Rumors have a way of spreading. Many of them are false, especially where the town’s sheriff and outsiders are concerned. Someone saw a handsome Paldean ranger, looked to the person next to them, and said Woah, I think that guy’s a champion rank trainer. While Navy and the newcomer did a boring routine of work, just rounding up some stray Pokemon displaced by the recent troubles, half of his town talked themselves into the two having an exhibition match.[break][break]
That’s how he comes to stand opposite silverio delfino on a seaside battle pitch, just outside his old gym. Everyone’s excited, and for that he is thankful. With so much strife across this war-torn region, Navy is thankful to this stranger for providing everyone a distraction. It will not bring back the dead, nor will it make reconstruction go any quicker, but it will give them a tale to tell each other.[break][break]
“Alright, Silverio. You mind if I call you Silver?” He smiles, remembering a trainer from an old movie with that name. “How’s a one on one match sound to you? I’ll be using this guy.” The crowd parts to allow a silent machine to pass. Roland is what scientists call an Iron Valiant. Though his machine soldier is valiant, he much prefers Roland.[break][break]

Chrome contrasts with paint splattered across his body. Roland’s colors affect the image of a Gardevoir undergoing mega evolution. The colors were the machine’s choice, a homage to a brother lost in a hellish place. With the one arm left to him, the iron knight draws his sword and holds it out, ready to face whatever creature Silverio throws out.

Business brings them together not in the bowels of a power spot but on a path leading up the mountain at the center of Dewford island. A light mist covers the ground, as it covers much of the island ever since the battle in late May. Navy hikes up along with Airi, thankful she would come here on her day off. It’s a hard thing he means to ask her to do.[break][break]
“You’ve been doing really good with all the rescue ops, Airi. You can handle yourself real well.” Talent is a rare enough thing. It deserves to be admired, and rewarded. Though he is not her superior, he can offer her one thing even ollie morales can’t.[break][break]
“You remember the battle with Kyurem back in January, yeah? Right after the new year? Well, I caught somethin’ back then. I don’t really have room for it on my team, and I think you might be the rare kind of person who can make this Pokemon obey you.”
There’s more than one legend that calls Dewford home. He remembers the circumstances under which he met this deadly killing machine the scientists call Iron Leaves. When it and a hundred clones just like it all spawned in the bowels of the Great Chasm, they took the lives of many good men and women.[break][break]
A whistle calls the machine’s attention onto them. It walks out of the woods, just off the path, looking at both of them with a robot’s passive gaze.[break][break]

Dewford is in shambles. Gods do not suffer manmade buildings to stand, should they get in their way. Much of the town has been devastated. The one blessing, as Navy sees it, is that there were few deaths, relatively speaking. Even still, the property damage is immense.[break][break]
Ice clings to the roads and all the way out to sea. Ice, in early June. Large gashes of discoloration dot the landscape. Scorch marks mark the roads and the beaches alike, signaling where mighty Pokemon leveled attacks at their even mightier foe. The places where Dynamax Pokemon grew to near ten times their normal size are practically radioactive wastelands. Beside them sit the bodies of Nihilego, their neurotoxins still dripping and sizzling along the ground.[break][break]
“Told you guys it’d be a tough job.” Sheriff Navidson says, walking between the other two men. Mist seems to always accompany him. It laps at the sheriff’s heels always. He offers them both a cup of coffee, strong stuff he brewed himself. From their vantage point, they can look over much of Dewford proper, the township that suffered the most, along with an excellent view of the path Regice took from the ruins of Granite Cave to the shoreline.[break][break]
“But the pay’s good, and it’s our town. How long you guys think it’s gonna take?”

“Anyway, I’ve been trying to eat better. Three meals a day.” Which is mostly the truth, thanks in no small part to his Greninja. Hattori, who even now is close, resting in his shadow, is a godsend.[break][break]
“You know the really messed up part? I don’t think she would. Break our bond, I mean. Not over that. She’d just be…” His lips part in a wry, humorless smile. “disappointed. Like Hattori is when I don’t eat, or my Urshifu when I slack in training. Somehow, that seems worse to me.”

Some part of him wishes to argue that understanding takes away the romance of it all, but the Warrior knows well how little governments care about things like that. Nineteen people died in Dewford the day he took up the sword. Nineteen people who, in their graves, would care little about anything save that they are dead and the world moves on.[break][break]

Before Regice, there was no mist clinging to the mountain at the center of Dewford island. The view had been picturesque, making it a popular destination for hikers from Hoenn and beyond. The mist rolling over the mountain serves as one more reminder of inexorable change, how nothing stays the same forever. Not all change is bad. Something within the mist observes Roze and her run to town, roused by how urgent her business seems to be.[break][break]
As she reaches town, a long, mournful howl sounds across the mountains. It is a signal to someone who, until that moment, had been contemplating the intricacies of smoking tobacco. Without much else to do, so early in the morning, Sheriff Navidson partakes in an old ritual of his: idling outside what is left of the town’s shops. Nothing is open, not this early in the morning, but he still sees the occasional bit of foot traffic.[break][break]
The howl draws his attention, pulls his mind from how nice a cigar would feel right about now, and forces him to focus on the girl searching for something in the streets. A quick observation tells him that she’s not in danger, or at least her body language doesn’t seem to indicate she’s running from anything. Navy decides to take it slow, friendly, opening his truck door and stepping out.[break][break]
“Hey, Miss, you—” At last, recognition. He knows her by face and reputation. They are at war, and this maiden has already marched off to battle a god at least once. “You’re Roze Falkner, right? With the rangers? You alright?”

Zacian’s legend begins to spread, as it should. Untold stories might as well be dead stories, sitting unattended on a shelf. For every soul in Dewford and Hoenn beyond singing her praises, the more she settles into the role of a hero in the minds of the masses.[break][break]
She is the first to tell her Warrior that war is coming for Hoenn. He must make ready, and muster what forces he has. Dewford must play its part in the coming conflict. So, he decides to meet Montgomery, who has quickly proven himself an excellent deputy, and discuss what comes next for them both.[break][break]
Accompanying him are two Skarmories. Hovering closer to him is one named Tiny. For now, Tiny fits his name. The chicks are barely the size of Pidgies. Only their glowing blue wings mark the birds as special. They bask in the same blue light as Ascalon, sword of promised victory, blade of heroes.[break][break]
Both swoop into the bar as soon as the sheriff steps inside. When the barman sees who has walked in, the cry of protest dies upon his lips. Instead, he pours a cup of mead and readies it for the sheriff. Sitting at the bar, both chicks stay close. Tiny’s sibling, as yet unnamed, eyes Montgomery curiously.[break][break]
“Good to see ya, Montgomery. Appreciate you sticking to the town like glue after Regice went on his rampage.” Which, he thinks, is too impersonal. Navy strives to be more than an employer. “How’ve you been?”

They don’t want another MATIAS SILPH. Problem is, the one that started the whole program is the avatar of a Pokemon that stinks.” Zacian does not like Chi-Yu. That alone is not reason enough to admonish PENELOPE LIVY, but it’s the beginnings of a thread that weaves itself into a tapestry of mistrust. Though he did not know her well, he admired her from a distance when she was but a reporter, and it seems to him that she is one in another chain of people who have forged a bond with their Pokemon to their detriment.[break][break]
“They don’t get that any Pokemon can change their trainer. They don’t care ‘bout Daikenki cause he hasn’t made a legend for himself yet, but I bet you’d listen to anything he says way before you’d listen to some crazy request from Celebi. If you ask me, any trainer with a sygna suit should get access to their counseling resources.” Points he reminds himself of, time and time again, as he thinks about how his own cabal of Pokemon have made him change over their time together.[break][break]
