Blood in the Water

"Oh, you're going to gut me… My mistake." The very real and serious threat against his life doesn't seem to be taken very real and seriously, or maybe Alba's just not very worried about things like potential danger. It does seem to do the job though, as he gets back into the swing of things, the strain of exertion moving back into his voice as he starts actually pushing the damn thing again.[break][break]

She was interesting, this Rocket girl he'd never met before. Maybe something about the criminal terrorist organisation drew in the crazy people— okay, it absolutely did that, but of the few co-workers he'd properly talked to, not many of them were the "burn all the world and see what grows from its ashes"-type.[break][break]

"I wonder… what kind of future you'll manage to bring." Even a wasteland would be worthy of study.

The Rocket gasps at the sound of the click, then slowly turns back round to face John. Staring down the barrel of the gun, the masked man starts to laugh, still perfectly balanced on that border.[break][break]

"Oh-ho, really? Are you gonna shoot me?"[break][break]

'Fuck, fuck, fuck, he's absolutely about to shoot me.' A single bullet to his rapidly-beating heart would do it. The silence around them is louder than any death knell. Nobody would be close enough to save him as the lack of oxygen kills his brain.[break][break]

The vivid mental image of his own death is surprisingly comforting, cutting down the number of unknowns to a single "what happens next?' It's the prospect of arrest that keeps him anxious, more than anything. He likes the freedom, the anonymity, the perfect duality of his life right now. Some half-dead man wasn't going to take that from him.[break][break]

"I'm really not interested in getting shot, or getting arrested, so trust me when I say you're wasting your time with me. I'm just a glorified office worker, carrying some interesting words from one place to the other. Besides… not even giving me a chance to fight back? That's kinda lame."

Approaching Challenger

Claws rake into a cottony body, and Whimsicott cries out in pain. She looks… unhappy about being attacked like that, though more obvious is the fact that it wasn't just light damage she took.[break][break]

"Moonblast." Neither of them hesitate despite that; the Windveiled Pokémon fires off a ball of moonlight, trying to take advantage of Meowscarada being in close-range.[break][break]

If they got out of this okay, he'd treat her to a Casteliacone, or at least whatever knockoff this region could provide.

The shaking was really starting to make those possibly-loaded rifle barrels dig into his stomach, and the look in her eye suggested she might actually just shoot him if he took too long a break, so that seems like his cue to get back to work! Standing up and putting way too much weight on a couple of buried landmines, Alba hops out of the cart, wiping some sweat from under his mask before (sort of) helping Xenon push.[break][break]

"Oh, interesting! It's good to have strong ideals like that. Always gives you something to work towards." He nodded a couple of times, as if he was agreeing with himself, and then: "I joined because I want money. The murderous alien lifeforms are a personal interest of mine, and the terrorism is… for fun, I guess? There are worse jobs out there. Like working in a Poké Mart."[break][break]

"So, shaking up society, huh. You got an idea of how you want the pieces to fall? Or is this more of a 'twisting the kaleidoscope and seeing what you get' sort of thing?"

Huh, well, he'd never seen that happen before. The corpse of some poor man came plummeting to the ground without any warning, right in front of his eyes— oh, he was still alive? The document was stashed away into one of his pockets as Alba watched the stranger peel himself off the floor.[break][break]

"Well spotted! Not a lot of people manage to catch the big red R on my chest." The tone he spoke in managed to sit right on the border of sincerity and sarcasm.[break][break]

"Well then, enjoy the rest of your day! Or night, or whatever time it is." And with that, Alba started to wander off again. Strange men appearing from thin air were interesting, but he really couldn't be bothered to deal with some League trainer trying to interfere with his work.

Blood in the Water

It's like hitting a leaf that had been out in the rain. A leaf that let out a choked noise at the sound of someone manifesting right behind him and shoving him face-first into a pile of incredibly lethal items. Actually, though, it wasn't that uncomfortable once he'd twisted around to look at his attacker/saviour in the eye.[break][break]

Well, at least it was someone on his side. The only things Alba would be able to grab in time were grenades, and he wasn't super interested in decorating his body with shrapnel scars.[break][break]

"Sorry." Nice and quick, just like she'd asked. It was true, he was very weak, and very wimpy. So very wimpy, that maybe he'd be able to get away with fully relaxing into the pile of death and coasting along for the rest of this journey…[break][break]

Hm. Was that faint beeping coming from the bottom of the cart, or was he just starting to hallucinate about the comforts of the laboratories…?

Alba Evovae was on a leisurely stroll. Not many people took leisurely strolls in a place like this, but what was wrong with taking things easy for an hour or two? He'd put in plenty of effort into criminal activities; he didn't just deserve this break, he needed it.[break][break]

Now, what activities did people tend to do while on leisurely strolls? Stop and admire the scenery? Certainly! There were an abundance of interesting rock formations and bioluminescence to look at. Do some light reading with some fine literature? Certainly! This classified document offering a scientific study of some of the Ultra Deep Sea's oddities was more than enough to hold his attention. Was he allowed to look at the document? He didn't actually know! But as long as nobody found out, and he kept it safe, he'd be perfectly fine.

Where in his job description had "pushing a cart full of explosives and other assorted weaponry across an ocean beyond the stars" been written? Well, nowhere, seeing as criminal organisations didn't tend to advertise themselves on job listings. But still! Between fighting runaways, fighting idols, fighting some other guy, and frankly an uncomfortable amount of running around, this was quickly becoming Alba's least favourite part of this hellish day. The stupid thing was heavy, and he was already drenched with sweat, and Porygon's lack of arms limited its cart-pushing ability, and the three other grunts accompanying him had already run off in pursuit of some League trainers…[break][break]

No, no, this was fine. It was better for him to be alone with his thoughts, actually. Alone with himself, and that creeping, cold feeling that something or someone was slowly gaining on him…

Whimsicott's been through enough these past [how many hours has it been? It's so hard to track the time in a place like this], so he'll just have to rely on his second instead. Musharna emerges from her Poké Ball, straight into the paralysing cloud. Synchronize would help even out the playing field some.[break][break]

No attack is forthcoming, but Musharna's eyes blink open, Future Sight focusing her vision somewhere neither of them could see.

"A spotlight, even in a place like this…" Ohhh, he wanted one of those so badly. Dramatic lighting wherever he went? A clear and easy sign he was someone to pay attention to? Right, this battle absolutely had to go ahead, then. Alba was just a typical grunt as it stood, but a grunt that had stood his ground against a member of the Elite Four? That was someone worthy of a little more drama.[break][break]

"Whimsicott?" A flick of his wrist, and his partner emerges from her Poké Ball. "Let's blow them away." The air began to churn, and a Hurricane descended on his opponent.

Approaching Challenger

"Oh, it's you! I'd recognise that face anywhere." A roughed up, dusty Rocket Grunt appears, though his mask is perfectly untouched, as if he had been protecting it with his life. Was it in stark contrast to an eternally untouched idol girl, or had a single day war worn down on the both of them? Either way, there was a gulf between them in status, and power. Someone stood at the elite of all Hoenn, every spotlight trained on her every move. Someone else could be killed and replaced at any given opportunity.[break][break]

"Hey, if I manage to beat you, does that count as an official League win?" When two Trainers' eyes meet, they have to battle. Even if his were hidden behind that mask of his, the principle remained. Two people in direct opposition couldn't ever just walk away from each other.

Gatekeeping

"Psycho?! I'm not even trying to patronise you, you dumb— ugh!" As Alba starts to snap back at Sergei, the scatter bang goes off, turning his and Whimsicott's visions into spots dancing on white. It's only natural that the earthen attack strikes true after that. Shards of rock pummel the both of them, and the carefree air around the grunt begins to slip.[break][break]

"Moonblast." His vision is still hazy, the enemy not much more than a blur of colour. If he had to guess, his partner was suffering the same way. Still, what would happen if they held back now? More rocks and boulders, to bleed them dry.

Silver Road

As the first signs of the seaside began to roll in, the passenger's grip on the rider tightened, just enough to be noticeable. Even still, he seemed to lean further away from Jett, tilting his head up to see the clouds in their entirety.[break][break]

There was something different about this stranger, now, ringing clear as a bell as he spoke. It was like the sound of his words had taken on a different hue, slowly stretching across the spectrum of light. From staring out at the storm slowly brewing around them, Alba's eyes snapped towards the blond head of hair in front of him, trying to cut into what exactly had shifted.[break][break]

Then the world's eyes turn to face him.[break][break]

"I think…"[break][break]

The sea air brushed against his skin. The salt burrowed through his pores, finding their way to his wounds.[break][break]

"That storms really suck. Wind that messes up your hair, rain that gets your hair wet, lightning that makes your hair stand up… There's just nothing good that comes out of them." The colour that reflected and scattered more than any other; that was what he danced in and out of as he spoke.[break][break]

'...There's heaven behind it, though. There has to be.' And with that thought, the cycling road began to slope just a fraction downwards.
