When he learned that one of his colleagues had been taken captive by a Team Rocket squadron deep in the Giant Chasm, he quickly volunteered. There was no way he would allow Team Rocket to harm someone who was trying to do good in the world. He was certain that something terrible would happen if the guy was left alone with Team Rocket for too long.

As he learned more about the mission, he was surprised to find out that he wouldn't be working with another officer, but with a ranger instead. Not that it really mattered. As long as a civilian's life wasn't in danger, he was fine with whoever he worked with on the mission.

The sound of footsteps interrupted his thoughts, and he looked up to see a man approaching him. He had heard that the person he would be working with was a dark haired man, so he assumed that he was the one. "Hello," he said, giving him a polite nod.

"My name is Mikael, but you can call me Mika. As you may have heard, we have been assigned the task of rescuing a fellow league member from the clutches of Team Rocket," he said, pausing to make sure he had been informed about what was expected of them.[break] Audric Black

Ignoring his instincts to draw one of his own knives, he put up his hands to show that he had no weapons and meant no harm. "Easy there, I didn't mean to startle you. I can assure you that I mean no harm," he said, his tone mild but nonetheless friendly.

When the other person relaxed his guard, he did as well, but he did notice that the older male didn't put away his knife. Paranoid, perhaps? He filed that information away for later as his hands returned to his sides.

At the insult thrown at the person in need of rescue, his brow rose. That was quite the insult to throw towards someone you didn't know. In fact, having never been around much foul language, he actually wasn't sure what to say to that, so he simply shook his head.

However, the next comment was definitely something he could comment on. "No one deserves to die. Locked away, never to see the sun again, sure. And I'm not talking about some jail cell either; lock them away in a dungeon and throw away the key. Death is too quick and makes the lives of those people they touched miserable," he said, his tone mild, though there was a deep sadness in his eyes. It was clear that he knew what he was talking about when he mentioned the last part.

His own brothers were cut down before his eyes. And for what? Him, his brothers, and the friends he had lost that night hadn't ever bothered anybody. But it was that pain that made him think of the families the bad guys might have. Some of them might actually be good people.

Mentally shaking himself, he focused back on Tavish and his Pokémon just in time to see the Pokémon signing something to the older male. The sight caused his eyebrow to raise. A Pokémon that could sign? Well, that was new.

"My name is Mikael, but Mika works just as well," he said upon hearing the older male introduce himself. He also inclined his head as a sign of respect before continuing. "Hmm, he's not really a bad person. Careless or inattentive would be a better way to describe him," he said as he looked over the description he had been given by the person who had called in the rescue.

He continued looking through his notes before answering the rest of Tavish's questions. "He's some kind of researcher, apparently. Probably an assistant, considering his age. But there are no reports of him hurting Pokémon, unless you count him accidentally running into them due to not paying enough attention," he said with a small shrug.

Feeling Aurora brush his mind with her psychic abilities, he glanced down at her. "What is it?" he asked. The psychic type simply pointed with her nose down below. Frowning, he followed her line of sight to the tree and had to resist the urge to sigh.

"Let's go. I see him. He's in that tree," he said, a note of exasperation in his tone as he began to move closer towards the gathered Pokémon while maintaining the high ground. If Tavish were to look towards the tree, he would see what had gotten Mikael so exasperated. The person was somewhat in the tree, if you could count only hanging on by a shirt sleeve that they had somehow gotten tangled around a tree branch, as being in the tree.[break] tavish rose

He had become bad at assuming things. Thankfully, the guy didn't seem offended even as he told him he could defend himself. "Sorry, I can get a little carried away with the whole protective thing. Old habits," he said with a small shrug.

To some extent, he reminded him of his younger brother. The one a few years younger than himself. Always acting tough, claiming he could take care of himself. That's where the similarities ended though. Unlike Dr. Maher, his brother would've pouted if Mikael had even implied that he couldn't take care of himself.

"Well, if you're sure you won't mind, I'll take you up on that offer," he said warmly as he took out a piece of paper. It showed signs of already having been started.

Showing him the map, he indicated where the entrance was before tracing a line with his finger to show where they were at. "It's not great, but it shows the basics. I'm better at reading maps than drawing them."

The map itself actually wasn't bad. However, Mikael, being a perfectionist when it came to stuff like this, would never admit he had done a good job.

He didn't like people getting hurt. He didn't like Pokémon getting hurt. In a perfect world, no one would get hurt. But this wasn't a perfect world. And sometimes he just had to choose whether or not to hurt someone or a Pokémon.

When he had received word that a civilian had been cornered by some Pokémon, he had been hesitant to intervene, especially when he had discovered they were Brute Bonnet. However, his inability to ignore someone in need of help had won out, and before he knew it, he was making his way towards the location.

Before he reached his destination, the sound of talking reached him, causing him to furrow his brows as it sounded like a one-sided conversation. Worried about the possibility of someone else being in trouble, he quickened his pace, only to be met by a man and his Obstagoon.

The man didn't seem hurt, and Selene, his Umbreon, and Aurora, his Espeon, weren't reacting, so he figured he didn't pose a threat. They would have acted negatively if he did.

His companion was a competent battler. He didn't have to worry about both of their battles. Even so, he kept an eye on how the other was holding up with the battles. After all, in this kind of situation, anything could happen, so he just wanted to be prepared.

"Thank you, you're quite adept at battling as well," he said without taking his eyes off of the advancing Pokémon. Doing so could lead to some pretty dire consequences.

Trusting his companions to be able to decide for themselves what to do, he didn't issue any more orders. Instead, he chose to scan their opponents, making note of how many Pokémon were there.

While their trainer did that, Aurora readied a Future Sight while Selene ran forwards using Snarl, hitting many of the opposing Pokémon with the move.[break] Roy Aker

While he might not always be the most forthcoming, as a rule, he didn't lie. So upon hearing the other's question, he immediately shook his head before responding. "I see how you would think that, but no, not from Kalos either," he commented, adding the Kalos part before any question could be asked.

He didn't like talking about his home region. It brought up too many bad memories. Forever soured due to what had gone down. It also brought forth a lot of emotions that he just didn't want to deal with or didn't like dealing with.

"If I was by myself, I wouldn't mind tracking it down to see what it is, but as a rule, I won't put another person's life in danger," he commented as he stood up from his crouched position. In other words, he didn't care if he put his own life in danger, but he wouldn't put someone else's life in danger.

He refused to be the cause of someone getting hurt.

Fear flooded him at the thought of once again failing to protect someone. Images flashed through his mind of his brothers and his friends, them getting cut down before his eyes. He hadn't been enough to protect them.

The other's voice broke through his dark thoughts, and he turned, giving the other male a small smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Maher."

"Yeah, there are a lot of powerful Pokémon down here. Not your run-of-the-mill Pokémon," he said, busy scanning their surroundings for potential dangers, unaware that the innocence was faked. However, upon hearing the question, he turned his attention to the other male.

He thought about the best way to answer. He didn't really want to admit he was an officer. Don't get him wrong, he loved his job, but he wasn't in the mood to get into a discussion about his career. It involved one thing he didn't care for: talking about himself.

If not that, he supposed he could tell a bit of the truth. With that in mind, he spoke. "Back in my homeland, I was trained as a knight, so I'm used to dangerous situations," he said with an air of someone who wasn't used to talking about himself, or maybe just didn't like it.

The tracks momentarily grabbed his attention, and he studied them before responding. "In a sense, I don't plan on tracking them down. The chasm is massive; one could easily get lost if they're not careful. That, and tracks could belong to a really powerful Pokémon or lead you into a trap," he said before directing his attention to the other male.

His eyes surveyed the paradox Pokémon, and he prepared himself. More than a few of them resembled a Jigglypuff. After using his Rotom Phone to get a read on their type, he directed his Pokémon to attack the Scream Tail head-on. Hopefully, having gained a partial Psychic typing, Dark-type moves would actually do something.

"Selene, use Dark Pulse on that Scream Tail. Aurora, use Copycat to copy Selene's Dark Pulse," he told them before falling quiet to watch the battle unfold. Hopefully, they would be able to keep these Pokémon from invading Hoenn.

Having received their orders, the two Eeveelutions released Dark Pulse from their mouths onto the oncoming Scream Tail. Having put more power behind the moves than necessary, he watched as the oncoming Scream Tail were thrown back and subsequently knocked out.

Well, that was three down, but he made sure to tell Selene and Aurora about putting too much power behind their moves. They would only end up wearing themselves out before the battle was even halfway finished if they kept that up.

Shaking her hand, he followed her gaze to Aurora and Selene. The look she gave the two was a bit confusing, but he decided not to ask. They did have a mission to do, after all. And they really did need to focus. Anything else could wait.

As she mentioned using the mission as a training session with her Cubone, he nodded in understanding. "Taking the lead works for me," his gaze remaining fixed on Mischa for a few seconds before he redirected his attention to Aurora and Selene, who were standing by his side fully alert.

"Selene, I need you to scout ahead. If you find anything, alert us," he told the Umbreon, who immediately took off to do as she was told. Hopefully, whatever they came across wouldn't be too dangerous.

Once he was sure she was doing as she was told, he turned his attention to Petra. "I think we should try and set some kind of perimeter," he said once he had focused his attention on her.[break] PETRA MONROE
