Finally, after a ridiculously pitiful (and distracting) attempt to get the tent pitched (in more ways than one, as it turned out,) Emerson finally manages to get the stupid thing set up. "Alright," he huffs, hands on his hips as he looks at the tent in triumph before he looks back over his shoulder at caden maher. "It's done. Operation camp out is a go."[break][break]

It feels sort of like a death wish, trying to last out 'til morning in this place. So that's why he's asked the other to come with him. For the reassurance of a familiar face. And Caden usually seems so level-headed. So surely as spooky as the place is, it's bound to go better than the last time he was here.[break][break]

Right...right??[break][break]

"Seems like it's getting darker earlier than usual," he mutters as he finally takes stock of the place. Sure enough, the sun is dropping fast. The fog and general air of the place makes it seem even darker.[break][break]

A Night at the Movies [M]

it wasn't totally unexpected to find emerson at the movies alone. or anywhere else on his own either, for that matter. he was naturally prone to doing so - a typical loner. though he couldn't say that he was anticipating the theater to be largely empty on a night like this one. in the middle of spooky season, especially. there were only a few people there in the seats, which somehow made the ambience of the flick that much more unnerving. as unnerving as this sort of thing could be.[break][break]

aw, who was he kidding? em was a 'fraidy cat, no matter how corny possessed animatronics were as a concept.[break][break]

maybe he should've seen if Sen Hasegawa wanted to come? no wait, what was he thinking?? that jerkwad would've spent the whole two hours laughing his ass off at emerson. he was better off without. but then maybe...maybe it wouldn't have been so freaky. regardless, why was he the one to come to mind, anyway?[break][break]

silently, he endured. or maybe not so much. he couldn't help the way he jumped, and the few squawks of alarm that slipped loose as he squeezed his dedenne in his arms. dumpling, to say the least, wasn't to amused.[break][break]

when the lights finally rose as the credits rolled, he let out a sigh of relief. his fingers tucked a loose strand of red hair behind an ear as he glanced over at the other movie-goers sheepishly. he pushed himself up and stretched out his limbs. "it was somethin' alright," he muttered, eyes scrutinizing the barren halls. there was no way he could pass himself off as unafraid. not after the last two hours.[break][break]

he frowned as he failed to spot any clean up crew. somehow, that didn't make him feel much better.[break][break]

“No,” He huffs out a breath, rusty amber eyes darting over, “I don’t know.” Honestly, by this point, he’s losing the thread of it all.[break][break]

All he can focus on is the return of a heated mouth against his own, the eager return of the kiss, and then all of his thoughts scatter as Caden takes total control of the situation in hand. Among other things.[break][break]

It’s all he can really do to keep quiet until the moment the other retreats, and by that point it feels like a distinct loss. Smarter, sure, but Emerson curses himself a little bit for making the suggestion to go.[break][break]

His lips press into a thin line, suddenly awkward with the realization of the exact predicament he’s found himself in. Face red, his fingers curl against the table edge as he attempts to discreetly shuffle out of the booth seat without being distinctly noticed.[break][break]

But then he remembers— they are in a bar on New Year’s Eve, and the chances are that, like him, not many of these people are sober enough to realize just how publicly indecent they’ve been behaving.[break][break]

Still, his winter jacket is draped over an arm and carefully held in front of himself instead of putting it on. This is fine anyway. His face is flushed and his skin is warm. A combination of liquor and want.[break][break]

The cold air will be good.[break][break]

His other hand, in an act of fleeting boldness, reaches back for Caden’s so that he can pull him out of the crowded, smoky bar and into the night air. Thank god his apartment is close.[break][break]

“Let’s go, then. Don’t want to keep you waiting.” Though obviously that hadn’t really stopped the other up to that point.

Platitudes about how he maintains a healthy-work life balance? The reminder of JAMES BAKER’s remarks this past winter about working less and interacting more float to the front of his mind, but they ease out like a retreating tide.[break][break]

“I don’t find that to be a particular sticking point for me, sir,” he says instead. Carefully, he reaches to tuck a strand of bright red behind one ear. “I’ve never really been the sort to keep a wide social calendar, nor share in my endeavors outside of necessary parties.”[break][break]

He’s somewhat of a recluse, he doesn’t add aloud.[break][break]

“Being on my own has never really bothered me, and I find that progress and discovery are often worth the calculated risks when it comes to the reward in satisfaction.”[break][break]

Is that believable? From a tiny guy who hasn’t really made it all that far yet? Probably not, but it’s earnestly spoken. Mild as Emerson is, that intensity and curiosity exists.[break][break]

“Is it really an adequate goal if it isn’t set high from the start?”[break][break]
His head tilts, following the line of thought and the string of questions posed. It falls out of his mouth before he can present himself more modestly. “Well, of course I’m proficient.” Emerson, no matter how socially shy he might’ve been, was far more egotistical than most might assume. He knew what he could do in front of a computer. He knew he understood technology in a unique way.[break][break]
Perhaps it is because of who he is seated in front of that he can’t manage to stifle that side of him. The side of him that had made him successful as a hacker, beyond his normal day to day work in freelance IT. Em wanted to succeed in this. His stilted meekness faded, as it so often did when his occupation was involved.[break][break]
“I’m in this career because I enjoy it. I enjoy measuring myself against what I can improve upon, how I can go further. Technology and science develop at a rapid pace.” He taps at one temple. “I like to keep up. I like to be in front, if I can help it.”[break][break]
And this was the sort of company that would provide him the opportunity, no?

Emerson sat there on the edge of his couch, knees bouncing with the steady hum of nerves and irritation. The spam emails made sense, the post itself had made everything all perfectly clear. Even if he’d managed to get it taken down, it had still sat there. Causing speculation. Making people think.

Despite his annoyance and anger, as soon as Sen’s face appeared on his own screen, Em felt his stomach drop at the sight of him. Which only incensed the redhead further. No, no. It was unfair that he still looked good. How come the knowledge that he was Sen couldn’t immediately uglify him in Emerson’s eyes?

What kinda garbage was that?

And of course, Sen barely took a breath before the teasing began. In spite of himself, he could feel the lick of heat creeping up his neck, worsening the color in his face. Though maybe better disguising a mark on his throat that had been annoying persistent about not fading. It had made Em feel that much more mutinous in the moment.

“Don’t call me that,” Em hissed back, with all of the vitriol of a kid getting teased on the playground, so…not much. It was almost whiny, his sulkiness amplifying. “You know what this is about.” His arms folded across his chest, eyes fixing on the tiny camera at the top of the screen. “I want my tablet back, you ass.”

As Emerson scrutinizes him, he sees the moment it shifts. The realization that sinks into those dark eyes. It’s satisfying. Meek and awkward little Emerson, only occasionally able to reroute a situation so that he is the one calling the shots.[break][break]

“That’s what you want, hm?” Emerson coos in return, head tilting as they continue to attempt in keeping that slight distance from him. He leans forward, detangling a hand from his hair and chin perching in his palm as his elbow rests on the table. Amber eyes watch Caden carefully, “Will it be worth my while?”[break][break]
The smile on his face betrays the fact that he knows it will be. He’s decently drunk, and full of the heat that comes with desire. But there is a distinct satisfaction in turning the tables on the other. The press of his hand is still there under Em's shirt—present and existing to create the needling of impatience under his skin.[break][break]
He shifts inward, allowing the jostle to shift that hand lower. Spiking his pulse, breath hanging in his throat though he makes no sound. It’s like one big game of promiscuous chicken. “If you think it will be, then we should get out of this booth.”[break][break]
It’s a line that should be delivered coyly, heavy with intent. But for better or worse, clever or not, Emerson is still Emerson. So it comes out matter of factly, instead. A simple suggestion rather than heady flirtation.

At one point in the few days that had followed Sen’s departure from his place he’d thought about scrolling on it rather than his laptop, but when it didn’t immediately turn up where he thought he’d last left it, Em was quick to give up. It must’ve been somewhere else in his apartment, and he was far too lazy to actually get up. And by the time he had, the thought was a long forgotten one.

No, it wasn’t until a post popped up on his twitter that Emerson’s realization came crashing in. He had definitely not been the one to post that. Using his porygon-z, and some extensive diagnostics, it was relatively easy to trace the location, and what tech it had come from. But where had it gone?

He tore apart his house, which only confirmed that the tablet was nowhere to be found. Which meant that the last person who had been there apart from him had taken it. Which meant that his last ditch belief that the Sen he’d met was a different Sen wasn’t true after all.

This was Blossom, alright.

Fuming, he stabbed at the messenger icon on his desktop until it popped open. Rather than just type his ranting out, he slapped the video call button next, then did a little key combination to override the need for approval on the opposing end. A video chat popped open, Emerson’s face bright red and frustrated appearing on Sen’s screen. In all of his frazzled, tousled hair glory.

“You’re a little shit, you know that??”
