Frank had never heard cries like Damien's before. Damien sounded like a wounded animal, like something had ripped him apart from the inside. Frank didn't know how to feel hearing them; all he knew to do was hold Damien as hard as Damien was gripping onto him. [break][break]

His hand went from stroking the younger man's hair to rubbing his back. "I don't know," Frank murmured, genuinely not knowing what would comfort his friend. "I'm sorry." [break][break]

Even as he provided words and gestures of comfort, Frank could not help but notice the heat and weight of Damien's body pressed against his. It was more than pleasant; it was luxurious, a delicious sampling of an unlikely scenario he had silently desired for years. [break][break]

Frank's thoughts wandered, imagining a different situation where both men were pressed against each other in a different way. Naked skin, slick with sweat and other fluids. Fingers tangled together, his mouth pressed against the other's— [break][break]

Almost at once, Frank chided himself. Damien was in agony, in mourning. Fantasies of sleeping with his best friend were inappropriate at that moment. [break][break]

Of course, that did not stop Frank from pressing a soft kiss to the top of Damien's head.

Damien's request caused Frank to loosen his arms from around the other man, but only by a fraction. [break][break]

As the eldest of his siblings, Damien had always been tough. His acerbic personality and stubbornness were the products of having to grit his teeth and endure difficulties to ensure his siblings had what they needed. [break][break]

But Frank knew the softness that still existed in Damien. He'd grown up listening to Damien's worries and observing his vulnerabilities. No matter how much the boy darkened his beautiful face with a frown, he could not hide that part of himself from Frank. [break][break]

So Frank's hug only tightened. Lifting a hand, he began stroking Damien's black hair in a soothing gesture. [break][break]

"No one else is here. You're alone." [break][break]

It was unspoken permission to cry and feel weak. If Damien collapsed, Frank would bear him up.

After hearing what happened, Frank dropped everything and made his way to the Russo household. So urgent was his need to be at Damien's side that texting Jackie to tell her he'd be late coming home never entered his mind. [break][break]

He arrived to a whirlwind of emotional and physical chaos. The Russos were deep in their grief; he could barely get a word out of any of them. Eventually, however, he noticed Damien's absence from the house. [break][break]

Frank left and walked the familiar path to the overgrown park where he and Damien used to play as boys. [break][break]

"Damien," he called out as soon as he saw the figure perched on the culvert, head bowed. "Hey." [break][break]

Without waiting for a reaction, Frank sat down next to Damien and pulled the younger man into a fierce embrace. When he spoke again, his voice was strained with all the emotion of seeing his beloved friend in such a vulnerable state. [break][break]

"I'm so sorry."

Hazel's words clicked ideas into place in Frank's brain. "Of course! The right pair of gloves!" he exclaimed, beaming with a mix of excitement and relief. "You're a genius, Hazel."[break][break]

He fell into rapt silence as he listened to his friend's suggestions, nodding slowly as he absorbed the information.[break][break]

"Both of those sound interesting. I know I could do accounting well, and smuggling…" Frank shrugged. "It sounds fun. And you'd be involved, so you could show me the ropes."[break][break]

With another sip from his cup, he finished his coffee.[break][break]

"I'm going to think about it some more, but thank you for listening and for the advice. I mean that." His smile carried the weight of his gratitude. How lucky he was, to have such a good friend like Hazel.[break][break]

"Now, should we plan our Ultra Desert trip?"

The stranger's acceptance of his implicit invitation brought an even wider grin to Frank's face, one tinged with pride as well as pleasure. Nodding at Damien, he fell into step beside the other two men. "I'm down."[break][break]

The next couple of hours was a blur of alcohol, laughter, and lewd jokes to rile the appetite. Afterward, the trio made their way to a nearby hotel, where Frank paid for a room. He wasted no time shedding his clothes and shoving his two prizes onto the single king bed.[break][break]

He didn't get a wink of sleep that night, but he'd never felt more alive in four long years.

Frank's eyes grew wide at such a casual mention of Team Rocket. Those words had been the last ones he expected to hear out of Hazel's mouth. That could only mean his friend had some connection to the criminal organization.[break][break]

Frank could not help but wonder what a sickly academic like Hazel did for them. History? Recordkeeping?[break][break]

Taking another sip of his drink, Frank contemplated his response. Finally, he said, "I've actually thought about that before, especially given my criminal record. I told Damien I'd stay clean this time, but…"[break][break]

He ran a hand through his silver hair, weighing the pros and cons of working for a crime syndicate with the kind of reputation Team Rocket possessed. "He'd understand, I think. I hope."[break][break]

Frank raised his eyes to meet Hazel's once more. "What kind of work do you think I'd be suited for, knowing what I can do?" he asked.

One of the Pokéballs clipped to Frank's belt trembled, then burst open as the resident inside forced its way out. His Rotom, Duke, emerged in a flash of light and forced the Palafin to halt with a sudden SHOCK WAVE.[break][break]

"Duke?!" Frank exclaimed, surprised. None of his Pokémon had ever come out of their Pokéballs on their own accord before.[break][break]

Then he remembered the girl. "Yeah, yeah, I'm okay. Are you?" he assured her as he slowly rose to his feet, his backside aching from the fall.[break][break]

Around then, the Palafin squealed with indignation as the Rotom zapped them again and again. But it was one against a crowd, and Duke was swiftly cornered.[break][break]

"Shit, shit," Frank said. Then an idea struck him, a truly ingenius one. He grabbed the girl's wrist. "We gotta run! Duke, retreat!"

Frank shouted in alarm when the Orthworm broke through the glass ceiling and fell into the chamber, sand cascading in curtains all around them. He scooted around the sundial, hoping to put as much distance as possible between him and the aggressive Pokémon.[break][break]

Xiura was quick to command her Incineroar. Frank ducked just before her Pokémon's explosive attack filled the space.[break][break]

"Kathy! Give 'em a hand, will you?" he hollered.[break][break]

The Krookodile leaped onto the sundial's flat surface and swung her tail in a BRUTAL SWING. She struck both the Orthworm and the jutting, triangular blade, hard enough that the latter swung partway along an arcing groove.[break][break]

Suddenly, the elaborate runes along the sundial's surface glowed with brilliant light. Frank stared, shocked, as the very air in the chamber shimmered. Something invisible hooked him right behind his navel, and he felt a violent jerk from that location—hard enough to startle him, at least.[break][break]

He blinked, and suddenly, the Orthworm vanished. The glass ceiling was whole, not a single crack in sight.[break][break]

"What happened?" he blurted out, bewildered.[break][break]

Frank proceeded to tell Yuina all about his two children, Alice and Lucas: their personalities, their habits, their hobbies. Of course, the information was several years old, but he didn't reveal that to her. Instead, he spoke as if he still knew them well.[break][break]

As if he hadn't been the absent parent in their lives.[break][break]

After rambling for about thirty minutes, the conversation wound down. Frank found himself without anything more to say. He strolled in silence for another couple of minutes, then glanced at Yuina, a rueful smile on his face.[break][break]

"Sorry to talk your ear off. I appreciate you listening, though."[break][break]

They had wandered far from the start of the trail at that point, and he looked around, unfamiliar with their surroundings.[break][break]

"Whoa," Frank breathed as he and Xiura set foot in the strange room. Pausing in the entryway, he took a moment to admire the glass ceiling and the sundial in the center. "No idea."[break][break]

Trailed by his Pokémon, he finally walked toward the large device. He touched the sundial, expecting a reaction, but nothing happened. However, now that he was closer, he did notice beautiful filigree and embellishments along its edge and surface.[break][break]

Leaning closer, Frank peered at what he thought looked like writing. "Clockwise to go forward; counter-clockwise to go back'," he read aloud. "Huh. I wonder what it means."[break][break]

A long, large shadow suddenly darkened the chamber. Looking up, Frank shouted in alarm upon seeing the giant Orthworm peering down at them from the surface. And then, much to his consternation, it started to bang its snout against the glass.[break][break]

The ceiling seemed thick enough, but how strong was it really?

"It sucks, yeah, but there's nothing I can do about it. My ex is kind of a bitch," he said with a halfhearted laugh.[break][break]

But he didn't go into the details. Yuina did not need to know about the no contact order that Jackie had filed, or the reason for the filing. @albrecht had taken the news well, but Yuina had a more delicate personality.[break][break]

She might not like the thought of walking in the woods alone with a convict.[break][break]

Frank attempted another smile. "Do you mind if I talk about my kids a little, though? I haven't had someone to talk about them with in a long time, and, you know, I miss them a lot."

Frank totally understood and respected Yuina's desire to change the topic. He immediately grasped the first thing that came to mind and took out his phone.[break][break]

"My daughter's birthday is coming up soon," he said, flipping through his photo album. "Here's a picture of her from a few years ago."[break][break]

Beaming with fatherly pride and love, he showed Yuina the photograph. It depicted a young girl, about 8 years old, wearing a velvet dress of deep emerald and a small tiara in her hair. She smiled at the camera while holding a Cleffa in her lap.[break][break]

She was the spitting image of Frank.[break][break]

"Her name's Alice. I want to buy her something nice, but I don't think it will matter much." His smile faltered as he took back his phone. "Her mom won't let me see her, or her brother."

Unfortunately, Frank and his own Pokémon fell victim to the quicksand, too. "Not again!" he managed to yell before being sucked under.[break][break]

Thankfully, his landing in the tunnels was less painful; plenty of soft sand had piled up on the ground and cushioned his fall. Groaning, he rolled to his feet and wiped himself down.[break][break]

"I'm getting too old for this," he said, attempting some levity. Then he looked around for his companion. "Are you okay, Xiura?"[break][break]

Frank reached out a hand to help her up.
