For a guy who seems to pride himself on being rough around the edges, Montgomery is quick to volunteer for these gigs. It makes Navy smile. The Sheriff has been hovering near the edge of the group, watching the distant ghosts fade in and out of existence. None yet approach, especially given the Pokemon he has out on patrol.[break][break]
“If it ain’t one thing, it’s another. Been telling people for a year Sea Mauville needs some serious work.” It almost collapsed when Kyogre first went on its rampage. Before then, it was filled to the brim with ghost Pokemon and hallways that gave way to rust. Navy sees what they deal with today as simply an overstretched government reaping what it sows.[break][break]
“Thank you all for your cooperation.” Navy smiles at the crowd of folks boarding the boats. “Deputy James wants y’all to know that he’ll take on all comers at the arcade tonight if you guys mind your manners.” That placates the children, who whisper among themselves about how anyone could hope to beat Montgomery in an arcade shootout.

It’s a good duck. Ripper is well-trained. Everyone from the sheriff to the casual onlookers around them can see that. Arthur, too, can see that. He sees the punch coming through Navy’s eyes just as Navy feels the urge to weave away.[break][break]
Ripper’s claws find purchase, though not against golden scales. The two hits sink into a substitute, placed between Ripper and Arthur. It buys the dragon prince space with which to think and wind up his fist.

“Make a barrier.” Navy instructs his shinobi, though he speaks the words more for Thomas’s sake than Hattori’s. Hattori is already on the case. While Thomas sends out his squad to attack, Hattori’s maw opens and an ice beam shoots out. It freezes a solid wall of ice beneath the water, keeping the Remoraid safe from the Sharpedo. Prolonged exposure to the cold won’t be good for their health, but they can handle it for now until the Sharpedo are dealt with.[break][break]

Those are concerns for another day. Tiny’s chirps grow frantic, an attempt to get his owner’s attention. The light cast by his Skarmory flashes to the green below. There’s blood in the water, and just now there is movement above them. Quiet, frantic movement grows louder and louder as time passes.[break][break]
“Think we’re good for now.” He insists. “Let’s get back. No more trips like this for now.”

“Mayor, huh?” Despite the oppression all around, he finds occasion to laugh. It’s a strangely human word to speak, here in the deep. “Don’t think I’m ready for a political career yet.” Yet, as of late, seems to be the operative part of that sentence. Taking note of the machine on which Airi ride, he urges Valkyrie forward, out into the open expanse.[break][break]
They make a brief pitstop in a grotto, a rare spot of light in the primordial sea. Other rangers and deputies, brave souls who patrol the deep, regard them, supply them, and wish them well. This place was made when Navy first explored the deep sea with Colton Boothroyd and Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, still saving lost souls. It’s some solace in the darkness as he presses on.[break][break]
Voices whisper in their minds as they venture deeper. It’s old scar tissue at this point for Navy. The voices whisper about how he wasn’t enough, about how he is no fit husband, no fit warrior, no fit brother. They tell him that he comes down here to die, and that those in power would not long mourn his passing. They whisper of what once was and what could be, if he would only give in to his red rage.[break][break]
Gunshots break the silence. The shot reveals the strange truth of his weapon. A length of chain, like a Dhelmise’s anchor shot, trails from the weapon out to something hiding in the darkness. A high-pitched scream cuts through the darkness. Writhing within the chains is a long-dead Sableye, animated by this place and its strange ways. Its body, half taken by rot and half mutated to look like coral, writhes. Hattori offers the Pokemon the gift of mercy at the end of his kunai before returning to Navy’s side.[break][break]
“We’ve still got a long way to go.” Says the Sheriff, his lungs burning like they’re drowning. “Across this open place, over the valley, past the downed ships.” He stops himself and grins like a man on the gallows. “Oh yeah. There’s crashed alien ships down here.”

As they speak, he pulls himself off the debris. It’s slow, painful going. His powers afford him the burden of knowledge. Every tiny scrap of metal that breaks off into his body as the main spike undergoes its journey is known to him. His teeth grind together in pain, but he works at it with a monk’s steady hands.[break][break]
Were it not for his oath, he would be dead. What a death. Navy, killed in an explosion. No fitting death for a warrior. Better to die on some battlefield in a burning tomorrow.[break][break]
“I’m good.” He lies, though he doubts she will find him in time to see it is a lie. Her voice steadies him, gives him something to think about besides his task. “Think it’s some kind of accountant’s office. Must’ve been an Electrode.” It seems as good an explanation as any. “Or some ghost. Hell if I know.” He forgets to play the part of a gentleman as, at last, he comes free.[break][break]
His body already heals. Wounds stitch themselves shut. His eye reforms in its socket. Burned flesh becomes whole.[break][break]
Areceus. The powers frighten him. How easy it would be to forget mortality.[break][break]
“I’m gonna try to make my way to you. Think that’d be…south.” Stumbling out of the blasted room, he turns, body only three-fourths of the way back to normal, and he limps down the hell, Hattori in his shadow.

Tiny hums. He hums for no other reason than he wishes to do so. He hums because light and mirth and sound are good, brief as such things are in the face of unending black. He hums because to cease his tune is to cease being alive. Like all who are young, he is full to the brim with life, oblivious to the cruelties it will inflict upon him.[break][break]
He casts a spotlight upon the chamber into which they step. Where once there was darkness, they now can see. It is not just hypothesis but fact that Eternatus digests. Some great gargantuan creature, perhaps once a Buzzwole, lists into the green mire.[break][break]
“How in the world do you know what it’s like to be poisoned by cyanide?” He asks. Not even Rocket would stoop that low, or so the man thinks. “Wish we had a few wheelbarrows full of the stuff right now. Wouldn’t that be a way to kill a god?”[break][break]
Flesh contracts around them in quick contractions, as if laughing at Navy’s words. It carries the cadence of condescension. Mortals are quick to anthropomorphize that which they do not understand. [break][break]
“This place gives me the creeps.”

And behold, a light shines in the darkness. This is not a place for children, but Navy cannot escape Tiny. True to its name, the Skarmory is but a small thing, barely big enough to fly and leave the nest. It chirps here, down in the black abyss, oblivious to the danger. His wings glow, illuminating the path forward brighter and gentler than any lantern.[break][break]
One last trip with her. One last question he never thought to ask himself: does Eternatus eat? Can he, if he finds a stomach, starve his great enemy? Would this undying beast, so far removed from the concept of death that eternity draws His name from the well of its power, even care if He starved? Navy does not know. All he knows is that Eris is strong, and it distracts them both to be here rather than above.[break][break]

“Are you holding up alright?” The man asks the child. “Takes a while to get used to, that sense that you’re drowning even when you’re pullin’ air into your lungs.”

“Take some free advice: don’t ever get a job at Ever Grande. All you’re ever gonna meet’re suits.” His tone, playful but deeply bitter just beneath, tells her all she needs to know about that. Though she can’t see it, it’s accompanied by one of those soldier’s grins, the sort a man smiles when he’s in the trenches and he knows he can be nowhere else.[break][break]
The expression dies upon her words.[break][break]
“Right-” The heat hits him before anything. He feels his body tear beneath him, clothes ripping. What lies beneath is only so much meat and matter. Flesh is weak. Flesh can be ripped. It burns, and he feels part of himself melt as he is tossed clear across the room.[break][break]
Impalement upon freshly torn metal stops him. To anyone who might see him, he looks like a fresh corpse. Half his face is burned, an eye melts. Navy, or Michael, or the Warrior, seems nothing but a corpse.[break][break]
Yet, he stirs. He coughs. He still sees from one eye. Some part of him understands for the first time just how deep a certain vow he has made goes. When his eye still scans the room, when he can still manage to whistle out an order, he does not even think to be unnerved.[break][break]
Hattori appears, fighting the fires with his shuriken until he turns and sees the sorry state of his Lord. His work is abandoned and he rushes to the man’s side like one who sees their heart scattered across a far wall.[break][break]

There is no sun beneath the sea. Light is a foreign friend, filtered down from high above down into pulsing darkness and wide expanses. Here swim dead things, who live forever in the eternal embrace of a slumbering god.[break][break]
It is not like their journeys into a power spot. Those places are still of this world, still bound by human logic. Their souls still feel that old instinct there, deep down, that everything will be alright.[break][break]
Not so here. Here, there is pressure upon their chests. Breathing is hard, their lungs pulling with the effort of old kings rolling boulders up hills just to do it all again and again. Navy does not dampen the effects yet, though he could. His sygna suit remains inactive. This is not the time. He would suffer as he has consigned Airi to suffer, at least until the Warrior is called to play his part before the grand gnostic choir.[break][break]
When they step through the rift beneath the rubble, one step carries them across lightyears. Sand flutters beneath their boots, rustled by their steps, casting up as if disturbed upon the ocean floor. Navy pulls out a pokeball and summons Valkyrie, first and truest of his steeds. Scholars of antiquity call her Spectrier. Navy calls her friend, and forlorn hope in the dark places of the world.[break][break]
“It only gets worse.” Says the Pale Rider, here in the bowels of his enemy, with whom he shared a great journey. “Mount up your Pokemon. We’ve got a long way to go.” Along the side of his saddle is an antiquated firearm, something between a blunderbuss and a long revolver. The Rider checks it, looking down the sights before returning it to its proper place.[break][break]
“You’re gonna start to feel paranoid, the deeper we go in. There’s a rule I tell the deputies when I first bring ‘em here. Don’t go deeper than you absolutely have to. We’re gonna break that rule today, ‘cause we’re going as deep as we can go.” His eyes cast up, looking at the distant light of angels far above them, glowing while they observe the humans. They do not approach, for they know the measure of this human.[break][break]
He urges his steed on, and starts to ride.

Mine’s Silver Bullet.” He moves to Silver Bullet, presses his foot into the stirrup, and steps up in one fluid motion. It’s something born of practice. He moves into the saddle like someone born to sit there, though in truth it is a skill born of long, long experience.[break][break]
“If you need help, I can boost you.” Some might call that condescension, but his voice carries renewed severity. Scanning the horizon. He knows it will not be long before they’re set upon again. Best to be on the road by then. Dragonslayer hovers behind Navy, clinging to his back like some supermassive heroic sword of antiquity.
