Everyone looked tired these days.[break][break]
All the same, Eva's smile was a welcome sight. Relief flooded through Delilah as she heard the genuine pleasure in Eva's tone, though it was understandably mixed with surprise. Delilah was not accustomed to feeling particularly anxious, but her return to Hoenn had been more stressful than she'd anticipated. She blamed MATIAS SILPH for that.[break][break]
Delilah eagerly entered the small townhome, setting her purse down on the coffee table and taking a seat on the comfortable, if rather plain, couch where, unbeknownst to her, Eva had been napping mere minutes before her arrival. The living room was sparsely decorated, with less furniture expected. Delilah frowned slightly.[break][break]
"What's the deal with this place they've got you living in?" She asked Eva, distaste evident in her tone. "Your old place wasn't this plain."[break][break]
Her expression softened, however, as she gazed at her friend. Based on what Delilah knew from her various news outlets and social media connections, Eva was under a lot of pressure as of late. The League had already depended on her expertise; now, she was one of their coveted Avatars - something Delilah could not even begin to fathom. Where was Rayquaza anyway? Did the great dragon actually live inside of a pokeball like its non-legendary kin? Or did it roam free, a lord of the sky, when its presence wasn't needed?[break][break]
"Darling, you look awful," Delilah imparted matter-of-factly. Delilah had never been one to be coy with the truth. There was sincere affection, however, in the way she was looking at Eva.[break][break]
"I'm so sorry about the wedding."

Delilah rolled her eyes. As if to emphasize her unspoken point, she entered the room, took the seat opposite him, decisively crossed one slim leg over the other and then rested her purse in her lap.[break][break]
"Why keep liquor in your office if you aren't going to offer visitors a drink?" She huffed, folding her arms.[break][break]
She hated the way his keyboard sounded - click, click, click. She didn't believe for one second that he would actually have her deported: after all, MATIAS SILPH still wreaked his special brand of havoc over the region and Fernando had not sent him away.[break][break]
Theirs was a complicated relationship, of course. But her family had always been complicated; it was nothing new.[break][break]
"I would have come here one way or another," she added, almost as an afterthought. "There was a wedding I was supposed to attend."

Delilah narrowed her eyes, displeased to find she was on her last bite of cake.[break][break]
"Your feelings are valid, Matias," she sighed into her fork, savoring the final crumbs of the decadent dessert. "But the behavior you describe does not sound like the Eva Morales I am familiar with. Granted, I have been away for some time..." She glanced at Yui. The younger woman could perhaps fill in the gaps.[break][break]
Delilah wasn't a fool. Two people who had been madly in love - supposedly - did not suddenly try and kill one another with powerful legendary Pokémon out of the blue. Something triggered this, and he was dancing around it, the avoidance just another sign that the whole truth had not yet been revealed.[break][break]
"Is there someone else?" Delilah guessed, keeping her tone neutral. "Did one of you..." Cheat?[break][break]
She was familiar with such a narrative; after all, plenty of the movies she'd acted in had featured the ups and downs of romantic attachments. Someone cheated, there was a fight and a breakup, and eventually, a reconciliation. Often, the two people got back together, their relationship stronger than ever.[break][break]
Unless it was a tragedy, of course.

The office was as she remembered it, from years ago. Perhaps small touches had changed - a subtly not-so-subtle liquor cart, had that been there before? - but it was still his space. She waited by the door, not out of hesitance but because she was loath to take a seat if only for him to suggest they go elsewhere. Sometimes Fernando had an agenda, the likes of which she could not compete with, merely tack herself onto.[break][break]
She shifted her weight, sharp heels scraping against a cold, hard floor. She transferred her chic designer purse from one arm to the other. Amethyst eyes watched him with something that wasn't-quite-pity: softer, perhaps.[break][break]

His assessment was accurate, and she had no intentions of denying it. Of course she was busy. She had a makeup brand to run, promotions to participate in, and a family who somehow managed to elicit more drama than she ever could as a professional actress. She smiled innocuously at his comments, taking a sip of her cocktail. It was more tart than sweet, which was how she preferred her drinks.[break][break]
"What's keeping you busy, anyway? New programming for RotomTV?" She asked. "Personally, I'm insulted BARNABY FINCH hasn't contacted me yet for an interview. He ought to know that my return to Hoenn is big news." Her tone was playful. "Good for ratings."[break][break]
She liked the way Malcolm was looking at her, like she was good for plenty of things. It was one thing to know you were special; it was entirely another to be treated as such. She was no stranger to being fawned over, but this was different. More subtle, and more challenging. There was something razor-sharp about his keen gaze, even as he relaxed into his chair, enjoyed the food - like a patiently coiled Seviper who knew better than to strike too soon.

Delilah really had meant to visit Eva sooner.[break][break]
As she knocked on the door of the small townhome, the Pokémon League headquarters looming over her like some sort of stoic sentinel, Delilah wondered if Eva would even be happy to see her. They'd been friends - well, as much as two very busy, very prolific people could be friends - but Delilah had been away from Hoenn for several years . Eva's opinion of the Sliphs may have soured somewhat in the interim, given the current state of her engagement.[break][break]
Delilah would hardly be able to blame her, should it prove true.[break][break]
Well, that's why she was here. To hear Eva's side of the story. To listen attentively, console, perhaps even advise. Her brother wasn't exactly a neutral party in this whole affair; it was important to get all the details. On top of that, Delilah was genuinely curious about Eva's work. A Kanto visit, some sort of expedition into a rift the news was calling "The Ultra Deep Sea"...and of course, Rayquaza.[break][break]
Life has a way of getting out of hand. Some line from one of the movies she'd starred in recently.[break][break]
Delilah sighed, waited, hoped Eva was actually home.

"I can't believe it took us this long to get dinner," Delilah complained, pouting dramatically. "I've been here for a week, Malcolm! We were supposed to go out my first night in Hoenn, but someone was busy."[break][break]
She eyed the handsome man sitting across from her with mischievous eyes. Despite the overly dramatic chagrin that colored her tone of voice, she wasn't actually upset with him. It was in her nature to give the men she was fond of a hard time, that was all.[break][break]
Ambrosia was a chic, modern spot with a 200 PD tasting menu that was apparently to die for. Alolan-fusion, they called it. "An upscale, Hoenn-inspired twist on traditional Alolan cuisine." Her assistant had said it was the posh place to go these days, all the rage amongst Hoenn's biggest celebrities. The quality of the food wasn't at the top of Delilah's list of concerns when it came to dinner dates, however; if her conversation partner was painstakingly banal, the entire thing would drag. Despite being a talented actress, she often found it difficult to keep up appearances when she was bored out of her mind.[break][break]
Luckily for her, the food at Ambrosia was good and her date wasn't boring.[break][break]

In retrospect, perhaps it hadn't been the best idea to hold a photoshoot atop Mt. Chimney, but Delilah's agent had claimed it would be "just spectacular!" to get some photos of Delilah wearing her new eyeshadow line somewhere "edgy"...well, clearly the woman had taken her concept a little too literally. Jagged rocks jutted out of the ground all around Delilah as she attempted to pose. It wasn't exactly comfortable.[break][break]
Someone screamed, and Delilah immediately got to her feet. One of the camera crew was hurrying away from...was one of the backdrops on fire? Delilah quickly released Astarte, concerned that something was about to attack them.[break][break]
Two Emboar rolled into sight, viciously locked in battle. Delilah hopped back, yelping in surprise. "Do something about this!" She snapped at her Ariados, feeling even more justified in her original pushback regarding the precarious photoshoot location.[break][break]
Astarte sent a TOXIC THREAD at both Emboar, hoping to ensnare the pair before they lit up all of Delilah's team's supplies. Restrained, they bellowed angrily. Delilah threw a Pokeball in hopes of catching at least one of them. It would be the easiest way to clear the area, she figured.[break][break]

Yes, she almost replied. But this was a diplomatic visit; she had no intentions of further riling her brother. So instead, she graciously accepted her slice of cake and held her tongue.[break][break]
The cake was good.[break][break]
"Yui, did you make this?" Delilah asked, incredulous. It wasn't that she thought her younger sister wholly incapable of producing such a cake, but, well, Yui was known for coding not cooking.[break][break]
As she chewed another bite of the decadent chocolate dessert, she couldn't help but wonder about the timing of this...training accident. There was something suspicious about all of it - the called-off wedding, the house arrest, the clash between two legendary Pokémon...[break][break]
"Matias, are you...allright?" It was strange to feel concerned for a man who acted as if he were untouchable, but even mountains crumbled under enough pressure. Matias did have a heart, somewhere deep down...beneath the burning ambition and violent passion. He had just broken up with his long-time fiancée, the supposed love of his life. From the sounds of it, the parting had been messy.[break][break]
I ought to check on Eva too, after this.

"What? And leave before cake?" Delilah scoffed, following Yui into the kitchen. She slid onto a barstool at the counter, Astarte climbing up onto her lap. Delilah set her purse beside her on a second stool, then folded her hands under her chin and watched Yui work. Matias was a looming presence, but she tried to ignore the weight of his gaze. He'd always been prickly with her, which was, of course, ridiculous - couldn't he see that she had his best interests in mind, as she did with all of their family?[break][break]
"The media will always spin things to an overly dramatic degree," Delilah commented lightly. She would know, she spent the majority of her time with that crowd.[break][break]
The cake really did look good. A few bites wouldn't hurt, even if she was supposed to be following her nutritionist's strict guidelines based on her upcoming photoshoot schedule.[break][break] "Which is why I want to hear your side of the story. Why the house arrest?"

Astarte was a picky Pokémon, prone to a temperamental disposition. It wasn't exactly her fault: she'd been pampered all her life. All the same, she was a particularly difficult aracnid to appease, which the owners of the hat store had not necessarily been prepared for when they'd jumped at the opportunity to feature Delilah Silph's Pokémon in their new TERA CROWNS: Terastallize your fashion marketing campaign.[break][break]
"This is the last one," The manager of the store said nervously, bringing out a simple, if elegant, amethyst-encrusted crown. He placed it delicately onto the Ariados's head. She tilted her head side-to-side, staring at herself in the mirror. Several long moments passed; everyone in the shop held their breath.[break][break]
