"Please, Whimsicott?" Alba calls out as the tomb of sand flies towards him. It's a vague request, but the Pokémon seems to catch onto what her trainer means, hopping in front to take the full force of the attack. Sand in the eyes and everything.[break][break]

'Better her than me', that's the long and short of it. He can't afford to let this guy just blind him then slip past.[break][break]

His opponent says something interesting, though. "An emergency? Well, why didn't you say so earlier? What's the problem, stranger?" The Grunt sounds genuinely interested in Sergei's woes, talking with the tone you'd use in casual conversation, even as he hurls a poison barb towards the Garchomp. They're still in a battle, after all.

Gatekeeping

There's a lot less urgency in Alba's mind, though with the position he's taken for himself, it's kind of like he's taking it easy. Compared with running around, getting attacked by League agents, and getting lost in the Interdream Zone, hanging around and picking off the stragglers trying to break free is like a breeze. …Well, except for when it's not.[break][break]

Speaking of stragglers, a particularly desperate one was heading his way. At least, you had to be desperate if you were trying to bargain with the enemy, right?[break][break]

"Don't you know the rules? When two Trainers' eyes meet, it's time for them to battle." Though the idea of meeting eyes lost a bit of its weight when one pair was hidden behind a mask. "Besides, just letting the enemy through without any hassle… I'm pretty sure my bosses won't be too happy with me if they hear about that."[break][break]

A Poké Ball sails through the air, and a Whimsicott gently drifts down to the ground. "I don't have a clue who you are either, so at least it's not personal, mm?" It was just the way of the world. Sometimes people got in each other's way, just because they had to.

"I'm never lost. Wherever I end up is where I wanted to go." The smile on that face became almost dangerous, the closest he'd get to speaking of the past on the road that only ever looked forward. There would always be people charting out paths on a map, but this microcosm of a dream was too small for them to notice.[break][break]

"You're not so bad yourself."[break][break]

The Alba who was standing there was an Alba who had been moulded by this road between the stars. Seaweed grew out from his chest in mimicry of a leather jacket, and he leaned against the air as if it was a wall. If he had a smoke, he'd be blowing rings.[break][break]

Well, at his core he was still a scientist, but he'd come to the conclusion that the best form of research here was to go with the flow. So, maybe it was for just a single day, or maybe some spark would keep clinging to him like a barnacle, but for today he was one hundred percent genuinely like this.[break][break]

"Hmm… if I had to guess, probably f— oh, wow." There's a playful tone to Alba's response as he turns around, until he lays eyes on this man, injured enough to be unable to walk normally.[break][break]

He's masked, of course, though even if he's hiding his face the big red R on his uniform should immediately tell Matias what side the stranger works for. A hint of white hair peeks out from underneath his villainous cap.[break][break]

"I really hate to kick a man who needs medical attention." The slight drawl in his words suggests that's not entirely true. "But somehow I doubt you're just going to leave me in peace."

"Dangeous area", "potential hazards ahead", "high risk of grievous bodily harm"... these were all just words meant to separate the chaff from the wheat. To the truly dedicated, it didn't matter how loud and colourful a warning sign was, it wouldn't deter them from roaming the ends of the earth to see what they might find.[break][break]

Alba Evovae did not want to suffer grievous bodily harm. He very much wanted to keep his bodily harm to a minimum, as it happened. If he absolutely had to lose a finger or a kidney or two, so be it, but ideally he emerged from the palace erected in defiance of reality with all his organs intact.[break][break]

Fortunately, he'd managed to find an expert on reality-defying palaces! Or rather, it was more that he'd learned of its existence from a ranger advertising her services — and really, how could he turn down an opportunity like this?[break][break]

The client who arrived didn't seem all that scared of the rides, eyes shining with an interest in the bug-types that had grown large enough to be mounts. He looked like he'd only just stepped out of a laboratory, dressed in a white coat with white hair tied into a braid.[break][break]

"Shalin Nariya, right?!" Alba yelled out, trying to make his voice reach her from down on the ground.

Thoughts of the freedom of Palkia and Dialga did not float around in Alba's mind... mostly because he was unaware of any kind of capture or release alike. He was a newcomer to the region after all, a Grunt who had made it to the first rung on the great ladder of criminal power. Fortunately, the simple joy of being able to experience something so completely abnormal (or at least abnormal to him) first-hand was enough to satisfy him. It was more than worth the potential of a violent end at the hands of vicious and hyperaggressive Pokémon, or the unforeseen side effects of stepping into a place with broken space-time![break][break]

A sudden glitch in physical space sent the scientist falling to the ground; coordinate corruptions threw off his balance. And there, lying in front of him as if it was waiting to be picked up...[break][break]

Just kidding. Now he was actually thinking about it, maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Kaname Fujihara was a valued colleague. His contribution to their scientific work had proven as much; out of all the employees that were on this fancy boat, there were worse people to spend the night with, wandering deserted and potentially haunted rooms.[break][break]

"Oh? Well, seeing as we're here, I wouldn't mind a little overtime." Any pretence of exhaustion evaporated from Alba's face, momentarily forgotten. Of course he'd exaggerated how tired he actually was a little; it wasn't as though he'd never been a night owl before. Not that night and day existed very much when under the sea… Still, this wouldn't be all too different to his typical extra hours. Not too different, provided you ignored the mysterious noises and the fact that it would just be the two of them.[break][break]

"Tell me, Kaname, what do you think we'll find?" From humans, to Pokémon, to critical risk mechanical faults, there were all sorts of things that could go bump in the night.

Mysterious circumstances were naturally meant to be investigated. Really, it would be a lie for Alba to say he had no interest in investigating at all. Weird noises coming from a submarine? A vessel that was meant to run like clockwork, day-in day-out, lest they all die horribly under the sea? Fun! It was the kind of thing that was worth a few dark shadows under his eyes the following day.[break][break]

"Yawn..."[break][break]

Just kidding. It really wasn't interesting enough to make him want to pull an all-nighter. There wasn't anything he could (or would) do about it, and it was a good way to look like a reliable little Grunt, and there were definitely worse jobs they could be making him do right now... but he still had the right to complain in private! That, and the right to throw in a yawn or a stretch every so often, just for good measure.[break][break]

At least there was only so much room on the submarine, and the noises were only really heard around the laboratories. There was a little cause for concern that his workplace was making weird nighttime noises, but whatever! It hadn't killed any scientists (but specifically Alba) yet, so as long as he and Kaname took care of everything there was no need to worry.
