His eyes turn and behold Temp’s struggle, even as the Leviathan barrels down upon him. His body surges with strength. This is an impossible thing, what they attempt to do. Kyogre is coming for Sootopolis. There is little they can do to refute that fact.[break][break]
But if a thing can be endeavored…[break][break]
“ZACIAN!” Navy shouts across sea. “DO WHAT YOU CAN DO. I’LL SAVE ‘EM.”[break][break]
His sworn sword nods. Her blade surges with light. Ascalon was made for battles such as this, ones where that which truly matters in the world hangs in the balance. Her behemoth blade comes alive once more. She charges, and Hattori is at her side. She beheld his courage in the garden and knows that there are few Pokemon in the world, big or small, as strong in heart as the little frog. Beside her rushes no Greninja, but a roaring dragon.[break][break]
His aura grows, and grows, and grows. Hattori’s fist becomes the open maw of a roaring dragon. Behind him is its body, coiling and ready to deliver unto this god a reckoning. Hattori’s dragon hammer slams into Kyogre, backed up by shadow and by blade.[break][break]
His leal Lord turns his attention to other matters. The boat stabilizes in the water. Kyogre is coming. It’s fast approaching. Temp’s Pokemon have made this much easier. This is foolish, they would tell him. His enemies will know his tricks.[break][break]
So be it. He feels the metal on the bottom of the boat, using Temp’s Pokemon to keep the boat steady. It floats out of the water, slowly, surely, moving out of Kyogre’s path. It’s working. This boon born of his oath, which those of little imagination or romance would call avatarship, urges the people to safety…[break][break]
…which leaves him exposed to Kyogre. Grendel has a hole in his chest, placed there by an origin pulse. Its fury carries across the water, ripping the heart out of an old, old dragon.[break][break]
Navy does not sense anything is happening until he falls into the water. He does not feel fear until the water fills his lungs.

“Nineteen people died ‘cause of what you did, Howard.” His voice loses all traces of warm or friendship. They are harsh words, cruel words, but Howard must bear them. It was his command that killed those people as much as it was Navy’s trust. It is a cross they bear together, with Howard cast in the role of villain.[break][break]
“Most of them very old or very young. We found the Hannigan boys frozen solid up in the rubble. Think they were camping out and got caught when Regice busted up through the cave. All three frozen solid.”[break][break]

She sees Navy, sees him for the first time in months, and runs at him excitedly. He carries her father's scent and her father's soul. Not even his sword sister, hero of many battles, will know him as her father knows him.[break][break]
"Hey there, little lady." He takes to a knee with a grin. "Get in here. I'll be back for your sisters. Your parents and older brothers miss you." She hops into the pokeball without hesitation or pomp.

Some part of him expected something would happen when he got back to Dewford. His people wished him well. Deputies gave their reports. Finally, as day gives way to night as day always does, he is left alone at his home. Navy enjoys a cigar on his porch, smoking, thinking about the past and the future and what might have been and what might well be. When a woman steps out of some unknown dimension onto his porch, he turns and rises to meet her. He does not know if she is friend or foe, and so his hand goes to a pokeball.[break][break]
Another creature does not afford the intruder the luxury of chance. Something clings to the Visionary’s back, a tiny Greninja with a kunai ready to press against her throat. Navy is awed first by how sudden her appearance is and second by how immediate Hattori’s urgent desire to protect manifests into action. His first word is for the Greninja, lest he rouse the Unown’s anger.[break][break]
“Hattori. Back off. She’s not here to hurt me.” The frog jumps down, backing away, but not easing himself up. Her words carry in them a harshness that keeps the loyal shinobi on edge. At last, he looks to her, meets her red eyes, and acknowledges what she says and all the terrible implications of the words.[break][break]
“I put myself in hot water.” He admits. Navy sits up straight, looking up at her and putting out the cigar with a stomp of his boot. “Crap.” Even here, he censors his words, speaking them with low urgency, like a fire with fresh wood thrown on top.[break][break]
“Who else heard?” His eyes pivot between his visitor and the mist which seems to gather along the beach.

And what did the other place look like?[break][break]

“Hell.” He says without hesitation. There are words he tries to filter out of himself in the presence of women. Sometimes he thinks himself a chauvinist for it, but he is simply a man who thinks women deserve better words than men. Even still, there is no other word that comes to mind when he imagines the bowels of a sleeping god.[break][break]
“There’s dead things sleeping down there. Poisoned angels in the dark. I wouldn’t wish that place on my worst enemy.” The words form a paradox. Eternatus is his worst enemy. The discarded fourth child of the Creator, slumbering on the edge of the universe, waits to awaken once more. It will long outlive all of them, roost upon stars when their bones have been reduced to ash, and it will not even remember that mortals once mined its heart for power.[break][break]
“It’s not worth thinking ‘bout. It was my job, making sure nothing in there got out into Dewford.” Somewhere in his words is an intel breach, he thinks. He finds, as he often does, that he does not care. Airi is no Rocket spy, nor are her painted lips loose. She will keep the secret, for she will be too busy spilling blood and saving lives for the League to do otherwise. He prays that those whose injuries she treats are not rendered thusly by the Skeleton Gigantic’s fell power.[break][break]
His mind turns to a matter closer at hand. He recognizes the first man they meet from an old dream and says nothing to him. Navy simply lets him pass, letting Airi do the talking while he watches their path forward deeper into the darkness. Farther along the path, they find their target for the day. Airi gets to work, ever a woman of action.[break][break]
From the darkness wanders a Charmander. It is a small thing, innocent eyes filled with curiosity at the humans. It smiles, as if it doesn’t now what’s about to happen. A chunk of ore glows. Only now does he notice they are in a massive, open area. Massive…[break][break]
“Gout!”[break][break]
He shouts an odd word as another pokeball flies free, quick as a gunshot at high noon. From it spills an ancient parody of Entei. Gout is the name he has given this creature Scientists call Gouging Fire. It sees the spread of dynergy and spreads a burning bulwark over Airi, her Gardevoir, and the man she heals. Flames guard them, but do not burn them. Heat swells as the force is returned upon the creature which now towers above them.[break][break]
Innocence is replaced with fury. Charmander is caught in a net which has killed too many Pokemon before them. The creature little understands that it is walking dead. It looks down upon them and spreads flames across the ground. Sunlight spreads…[break][break]
And both Ballbreaker and Gout feel the sunlight empower them. Navy does not understand protosynthesis. He is no man of science who seeks some deeper understanding of such things. Action and battle are his watch and his warrant.[break][break]
“The stuff the League mines here, and down in that place I’m talking about, it’s what lets them build artificial power spots. It lets Pokemon dynamax. Only problem is, when there’s a natural one, and Pokemon without a dyna band dynamax, it kills them.” He offers her that explanation before turning to his Pokemon. This is an impossible fight, but that is precisely where the warrior is at his strongest.[break][break]
Ballbreaker is not one of the ones his master carries on him often. There’s too much plain, apparent, feral joy at the act of combat in the Great Tusk’s eyes. Just now, that ferocity might prove their salvation. So empowered by the sun, he rolls into a ball and charges forward like a wrecking ball. He smashes against the Charmander’s barrier head enough to make the creature recoil. It cannot step back, but it shrieks.[break][break]
“Gout. Keep guarding Airi.”[break][break]
And so his beast does. Ballbreaker meets the Charmander again and again and again in a headlong rush. The barrier cracks. The cracks spread. Finally, upon the third charge, it breaks utterly. Charmander shrieks, and they are left with a small, dead thing surrounded by wildfires.[break][break]
Ballbreaker is withdrawn. In his place comes Hattori, his small brave Greninja. He gets to work fighting the fires with water spouts at once while Navy turns to check on Airi, still shielded by Gout.[break][break]
“You alright?”

Investigating its carcass will reveal that it has somehow incorporated Dynite Ore onto its body. Though it is no Regi-titan, one may make macabre parallels.[break][break]

Gabe’s eyes were full of stars, imagining what it would be like to have a team that strong. It wasn’t until he met freya morningstar and learned how to raise dragons from her that he truly comprehended what a monumental task training one dragon is, much less a full team of six.[break][break]
“First thing’s first, it’s expensive.” He raises a finger as if counting a list on his hand. “Most of ‘em like meat over berries. They’ll burn a hole in your wallet or getcha sued if they eat someone’s Pokemon. Second thing’s the ego. Dragons are tough. They’re the best. They know it, too. They all wanna be the star of the show, and that’s if they’re willing to work with you. Three, most of ‘em like doing their own thing. You’re not training the dragon, you’re taming the dragon.”[break][break]
During his tenure as gym leader, he had proclaimed himself a dragon specialist. This was as much for himself as it was any branding. Freya, Amor Rose, Remiel Calcifet, and the other dragon tamers of Hoenn all probably deserved the title more than he did. It was a trial by fire, and it made him grow.[break][break]
“There’s a reason most people who train dragons are rich.” He adds. “So there’s a lot that goes into it. Double battles with dragons are especially hard ‘cause of that ego thing. If you don’t have a good handle on them, they’ll work against each other. Anyway…if you wanna be a champion, it’s best to have a balanced team.”[break][break]
His eyes are distant as he watches the screen. Thoughts of another challenger intrude.[break][break]
“You’d have to be crazy to end up Champion with six Mightyena on your team.”

“Not dead.” The ghost says as he leans down, petting Shirley on the top of her head. He is long past fearing dragons and their kin. After the part she played in his story, he likes her the way one might an old friend.[break][break]
“Injured. Probably scarred for life, or at least a few months. But not dead.” His eyes focus on Howard, studying him and the stories written across his body. They’re told in bandages, surgical scars, and most importantly, the eye. The eyes always tell a story.[break][break]
“Cyan…” He grinds his teeth. The word bless was on the tip of his tongue, but he swallows it back down. The word feels wrong. “I guess the scientific way to put it is that I’m her avatar.” He hates the words as soon as he says them.[break][break]
“This is something I can do now. Guess our lives are both gonna be different, going forward.” A pause. He reaches for a cigar that isn’t there. He adds a word with derision. “Avatar.”[break][break]
“Really takes the romance out of it, don’t it?”

"Stay in the ball 'cause I'm not wasting another one on you." And so he throws. Dhelmise disappears and the ball starts to shake.

His eyes linger on the Lycanroc. Anne is a beautiful beast, her coat a rare shade of blue. Wars have been started over Pokemon like her. How strange it is, the age in which they live, where such natural beauty seems downright banal compared to slumbering gods and monstrous dragons.[break][break]
She is not to be underestimate. None of her packmates are. Not when Nameless, too, falls into unconsciousness. Perhaps he would fall into death, were it not for the intervention of the gym leader. A flash of red returns the Salamence to his ball. There he can rest. A visit to the Pokemon center will fix everything.[break][break]
Everything except a bruised ego.[break][break]
He supposes it’s time to bring out one of his own pack leaders. It seems a queer thing to call Arthur. His Kommo-O affects the appearance of a prince. He travelled far across the world to be here and have his stake in the fate of this region. He appears in a flash of light and Navy heaves.[break][break]
Their souls link. Navy and Arthur cease to be two beings and instead are extensions of one another, a dragon with two heads and two bodies. Navy stands up straighter. Surrounded by other dragons, he feels like he is conducting a symphony. His grunts are registered by his fellows, who all move to obey.[break][break]
Leviathan sees his foe coming and does all he can think to do: create a smokescreen. Noxious fumes spread across his corner of the field, buying him time to disappear into the granite jungle and relocate himself. There will be other perches. As undignified as it is to retreat, he can suffer indignity if it brings him victory.[break][break]
Grendel, meanwhile, uses the air to his advantage. His wings kick up in a blast of extrme speed, propelling him up, around the rocks, across the field. He’ll ride the wind until he can find time to attack.[break][break]
Arthur, meanwhile, circles the packleader. His eyes find Anne’s, and they speak a silent challenge. He raises his fists and clangs his scales together in challenge. His clangorous soul sounds across the arena, daring her to attack.

“Ladies first.” He motions towards the hole in the middle of the power spot and watches her jump. A younger man would make a joke about how surprised he was she didn’t rock heels, but it dies in his mind. They’ve got work to do, and he doubts their unfortunate victim will mind being rescued by someone like her.[break][break]
“Ollie, where the hell’d you find this one?” That he says, readying himself for his own plunge. The fall is another one of Hoenn’s many little jokes, a wink from the Creator saying that physics and geometry as humans understand them mean little to the universe. He falls, and falls, and falls, until at last he hits the bottom. The fall lasts long enough to kill, but it barely registers as more than a hard thump under his combat boot. A smooth roll ends with him rising up with a pokeball in hand like a Liepard.[break][break]
“Lucky for us, I’ve got a good deterrent on hand. Ballbreaker, get out here.” Navy throws out his pokeball, unleashing a lumbering prehistoric mammoth. Scientists name this creature Great Tusk. This specimen stands tall even compared to its brethren, a lumbering behemoth that regards Airi with a beast’s eyes before turning to take ponderous steps forward. His steps shake the ground, and Navy thinks that is good. It signals that they’re coming, and most of the Pokemon in his path flee.[break][break]
“Gotta admit, the view’s better down here than the other place the League used to mine for dyna ore.” There’s more tera crystals here, and he finds he is fond of them. They’re cancer for their world, but he cannot deny the beauty caught in their reflection as he passes by.[break][break]
“Or maybe it’s just the company.”

Townsfolk emerge from bunkers and are greeted by the ruins of their lives. They pick through frozen ruins for remnants of what once was. That first day, before their distant government can scramble a proper response, they squat in the tropical heat and make the most while carrion circle about.[break][break]
At night they whisper to one another about a ghost among the moors outside town. A distant figure watches them, disappearing when they draw too close. They wonder if it is their sheriff, who they last saw still as the dead being lifted into a helicopter. Those brave enough to leave the town hear a mournful howl.[break][break]
He does not know when the sleepwalking ends and conscious begins. One moment is darkness and dreams of old things and the next is lucidity under the moonlight. Below, his charges sleep. He turns to walk down, to walk among them, to tell them that everything will be okay, but he sees something out of place.[break][break]

It is like the eyes of god have turned upon him, the building blocks of the universe itself taking notice of a human. He does not shirk from them here, as he did not shirk from them when he stood in their world. He does not know to whom he speaks, but he speaks all the same.[break][break]
“Tell your masters something for me.” He speaks with such clarity that it almost throws off the rhythm of his words, like he’s never been more sure of anything in his life. “You guys only care when someone bonds with a god, huh? Well, Zacian ain’t a god. She’s just like me. Someone who knows she can make a difference. Someone who won’t back down just ‘cause the bully can hit harder than us. Bet you’re all so smug ‘bout this. Getting Howard n’ me to fight.”[break][break]
His eyes look past the unknown, down to the light of civilization that makes his people’s persistence.[break][break]
“We’re gonna have to sing your song n’ dance. Fight each other. Probably wake up some new thing that’s gonna try to kill everyone we know n’ love. Even still, remember this:”[break][break]
His eyes find one eye among the crowd and does not look away. He does not know that he speaks exclusively to friends, with his foe’s eyes turned elsewhere.[break][break]
