The idea of living in a submarine soured Frank's excitement and nervous anticipation, but he brushed it aside with a laugh and shake of his head. [break][break]

"A submarine isn't my style, but I'll go visit to make my introductions to the rest of the upper brass and get myself situated with the financial situation," he said. [break][break]

Truthfully, he did not know anything more about Team Rocket besides what Cillian and @albrecht had mentioned, on top of ever-circulating rumors. Frank imagined a trip to the headquarters would open his eyes. [break][break]

"But uh, thanks, Cillian." He rubbed the back of his neck, looking somewhat sheepish about his gratitude. "You don't know how much I actually need this work. I won't let you down."

The right man for the job. That's right. Frank was absolutely the right man for anything related to finances. His company in Hoenn hadn't gone under because of his business acumen, but because of the fickle nature of a harsh, uncompromising field. [break][break]

"So if you have all the approval covered, what should I be doing?" he asked Cillian. "Besides continuing to smuggle stuff, I mean. Should I move to Sootopolis? Would that help?" [break][break]

Frank had a vague idea that not all members of Team Rocket did Rocket work full-time. DAMIEN RUSSO worked at a bar, for example. [break][break]

But what could Frank do? His business ventures had all been financial. He was highly skilled in that career, but not in much else.

Confirmation that he could avoid fights was all Frank needed to hear to feel relieved. Safe, even, as if such a thing existed within a crime syndicate. [break][break]

"Perfect. Yeah, I can do all that easily," he said, confidence swelling in him with every reassurance. [break][break]

The prospect of more pay if he worked in other fields at the same time prompted Frank to look around the back of the shop. Bronzong had finished emptying the truck of smuggled goods and hovered by the door, awaiting its trainer's next commands. [break][break]

"You know, this smuggling business isn't bad," Frank mused aloud to Cillian. "I like the people I work with, and even though there's always some downtime, there's always a little bit of thrill, too."

Frank had heard that sentiment before, though not with those exact words. When he'd worked as a stockbroker, his old bosses had reassured him in a similar way after inviting him to participate in lucrative and illicit activities. [break][break]

Their confidence and camaraderie had lured him into their trap back then in the same way Cillian's did now. [break][break]

Frank let out a shaky breath. Anxiety clung to him with desperate fingers as the familiar, delicious rush of taking a huge risk swept through him. [break][break]

"Okay then," he said, his smile both nervous and exhilarated. "I'm in. What happens next?"

They ran. Frank didn't know where he was going, nor did he care. He just dashed toward whatever looked like the safest location—which happened to be a covered bus stop. He released the girl as soon as they were safe under the roof, turning to see if the Palafin had followed. Miraculously, they had not. [break][break]

Frank sat down on one of the benches, sagging visibly with relief. "My head hurts," he complained, covering his eyes with a hand. "I'm dying, miss. My brain is so dead that I just hallucinated some Palafin coming out of a ring." [break][break]

His Rotom came to hover by his side, making distressed noises. [break][break]

"Leave me, Duke," the man continued, trying to raise his other hand to wave the Pokémon off. "It's too late." [break][break]

A rumble of an engine heralded the arrival of a bus. Frank sat up when he noticed the digital sign showing its destination. [break][break]

"Oh! This is my bus." Moving to board the vehicle, he gave a final wave to the girl who'd encountered the bizarre scene with him. "Don't let the Palafin get you, miss! Get home safely!"

"Well, no, it's just—" Frank started, before abruptly stopping himself. [break][break]

Just what? Did he truly think he could get away with this half-baked crime because it wasn't fully committing to the terrorist organization DAMIEN RUSSO hated working for? Did he think he could avoid staining his hands in this way? [break][break]

Frank sighed, his body slumping with the reluctant release of tension. "You can't blame a man for being nervous, can you?" he said, cracking a lopsided grin. [break][break]

"I mean, you're Team Rocket. You're the real deal. If I join you, there's no turning back. If I remain solo, then I can bail if things get hairy." And he'd heard the rumors of what happened to people when they fled from Team Rocket. [break][break]

Frank put up his hands in surrender before Cillian could reiterate himself. "But you're right, you're right. What's that phrase? Something about being stronger together?" He dropped one hand while the other rubbed the back of his neck. "It'd be stupid to keep doing this without a safety net, huh?" [break][break]

He could feel himself at the brink of agreeing. A final nudge, a friendly reassurance that everything would be all right, was all he needed before he caved.

Cillian had a point. Frank had been miserable for months, unable to live at the level of luxury he wanted. Forced to budget and save whatever he earned through smuggling, he'd return to his origins among the middle class. And he hated it. [break][break]

Still, there was one place Frank could not return to. [break][break]

"And prison, Cillian?" he asked, a somberness entering his expression that was not usually there. "I can't go back. Not again."

So Frank's hunch had been right. Cillian was not there to assist with the operation at all, but to offer Frank a place among Team Rocket's ranks. [break][break]

Part of him had been dreading this moment, wondering when it would come. Along with it came the guilt of continuing down a path he knew DAMIEN RUSSO would disapprove of—though Frank had often done things that disappointed the younger man. [break][break]

Yet another part of Frank was thrilled at the promised risk of greater crimes. The adrenaline and the payoff. [break][break]

"I was wondering if that offer would ever come," he said to Cillian, leaning against the wall nearby. "It's true that I need the money, but I don't know if the risk of joining your group is really worth it. You know my history, Cillian." His time behind bars, he meant. [break][break]

While the men talked, Frank's Bronzong proceeded to unload the truck, using its psychic powers to carry the smuggled merchandise into the back room.

Cillian Quinn's face was the last one Frank expected to see on the other side of that door. His heart jumped into his throat as soon as he saw the gun. For a split second, Frank was sure has going to die. [break][break]

Then the gun vanished into its holster and a knowing smirk graced Cillian's face. [break][break]

"An unfortunate series of events led me here," Frank said, not wishing to get into the very long story of his exact circumstances. "What are you doing here, Cillian?" [break][break]

Naturally, he knew of the other man's association with Team Rocket, but Cillian had never shown up for smuggling jobs before. Frank had always only worked directly with @albrecht or one of his close associates. [break][break]

Wasn't Cillian some terrorist bigshot?

Frank drove his truck through the back streets of Slateport City's lower district, heading toward a shop specializing in traditional medicine. But while the front portrayed a proper storefront, the back rooms provided ample space for the shop's true purpose: as a dropoff point for Team Rocket's extensive smuggling operation. [break][break]

Neither was it his truck, in truth. The crime syndicate owned the vehicle. He was only borrowing it for the drive to deliver illicit goods. Afterward, he had instructions to drop it off at a specific storage unit in Mauville. [break][break]

Upon reaching the shop, Frank parked behind it and cut the engine. After stepping out and confirming that the alleyway was empty, he released his Bronzong from a Pokéball and knocked on the back door. [break][break]

"Same-day delivery for a special customer," he said in a low voice, speaking the passphrase to the person who was supposed to let him in.

Frank counted it a blessing that Damien hadn't immediately rejected him and stormed off into his house. Even though his parents weren't home, he was old enough to have the sense to call the police on Frank. Instead, Damien's stammered question filled Frank with a surge of hope. [break][break]

An elation to match the boy's own, though Frank's was dirty with conspiracy and lust. [break][break]

"I do, but it would have to be a secret," he said quietly, taking a step toward Damien when the other didn't come closer. His pleading look morphed into a tentative smile. [break][break]

One that faltered at the reminder of the reality in which they lived. "I need to sort things out with Jackie first, and you're not even eighteen yet. You know what people would say." [break][break]

Releasing Damien's arm, Frank cupped the boy's face once more with his hands, forcing Damien to look into his eyes. An uncharacteristic seriousness entered Frank's expression. [break][break]

"I don't want to see you hurt any more than you're hurting now. And if I had it in my power to take away this pain, then I would." Leaning down, he'd press another chaste kiss to the corner of Damien's mouth, if allowed. "I can at least give you this."

Damien's reaction was expected, yet somehow, frustration laced the guilt that hammered through Frank. He stood when Damien stood, reaching out to grasp the boy's arm. [break][break]

"Wait, stop." A heavy sigh escaped his mouth as his face contorted in despair. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have sprung that on you. It's just—I don't know how to put it in words. I've always really liked you, Damien." [break][break]

Gently, he tugged on the boy's arm, urging him to draw close again. [break][break]

"Jackie and I aren't, uh, on the best of terms right now," Frank admitted, for the first time. Tensions had been high between him and his wife for months now, but never to the point where he thought to talk about it. With anyone. [break][break]

"Listen, she doesn't matter right now. You matter." Frank looked imploringly at Damien. "You matter so much to me, and I just want to make you feel better. In whatever way I can."

Frank shot Damien a knowing look. Even now, in the state he was in, the younger man attempted some semblance of toughness. Still, Frank thought him charming, especially since Damien was not pulling away. [break][break]

"I know. But you can't always be the one looking after people," the silver-haired man said as he folded up the handkerchief and tucked it back in his pocket. "Let me look after you sometimes, okay?" [break][break]

Once more, Frank's hand rested against Damien's cheek. Without thinking, he stroked the soft skin there with his thumb. Pale violet eyes lowered to the curve of Damien's mouth. Inexorably, he felt himself drawing closer. [break][break]

"You know I care about you a lot, don't you?" Frank murmured, mere inches from Damien's face. Heat flushed through him, from his ears all the way to his groin. [break][break]

And then, his heartbeat racing at the speed of sound, he pressed his lips against Damien's in a reckless, greedy act.

A twinge of disappointment ran through Frank when Damien withdrew from the hug. He felt colder, bereft of the warmth of the other man's body. Still, he forced a chuckle at Damien's apology. [break][break]

"It's okay. Don't worry about it. I have other shirts," Frank said reassuringly. [break][break]

Then he paused as his gaze fell upon Damien's tear-streaked face. What a shame, that such immense sorrow lined his youthful, handsome face. Frank wanted to take away all of Damien's pain and replace it with the usual sourness he found endearing. [break][break]

With the softness he was sometimes allowed to glimpse. [break][break]

Frank reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief. "Here. Let me help you. Hold still." [break][break]

Cupping the boy's jaw and neck with one large hand, Frank carefully wiped at the wetness on Damien's cheeks, cleaning away the tears, runny mascara, and snot.
