Rusted Shield

Chaos erupted around Alba, as heroes and villains butted heads in pursuit of their own agendas. He was part of that chaos too, of course, it was just that he was a little distracted with a side project before the main event. His prize, the little black shards, fell neatly into his hand before being stowed away in a safe place. Something to take a closer look at later on.[break][break]

Mercifully, the scientist was close enough to Felix Gallagher to be able to take shelter under his Wide Guard, though as it turned out the avalanche was only the beginning of their trouble. Some weird move was used on the canine's shield, and with a vile sense of vertigo…[break][break]

According to some random people's yelling, they were in Galar, or at least a very good simulation of the Crown Tundra. But was the region meant to feel like an hours-old corpse? Had it fallen into this much disrepair, or was this the result of unfathomable hatred blending together with local legend?[break][break]

The world still spun. Musharna used Calm Mind to focus herself against whatever new dangers this unknown snowscape had in store for them.[break][break]

Someone (Zev Harcourt ) perked up on comms asking for the black fragments; as if Alba would just hand them over so willingly. If he wanted them that badly, he could wait his turn. Or maybe some other, more generous soul would keep him happy?[break][break]

It was still chaos, of course, but mostly the chaos of people licking their wounds, and threatening each other with their swords. It wasn't until MATIAS SILPH attacked that fists really started to fly—[break][break]

Oh, it's him, huh. Saying he was filled with hate when he saw the freak bastard who nearly killed him wasn't quite right. It was more like he was feeling someone else's hate that had pointed itself towards the easiest target, leaving him disconnected from that violent emotion.[break][break]

If Musharna wasn't busy, he'd have probably taken a shot at killing him as well. Instead, he'd have to settle for watching him get vaporised on the sidelines.

Earplugs in, and away they flew. Queen Zing would find her rider to be an agreeable sort, letting her fly as she wished. He was a much quieter passenger than Shalin, though, too wrapped up in feeling the wind rush past him, in watching the world move below him, to remember to scream out loud or anything like that.[break][break]

Actually, he was a little interested in what those beating wings would sound like as well… Though for the sake of health and safety (or at least to avoid causing trouble for his guide), he'd keep his earplugs in. Besides, as they threaded their way through bursts of steam towards their destination, it quickly became clear there were far more interesting things to point his curiosity towards.[break][break]

"Hah… I get what you mean, now." Defiance of reality, huh? The castle that stood before him wasn't anything built according to the reality of common sense, that much was clear. It felt more like something that had been placed down by some divine hand than something built by human effort.[break][break]

No, she'd said some interesting things even before that. A place where Ultra Beast eggs could be hatched, which was to say, somewhere new specimens could be freely obtained. And talk of sealed, immensely destructive forces… The purpose of every box was to be opened, but saying that out loud seemed like a bad idea.[break][break]

"I'm guessing the most exciting stuff is at the top of the palace?" He asked, pointing towards the concealing veil. Everything interesting was always waiting at the end of the journey: on top floors; in deep basements; sealed away at the centre of it all. The unnatural light only felt like a bigger neon sign declaring a secret to be buried within.

One little question had caused up quite a stir, huh. Hitoshi Inoue and Ashley Shepard had sparked up quite the interesting debate; naturally, he had to barge in with his own correct judgment. It was the nice thing to do![break][break]

"Your logic isn't half-bad, but I agree with the other guy," Alba chimed in, looking at Ashley. "What happens if the box opening means it's already too late? Not giving enough attention to the unknown is just asking for us to be caught flat-footed when something new, and something dangerous appears." It wasn't that he didn't believe in what he was saying, but there were ulterior motives hidden under a different light. He was, after all, part of Team Rocket's scientific team. In other words…[break][break]

'I'd love to put that weird fish under the microscope.'[break][break]

"You mentioned being able to end things quickly, but that ability is exactly why unknown threats should be a greater priority. If we know how to shoot Moltres out of the sky with a single, decisive shot…" Ready, aim… He paused in his speech to level a finger at Moltres' image, facing a god down the barrel of a gun. "...Then we only need to line things up when it's time to fire."[break][break]

Bang. Though the sound of the bullet only existed in Alba's mind.[break][break]

"Better to focus on finding the magic bullet to other threats, no?" And with that, he walked over and made his choice: C: THE THREATS UNKNOWN.[break][break]

"Oh, and good speech, by the way! It really filled me with team spirit." The bit about them being outclassed by the League in every way was a little less inspiring, but sometimes the truth hurt.

It's the nature of villains to war against knights. Chivalric tales of tyrants and dragons in their foreboding towers, and the heroes in their steel armour laying siege to the evil that lay within.[break][break]

Well, we're not in a tower right now. We're just in an overrun tunnel, Aggron filling the space like links of chainmail. Really, it's more like we're laying siege to the heroes... but they're causing a nuisance, so maybe this situation is a little more nuanced than a fairy tale. Maybe it's more like that book about the would-be knight fending off windmills? Or maybe it's just a case of some wild Pokémon following their instinct.[break][break]

We're definitely not a hero, but there's no rule saying a villain can't do some public good, right? Even if there's a selfish motivation of catching a powerful new friend mixed in, even the worst person in the world has the potential to give charity.

Rusted Shield

Subdue four powerful Pokémon: two legendary dogs from the region of Galar, and two… beasts… that were what, rumoured to bring ruination to the world? That task seemed arduous enough, even before considering the League deciding to meddle in affairs. At least this was a large-scale operation… and with that in mind, Alba could only really influence half the war anyway.[break][break]

It was more like subduing two powerful Pokémon, then; much more manageable, especially when they were so intent on killing each other. Let them play off each other, whittling themselves down, keep the League from giving too much of a helping hand to their favoured beast… Balance the scales just right, and cleaning up the dregs at the end would be a breeze.[break][break]

The fight between titans was fascinating in its own right. A broken blade chipped away at a steadfast shield, flakes of metal falling to the ground as… well, as something. And as a helpful voice chirped in his ear, Alba's curiosity was piqued.[break][break]

"Grabbing some of those fragments, huh? Well, I'll do my best~" The Avalanche roared in his ears as it approached, but half a dozen people already stood against its tide. Another half a dozen embroiled themselves in attacking the cat and dog; why not let them handle things and indulge in his own wants for a while? Sending out his Musharna, at his command she attempted to use Psychic on some of the disparate shards of once-metal, trying to fetch them for her trainer.

…But nothing happems. The words seem to echo in the nothingness, as Alba's Pokémon stands there, inscrutable as always. Well, disobedience wasn't unusual in situations like this, with new and unfamiliar Pokémon. And considering how new and unfamiliar this was to the world at large…[break][break]

"Mm, I see." And on Alba moves, leaving the Lucario be. Iron Moth follows obediently, in stark contrast to its silent refusal just a moment prior.[break][break]

'A pacifist…?' That wouldn't do at all. The primary use for Pokémon was battling… He'd have to repurpose his friend one way or another, in that case, and if that new calling in life turns out to be to be sprawled across an examination table… Well, that was just how things went sometimes.

"I think the view you'd get if you peeked inside a clown car… that's the kind of thing the people on the other side of that camera are enjoying right now." A mass of agitated bodies all gathered in a single room, inflated personalities filling up all the space and causing a racket… They weren't quite a circus, but given the kinds of things people were yelling out, it had to be a pretty good show.[break][break]

He would have joined in with the monologuing, but all of his colourful death threats were being saved for another time. And saying things like 'I'm so fucked' or 'We're so fucked' just seemed like a terrible idea. Still, the evaluation had started now; he needed something to make an impression.[break][break]

"I think we're gonna do death matches," Alba chimed in, picking up a thought nobody else had bothered with. "It's called the 'Trinity Trials', right? Trinity, as in three. But there are what, twenty-one, twenty-two of us? If you follow the pattern, it's obvious not all of us will be making it." It cleanly and neatly explained why he felt more like a chess piece than a person. Well, a pawn got to be promoted when it reached the end of the board. All it had to do was survive until that time.[break][break]

"You've… never actually danced before, have you?" He wouldn't have said something as clueless as that if he had. Dancing and battles… A conclusion like the one Kouji had so brazenly made could only have been made due to a lack of data. Or at least, that was Alba's opinion.[break][break]

"Not that much…?" At that point, daylight streamed from behind Alba's head. It should have turned him into a saint, but somehow that halo just made him look more devil-like. "What if I took out the braid?" He asked as if something as superficial as that could turn him into an ordinary member of society.[break][break]

Still, off he went, dredging up as much innocence as he could muster. He just had to be a pair of eyes, and his days spent in front of telescopes and microscopes alike had honed his ability to monitor things. Probably best to keep that guard a little raised just in case, though.

"You know, I heard there are people who turn all this ash into all sorts of things. I wonder if it'll end up ruining my lungs, though…" It was always a little nostalgic, wandering into the tall grass and waiting for some Pokémon or another to rear its head. Here in particular, walking through it kicked up ash spewed out from the nearby volcano.[break][break]

"I suppose you don't have to worry, though, do you? Your Fire typing probably protects you… If you even have lungs, that is." Iron Moth was a strange Pokémon. It looked unmistakably like the Volcarona from his home region, though its relation to them — like everything else about it — was a mystery. A Paradox, if you liked.[break][break]

This outing wasn't any scientific endeavour, though. Alba mostly just wanted to take a walk with his newest pet, even if it was a new and unknown frontier in science, a creature that only seemed to come from a half-real place. No, not 'even if'; 'especially because'.

"Oh, don't make that face, Kaname. I'm sure we can think of a way to make things more interesting." A smile graced Alba's face to contrast his colleague's falling one. There was plenty they could do while the centrifuge spun.[break][break]

"Hmm…" Still, he wanted a hypothesis about their mystery as well.[break][break]

"The key to this is that it's only heard at night. Even though it's louder when people are awake, surely someone would have reported the noise if it was happening in the day as well. In other words… Whether it's mechanical or Pokémon, it's something that only operates at night. A Pokémon making noise at night, that's simple enough, but most of the machines in the labs should be off at this time. Unless…" He trailed off into silent thought, a finger pressed to the corner of his lips as he seemed to consider something.[break][break]

"...No, I don't think many others would be willing to work this late." It was meant to be a veiled compliment, but the way he'd said it meant the veil was a little too thick. "So, unless you can think of a machine that fits the bill, I think it's more likely to be something living."

Crime Time

After the hellish 24 hours of the Ultra Deep Sea, the mundanity of trafficking Pokémon made Alba want to laugh. That was right… despite everything he'd been through, he was nothing more than a petty thief working for an organised crime group. No terrorism or scientific research could shake that fact.[break][break]

"Hm… Never smuggled anything before, but I've been in plenty of places I shouldn't have been." He sounds almost nostalgic as he speaks, though his eyes snap from the past to the present soon enough.[break][break]

"It's a dance!" Alba declares with a snap of his fingers. "Well, it's more like the opposite of that, since we're moving against them rather than with them. A masquerade ball where if you're seen, you lose, simple as that."[break][break]

"You know this place better than me, right? If you know the steps, then take to the floor."

The 'wildest Pokémon rider', huh… That was a claim and a half to make. It wasn't as if Alba knew any other Pokémon riders, though, so it might as well have been true.[break][break]
