He wasn’t going to sit back and let Howard die. Navy steadied himself in his defendant’s box. To leave it meant he, too, would be at her mercy. To move would be to die for his ideals, singed by Penelope’s truth.[break][break]
“Hell no she isn’t.” He jumped the booth. Shocked gasps went up around the courtroom. It bought Howard a little more time. Chi-Yu’s fire raged out, finding a new source of fuel. It hungered for Navy, its supposed ally, its strongest soldier from Galarian myth.[break][break]
“I accept me, but I don’t accept the world’s gotta be this way. I’ll burn, and the folk behind me will know peace.”[break][break]
He closed his eyes, and had faith. A shuriken grazed Penelope’s cheek. Had she not turned her head at precisely the right moment, it would have found true purchase.

Howard flew from his seat, seized by terrible power. He revolved like a globe, dangled over the courtroom like a fresh-caught Magikarp. Chi-Yu cried in mad rage, swirling about in the air with all the fury of an erupting volcano.[break][break]
“I have accepted what I am.” Said the Dark Queen. Whatever fury his words rouse, she will not afford him the victory of hearing it in her voice. “You and your hero cling to ideals, as if you’re any better.” Flames lick at Howard’s boots. “I hold you in contempt.”

“This is a kangaroo court!” Zaria shouted from where she was chained. “You’re playing with your food!”[break][break]
Crystal strained against her owned chains, trying to get close enough to address the knight. She whispered words meant for her and no one else in the room.[break][break]
“Shhh. I think I see his plan.” Yet still, the eyes of the Queen were upon them. She raised her hand, as if to conjure flames and burn them both.[break][break]
“Hey, hey, hey! Penny!” Navy shouted, desperate to return her attention to him. “They’re not the ones on trial here. No burning.” The flames quieted into a low burn along her palm.[break][break]
“Another outburst and I hold your whole band in contempt.” The punishment for that crime was the same as the others, he imagined. Nothing less in her pristine pile of ash, left for those who would come after them to rebuild.[break][break]
“Alright, sure. What’s next on the docket of crimes?”[break][break]
“Envy,” she said as if that should be obvious, “of kyle lopez and Melody Miro.”[break][break]
He blinked.[break][break]
“Come again?”[break][break]
“Where were you when Sootopolis was taken from us, Navidson? Where were you when the Three Days War decimated the region you claim to love? When Hoenn was trapped in a bubble? What did you do when Slateport was attacked?”[break][break]
Another scene played out across the sky. Slateport burned, and Rocket ran like animals across the docks. Kyle stood there, a younger man armed with two Poochyena.[break][break]
“Alpha, Taunt. Echo, Yawn.” His best friend shouted. Surrounded by monsters, he used his mind. He clawed his way through Silas Blackwell’s attempt at new world order. “Sorry, that’s the best I can do right now.” He said to a woman who, in time’s flow, would be blessed by Celebi.[break][break]
It cut to him, in a train with other civilians. He was much younger, his hair gelled and blue. Gabe huddled beside him, holding his hand. Jumping up, he looked through the window into the next car. People were fighting. Bailey Cooper, who in time would be Hoenn’s champion, was in the heart of things, making hard choices. He could have told Gabe to stay down. He had Ironsides. Instead…[break][break]
“Fuck this. No way Goode sent them to help.” He released Ironsides. “Cut up the roof.” He grabbed Gabe like a wolf protecting its young. Ironsides split the top of the train like a scalpel splitting skin. Mounting up, the bird took to the air, away from trouble. Gabe was safe, but others weren’t.[break][break]
The scene cut to the stands of a tournament – the tournament. Those with short memories might think the tournament in Lilycove to be the grandest in recent memory. Others remember the truth: the Hoenn Star Tournament. A warrior’s paradise. The best of both sides gathered. They fought with reckless abandon before cheering crowd. People whooped, beating their hands in the air in support of their favorite trainers. It was wonderful.[break][break]
Navy took off work to be there. Gabe sat at his side during the closing ceremony, when John Sullivan was crowned the champion. Behind him came the three runner-ups. Kyle, his best friend. Melody Miro, the woman who would become the mother of his children. MATIAS SILPH, who would bear the weight of all the earth on his back.[break][break]
He wanted to be there. He knew his own heart. He knew his desires. He wanted to be in the limelight, to don the warrior’s crown and taste deep of womenflesh. He wanted to dine, to fight, to fuck, to feel the heat of all their attention and adoration.[break][break]
“Kyle did AMAZING!” Gabe said with a smile. “And Melody Miro’s so pretty.”[break][break]
“Yeah.” Navy agreed, trying to hide his mood from the boy. “They did real good, kiddo.”[break][break]
“They have fought in the arena.” Said his judge. “Time and time again. When Hoenn calls, they answer. Each of them is a champion. Each of them your better. Each of them, you envy for their strength and the love of the public.” Her eyes moved to Howard. “And before you speak empty words, I will tell you why it matters. He is cast here in the role of a hero. Have you seen the actions of a hero? No. He’s just a little man, green with envy at his betters, eating at their scraps. The League deserves better. Galar deserves better. The Hero of Many Battles, who my children perished to save, deserve better.”[break][break]
“And what about the first time I came to Galar?” He shouted at her. “What ‘bout when Regice’s island showed up? When you and your damn council sent so many men and Pokemon to their deaths without even telling ‘em what they were fighting for? Dewford? Kyurem?” He gripped the edge of his seat, pulling reserves of strength he didn’t know he had.[break][break]
“Yeah, sure. My best friend got to be champion. People miss him when he’s gone. People say he was a good champion. And he was.” His eyes fell to his hands. He felt old in his grief. “A good champion, I mean. Melody’s a good one, too. I love them both as champ. Wanna know why?” He looked up again, eyes sharp. “Because the world can at least pretend it’s better, when they’re up top! Silph? Me? Nah. Nah, we’re not champion material. Maybe in Galar, but not Hoenn. Hoenn deserves someone better. Let Melody have the spotlight.”[break][break]
Even if he’d give anything to shoulder that burden. Behind him, the gallery whispered.[break][break]
“Once more, your defense is an admission of past guilt.”

People whisper in the street about the Rider. He's on trial. The Dark Queen has exposed him for what he truly is. She bares his heart before the gallery, up in her high castle.[break]
People always forget about the sewers. When your eyes are cast to the heavens, you forget about the refuse. The meek, the filthy, the low. I crawl through them. I have no shame. Anything, to approach her. Anything to free him. None of the others could slip through these pipes, crawl up these passageways. They would get stuck, if they could get here at all. They would be food for Rattata. I slip out of a privy, wiping myself off in a shower before the stench can give me away.[break]
The whole castle is busy. Everyone loves to see a hero cast down.[break]
Oh, my Lord. I am not your Hattori. I am a dream. I see his memories, this one who loves you so. I see the pain in your eyes when Cillian Quinn's knife pierces your heart. I too have seen a hero cast down in Hoennian dreams. I will not see you fall today.[break]
Just a little while longer.

“What are the charges?” The Rider stood in the traditional place of a defendant. Penelope presided over him, judge jury and executioner. Behind him was a packed courtroom. Navy thought he recognized their faces – those he once protected. Townsfolk from Motostoke wondered aloud how it could come to this. Their hero had betrayed them. He who once bore tidings from distant kingdoms had fallen to his base instincts.[break][break]
“Treason.” She accuses. “Murder.” She assures. “Envy.”[break][break]
“That’s a crime now?” Navy laughs at the absurdity of it all.[break][break]
“It is when you jeopardize the very League you claim to serve, Navidson.” She admonishes him, but it feels as if they are his own words. “You told your squire that you contemplated joining Team Rocket twice. You told kyle lopez and MATIAS SILPH that you would never covet the power of a god.” Her hand swept up to the empty space above the courtroom.[break][break]
Darkness gave way to color. It gave way to heat. Ironsides was dying. His brave steel bird, the finest sword of the modern age, died for him. Groudon pierced him. Groudon burned him. Groudon took so much from him in a terrible battle under the Volatile’s indifferent gaze.[break][break]
Navy stood in a secure room. skyler dross lost control of Groudon’s foe. It rampaged across Hoenn with the fury of an ancient thing once more asserting its own right to rule. A blue orb was secure in League custody. He could take it. He could get out of the building before anyone saw…[break][break]
“Eris has Mesprit.” He heard himself say. “She’d listen to me. I could get her help. Calm Kyogre down enough to listen…”[break][break]
He saw himself, young again. His tanned skin bore deep black lines. Primal energy ran through him. The waves answered his call, Kyogre sounded the drums of liberation. Matias, armed only with an incomplete red orb, died. The world drowned in his hate.[break][break]
declan walsh welcomed him with open arms. In time, he too died. The slate was wiped clean, and he died so that something better could bloom in his place.[break][break]
“These are your own thoughts. Your own daydreams. Your own wishes after Matias killed your Pokemon. You wanted to be an avatar and have the power to even the score. Do you deny that?”[break][break]
Every eye turned upon him, expecting an answer. It was time for the defendant to answer his first charge.[break][break]
“No.” He said after a long while, meeting Penny’s eyes. “But I didn’t do it.”[break][break]
“Only because you were afraid.” She breathed the words like they were dragonfire.[break][break]
“I didn’t do it because how the hell could I look my Pokemon in the eye when I die if killed people over them?!” He shouted. Zaria, chained, recoiled. It was the first time she had heard him raise his voice since he awoke in this Galarian dream.[break][break]
“Yet still, you were capable of thinking it. What would your Visionary say if she saw how you envied her for her power, too?”[break][break]

“I don’t give a good god damn whether the Visionary thinks I’m a good person.” He fired with as much heat. “Like you always like to say, my queen, she’s a terrorist. She’s in Rocket. She’s done some bad shit. It’d be real easy for her, or any of her Rocket buddies to get their wires crossed. I have faith in her. She mistakes that faith for weakness, you bet I’ll show her strength.” [break][break]
Penelope opened her mouth to speak, but Navy wouldn’t afford her the words. Not here. Not now. [break][break]
“I’ll show you why I didn’t do it.” He cast his hand up to the heavens. Eris Halla lay sleeping on his couch. Reiner was curled by her, a lion protecting his cub. Navy lay a blanket over her, by chance, he felt the harsh outline of a scar across the girl’s back. He didn’t know who put that scar there - Rocket or some righteous hero from the League. [break][break]
She trusted him - trusted him enough to fall asleep on his couch despite her wounds. She loved him, and there was a part of him that would use that love to drown the world. [break][break]
Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki flashed into view. Crystal roused in her chains, looking up at the other Michael Navidson called daughter. She, too, bore scars. The vision flashed to a battlefield. She walked arm in arm with Michael, the Wroth, into hell. She abandoned all hope of a better life. [break][break]
Kyle looked at him with sad eyes. [break][break]
“Yeah. I envy Kyle. Envied Tom. Envy Illeana…but I can be better than that.” His voice shook with fury. “I have to be, or every kid Rocket’s brainwashed onto the frontlines will think they’re right.” [break][break]
“So. You admit your guilt to one charge.” Said his judge.

With a word, my Lord has lost. They herd him and his fellows into the caboose like chattle. They are chained, and I know that I cannot save him. Not here, not now. Should I attack, the Dark Queen will see. The cyan knight of the sword failed to stop her, armed as she was with black metal from a fallen star. What hope does a small thing like me have?[break]
No. My Lord has placed his faith in me. There is a path. I am Hattori. I am a shinobi. Shinobi means one who serves.[break][break]
I wait. I bide my time. My Lord and the knight speak of movies. Once upon a time, there was a movie with a Greninja. Children wanted their own shinobis. Humans driven by greed bred them and bred them and bred them until stunted creatures like me were born. They went unsold and unloved.[break]
I huddle in the dark, squished in bag storage. Were I any bigger, I would not be able to hide here. Were I not burned black by MATIAS SILPH and his god’s flames, then the shadows would not hide me. I close my eyes and listen to the rumbling of the tracks. They’re a good enough lullaby.[break]
Hours later, the train halts. Humans speak in their queer tongue. My Lord and his fellows are ushered out of the train. I wait. I wait. I creep out, climbing to the roof. No one looks up. Humans are fools like that. I climb to the top of the station.[break]
Humans are screaming. Folk dressed in black accuse their fellows of crimes. Charges are read out. Pyres are lit. Men die screaming. Their burned bodies are left on the gate as a warning. It will be the fate of all traitors, the Dark Queen promises. They covet her. They covet her power. They covet her bond. They covet her throne.[break]
Should she harm him, I will covet her blood.

Whatever history the Squire and the Queen had was unknown to the Rider. He was too concerned with his own battles in the chasm to notice the clash between Howard and Penelope. So, despite their history and the many wounds inflicted upon one another, the Queen’s burning eyes were solely for Navy.[break][break]
“Tell your squire to quiet down.” She commanded, although she gave him no time to speak. “I knew you would return.”[break][break]
“Threw your lot in with Eternatus, huh, Penny?” Navy tried to smile with a dozen blades at his throat. “What happened to fighting Rocket?”[break][break]
“Don’t accuse me of treason when you ally with the Visionary. You ran from Galar, and you poison the League.” Her words scorched him with furious rebuke. “I’d kill you right now, if we weren’t a land of laws.” At last, she noticed Howard.[break][break]
“You and your squire will stand trial. Then Chi-Yu will burn you.” He knew his councilwoman, his queen, well enough to know she did not make such promises lightly.[break][break]
“Like hell.” Zaria barked. She pulled against the fiery bead’s compulsion, moving as if dragging a dead Tauros. Her arms jerked to the side. Men gasped as they realized her open defiance of the queen.[break][break]
Zaria swung her sword. Penelope turned to regard the lady knight as if seeing a fly buzz in her path. Flames burst from the ruinous beast Penelope’s side, and Zaria’s black blade shattered into a thousand pieces. They scattered like rainfall across those close to her. Navy shut his eyes, turning away from the particulates.[break][break]
When he opened them again, Navy saw his fellowship. Crystal had been seized. Four men held Vortigern at bladepoint. Roland’s sword had been seized. Men dogpiled Zaria as she fought like a cornered beast, unwilling to go down quietly. All his companions were held down except…[break][break]
“Alright. Alright. Got your word we’ll get a fair trial at Motostoke?”[break][break]
“Yes.”[break][break]
Navy faced Howard, praying the man could somehow read his intentions. There was hope – ironclad hope. They simply had to survive for now.[break][break]

Twenty men, all dressed in mail and armed with swords, turned to look at the open door. Twenty men, relaxing as they collected their tithes and leisurely returned to Motostoke, expected one man to walk three. Twenty eyes shot open in frantic, desperate desire to draw their steel.[break][break]
Zaria cleaved one from shoulder to stomach. Navy took another man’s arm off at the elbow. Men screamed. It was a scene from Valhalla, a warrior’s paradise. Both pivoted to the side, allowing Vortigern to ignite his engines and launch like a missile through the car’s walkway. The black dragon’s keen killing claws spilled lifeblood across the walls.[break][break]
Some put up more of a fight as the narrow passage turned into a mosh pit. Disciplined soldiers bared blue steel against black blades and an axe dripping with blood. Zaria and Roland danced – as much with each other as their foes. Both twirled, spilling to the side as Crystal shot arrow after arrow into the chests of men who did not anticipate an archer.[break][break]
“That one’s tired.” Navy grinned at one of the exhausted men, having had Zaria batter his sword arm ‘til the fellow could barely hold the weapon.[break][break]
Twenty men had been reduced to half that.[break][break]
The problem is that Hattori missed the twenty-first.[break][break]
She sat garbed in a dark hood. Amidst the carnage, she was perfectly still. She was the still surface of a boiling lake. Turning upon Navy, ruin manifested at her side.[break][break]
Flames singed Navy. Everyone, friend and foe, felt the inexorable pull of fate compelling them towards the Rider. Roland and Zaria turned mid-swing, their blades flying towards him. Even Howard’s halberd was compelled to sit at his knight’s neck. Vortigern’s claw gripped Navy’s shoulder. Every blade in the room was upon him.[break][break]

As they pass the Nihilego, a swarm of dead Sharpedo pass along on a path to nowhere. Crusted barnacles encase glass eyes which see nothing. They say they will never die, for death can only take you once.[break][break]

Maybe there’s a heart buried down there, but he’d let forty-five die to save fifty-five.” It’s unflattering to say that about someone who’s been fighting as long as FERNANDO SILPH has, but Navy listens to the wisdom of his heart. It tells him that Fernando Silph’s title would be the Iceman if the Dark Triad had sense, tact, or panache.[break][break]
“Freya cares a whole lot.” He smiles at the thought of freya morningstar. “Her heart bleeds all over the place, and that blood’s warm.” She reminds him of him, which is why he avoids her unless there’s an important matter to discuss. When people like them meet, fireworks fly. He trusts she’ll do right, in the end.[break][break]
“Livy? She’s too busy fighting the wrong enemy. Rocket’s bad, but every time we act as bad as they are, it’s a victory for them.” An equally unflattering assessment of PENELOPE LIVY, who would be his enemy if she knew for certain about Naomi Sato. “But she loves this region. She don’t want it to fall. She’s right ‘bout Rocket being terrorists and monsters, but she’s too hard on the dumb kids on the bottom.”[break][break]
Adjusting in the water, his voice grew lower and lower, like he might fall asleep. It was peaceful in these woods. It reminds him of eating hotdogs and marshmallows under an open, bright sky with Kyle. The thought makes his heart hurt, and not because of the scar tissue on the muscle.[break][break]
“I almost joined Rocket twice in my life. Once when I was seventeen, once after Sootopolis.” How odd that must sound to Isaac. “Someone in Rocket killed my brother. “Nobody’s as paranoid as my liege.” The words should have been an admonishment of PENELOPE LIVY, but they were spoken with admiration and a smile. For all the pain, fractures, and mistrust between the two, she was once his queen. Queen Penelope and King ollie morales presided over the best years of his life, and for that he would always love them.[break][break]
“Ride!”[break][break]
And they did. Trails of red, silver, and purple flame were left in their wakes. Spectrier, fastest Pokemon to ever ride across Galar, pulled out ahead of the rest. With gun in hand, the Pale Rider cut the figure of a hero. His long coat trailed behind him, billowing in the wind he kicked up.[break][break]
Only a lone guard stood vigil in the back of the caboose. At long last, the Rider was given a foe to fight. Aiming his gun, old instincts finally seemed to kick in fully. His aim was perfect. His perfection would never be put on display in a museum, but it was no less beautiful than a painting. The shot was visceral, trailing out across open air and taking the guard square in the heart. Chains burst out the other side of the villain, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he gurgled his last breath.[break][break]
The Rider was the first to jump onto the caboose, opening the back door so that Valkyrie could follow.[break][break]
One by one by one, his fellows joined him. Stray grain, surplus weapons, and other knickknacks lined the innards of the caboose. Valkyrie and the Rapidash could stay here, their part done for now.[break][break]
“Hattori.” Navy nodded to his most trusted lieutenant.[break][break]
“My Lord.” The Rider didn’t even see his Pokemon go. Placing his gun back in his holster, he turned to the rest. His axe, its keen killing edge gleaming in the light of a purple moon, was ready to get this business done.[break][break]
“I admit, old man,” Zaria smiled as she donned her helmet, “I’ve been looking forward to going into a proper battle with you.”[break][break]
“Leave some room for me.” Crystal said, drawing her bow. “With how you two move around, it’ll be hard to find shots.”[break][break]
“Not our fault you’re trying to be an archer in a closed train car.” Zaria laughed, her disdain for Crystal boiling down to simple banter between comrades.[break][break]
“Twenty of them, my Lord. They suspect nothing.”[break][break]
“Twenty, against us?” He thumped his chest, looking up at Vortigern and Roland. They spoke little, but their weapons meant business.[break][break]
“Ready, Howard? Even if these guys are Penny’s goons, they’re still people. Fighting people’s different from watching Pokemon fight.”

It feels like a thread is severed without strain. Somehow, it feels proper, like they’re being adults about this. It feels different from the dalliances of his youth, which ended in great strife or heartbreak.[break][break]
He finds he loves her for that all the more, as love is taken out of the equation.[break][break]
“For the best.” He says stiffly. “I miss him so much, Melody.” That admission threatens tears. He mourned their marriage once until his heart scarred. Kyle’s death is fresh. “And I’m sorry you have to smile and wave for the camera every day when I know you miss him, too.”[break][break]
She’s the best champion Hoenn could ever have at precisely the wrong time. She’s meant for peace, a time when the smile could be genuine. He takes solace in her heart, and that it will guide her to do the right thing even when the whole world tells her she shouldn’t.[break][break]
“You proved why you’re the only one who deserves his seat after what happened in the prison, though. Much as it pains me to see you have to do this.”

“Ain’t that the truth.” He remarks at the notion of keeping himself busy. Orders are orders, and he’s been forced to slow down. Think. Let other people step up for a little while, at least until Isaac and John Sullivan’s treatments stick. Between Suicune and Tapu Lele, he won’t be out of commission for too long. For all the apprehensions he has concerning Hoenn’s menagerie of gods, he does not deny their power.[break][break]
Shuwen appears, lowered into the water. The bear remains unconscious, slumbering like an ancient king waiting to return in an hour of great need. Without ceremony or modesty, Navy kicks off his boots and most of the rest of his clothes, slipping into the water and joining his bear. After his stint in prison, with so many allies and enemies mocking him for the notion that no one had to be hurt, he finds he cares little about something so banal as being half naked.[break][break]
It feels good. When Isaac works his miracles, his body feels whole again. His pinched, frayed nerves move like he had so much as cracked a knuckle. Muscles which scream from overuse hum and stay still. Even his leg, aching and scarred with a deep, white X-shaped gash, does not bother him.[break][break]
“Arceus, never been so happy to be cold.” He closes his eyes, trusting that Isaac will watch their backs while he and his Pokemon rest. “Feel like some folk are gonna try to take us both to task for some things, when the next assembly’s called.” The pool gives him clarity. His body feels whole, freeing the mind.[break][break]
“Hope you’re ready for a fistfight, ‘cause it’s gonna be one. They’ll probably talk policy ‘bout the war, how they want to divvy up avatars and Elites while we draw battle lines.” That he understands. He doesn’t enjoy that they have to march to war, but he understands the necessity of the task. People will die, and many on both sides will not deserve it when their life’s book is shut early.[break][break]
“If they can find time to try and dress us down in the middle of all that, they need to look out the window.” He speaks the words with a faint growl. “Or else they’re gonna realize too late more and more people will listen when Rocket says the League don’t care.”

A week passed in the blink of an eye. Navy would look back, when time resumed its proper flow, and have vague memories of a good week. Zaria trained Howard at warcraft. Navy honed his skills as a trainer. They would take turns rotating between the five Pokemon they had on hand. Valkyrie, Roland, Hattori, Vortigern, and the occasional Rapidash were all eager to help. Navy would don the role of an Elite, grounding him in the world he’s sworn to protect.[break][break]
“You’re getting better, bit by bit.” The hero remarked on the final night before the train was due to arrive. “Can’t run away and hide in your books. Nothin’ to do but train, wait, and deal with any Dynamax Pokemon who get too close to the power spot.”[break][break]
As mighty as the Dynamax Pokemon were, the group was figuring out its routine. Chain them, pin them, put them out of their misery. None of them found the work appetizing, or pretty to look at, but it was keeping Wedgehurst safe. Galar’s hero had returned, and he was determined that peace would have its day.[break][break]
“One more time, Crystal.” Navy whispered from the hill, each of them waiting for the rumble of the train tracks. “For the class.”[break][break]
“You can just admit your mind’s going, old man.” His daughter teased. “It’s simple. All the guards are concentrated in the passenger cars. I’ve never seen how the act while the train's moving, but chances are they don’t check the tithe much. Not like there's many renegades in the wastelands.”[break][break]
“Query: Is that why we did not stow away in the crates offered as tithe?” Roland spoke with a machine’s perfect cadence.[break][break]
“Yes. The dark queen is no fool. She has them check the cargo.”[break][break]
“So we make for the caboose,” Navy picked up from there, “Hattori sneaks up, gets a count of everyone in the train while we hide out. Afterwards, we clear the train. Car by car. Once we’re inside Motostoke? ”[break][break]
“See how far we can sneak. Then rip and tear.”[break][break]
“You two have all the subtlety of a mace.” Crystal laughed, not unkindly. “Good thing you two know how to handle problems once the weapons come out.”[break][break]
“Lord, lord!” Hattori croaked. “The train comes!”[break][break]
“Well, then.” Navy mounted up on Valkyrie, secured his guns, and rallied the rest of the magnificent seven. “Let’s ride.”

“The world knows a hero when it sees one.” Zaria offered, squeezing Howard’s hand. “Because she did not go gently into the night.” After saying the words, she stepped back and paid her respects. Who was she, to get between a man and his grief? Bowing her head, she said a quiet prayer for a forgotten hero.[break][break]
“I had but one Pokemon companion in life, I think. Passing strange that this is how we should find this one crystal.”[break][break]
“I mourn for a fallen Lycanroc. My great foe took her from me. I raised her from an egg ‘til she evolved at dusk. A finer pup you will never find.” She remembered this: it was rare in those days for a human and a Pokemon to bond. There had been stories of knights who bonded with cursed swords, or kings safeguarded by their shields, but few truly wild Pokemon bonded with humans.[break][break]
“I will go back now, back to our horses. Return whenever you’re ready.” And so Zaria departed in peace, leaving Howard alone with his thoughts, memories, and a story inserted into this world of myth. Whatever happened when they woke up, Shirley was a hero here. She fought bravely, and she died bravely. There was victory in that.[break][break]
Whether Howard returned with the amber crystal was up to him.
