We all stand at the bottom of an impossibly high tower. Ivy curls around the stone like hands on a throat. Fitting. I know little of the human world, but I know this: there would be many who would gladly curl their hands around Elisabeth Fiorelli’s throat. They would squeeze until something popped. The world would be a better place. [break][break]

My liege lord does not agree. I see it in his eyes. No matter how many times my logic engine processes his words, they do not make sense to me. Even still, his boots are the first to clink against the stone. Axe in one hand, gun in the other, he walks up to face the witch. [break][break]

He has always had that gentle resolve. The phrase seems a paradox. None know paradoxes better than I. I should not exist. As I fall into line behind the Squire, who is answered only by silence and the cries of Pokemon, I remember a time long ago. [break][break]

Humans killed my mother. I remember the pain in her heart, the day she died. My kind are cursed. We know the heart better than anyone. She hated that she would never see us grow up, or find love. I thought we were going to die too, until the liege lord and the young knight found us. [break][break]

They gave us names. Roland is mine. Famous land. The young knight says it comes from a story. Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came. It seems a fitting name, as we stand in this witch’s long, thin shadow. [break][break]

I, too, hate her. She mocks me with my brother’s ghost. I am no true Roland. I have never been a true Roland. I fell into the rift, and I have been forced to bear witness to my own ghost. I am no stranger to ghosts, but Olivier…[break][break]

In Hoenn or in fable, he deserves better. And so, Witch, I will show you hate. You will know death, and you will know him very well.

Don’t count yourself out.” Zaria smiled encouragingly, as if they weren’t talking about a battle to the death, fought in some time when Howard would be blessed with power beyond mortal men.[break][break]
“Let’s not talk about this anymore. Nothing left to say.” Nothing, save empty boasts of young men about who would win or who would lose. There would be a winner and a loser one day, and the world would have to abide by the outcome. For now, they slept in these dreadful woods. Upon waking, they gathered their things and set off to the north.[break][break]
Ballonlea, like most Galarian settlements that survived Eternatus’s arrival, had high walls separating it from the outside world. In stark contrast to Motostoke, whose gates they would have found impenetrable, the gates of Ballonlea were wide open. Grimmsnarls and their younger kin smiled at them. Sylveons rotting from the inside out bowed their heads. The last Galarian Rapidash looked from them to the tower.[break][break]
“Almost feels like she’s inviting us right on in.” Said the hero. “Seems like a trap.”[break][break]
“Query: is it not always a trap? Statement: whether it is a trap or not, we must go. Your daughter is waiting for us.”[break][break]
“You said it, Roland. Not like we’ve got any choice.” He turned to the others, eyes finding Howard’s. “You guys ready?”

“I made him retreat, and that’s not the same as victory.” Four dead Pokemon doesn’t feel like victory. None of them had graves. None of them would be mourned, save by him. The last vestiges of his brother’s team were gone, save one lone Charizard.[break][break]
“This is all I have left of Ironsides.” He gestured at the lone feather tied to Zaria’s hip. “I don’t know how Groudon didn’t burn it. The rest of him got melted.”[break][break]
“It’s a fine sword.” Said Zaria, as if that were any consolation for the loss.[break][break]
“The finest of his age. Ironsides fought for me like that ancient hero’s sword fought for them.”[break][break]
That drew Zaria’s full attention. She drew the feather, holding it up in the light. She saw her reflection on the blade’s edge, although the face looking back at her seemed older.[break][break]
“It’s seen many battles.”[break][break]
“And it’s saved lives. If it wasn’t for Ironsides, Rocket would have a few more slaves.” Which brought the subject back to Howard, and the decisions that brought him here. Regice was climbing. He would burst through, and he would destroy Dewford. His island would be a mirror of the Silent Icelands, with only the wind to sing of the souls who once lived there.[break][break]
“You could-”[break][break]
“Don’t.” Zaria spoke with conviction. “Howard will be our enemy, when this dream ends, but he chose his road. It is his to walk, and not yours to judge.”[break][break]
“You’re right.” They all had, and that’s something he had to accept. None of Rocket’s command staff were folk who would defect. They knew what they were in for. They staked their claim under Declan Walsh’s flag. They would die for their side, as he had died for his and would again if he must.

“You’re getting better.” Said Navy as the Pokemon cooled down from their match. The training allowed him to gauge a few things he thought might one day prove important: his Pokemon, though stronger than he, were not as strong as they were in the waking world. Well-trained, but not as strong. There was a reason, he assumed, but he would not dwell on that.[break][break]
Instead, he thought over Howard’s observation. Working at his whetstone, he noticed the others looking with some interest, all save Vortigern. His black dragon’s eyes were distant, looking out into the woods poisoned by Wo-Chien. Vortigern and Hattori were the only two Pokemon, out of a full team of six, to return from the depths of Eternatus’s chamber that day.[break][break]
Is Vortigern dead up there right now? He wondered. Did Regice kill him?[break][break]
“First time I met Silph – Matias, I mean, in person, I called him down to Dewford. It was a lot of empty bitching. Me saying no one would help me out with Eternatus until it’s too late. Asked him if he thought Groudon could destroy whatever organ’s in the chamber you and I fought in.” He smiled ruefully.[break][break]
“League couldn’t leave well enough alone. Sent Silph and me down into the chamber to mine. Mine we did…til he got the idea in his head to strike the core. Fought him off. He brought out Groudon. Vortigern ended up Dynamaxing. Arceus, I’m lucky he didn’t die. Olivier, Roland’s brother, he…” Roland was busy training, still caught up in the fight.[break][break]
“…wished for Hattori to live. Only reason Hattori made it out alive. That’s why he’s black now. Groudon burned him to a crisp. Vet told me his tongue burns whenever he eats.” That this never came up before surprises him, in hindsight. “Arceus. I’m surprised you’re not more interested in the other part, what Penny said. About how I considered running off with what the League has of the blue orb.”

“Calm as I can be.” One more swing and his axe would have cleaved clear through the tree. The Black Knight’s metal was terrifying. Pulling it back, he put the axe away. His eyes turned to the woods. They were dark, and threatened to grow darker still.[break][break]
“Arceus, she took…” His daughter, with whom he barely seemed to speak even now. His daughter, who seemed content to watch him train and banter with the others. His daughter, who he seemed to be failing again.[break][break]
“Yeah, I’m good. We’re going to the tower anyway. We’re getting her back.” There was someone else who needed his attention. Roland stood stock still, as if trying to compute some problem a human mind couldn’t begin to understand.[break][break]
“Roland. Are you alright?”[break][break]
“Negative.” The bluntness almost made Navy laugh.[break][break]
“Better question. Are you good to keep going for today?”[break][break]
“Affirmative. We must find Olivier.”[break][break]
“His brother.” Navy told Howard as he turned. He wasn’t going to get through to the Iron Valiant right now, but he didn’t need to. All they needed to do was keep moving, for what time they had left before the sun sunk.[break][break]
“Matias killed him.”[break][break]
“Statement,” Roland began in a tone that insisted he wasn’t lying, “you all missed something in your haste.” His right arm held a glittering crystal. Butterfrees seemed to float inside. He tossed it to Zaria, whose expression was unreadable under the helmet. It disappeared, like so many had before.[break][break]
“Thanks, Ser Roland.” She said, looking to Roland as she handed Howard’s halberd back to him.[break][break]
“Now then. Let’s go.”

“Bold of ye to assume I’m leadin’ ye anywhere, Henpecked Howard.” The bandit teased. Every word, every syllable, was spoken as if it were a ray of light from the sun. Tormund’s grin was as constant as the rise and fall of air from the lungs, as steady as a strong man’s heartbeat. He was joyous enough for three, which seemed necessary considering how little anyone else wanted to be there.[break][break]
“The witch has sent me aid – a boon companion, slain by one of the foolish men who fell into her spider’s web.”[break][break]
“You sure talk a lot, Tormund.” Said Navy, cutting in. Tormund’s smile did not falter.[break][break]
“Aha, jealous of one of your fellow flies, o Rider?”[break][break]
“I ain’t some guy she fooled.” He insisted, before trying to move past the point. “If she wants me to come, I’ll come. She don’t need Crystal. Hand her back.”[break][break]
“Are ye not?” Tormund raised an eyebrow. “Ye seem vexed enough by the witch. She might not stir yer loins the way she did this other fly, aye, but she stirs yer heart. A deadly trap either way, and I know a thing or two about that! I’ve ran afoul of plenty’o bears in my time. Their honeypots be dangerous!” He slapped Doug, who growled in annoyance. “HAR!”[break][break]
“She teach you to talk in riddles? Crystal, say somethin’![”[break][break]
“Doesn’t matter to me how I get there.” She said with an apathetic shrug. “We’re going there to kill her anyway.”[break][break]
While they spoke, a ghost slowly materialized amidst the wyrdlight. Soft red eyes glowed, looking out at one among their numbers: Roland. The ghost looked like him, so close as to be a twin. What separated them was their flesh. Roland’s was a chrome simulacrum of a human shape. The ghost’s was a mere memory of the same blueprint.[break][break]
“O L I V I E R.” Roland shouted at the ghost of a Gardevoir MATIAS SILPH murdered.[break][break]
That, if nothing else, surprised Crystal. She turned to look at Roland just as his brother’s ghost teleported them the bandits and her away, leaving the heroes alone in the woods.[break][break]
“Fuck,” Navy cursed, slamming his axe into a tree, “FUCK!” He looked to Howard. “Ballonlea’s still weeks away. Arceus damn it.”

“Har!” A voice cut through the heroes. Navy turned his head to see the source of the voice. A Perrserker sat astride a Bloodmoon Ursaluna, holding Crystal at clawpoint. Zaria stood, weapon pointed, in the middle of a standoff.[break][break]
“Ye need take no shame in losin’ to the likes o’ me, lass.” The cat purred, his voice a rasp, like nails against steel. “Better lasses than ye have tried t’take on Tormund, king of the wilds and me wife, Doug.” Doug, which hardly seemed a feminine name, roared in disapproval at being addressed as such.[break][break]
“Quiet, quiet, quiet, ye! Ye can have more of me love when we collect our reward from the queen.” Crystal, for her part, looked bored. Her eyes were glazed over like someone forced to sit through a scene in a movie she did not particularly care for, showing just enough interest to indicate she was following the plot.[break][break]
“Unhand her, rogue!” Zaria barked.[break][break]
“Now that I cannot do, lass.” Tormund shook his head. “For the Witch of Ballonlea wishes to extend an invitation to the Rider. She wishes me to acquire the girl to ensure he will come, and come quick. Somethin’ I know little about. Har!”[break][break]
“Take your hand off my daughter.” At last, Navy arrived. Raising his gun, his voice was cold as the black metal of the gun barrel. [break][break]
“Now now, none of that.” Tormund grinned. “I promise ye, she will come to no harm under our care.”

From where he stood atop the beetle, the Rider noticed a curious thing. Howard’s halberd pierced the ground, and Zaria picked it up. She barked something at an unseen foe, and she charged off into the woods.[break][break]
He wasn’t afforded time to process that, or think about what it could mean. Howard’s life was hanging in the balance. His Squire tumbled towards earth that would be all too happy to break his bones. Tossing his axe aside, he drew his gun. A line of chain shot out, hooking around Howard’s arm. The line held, and Navy felt old for the first time in a long while. His muscles threatened to give out as the weight of Howard tried to pull him down into a long fall.[break][break]
“Vortigern! Vortigern, I need you!” He shouted at the Beast, who turned from his tearing to see what was happening. The dragon’s gold eyes looked into Howard, then at Navy. His jets ignited, and he flew down. Howard was scooped up, brought back up top. Navy took that chance to jump onto the dragon as well. He landed with a thump, right beside Howard.[break][break]
“Vortigern, give it everything you’ve got!” He commanded. “Come on! We’re going to pull this beetle out of the sky!” Raising his gun, the rider pierced it with chain after chain after chain. All led to his gun. All that held them in place was the strength of Navy’s arm.[break][break]
“Bite on this, Vortigern.” He commanded his dragon, who did so without complaint. “And dive.”[break][break]
And dive he did. Orbeetle cried as it realized, against all odds, that it was rapidly descending towards the ground. Shrieking, it struggled against the chains, whining and crying until…[break][break]
Slam[break][break]
It was like a bomb went off. The earth flew in every direction. Vortigern crashed into the ground first, sending Navy and Howard rolling. Orbeetle struggled to right itself, return to the air…[break][break]
And Roland’s killing blade dove into its brain, ending any hope it had of returning to an open sky. The beast died.[break][break]
As it shrunk inch by inch, all was silent.[break][break]
“Holy…shit…” Navy coughed. “Howard, are you alright?”

“Farthest they’ve ever gotten is the cave. Sometimes, they try and break through.” He speaks grimly, remembering a hard fought battle alongside Noel Parker, another deputy. “Always come in twos. If it’s not me, take Deputy Parker or Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki. She’ll be the gym leader come May. There’s an archaeologist living in town, howard slayte, who helps out too. Can’t stress this enough. Never come here alone.”[break][break]
They move through sandy shores, across high cliffs. They swim through empty air. Eventually, they come to a base built long ago, when he first took up the mantle of guarding this land. Stepping into a grotto, they find creature comforts from the world above. The base’s equipment has been modified to function amidst all this pressure, and it has basic amenities. Even the light filtering through from above seems gentler here. On the far back is a wall.[break][break]
“I like to patrol along this route here. This’ll catch most of the places the Nihilego like to wander, plus all the logical spots for Rocket to enter.” He grumbles the word, Rocket, like speaking about them annoys him. “Crazy as hell, those guys. They’re trying to harvest the toxins those Nihilego produce. Nihilego are rock and poison type, so prepare accordingly.”

Vortigern and Navy’s eyes met. Both knew what had to be done as Howard was pulled up into the tractor beam. Crystal peppered it with arrows, moving closer and closer to the forest’s edge for cover. She was his daughter. She’d be alright. Navy ran for Vortigern, abandoning Valkyrie and jumping on the dragon’s back.[break][break]
“I promise I’ll get you some good meat for this.” The Rider promised a dragon, which would not suffer to be called a steed. “Let’s get up there, and help Howard.” His Squire little needed the help. With every day they spent in this poisoned land, his skill grew. His halberd struck home, and the Orbeetle whose name they did not know screamed. It was a dagger against a tempest, and they would need to bring all they had to bear.[break][break]
Navy clung to one side of Vortigern, Roland the other. Below, Zaria shouted something Navy did not hear. He was too high up, too busy fighting giants.[break][break]
Vortigern slammed into the supermassive creature with a wild thing’s ferocity. His claws cut into flesh, fangs biting. Navy and Roland each rolled off on top of the revolving disc.[break][break]
“Let’s mess him up.” Navy huffed to Roland.[break][break]
“Affirmation: As you say.”[break][break]
Navy chopped at the beetle’s carapace like he was chopping firewood. The monster screaming, spinning faster and faster.[break][break]
“Howard! Howard, see if you can latch on!” Navy shouted as he worked his terrible task. “You’re a goner if he releases that beam!”

“First time I met her, I was buying flowers for her. Flowers for Gabe’s grave.” His eyes drew up to the sky. So near the woods, it was a purple nebula once again. A stray thought wondered whether blue skies would return to the feywoods once Elisabeth was gone, or if the miracle in Motostoke was purely Hattori’s design.[break][break]
“Whole world was going crazy back then. People thought the world was gonna end. Felt right, to visit his grave.” She armed him with flowers, flowers worthy of a fallen brother. “I don’t really go in for fantasy. That was Gabe’s thing. Kyle’s too. But man. She reminded me of some lady from one of their games. She just seemed…”[break][break]
Haunted memories of other green eyes. They swirled tea, reading books. That woman wanted to be an actress before the wrong fisherman wondered into her life. She looked some place a child could never see.[break][break]
“…sad.” And then, he never saw her again. Not as she was then. Not until after an evil thing forged its pact with her. She chose a dark road, laden with strife and poison. Fitting, then, that he would find her here, playing the role of a villain. Ballonlea’s Witch.[break][break]
“You’re a bleeding heart.” Crystal admonished him. “She was a Rocket when she sold you those flowers. Nobody stumbles into a god’s service. She’d been at it for a while.”[break][break]
“That Jayden fellow sounds fun.” Said Zaria, although she said the words with no joy. “Wish I had my sword.”[break][break]
Ahead, at the edge of the wood, dark creatures spied the coming of the heroes. A red-eyed cat poked his head out from a bush, seeing them approach.[break][break]
“Har. The heroes are coming, just as the Witch said they would.” The creature licked his lips, eager for the plunder promised by the ruler of these woods. His pick of her treasury, a favor with her magicks, whatever his heart desired. All he had to do was stop them, and steal one of their number.[break][break]
“Benny, I thank ye for yer leal service to our cause.” An Orbeetle, one of the cat’s partners in crimes, saluted. You know the bad thing about heroes? They like to talk. They pour their hearts out to one another. It blinds them to dangers anyone should see coming, like bandit kings in the wild places of the world.[break][break]
Dynergy from a nearby power spot pulsed. Benny the Orbeetle grew, and grew, and grew. He roared, sending a flock of poisoned birds fleeing for the hills.[break][break]
“Another one!” The rider shouted. “Zaria! Here! Best I can do!” He tossed her Ironsides’s feather. It would serve as a sword, for now. “How…how the hell do we pull that thing down?” It floated above them, peppering the heroes with fire and hail.

“I remember watching Galar’s playoffs every year, back when I was a kid.” The Rider reminisced. “It was the only time you got to see pros pull out their crazy mons and strats.” In those days, seeing fully evolved Pokemon, much less well-trained Pokemon, was a rarity reserved for cinema and sports. War was a sport. Each of a professional trainer’s main Pokemon were celebrities in their own rights. When they Gigantamaxed in Wyndon’s arena, it sent people into a frenzy.[break][break]
When the same happened in Hoenn, Navy imagined their would be a frenzy. He imagined people scrambling for the hills, desperate to escape the chaos. How many would die because Rocket and League alike couldn’t leave well enough alone?[break][break]
That’s the story of their whole damned universe, if you ask him.[break][break]
“That aside, don’t know Cross at all. I’ve seen Fiorelli a few times, and…” And the mercy he showed her cost Kyle his life. That price should have been Matias’s or his to pay, but instead an innocent was forced to bear the burden. “Anyway. Don’t know what they’re going to be like. Don’t know if they’ll be anything like they are in the world we come from.”[break][break]
He wonders if he’ll have better luck against Elisabeth here. She will not be the genuine article. She is meant for greater things than this fable, and her patron would not allow her to die here. Yet still, the thought of this fight fills him with dread.[break][break]

Hattori was in the ground. Dirt was thrown over him. At last, his shinobi could rest. With all the words said, Zaria and Navy walked back down the hill, mounted their horses, and started back towards Motostoke.[break][break]
“Has anyone ever told you that you’re a defeatist?”[break][break]
“Say again?” Navy said, more amused than offended.[break][break]
“You talk like you’re going to die before your war is done.”[break][break]
“I already died once.” He allowed that admission to hang in the air. With how much this woman seemed to know about him, and how much sharper she seemed to get with every crystal they found, he wondered if she knew that, too. Perhaps she saw Cillian Quinn pierce his heart.[break][break]
“Perhaps I can understand why you’re so reluctant to kill.” She acquiesced. “Most people go their whole lives looking for the answer to what’s on the other side.”[break][break]
“I don’t like talking about it.” He admitted. It was one of the few things Navy was content to shut his mouth about. [break][break]
“Fine, but you have to stop acting like you’re going to die. Think about tomorrow.”[break][break]
“Tomorrow’s for tomorrow.”[break][break]
“No,” Zaria insisted with more heat, “it isn’t. When we sleep at night, I see…I think I see your life.”[break][break]
“Hopefully nothing intimate.” He joked.[break][break]
“Eris needs you.” She insisted. “And the girl wearing your daughter’s face. The Liberator needs you, and Uxie’s chosen needs you.” A small pause. “Even that unknown child blessed by Azelf needs you. Your liege lord Goode will need you, once you win. If your kingdom wins, as you think it will, it will need you to help rebuild.”[break][break]
“Mhm.” He didn’t sound so sure.[break][break]
“Just make me a promise, if you want me to keep helping you.” Zaria had a good heart, Navy thought. He wondered if she would truly stop helping him if he refused her request. He doubted it, but it wasn’t worth testing the point. Not when so much was riding, for both of their worlds, on their success.[break][break]
“Fine. What is it?”[break][break]
“When the fighting is over, continue your education.”[break][break]
Navy brought Valkyrie to a stop. Zaria’s Rapidash carried on until its rider realized he wasn’t coming. She turned back, cocking her head.[break][break]
“Wait. Your big request is that I go to college?”[break][break]
“If that is what it’s called in your world, yes.”[break][break]
“Man.” He laughed. “You’re weird, lady knight. Anyone ever told you that?”[break][break]
“You can call me Cyan, when it’s just us.”[break][break]
“Cyan.” He tasted the word. “Alright. I’ll go to college. Don’t know how you’ll be there to see it, but I’ll live, go to college. Sounds boring.”[break][break]
“Your problem is that you have too much excitement.”[break][break]
…[break][break]
They made their way back to Motostoke, and roused their companions. The band of six were feasted. Folk raised their glasses in toast. Six, where once there were seven, rode on the road north of Motostoke. Blue once more gave way to purple.[break][break]
“The witch and the warrior-king will expect you to stop in Hammerlocke first.” Crystal said as they started. “I think your best bet is to head straight for one or the other.” A playful cat’s smile pressed on her lips. “It’s exactly what you would do, but I doubt they’d see it coming.”[break][break]
“Works for me.” Navy shrugged. “Ballonlea’s easier to get to. I know some routes through the Wilds.” He turned and beheld Howard’s massive pack of gear, piled like some great tower threatening to topple.[break][break]
“Think we’ve got enough supplies for the trip?”

A quiet hill sat just south of Motostoke. When the poison first receded, during the tenure of the heroes, it had a beautiful view overlooking a lake. With blue skies returned to Galar, so too returned the view. It seemed a suitable resting place for a hero.[break][break]
Navy’s spade dug into the earth, finding it soft and easy to turn. The Navidsons, according to his father and grandfather, were farmers in Hoenn before Slateport developed into a metropolis. Working the land was in their blood. Even if the earth was pulled for grim purpose, he found the work satisfying.[break][break]
“When Howard and you were making your plans, you called our band the Magnificent Seven.” Said Zaria while Navy worked. She had volunteered to help, but he waved her off. Instead, she kept him company. Valkyrie waited at the bottom of the hill.[break][break]
“It’s from a movie. One of those Unovan movies.” Said Navy.[break][break]
“You like movies quite a bit, don’t you?”[break][break]
“Best way to tell a story. Kyle’d say it’s video games, but he’s got bad taste.” Navy dug down. Not much farther and he’d hit six feet.[break][break]
“Tell me about that one.”[break][break]
“What, the Magnificent Seven? It’s a classic. Based on this Johto film, Seven Samurai. Good stuff. A town can’t defend itself from bandits, so they hire someone to help. Don’t really have money to pay, so the ones that do it, do it out of the kindness of their hearts.”[break][break]
“That’s very noble of them.” Zaria listened with childlike enthusiasm. She must have loved stories.[break][break]
“Some folk say cowboys and knights have a lot in common.” His lips quirked in a sneer. “Those folk are idiots.” Zaria blinked. “Anyway. Four of the seven die. They die will, but they still…”[break][break]
“Hattori died well.” Zaria assured him. “Kyle died well.” It was Navy’s turn to blink. His work paused, the shovel buried in the earth.[break][break]
“How d’you know how Kyle died?”[break][break]
“I don’t know how I know.” She said. “I just know that I know.”[break][break]
“Huh.” He grunted.[break][break]
“War is coming for your Hoenn, Navy.” She said, serious. “And more than four will die defending that place. Hundreds. Thousands.”[break][break]
“Not if I have anything to say about it.”[break][break]
“What if you meet Howard on the battlefield? What of the man who killed you, or his husband? Could you make either of them a widower?”[break][break]
“Probably not.” He admitted. “But I can take their punches ‘til they get bored and run off.”[break][break]
“And what if that isn’t good enough?”[break][break]
“Look.” He faced her fully, jumping out of the hole he’d dug. “The kind of movies I like the most are Paldean westerns. You know why? They’re authentic. Real. The Unovan stuff, it’s clear-cut. Concrete. Good guys, bad guys. You see a Wayne flick, you know he’s the good guy. The film’s never gonna cut to the guy he killed and show you him goin’ home to a starving family. It’s not gonna make you remember they’re human too.”[break][break]
“But the Paldean ones? Oh yeah. You see stuff like that. I told Goode I’d fight. I tell Freya,” he simply assumed Zaria knew who freya morningstar was, given how much else she seemed to know, “that if she don’t want me to fight, she’s gonna have to throw me in jail. I mean it. But when I fight humans, I don’t kill. I’ll stop ‘em. I’ll arrest ‘em. If those Dark Triad guys or Eternatus’s cronies show up, I’ll do my best to put ‘em in the ground. But Temp? Cil? Hell, even crazies like Delarosa? Them I won’t kill.” He was quiet for a while, listening to the song of the wind. “It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man. You take away all he ever was, and all he’s ever gonna have. All he’ll ever be is the thing he was the second you killed him.”[break][break]
“You stole that from another movie.”[break][break]
“Yeah, I did.”[break][break]
“You killed men on the train.”[break][break]
“We’re in a Unovan flick.” He grinned. “And the awful truth is, I’m good at killing. Some part of me enjoys it.”[break][break]
“But you don’t kill in your world?”[break][break]
“In my perfect world, I’m bored senseless. Guess I’d be a lot like a rusted sword.”[break][break]
From her quiet smile, he thought she liked that answer.

As Navy knelt to mourn his fallen shinobi, the crowd behind him began to cheer. There was a lesson in there, for a man more cynical than he. The love of the people was a fickle thing. He stubbornly ignored that lesson, instead hugging Hattori close.[break][break]
“Thank you.” He whispered to one who could no longer hear him. “I promise I’ll see you soon, Hattori. If you see Gabe or Kyle, tell them to wait for me. I still have work to do.” Whether Hattori waited for him in the waking world or died in this fable, the frog still deserved to hear the words. Only then did he pick up the crystals, stand up, and turn to the crowd.[break][break]
“Motostoke, your champion has returned.” They cheered him. “Go. Spread the word. The Pale Rider is here, and we move against all who serve the poisoned dragon.” Some from the crowd ran to him, returning his gun and his axe. Armed once more, he turned to Zaria.[break][break]
“You shouldn’t have swung at her. Your blade-”[break][break]
“We’ll talk about that later.” Zaria assured him, her voice sounding as if she aged years in the span of the trial. “For now, your people need you. A hero’s return is cause for celebration.”[break][break]
“They’ll want a feast, once the city’s cleaned up.” Crystal turned to look at the clear sky above them. “It seems her portion of the corruption in Galar is gone. A shame we don’t mean to return to Wedgehurst. It would be easy going."[break][break]
“Howard, Crystal.” He looked between them. “Would you two see about things here? I have to see about things in the city.” The Rider waved to his fallen friend. “I have to bury Hattori.”[break][break]
“You don’t waste any time, do you?”
