As Illeana began to mine, Gunner kept watch with his Iron Valiant — an action he found difficult to do, as the vast expanse of starry space opened up to him at intervals. He shook his head often, struggling to concentrate.[break][break]

It was strange. He never had this much trouble before. Was it the radiation?[break][break]

Only when the hostile Pokémon began to appear did he snap to laser-focused attention. Sharp commands sent Kahadin forward, striking them down as quickly as possible to protect the chamber.[break][break]

"How are you doing, Dr. Reyes? Need a hand?" Gunner called out as sweat poured down his forehead. Between the adrenaline of the battle and the radiation bearing down on him, his head was starting to ache.

Gunner grimaced as he entered the chamber deep in the heart of the Ultra Deep Sea. He did not enjoy being surrounded by the fleshy, organ-like structures that made up the realm. They reminded him all too vividly of the reports that suggested this other world was actually the inside of a gigantic creature.[break][break]

The sight of someone else in the chamber, however, drew him from those unsavory thoughts. Eyes narrowing, he approached with slow, cautious steps. And then, all at once, he recognized the other man.[break][break]

"It's you," Gunner said, eyebrows rising into his forehead in surprise. "Didn't I tell you to stay out of this place? Step back; this area's dangerous."

Gunner had not visited it since the fateful battle in April. And though several months had passed, he still felt the bitterness of the League's loss at the hands of Team Rocket as he trudged through the realm.[break][break]

But the criminals had not found this chamber. Gunner braced himself against the energies that pulsated from the strange minerals and Tera crystals embedded in the flesh-like walls of the space.[break][break]

"I'll act as our shield here," the agent said to his companion, none other than Dr. illeana reyes. He released his Iron Valiant from a Pokéball. "Kahadin, set up a WIDE GUARD around us."[break][break]

Mention of the Sygna Suit prompted Gunner to raise an eyebrow, impressed that Navy had already started the process of acquiring one. In contrast, the agent hadn't even started filling out the first documents for himself.[break][break]

"I'll bring that up, too."[break][break]

A new folder appeared in front of Gunner, this time showing grotesque mutations of Pokémon who should have been dead. He frowned. One of them looked similar to the Lickilicky he'd borrowed from a dead operative.[break][break]

The Pokémon had given its life to ensure Gunner's survival out of the hellscape that Granite Cave had become.[break][break]

"What defenses do you have set up already?" he asked Navy, looking up from the photographs. "And what about the Rangers from other cities and towns? I heard Oldale has a new Ranger Captain. Can they spare some bodies?"

The waitress stopped by their table bearing their milkshakes and waters. Gunner took advantage of the interruption to taste his chocolate shake. The right amount of sweetness and flavor washed over his tongue — perfect for a greasy dinner.[break][break]

"You owned a pub," he said matter-of-factly. "I can't remember the details of it, but it had cozy lighting and a lot of seating. And you were behind the bar, pouring drinks."[break][break]

He tilted his head at Serena, trying to think back on all the files he'd read about her. Dreams typically drew on information the brain consumed during the day, even if the events of the dream were more fantastical than reality.[break][break]

More and more, Penelope seemed prone to outbursts like this one. Gunner had grown to understand that her questions were rhetorical, not asked for want of an answer but as a way to vent the woman's frustrations.[break][break]

Still digging through the filing cabinet, Gunner did not notice anything else that might have been happening around Penelope.[break][break]

"Mr. del Mar must have known people would sniff around this place one day," he mused aloud. "He probably had it cleaned out of any incriminating evidence."[break][break]

Gunner shut the cabinet drawer with a loud, clattering thud.[break][break]

"We could maybe search his old penthouse in Mauville Hills," he suggested, finally turning to look over at his boss. "Though I doubt the landlord or new tenant would know anything."

At the question about legal advice, Gunner chuckled and shook his head. "Sorry, but I'm not allowed to give any. That's what lawyers are for," he said.[break][break]

Technically, he had graduated law school and he still had a strong understanding of the law, even after so many years. All that kept him from practicing law was taking the bar exam. Whether he could pass it after all this time was another story.[break][break]
