Gwyar’s exasperation makes him smile. Navy has been on the other side of this sword many a time, so he understands his fellow’s frustration. Following the knight inside, he takes off his poncho and hat. Beneath, forming a lightning shaped bald spot along the center of his hairline, is a grievous scar from an old battle. It traces from front to back, marring an otherwise luxurious mop of brown hair, and Navy scratches at it in unconscious embarrassment.[break][break]
They have bigger concerns than old wounds. Navy exhales, not protesting at the request. He sits, and he does something he rarely does anymore: he sits alone with himself.[break][break]
See him as he is, a man cast between two worlds. Vipers snake through both, though one side makes no secret of their scales.[break][break]
Exhale.[break][break]
His paradise is Valhalla. His favorite taste is that of blood, washed down by mead and the taste of a woman’s lips he has earned through strength. That is his world, a place just for him. It is hot like this place. The fingers of his mind’s eye play at gripping a sword. It cuts through this place, denying that which makes him happy.[break][break]
Navy closes his eyes, better to focus.[break][break]
He sits in the slumbering weald. Forgotten is the heat. There is only purpose. What separates a knight from a warrior? Purpose. His sword does not swing for the luxury of glory. It swings for the survival of nations and for the comfort of loved ones. He looks down and sees his own arms. Where there should be flesh is instead simple steel. He himself is a sword. It forms from energy, from the air, from his flesh and from his blood. It comes from old memories he did not know he knew.[break][break]
“…huh…” The sound is somewhere between long, warm sigh and eureka.

From the gloom steps a tall wolf. Her golden eyes are draped in shadow, like her very fur serves as helmet and armor both. She dwarfs Voyager, who trots around her excitedly. He has already decided she is his new friend, rubbing up against her. Zacian hardly acknowledges he is there at all. Uncrowned, Ascalon along her back, she waits for them to step outside and greet her.[break][break]
“Figured she wouldn’t wait once she realized I was out.”

All the same, even as her teeth are shorn from her mouth and blood splatters across the ground, she laughs. It is a rare crack in a stoic mask, a hint of the girl who once was and shall never be again, a ghost of one long dead.[break][break]
She smiles, as much as a wolf may smile. Keldeo’s retaliation proves true and she dips her head in acknowledgement of the effort. It is not defeat, for she has not been defeated, but she knows pain when it comes. Through the oath shared with the Warrior, her teeth begin to regrow in her mouth. “Looks like you guys are having fun.” Another voice says. Her sworn brother arrives, all smiles himself. “Looks like she got started without me. So. Josh, Keldeo, how d’you two like Zacian?”

Perhaps it is the silent gaze of the glacial steed or the soothing song of the Blissey, but the ghosts back away. Their eyes droop, and they disappear. A quiet prayer is murmured, covered by the roar of the folk on the sled. All that’s left is to keep going, and the Warrior endeavors to play his part. Slow Dancer plods along, leaving space for Airi and her Pokemon to follow.[break][break]
“Didn’t know you had a Blissey.” He smiles a sad smile. “My brother had one of those.” What he leaves unsaid is how Flora died, burned black beneath the earth by one who should have been an ally. She died for nothing, and he prays that Airi’s Blissey meets a kinder fate.[break][break]
All the trouble’s been handled. It’s just a matter of keeping on the course they have both charted. Slow Dancer freezes the water with every step. Navy can see how this, too, would be a steed worthy of the High King. Though it is nowhere as swift as Valkyrie, the destrier makes up for it in his sheer stamina and capacity to forge a path where there wasn’t one before.[break][break]
“Arceus, you’ve got a good team. Surprised Ollie hasn’t made you a captain. I’d sleep easier knowing one of Hoenn’s towns had you protecting ‘em.”

If he feels any fear at the sight of the monolithic abyss called the heart mother, he does not betray it to his own liege lord or his foe. “But they’re gonna study you. They’re gonna know your tricks. They’ll come at you with everything they have. Not just ‘cause you’re strong, but ‘cause you’re my heart.” And a body without a heart ceases to live. He knows this pain well between Gabe and Melody, and Rocket knows that pain is within him.[break][break]
Roland too knows that pain. He has fought giants before. He fought them beneath the earth in the caress of a slumbering god. As the beam comes down upon him, he hears the sound of a ball whirring through the air. Navy’s aim is perfect. Roland peers into a thousand worlds, innumerable as the stars in the sky. He gazes into things long dead and things not yet born. Miracles, impossibilities, and the cancerous growth of terastallized crystals coalesce into a supermassive crown atop the warrior’s head. Upon his head is a turtle, revolving around these many worlds. Roland is a galaxy unto himself.[break][break]
He rises, and he strikes. His aim is perfect. He sees a world where his aim leads him astray and ignores them in favor of those where his blade strikes true. A ghost haunts him as well, a fallen brother, and he channels that brother’s strength through his blade. The psycho cut streaks across the moonlight as he soars, right up to the belly of the beast.

“…smart…” He says, though the word is hard fought, strained, distant. Human speech, at least with any coherency, is hard for those whose souls sing with dragonsong. Even a noble dragon like Arthur demands battle. It is his nature to fight, and so he moves forward. Navy feels the curious sensation of his own limbs moving though he stands still. He sees Anna as though she were upon him, though he stands back a mere bystander.[break][break]
It feels like his own fist is flying through the air as the thunder punch flies towards Anna, a quick jab made quicker by the exhilaration of both halves of this twin soul. He feels the inevitable pain that comes as if it were his own when she plays rough, fang meeting fist. Another ball shakes at his hip, wanting to be let out. A flick of his finger against the ball makes it stop, for now. This is not a battlefield meant for the black dragon. They play at war, they do not fight truly.[break][break]
This battle is becoming a losing proposition. That is good. Ettie is more than proving themselves, just as they did in the long ago and never-was of Galar. He wonders if time will temper her into the same sort of person she was there. If the strength of her pack serves as any example, he thinks she will.[break][break]
Where are the others? He manages to think, looking across the battlefield and seeing Leviathan’s cover being blown. His water dragon is exposed, but he is not fighting alone. Though some part of him is unnerved by the Granbull’s face, he steels himself and returns fire upon Graci with a dragon pulse. From behind, Grendel slams into the Shaymin with extreme speed, slamming to from behind in a hoot of triumph.

Their work is urgent, quick, but Navy is good at talking while he works. “See anything on your end? It’s mostly just accounting stuff up here.”

Oil fires do not drown lightly, but they bow before the shinobi’s will. Their path to the Remoraid habitat is open. It comes not a moment too soon, considering there seems to be Sharpedo fins above the water on the horizon.[break][break]
“Arbok Nine, huh Tom?” Navy grins. “Kinda like the idea that Rocket knows it’s me if they’re ballsy enough to tap our comms lines, you know?” He urges his Kingdra on with all due haste, lest the Sharpedo beat them there.

Roland stands unblinking on his side of the pitch. Other Iron Valiants favor a double-sided blade, but not he. His has but one blade, and its edge is razor sharp. Upon hearing the words exchanged by the other human and his liege lord, the blade is drawn and held in a fencer’s salute. This region demands much of those who would be here. Whether he faces a black knight or a white knight, a knight is still a knight. A knight protects.[break][break]
Only when he moves forward does he seem to be more than a statue, some macabre postmodern art piece. His movements are smooth in a way only a machine could be smooth, liquid, water flowing upon the river. Electricity sparks from his core, the engine inside whirring to life.[break][break]
“Looks like Roland’s raring to go!” Calls Navy, still smiling. “Get your quark drive going.” It must seem a strange command, though Roland obeys at once. Sparks turn to a thunderstorm as the electricity building within him spreads out, making the hairs of bystanders stand on end. Static electricity surges through the field. They fight within an electric terrain.[break][break]
It leaves him exposed, as it takes singular concentration to set the field properly. Setting it wrong will harm others, and he has sworn to protect these folk. All he can do is wait and see what his foe will do.[break][break]
“They have guys like Roland in Paldea, Silv?” Were it not for Paldea having its own Area Zero, it would seem a foolish question. Hoenn’s version of the place spawns paradox Pokemon daily. Perhaps Paldea’s is the same, and that is why they guard that place so closely.

After Ascalon disappears from Navy’s hand, returning to the aether, it seems a much more genuine smile. Kicking up, he downs his tankard, wipes his beard, and sets off back outside. The breeze feels nice. Summer’s upon them, and with it is the promise of warmth.[break][break]
“Don’t blame yourself for not bein’ there. Nobody can be everywhere at once. Arceus knows havin’ you around helps a ton, man.” People walking by see Navy and Montgomery talk. The people of this town, folk as warm as Hoenn’s summers, wave at them and smile. They’re good folk, even if the rest of the region pays them no mind.[break][break]
“As for these kids, I dunno. We just found ‘em.” Tiny lands on Navy’s shoulder. Skarmories grow up fast. In a few short months, the baby bird will be big enough to ride. For now, Navy strokes the chick under his beak and it smiles up at him. “Can’t deny they’re pretty, huh?”[break][break]
Navy’s eyes drift up to the mountain at the center of the island. Since the battle, mists have covered its expanse. The mist serves as a warning to Rocket: the island has a new protector. Come at their own peril.[break][break]
“The war’s probably ‘bout to kick off. You’re a cop, not a soldier, but the League needs all the help it can get. You gonna stay here and protect Dewford or are you going to volunteer for the Sootopolis assault?”

Never really thought about it before. Even someone from another region should know, but he decides not to dwell on it when there’s so much more to discuss.[break][break]
“’Bout six years ago, or it will be in November. Not many of ‘em wore masks, for one thing. The uniform’s different, but I don’t think that’s worth dwellin’ on. declan walsh and SILAS BLACKWELL just have different tastes in fashion.” Truth be told, he doesn’t know if it’s the bosses or someone under them who dictates the uniforms. It doesn’t much matter, he decides.[break][break]
“But you’re right to ask questions. Even if Councilman Silph disagrees, real loyalty ain’t blind. You’re a ranger, so you’re not gonna have much authority to investigate somethin’ like this. Suppose there’s really a conspiracy. You’d do everything in your power to shut out anyone trying to get to the bottom of it.” For much of what he says, Navy sorts through his own papers, which reveal little Yuina would not already know. Dewford has enough of its own problems and Navy is but one man. He hasn’t had time to investigate, and no one has brought the matter to his attention before. His eyes finally lift, meeting Yuina’s.[break][break]
“And you need to understand this: if we’re right, and something’s fishy ‘bout this, chances are whoever’s behind it would kill to keep this covered up. Sounds like blood’s already on their hands.”

Hattori sits behind him, holding the rope and securing it around Slow Dancer’s robust waist. Luckily, there’s enough rope for it to not be a problem. A gentle squeeze of his boot against Slow Dancer urges the beast onward.[break][break]
“Alright, folks.” Navy tips his hat to the people trapped there. “Everyone onto the sled, just like the lady said. We’ll have you out of here in no time.” No one protests. They trust in the words of the Fighting Master and sit upon the sled. With a huff and a sharp exhale, Slow Dancer sets off, back towards safety.[break][break]
“And thank Arceus you’re here to cover us, Airi. Think the ghosts are starting to get antsy.” All around them, shadows begin to manifest into Gastlies and even a Spiritomb. All of them offer malevolent smiles, though none yet attack. They see too many battle-hardened Pokemon to attack willy-nilly, even if the air is thick with anxiety.[break][break]
“Don’t mind them, folks. Airi’s got us. We’re in good hands.”
