“Fuck!” Kouji kicks him and he still stands. His lower body tenses in anticipation of blow coming there, only for it to go higher. It’s a good kick. Kouji is always good at fighting in the technical sense, but he affects the appearance of some well-made tool without a master’s hands to wield him. [break][break]
“How do I stay motivated?” What a simple question, one that he thinks bears such an obvious question as to be thoughtless. With the question posed, he has no choice but to truly consider how. More importantly, why.[break][break]
“Did you ever stop by Dewford before the battle? I mean really stop and stay here. Gonna guess not. I never did. Shit, most people in this region never did. But everybody was here, just for one day. Declan Walsh, Matias Silph, Eva Morales, Cillian Quinn. You name ‘em, they fought here. They fought over that stupid stone. With it, he throws all the terrible weight he can muster at Kouji. In his peripheral vision, he sees Zacian rush the Roaring Moon, meaning to play rough with it along her blade’s edge.[break][break]
“So if you come to my town and try to pull the shit you’re trying to pull, you better mean business!” And so his fists fly again, all over Kouji’s body, with reckless abandon and righteous indignation.

Her eyes speak no rebuke when he says he cannot go into battle with Swift. It is a rare, mad human who can lope into battle atop a steed. There is silent admiration of her courage, muddied only by distaste when the word avatar is spoken. Even if it is correct, this creature of romance detests the science of it, utterly devoid of romance or anything to add color to life.[break][break]
But Swift comes, swift as his name would have one think. Swift’s electro ball could have ended the contest then and there were it not for what separates man from monsters: technique. The great wolf’s blade pivots up quicker than anyone might expect. It’s not enough to stop the ball altogether, Swift is an echo of a god, but Zacian turns a deathblow into mere pain.[break][break]
Pain she can deal with. Pain is part and parcel for a warrior. She grips her blade, gathers strength in her muscles, and bounds for Swift. She jumps forward. Plain delight is in her eyes. It is not often that she is afforded the opportunity to play rough. Decorum is expected of those who wear titles like knight and hero. She must walk as if she is on eggshells, lest her power hurt others.[break][break]
Not here. Here, she attacks Swift with reckless abandon, swiping at him with fae energy pulsing along Ascalon’s blade.

“It’s probably pirates.” The sheriff muses as he rides across the waves on his Kingdra’s back. Reports filtered into the sheriff’s department and the local ranger station about Pokemon acting erratic a few miles to the east of Dewford island. Lucky for Navy, the ranger station finds itself staffed by a very competent ranger.[break][break]
Beau Fontaine and him don’t get to get together as often as he’d like. Before Regice went on a rampage and displaced practically the entire island’s wildlife, they mostly just checked in with one another and stayed in their lanes. It’s been working, and he thanks Arceus for small miracles. Having a competent ranger on hand means Navy can handle the messy business of humans.[break][break]
“Pirates. Man. Hoenn’s crazy. Real modern day pirates. Wonder if they’re smuggling drugs like somethin’ out of an eighties movie.” Navy thinks after he says the words that he should treat this matter with the severity it’s due. If it were any other two duly charged servants of the League, they might be in serious trouble. Most criminals have at least one hardened Pokemon to their name, to say nothing of their guns and other weapons.[break][break]
Navy just feels like everything’s going to be alright. Beau and Eduardo Hisakawa both have that effect on Navy. It turns an otherwise boring task (potentially broken by a burst of action if he’s lucky) into a flight of fancy, an adventure.[break][break]

Broad shoulders, heavy from the weight of many lives carried upon them, frame a body meticulously carved for warcraft. Ahead of them surges a power spot, the last remnant of a hyperborean titan. Inside of it be monsters. They will be very fortunate if they do not encounter one before the day is through.[break][break]
“Not many women I’d trust to have my back.” He doesn’t notice the operative word in that sentence, or how it is phrased. He is too preoccupied with the mission. Lives are at stake, and that means there is no time for banter. Instead, he checks his six pokeballs one more time and walks over to the edge of the power spot.[break][break]
“Let’s go over this one more time. Don’t mean to patronize you, just wanna be clear. Someone fell into the power spot. Happens all the time. Dumb kids, Rocket goons, treasure hunters…all kinds end up down there. It’s our job to get ‘em out. There’s tunnels down below, rich with dynite ore and tera crystals. Bad business. It gets you sick if you’re down there for too long, so time’s of the essence. Pokemon roam about, and they can dynamax if they get too close to big chunks of ore. He jumps on Milotic’s back and races across the waves. It is smooth, slick in the water. Navy understands why Josh Devlin would keep one of these as a racing animal. Riding atop this beautiful beast, he almost forgets he’s in a war zone for a split second.[break][break]
Vortigern and Grendel both fly low, both haggard from the storm they weathered above. Grendel is by far more comfortable with the sea, so Navy makes a decision that he will come to regret in time. There is no good choice here, only a choice. He jumps upon the gentle sea dragon’s back, and he climbs, just in time to hear Cillian ask his question.[break][break]
“Kyogre’s gotta hit him too, and he seems real hellbent on barreling forward. Hattori, it’s your-”[break][break]
Hattori does not need to be asked. He has no wings, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. He falls towards the sea and towards an angry god. He falls without fear, for he is sure that his Lord is with him.[break][break]
Kyogre strikes him and hits a mere log, blasting it out of the way and into the path of a shadow bolt. Navy conjures a dozen swords and sends them flying for the log. Too late he sees flashes of another Hattori, turned into a pincushion, dying for him. Grendel opens up with extreme speed to smash upon the log…[break][break]
…and Hattori reappears. He exudes so much raw z-energy that it damn near spills out of him. His one eye is focused on the sea god. His hand SLAMS forward.[break][break]
For a few precious seconds, Kyogre seems to stand still. Navy searches for Tempest Quinn, wondering if that was enough time.

They’d have to be able to bring the dead back to life. He remembers saying. Finally, he stands before a shrine to an old god. Who or what they were doesn’t matter. howard slayte could tell him all about them. Just now, miracles like resurrection seem banal. They live in an age of gods and heroes.[break][break]
But there wouldn’t be much point, considering they’re the ones who put the kid in his grave.[break][break]

The lies were not for him. He is precisely where he is meant to be. In a few short days, he will clash with Rocket and not give the matter any thought.[break][break]

He prays that these good folk will not lose anything in the war, but he knows they will. War takes. It incinerates everything until only ashes are left. The price of their freedom is steep, and he hates that those around him must pay the toll.[break][break]
Navy does not know if anything hears his quiet prayers. The only rebuke offered is wind rolling over chimes.[break][break]

Even if Zacian would dismiss that Navy as the blackguard he would be, they would bloody the League good; Them, and everyone else on their side.[break][break]
But that isn’t their world. That isn’t how things shook out. Instead, he chose to be better. As he turns to face Temp, he sees what’s coming through the water behind Temp. His heart sinks, mouth slack at the sight.[break][break]
There WERE civilians still.[break][break]
He curses all the firebrands who would see Rocket dead, no matter the cost. The people on the boat are not warriors. Most of them don’t even seem to have Pokemon. People line the decks of this boat, shouting frantic words at one another.[break][break]
They do not see what’s coming. Not until it’s too late.[break][break]
Arceus, I’m stupid.[break][break]
He thinks as he faces the sea. Temp’s Eevee bites into his legs. Both his weapons are forgotten. He needs his hands for another task.[break][break]
“Hattori. Zacian.” She sees the problem at once. Kyogre is coming. The great god of the sea barrels right towards that boat. They will not be able to pull away in time. Each of them has a role to play. He must do what he can do, Zacian must do what only she can.[break][break]
Despite the curses, despite the burns, she cuts a path across the water. Her behemoth blade is revealed in full. Though Kyogre is not dynamaxed, it is more than big enough to be considered a giant. Ascalon clashes against the god, slowing it, but not stopping it. She strikes again, and is burned again.[break][break]
He wonders what it must look like, to them. He simply threw away his wants, cast off his ally. As he turns, trying desperately to feel the metal amidst the water, he can't even spare breath to speak.

@shred’s words form the first hair in a Faultline crack, one that has been a long time coming. Isaac Merlo takes Howard, does everything in his power to mend him. People move about. Eduardo Hisakawa stands ready, ever the sentinel, ever vigilant. Shred’s words deflate Navy, and afford him time to turn and look at the rising sun.[break][break]
A new day dawns over Dewford. Much of the town has been demolished, but buildings can be rebuilt. Navy’s eyes are for the sea, and for the giants looming above them. Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, despite what all the dreams he has dreamed would have him believe, is alright. This too will pass.[break][break]
He feels tired. So very, very tired. Until that moment, until Shred proved he was exactly the sort of man Navy could respect when no one in the world would blame him for doing otherwise, he hadn’t realized just how tired he really was.[break][break]
Behind him, Hattori appears. This is the real Hattori, not a figment of a dream that died for him. Hattori clings to Isaac, examines howard slayte, and nods back towards Shred and Grigori. Hattori is there when Isaac moves to hand Howard off, as he must eventually do.[break][break]
“Eddie.” Navy calls out, still not turning. “Get Beau, Noel, and Montgomery. Get anyone you can find. We’ve got a lot of people to check up on, and a lot of phone calls to me. All that’s up to you.”[break][break]
With those words said, the dam bursts. He collapses on the sand, the last thing he remembers for sleep takes him being the light of dawn. The warmth of that sun and the caress of the wind upon his skin is all he needs to reassure him that Dewford is proud of him.
