon, Gideon desperately clung to the fake CHARIZARD's neck as it sped ahead.

Somehow, luck had been on his side in this encounter. As the ROCKET combatant succumbed to her slumber, Gideon watched tensely in the distance. [break][break]

His chest heaved with the exertion and adrenaline brought on by the heat of battle. The effort had reopened a few of his injuries, causing blood to further stain his clothes.[break][break]

But he was free. From her, at least. For now.[break][break]

How to escape, though? Where was the exit? A part of him, dark and primal, wondered if he could take advantage of the situation and force the ROCKET to tell him how to escape.[break][break]

He lingered there, on the periphery, hesitant in his decision.

Gideon had not been expecting that response from kyle lopez. The furrow in his brow deepened as he delved further into his thoughts.[break][break]

When myth mixed with reality, the resulting uncertainty almost always bred chaos. Any small amount of power linked to the supernatural seemed to draw out the worst sorts of people, even if it wasn't guaranteed.[break][break]

Wars had been started for less – obviously.[break][break]

"... Hmm, not much, admittedly. Anthropologically speaking, Arceus is deeply rooted in the creation myth of several religions."[break][break]

Gideon exhaled deeply as he parsed through the thoughts running through his mind.[break][break]

"Some texts describe the Plates as having inscriptions penned directly from the god itself, others that they represent the very forces of nature that Arceus had created."[break][break]

His eyes flicked back upwards to meet the champion's own.[break][break]

"Whatever the case may be, you're right, it certainly wouldn't be good if it fell in Rocket's hands."

It was a relief to hear that his team was likely safe despite the dire circumstances. Angelo's offered help even more so.[break][break]

Seeing the tides of battle shifting, the ROCKET grunts called on reinforcements to help push back against angelo vestri. [break][break]

SLOWKING was KO'd by an errant THUNDERBOLT and subsequently recalled back into his Poké Ball. To make matters worse, they also succeeded in dividing GIDEON GRAVES from his rescuer with a strong BLIZZARD courtesy of a floating GLALIE, which pushed the professor further back into the cavern.[break][break]

Closer to the rift, which was suddenly exuding a suction force.[break][break]

Gideon barely had time to react. A hand reached out, desperate.[break][break]

"Ang–!"[break][break]

But he was gone.

Fingers tightened around ollie morales' hand as Gideon was tugged away from the... damn, admittedly fascinating creature. One minute it was corporeal, the other not. It possessed some sort of vagrant tangibility. [break][break]

Curiosity getting the best of him, the professor couldn't help but look over his shoulder and gawk at the thing while Ollie pulled them along. He was in awe.[break][break]

"What sort of beast is that?"[break][break]

THUNDER WAVE had barely stalled it for long. SLUDGE WAVE had a similar effect, the viscous poison slicking off its dense tufts of fur like water off a raincoat.[break][break]

He needed time to gather his faculties. Life had yet to return to GIDEON GRAVES's extremities, rendering him useless in the impending fight between skyler dross and this ROCKET combatant. [break][break]

Still, he appreciated the care she took in propping him up. The reassuring pat to his shoulder was nice, too. Even small gestures in hell stood out tenfold.[break][break]

"I'm... alright." He winced. "Take your time." Hopefully she didn't, though.[break][break]

The shadow overhead made Gideon think the captain wouldn't be long, anyway. What kind of creature is that?[break][break]

Also, did water just appear behind the ROCKET? Out of thin air? Is this realm playing tricks on me?

He was in dire need of medical supplies to triage the many injuries that now covered his body after run-ins with several ROCKET operatives.[break][break]

Rummaging through one crate, the professor found IV fluids, gauze, bandages, tourniquets. Typical combat medical equipment. With a shaky hand, he grabbed a package of alcohol swabs first, thinking it best to try and clean his wounds.
