"Sorry!" Em squawks at Caden's outburst. "I didn't mean to, but it should help!" Oh god, what if it doesn't work the way it had the last time he was here? What were they gonna do--[break][break]
Luckily, this isn't the case.[break][break]
Caden tears into movement (and Emerson definitely doesn't blame him for that.) Suddenly, he's being yanked forward by the arm, and the little redhead lets out a yelp at the almost painful, panicked tug as he stumbles over his feet.[break][break]
"Wait, wait, slow up!" he whines, reaching to grab his own back from the other. He wanted to make a joke about their bad idea, but it felt like that might go over badly.[break][break]
Em looks back over his shoulder to see the marshadow dutifully following - but he'll deal with the new addition once they get back to the rift.[break][break]
"I'm sorry." They repeat it, voice pitiful. Quiet, and a little guilty.[break][break]

He’s made it back to camp somehow, stumbling his way through the mist. Emerson knows it, because he abruptly trips over something and goes crashing to the ground. “Ow..” he mutters pathetically, knees stinging. But it was his bag. [break][break]
His heart thuds as he scrambles to unzip the pouch and there it is—right on top, as he’d thought. Clutching the tag, he frets over how to get back to Caden with all of this mist when he notices those red eyes again. He stares back, and soon the marshadow drifts into sight. “Show me the way back.”[break][break]
He doesn’t know who he is to make demands like this, but for some reason, it obliges.[break][break]
The sudden glow of the attack from caden maher’s musharna helps, and he darts forward, feet thudding against the gravel as he follows the remnants of glowing MOONLIGHT. The marshadow drifts to the side, expectant eyes continuing to assess Emerson silently.[break][break]
Out of shape as he is, his breathing is winded and face flushed by the time he nearly collides with Caden again, but now he’s triumphantly holding the CLEANSE TAG aloft.
“See! Told you I’d be right back!” He holds it out, and pulls his dedenne’s pokeball free of his pocket. “Light this up for me!” Lightning should have the same effect as fire, right? The static of Dumpling’s PARABOLIC CHARGE flares to life and singes the tag.[break][break]
With luck, it should free Caden from that supernatural bind holding him in place. Still out of breath, Em plops to his knees as he watches the result, mouth hanging open.

🗺️ THE CLEANSING TAG can be used to help cleanse a portion of the vestigial spirit of wo-chien, ting-lu, chi-yu, or chien-pao. it can also be used to help ward or mitigate any malevolent force.

He nearly balked at the blunt response. His eyes went found, and if he hadn’t already been flushed, he certainly was now. “I know how to dress!” he squawked back at him, and because life hated him, the bell on his neck jingled merrily as he shifted forward.[break][break]
There was some truth to Sen’s claim, though. Emerson didn’t typically dress in such flaunting ways. He was more apt to be found in loose clothing that swallowed him up and hid him away. Normally this sort of attention made him uncomfortable, but when it came from Sen, it was provoked a confusing mingle of haughtiness and satisfaction.[break][break]
Em’s face scrunched up in a defiant pout, and he pointedly looked away when he was caught staring. Not that it was all that difficult to catch him in the act, blatant as he was being. “Yeah, I’m sure you like to think so,” he grumbled, arms folding tighter across his chest.[break][break]
And then the situation threatened to tilt out of his favor. The idea of Sen leaving his bubble was both appealing and unpleasant. Finding someone else to spend his time with was inevitable, but it made something ugly coil up in Emerson’s belly. Green-tinged, though he wouldn’t give Sen the satisfaction of admitting it.[break][break]
He stepped closer, almost toe to toe with the taller boy. His chin tilted up, bottom lip puffing as amber eyes narrowed at blue ones. He was not sloshed enough for this. To blame any decision on drunken indiscretion. What he wanted was to be unbothered, and apathetic. Let Sen wander off into the party like he’d just insisted.[break][break]
“Not even the tiniest bit.” But the firm retort wavered. A wobble in his voice that told on him, edging toward coyness rather than coldness.[break][break]
Stupidly, he wanted the attention. The heat of a stare on him, even as he attempted to rebuff Sen. How far would he go in a bid to pull Em’s favor? He had to wonder.

Emerson, meanwhile, scowled. His face flamed with color, probably making him a blur of red on the opposite screen. Red hair, red skin, all angry, embarrassed red. Ooh, the other was just looking for a reason for Emerson to get back at him more than he already ways.

But then he spoke, again in that self-satisfied tone, Em’s mouth clicked shut and he avoided the stammering that threatened to roll loose from his tongue. No, this was cruel. He was infuriated with himself, with the way Sen’s words shifted something inside of him like the ker-clunk of a car’s stubborn stick shift. “Yeah? Well, uh- good.” His stomach twisted itself into knots.
Nervous. Stupidly eager.

He knew what he was doing.

His scowl deepened as he looked back toward the camera. He didn’t exactly want to indulge Sen, purely for the fact that he was infuriating, and it would only be rewarding him for pilfering Em’s stuff. But—

“Yours,” he replied, swift and clipped, “you think I’m gonna let you come peruse my things like a garage sale again?” What was he doing? He should have been reprimanding him for the utter audacity, not making arrangements.

Okay, baby. I won’t leave you begging. The stupid croon of those words looped in his mind. God, how desperate was he to be swayed that easily?

[attr="class","star2"] Emerson only nods at the response. He’ll stick with the test, then. Breaking into difficult systems is what he’s good at, after all. Not that he expects this to be an easy peasy job.[break][break]
He enjoys being presented with a good challenge.[break][break]
Amber eyes study the screen Silph opens up. Acutely examining the diagram, already looking for any holes that he might be able to exploit.[break][break]
“Perfect. Let’s see if I can be impressive.” An amused smile hooks at the corner of his mouth. The meeker side of his nature dissipates when he works. In front of a screen is where he thrives.[break][break]
As expected, though, the system isn’t easy to crack into. His fingers float over the keys at a rapid pace, smooth as he tries different key combinations and methods. Streaming code cascades down the screen. Rather than use any provided tools, Em patches in his own porygon-z, and Glitch duplicates the virus he builds.[break][break]
Soon enough, or maybe it took a while– he loses track of time when he’s in a zone– he sits back and looks toward the CEO. The mouse hovers over an encrypted folder, one that opens with no issue when he gives the mouse a click.[break][break]
“There ya have it,” Emerson remarks, rolling his neck side to side so that it cracks and releases pent up tension. Phew.

Panic races through his system as his stare remains locked onto Caden. “W-what do we do?” Otherworldly energy curls around them. Reaching out through the mist with oppressive force.[break][break]
Ghost. Is it another ghost? This feels wholly different from what he’d experienced at the waterfall, though. “Wait–” That was it![break][break]
“I think I have something.” He pats his pockets, but the cleanse tag isn’t there. “J…just stay right there! I promise I’ll be right back!”[break][break]
The tent is right behind them, so it must be there in his bag–on top of the clothes haphazardly shoved in the main pouch. But when Em turns around, he finds himself swallowed by the mist. “Wha-?” He hadn’t moved that far…had he?[break][break]
“Caden?” he squeaks out, eyes locking on the pale red glow of another set of eyes. Though he has no idea that it’s the observation of an impartial marshadow, spectating.

Honestly, Em wouldn’t have faulted the poor guy if he’d resorted to the baser act of violence. And really, he wouldn’t even snitch! He’d carry that secret to the grave– and probably never set foot in society ever again. But the point was, Emerson could empathize. Two seconds in and he could already tell this client was a piece of work.[break][break]
And well, the worker bees had to stick together, right?[break][break]
Em’s wide eyes darted to the man when he caught the muttered complaint about his age. Of course he was gonna doubt all of Em’s skills now. He resisted the urge to blatantly roll his eyes. “I’m sure between the two of us, we’ll get your systems up and running, lickety split!”[break][break]

He fished in his pocket for a pokeball. “Oh! But it’s okay. It’ll be a little tricky, but Glitch should be able to help recover some of the original installation programming.” The released porygon-z floated alongside the redhead, waiting for instruction. Em looked back at Wren. “I’m, Emerson, by the way. Which one’s the main server?”

Sen Hasegawa

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]He really didn't know where this guy got off. It was like he was practically asking on his knees to have all of his systems wiped, and corrupted. (He pointed ignored the afterthought that there were better things Sen could be on his knees for.) Emerson, though, was terrible at this sort of face off. He could work in the background with terrible efficiency.

But charm and snappy come backs?

He was too miserably awkward to be quick with those.

Maybe if he hadn't used the webcam, and kept it to typing he would've fared a bit better. Belatedly, he began to kick himself.

And Sen seemed to sense that weakness like a shark smelling blood in the water. What did he get from this anyway, Em wondered, except some sick sense of entertainment?

His cheeks puffed with an unspent breath of frustration, and he deliberately looked away from the webcam as he stewed over what was suggested of him. Though his head didn't turn back toward Sen, after an elogated moment, his glance slid back sideways. Sullen, but bright amber eyed the lousy, stupid, hot man as Emerson's pride got thrown out on the stretcher. His lips set in a huffy pout.

Nothing he'd said, or would say would work, except- "....please?"

Sometimes remote troubleshooting just wouldn't do the trick. It would've been nice in this case, considering he'd had to book it from Slateport to get to this gig at a reasonable time - the man's impatient voice ringing in his ears.[break][break]

"I can't do it, you're going to have to come look at it. This guy here doesn't know what he's doing." As if hearing something like that would endear Emerson to his plight, and not to the poor mechanic stuck with his hands tied and suffering the man's company.[break][break]

Burrito clamped between his teeth, the redhead pulled the wheel of his IT van hard, peeling into the office lot so that he could scarf down the rest of his lunch before he headed inside.[break][break]

And what a sight he met.[break][break]

Em gawked at the sight of the raised wrench, sucking in his lips to avoid a hoot of sound slipping loose. It would appear he'd arrived at the right moment. "Uh, I'm here about the system reset?" Eyes moving from the older man to the other - who undoubtedly knew more about the problem.[break][break]
Hopefully Em didn't have stray bits of cilantro rice on his shirt.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]Em waves a hand, unbothered. "Offer stands, all the same. I don't doubt it, though. Silph runs a tight ship." It's a bit of a wonder - he can't imagine calling the big boss man by his first name.

While James is distracted by the large bird, Em notices his pawmot going toe to toe with a mini version of himself. An AM THRUST clocks the pawmo and sends it stumbling back for the catch.

He perks at the suggestion. Turning back toward James, he nods. "Oh, yeah - that'd be super helpful. Gods know I'd make a mess of it on my own." It's not his area of expertise, after all.
