Unfortunately, even though their Pokémon defeated the abomination that had manifested within the chamber, the other effects of Ultra Deep Sea took hold. Gunner's hands shook from the paranoia and fear settling within him. He cried out when he noticed that his arms had begun to transform, growing scales like a sea Pokémon's.[break][break]

"We're leaving," he said to Yuina, who looked just as ready to depart.[break][break]

Unfortunately, they had mined too much to carry between them. Gunner didn't care. He could come back another time, with other people. After recalling his Iron Valiant into a Pokéball, he released his Alakazam so they could teleport back to the rift.[break][break]

While they worked, Gunner kept an eye on the entrance to the cavern. Sure enough, the noise of the mining machines attracted Ultra Beasts. Thankfully, Lamorak's WIDE GUARD held. The two men were able to focus on their task without worry about physical threats.[break][break]

The mental and emotional threats, however, came as Gunner expected. The nausea hit him first, then the anxiety. Sweat poured down his face as his fears deepened, there in the dark heart of the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]

"Hopefully it's worth something," he murmured, more skeptical than Derek. "Just a little bit more and we should be able to head back."[break][break]

Gunner grimaced as a wave of nausea hit him, but he walked over to where Illeana was working. A few of the glittering minerals had fallen to the ground at her feet. He scooped them up and deposited them with care into a satchel they'd brought.[break][break]

"I'm okay," he lied. "I can handle a bit more—"[break][break]

All around them, the Poison Tera crystals flashed with an eerie, sickly light. Then images emerged from them, a hazy at first but growing sharper with every passing moment: the poisoned, battle-wounded bodies of Galarian peasantry.[break][break]

Gunner shuddered as they turned and began staggering toward them. "We need to hurry," he said, snatching up more gems from the ground. "Kahadin, can you do something about these?"[break][break]

His Iron Valiant leapt at the manifestations, attacking them with PSYCHO CUT.[break][break]

You must escape with your gathered material. Your ally or allies may be incapacitated by the paranoia settling in their psyches, or perhaps, the eldritch mutations beginning to metamorphose their body or bodies.[break][break]

Depending on how much your characters have mined, you may need to lessen your extracted load to ensure successful escape from this wretched place. After all, the horrors that reside here may make chase.

Yuina fell silent. Their Pokémon chased back the Nihilego, and then the two humans set to work, mining the materials within the cavern. Gunner did not mind the silence; as an introvert, he was quite used to it. In fact, he preferred it.[break][break]

However, a disturbance soon drew his attention away from the machines. A strange amalgamation of Alakazam and Alolan Marowak had manifested. Yuina's Pokémon — a Hisuian Typhlosion, Gunner noticed — was already attacking.[break][break]

"Go help them, Kahadin," he instructed his Iron Valiant.[break][break]

The Paradox Pokémon jumped into the fray, attacking the abomination with NIGHT SLASH.[break][break]

He looked down at Mila and, for the first time that night, noticed their closeness. Unconsciously, he leaned his cheek against the palm of her hand. He turned his wrist that her other hand caressed and laced their fingers together.[break][break]

"I'm just glad it's over now," Gunner murmured. In the quiet of those woods, surrounded by the ethereal glow of fireflies, he felt compelled to keep his voice low.[break][break]

His face lowered toward Mila's in silent request.

Gunner laughed as Angelo revealed his true motivation. "Aha. Well, happy to be your guinea pig, but you get to deal with my brutally honest opinion if it tastes like shit."[break][break]

He moved to the cooler and removed the lid. Sure enough, pre-shaped patties of thawing minced beef were packed in plastic amid heaps of ice cubes. He pulled two out and handed them off to Angelo.[break][break]

"Medium rare, of course," Gunner said, feeling like it should be obvious. His smile faltered.[break][break]

Why should it be obvious?[break][break]

While Angelo dealt with the meat, Gunner turned his attention to the other burger ingredients. He glanced over his shoulder to check on their Pokémon, then took another swig of beer and started unwrapping the buns.[break][break]

"So how have you been? I feel like I haven't talked to you in ages." He did not voice the but… that sat on the tip of his tongue.

Gunner hesitated, unsure how honest he should be with Mila. It probably wasn't a good idea to mention Summer Atreides or the tumultuous events of their relationship that he was sure happened over the span of twenty years. And anyway, that was all in the past.[break][break]

"It was sad," he said at last. "We were at war, and a lot of people died. People I feel like I knew and loved." A troubled smile marred his handsome face as he paused. "I think Gideon was in my dream at some point, but I don't remember much."[break][break]

By that point, Gunner and Mila had ventured so deep into the woods that the sounds of the festival had been reduced to a muted buzz, a small reminder they weren't actually that far from civilization.[break][break]

A swarm of Ledian came awake, glowing with soft light that brought an ethereal atmosphere to the forest.[break][break]

"I don't think it was all a dream," Gunner continued, still frowning. "There were powerful Pokémon present, like the same Necrozma that attacked Sootopolis last summer. I don't know how possible it is for Pokémon to manipulate… that sort of thing, but I wouldn't be surprised."[break][break]

Unconsciously, he hugged Mila closer.

"If you have digital copies of those pictures, can you have them emailed to me?" Gunner asked. "I'll include them in my report to my superiors. The more data you have to present, the better."[break][break]

Then he stood from his chair, unsure if there was anything else Dewford's sheriff had to say or show him regarding the matter.[break][break]

"I'll update you as soon as I hear word, but you know how the League is." His half-cocked smile grew wider and more rueful.
