“Frankly, I could never get behind that. Probably because it’s only skin-deep with people. Protecting others, that is.” She did not elaborate much on that, believing matters to be rather self-evident in that regard. Even this man only sought to protect those he could see from imminent danger. He was not building shelter for the homeless, finding work for the unemployed. That sort of thing.

Lash did not believe in heroes because of that. They lacked depth and sustainability to truly help people. That was why more often than not they ended up imposing their will on others or fighting them. Those people fighting on the ground there probably could get along if they properly addressed matters instead of trying to be heroes -or villains – of their own story. “I am always careful. That’s how I stay alive,” she continued, definitely speaking well beyond her apparent age in this. “We probably should not make such an enticing target all the way up here, considering that. You did make it sound as if you clearly do not currently control this airspace, after all.” Especially considering that she could already make out something flying not too far ahead of them. Question was just what faction they belonged to. She hoped Rocket, just so she could slip away one way or another.

“One doesn’t have to have actual sisters to be a big one,” she just replied with a bit of a shrug. “Besides, blood relations are generally overrated anyway. You can’t choose family and they are just as capable of deserting you as anyone else.” There was a bit of genuine….annoyance in her words. Not true resentment, more a sort of apathy that was only broken by some irk. Lash was not one to talk about family much, even though she was not one of those people who came from truly broken homes, either.

She was just disappointed more than anything, really. “You don’t strike me as all that odd, though. At least not compared to anyone else in this place. Just normal people, some with quirks, some squares, some put into outlandish situations. But I would just call just about anyone in Hoenn pretty normal, all things considered.” Well, things were getting quite philosophical all of a sudden. She had to put a stop to that, at the very least. “But it is good to have my experience acknowledged, mhm,” she hence started, nodding to herself, in order to dispel that notion. It had taken this woman a few moments to realize it, but at least now she was giving her some respect. That was good enough.

“War is a waste. Especially in Hoenn, when stuff outside the scope of anyone constantly happens,” she replied, throwing up her arms in annoyance. All of this was just so annoying. Couldn’t they have their little spats after she was done investigating? It wasn’t like she was really taking either side here, anyway.

That included his insistence at following her around. She just started off towards the island proper, not accepting a race, nor rejecting it. “I can’t make you do anything anyway,” she hence started, accepting that she was only in charge of her own life. Lash just insisted that she was the one in charge of it in general. “Though I still don’t get the priorities here. Not like you could just follow me back to the mainland without giving up your spot here, anyway. It’s just…kind of stupid to try and keep people from coming to an island when everyone and their mom has a flying Pokemon, you know?”

“War springs up in Hoenn every few months. Kind of seems like you guys are making that a regular event. Then again, probably best to think of it as skirmishes, rather than wars.” After all, a proper war was something else. Sure, from what she had looked onto from afar battles to the death were not exactly too uncommon. But given the kind of destructive power Pokemon had, especially those legendaries, that was all pretty tame.

Still though, she usually would stay far away from those events to begin with. That was why she was hesitant to become some card-carrying member of Rocket. An organization should ideally offer protection. But in a war that mostly went past most civilians, the opposite was likely true. “Still though, it’s not like there are big signs in the air telling anyone it’s a war zone. People just attack others assuming they already know, I guess.” She shrugged, not letting a chance pass her by the jab at him for that. Her skin still slightly tingled.
Though given his reply, she did briefly rub her chin. “But still, if the legends are absent, then that probably means this is actually just some war over treasure. That probably should not attract distortions much. Unless one has spilled the treasure here, but given how short-lived they are, that would mean it probably would be gone already.” Seemingly having lost track of him for a while, her eyes did return to the old man soon enough. “I better not have gotten shocked for nothing here!”


Nikita Sokolov

Yeah, that man was not taking her seriously. She could see that. It wasn’t exactly difficult. He was like most men his age. They saw someone looking like a kid and immediately deemed themselves superior. If she actually looked her age and said the same things, he would probably just show her outright suspicion and drive her away. Yet, this felt somehow worse.

Ugh. Annoying. “I don’t really need an escort, but whatever, if you don’t have anything better to do, I guess? I can look after myself. Have to. No one else will. At least not when it is actually necessary.” Lash pouted, clearly irritated. In her opinion, she had every right to. After all, being stuck looking like this she could not exactly live a normal adult life of her own. And without a family willing to recognize her like this either, she had to make do still. People like this guy, they always acted like they cared, but their responsibility ended within sight. She didn’t blame them, per se. She was just annoyed by the hypocrisy.
“I don’t need convincing. I have conviction. If there is something that can help here, I will investigate. Else I will leave on my own. Not sure why people can’t just accept that simple logic.”

Ohhh, how ominous. He even left a pause. Really, some people were just so…urgh. Did he have to be this melodramatic? If he tried to impress her, it definitely fell on deaf ears. If anything, she seemed annoyed.

Which did not improve when he brought down his metaphorical hammer. “Uh…huh…” she hence replied, unimpressed. “Do you expect me to praise you for that or something?” Her incredulousness was clearly deadpan as could be. The larger male did try to intimidate her, but it was a tad bit obvious that it was what he was trying to do.

“Anyway, since you are a head ranger, I can probably just look your name up anyway, since you don’t want to give it.” She shrugged, again, lackadaisically. “Though if you are so important, why are you here harassing random people?”

Speaking of harassment, Murkrow did just that to its brethren, crashing right into the murder of krows while the other disappeared. In the ensuing storm of feather and body, it fly away with the others, blending in effortlessly.

Good, good, he saw reason. Lash was not sure if she should commend that or not. On one hand, that was something almost akin to common human decency, a rarity for the League in her experience. But on the other hand, he really should do his job better. If she was more deeply connected to Rocket, then even letting her any closer was probably bad.

Well, not her problem. “Well, I am looking for the usual. Ultra Beasts, wormholes, but mostly because those tend to attract space-time distortions. Rumour has it that one is brewing on the island. So, I came to check it out myself, a flyover maybe, that island can’t be all that big. Or is there something subterranean again?”

No response, eh? Well, that wasn’t unexpected. She noticed that girl slowing down and stopping the pursuit. “Thanks for being decent,” Lash called out before she got out of earshot, though whether that was meant in a genuine or in a sarcastic way remained to be seen. After all, she was still very much abusing this.

Then again, she only abused this because the League had decided that she had no right to go there. Lash did not care if they found a legendary slumbering turtle-pokemon that unbeknownst to man was actually the foundation of Hoenn’s landmass there, the remains of an alien spaceship that crashed there through a wormhole or whatever.

Lash just wanted to check for distortions. She was willing to beat up any League person that tried to get in her way, but she liked this too. Sometimes, one could win just through words alone, after all. Though, she definitely had to chuckle to herself. This small frame definitely did have advantages after all, didn’t it? With a smirk and a smile, she carried on. But she figured that this would not be the only obstacle, so she returned to her game-face soon enough.

“Thanks,” she said, while taking the bar from the other. For once, she did not make a snide comment about how that might look to an outside observer. It was okay to give random kids candies on this day, after all. Lash did keep her guard up a bit in that regard, but this was a peaceful place for the most part.

“Anyway, I’m Lash. And you could say that I have a good bit of experience.” Well, mostly with disguises and camouflage that helped stealing and poaching Pokemon. But this wasn’t too different. She was no master of deception, but she knew how to make cheap, adequate things to blend in. Plus, fashion was always important. It was what differentiated them from savages, after all.

Briefly, she watched those two still going at each other as if they were Ultra Beasts fighting for universal dominance, but she soon returned her attention to the one who had given her but a nickname as well. “You seem surprisingly inexperienced though. Do you just usually ignore this day? You do have a bit of a big sister vibe going on, so it’d be odd if you did not have younger siblings to take care of.” Lash certainly abused her appearance to just speak her mind like that. It would probably come off as rude from an adult, but this was just inquisitive, innocent rambling like this. Well, probably.

“I mean, a pervert would say that, too,” she replied, slightly pouting. Though his body language did speak of genuine resentment at the accusation. Not exactly a full proof, but since he was tucking away the handcuffs as well and getting off of his high horse, Lash was willing to give an inch. Not like she had to get any closer to him if she did not want to, after all. At a distance, he was probably safe to handle.

For now. While she fashioned herself an adult still, being stuck in this body had taught her that those could be incredibly caught up in their own world. Especially when they were confronted with someone seemingly younger. It would probably pay to play herself off as younger, then. But she figured that being a phony would just make him even more suspicious. And it wasn’t like she could take the expression given so far back, anyway. “Anyway. I am not sure I’d feel safe with the guys that electrocute strangers on sight, ask questions later. I would no say no offense but, um, kind of intended.”
Another pout, this one more deliberate. At the very least, she did nod at the ID. Only to then dismiss that. “Also, um, I have no idea how an actual League ID looks so you could show me your online license for officiating weddings complete with print-out priest….slip on? I don’t even know what they are called. But yeah, I guess it’s nice that you are against slaughtering children. Did you see anything very strange on the island so far? Wormholes, massive legendary Pokemon, space-time distortions? I am kind of just interested in finding the latter.” It was probably best to just up and ask. He’d probably say no one way or another, but maybe she could gauge whether or not he knew that way.

“Anyone can claim that,” she simply replied, shrugging. Could have sworn that was the right name. Well, not really. Honestly, she didn’t know at all. It didn’t quite matter to her, one way or another. If this girl did want to introduce herself at some point, she could easily enough do so.

Not that it would change things. Not like Lash could prove that she wasn’t with Rocket, either. Proving a negative was difficult at the best of times. Granted, it was more difficult when it was actually true, but only nominally so.
Hence, they did not slow down, either. That girl was not attacking yet either, which probably meant she was not the type to just up and do that to random strangers. Probably the best proof that girl could give that she wasn’t a jerk.

Didn’t say a thing about Rocket or League though. They both were capable of either being decent or rude, after all. “I could write ‘I am not with Rocket’ on the most official looking page of my notebook if that helps you,” she added with a shrug. “But what does it matter anyway? You might not care about the wonders of the world like distortions or infinity energy or whatever. I do. I am going to take a look for myself. The only thing that matters is what kind of person you are. Do you shoot at those that don’t antagonize you because of vague orders like a good little drone, or are you an actual person making her own decisions?”

“Ah, so being annoyed at being randomly suspected of some crime is now proof of the crime? Could you repeat that more clearly at the phone?” Honestly, what was that man thinking? That logic was almost insulting. He truly aught to die in a torrent of hellfire.

Once again, she scoffed at him then. “That’s just making you the worst of the worst. What is next? Are you going to beat up random strangers and accuse them of always having wanted to assault you if they fight you? That’s what’s wrong with all of you….argh!” Briefly, she stomped onto the ground. Lash had never gotten along with most figures of authority, but anything resembling police just made it worse. Those people, in her eyes, never took the world as it was, but rather how they wanted it to be.
And then they expected everyone else to conform to that. And, again, it did not matter that he was right. She could be innocent just as well and he would just as well do this. Heck, if she had seen a lot of customers in here she wouldn’t have gone in at all despite letting Murkrow do its thing. He’d just have picked on someone else. “Your name. Give it to me.” This time, she looked him straight in the eye, clearly having decided on a course of action by now.

Murkrow, in the meantime, was getting somewhat nervous about not being able to shake its pursuer. It was not going to let up, but flying at top speeds was tiring in the end. Semi-frantically, it looked around for an opportunity – and found one. A flock of other Murkrows picking up breadcrumbs in a park. That glint returned to its eyes and it dashed towards it brethren.
