Handshake accepted, Keira took the seat across from Magnus, positioning Marshall between them.[break][break]
The way Magnus and Marshall interacted was telling: they were obviously fond of one another - brotherly, even. It was a good sign, as far as Keira was concerned.[break][break]
Magnus met her gaze, and she was impressed with the way he held it, ignoring the temptation to stare elsewhere. Combined with the way he seemed to fawn over Coco, Keira began to wonder just what sort of gangster this gentleman of a giant happened to be. Maybe this is just his way of getting people to let their guard down, she guessed.[break][break]
"Old friends," she answered quickly. It was more complicated than that, but Magnus didn't need to know all the details. "I was a member of Marshall's first gang. We met when we were kids." And now they were sleeping together, something a past version of her would have been appalled by the idea of.[break][break]
Don't lie to yourself, you always wanted him, a small voice in the back of her mind chastised. She ignored it.[break][break]
"That gang broke up when Marshall and some of the others got caught. I managed to escape." Because I'm clever and quick, her expression seemed to communicate. She did nothing to diminish her pride. "I spent the years in-between then and now making a name for myself as a thief. "Crimson" because of how often I successfully stole from Rocket." Their logo was red, after all.[break][break]
A waiter deposited a gin and tonic on a napkin in front of her. Keira blinked, then glanced at Marshall. She grinned at him, pleased that he'd remembered her preferred drink.

Hades backed off at Keira's insistence, but it was too late: several wooden crates had already caught fire. The Seviper hissed angrily and fled the flames, slithering into the shadows. Lightheaded and woozy, Keira also attempted to get away from the intense heat by crawling hastily across the ground.[break][break]
And then, all of a sudden, something unexpectedly cold brushed against her.[break][break]
She blinked, trying to make sense of the shapes around her. "Jazz?" She asked weakly, recognizing the curvy outline of the hostess. The heat was dying down, thankfully: Jazz and her Pokémon seemed to be taking care of it. Strong arms scooped Keira up - Hades, bless him - and she relaxed into the Charizard's embrace.[break][break]
"I'm poisoned," she slurred to Jazz. "You're in charge, okay? Get us out of here. Hades will help you."[break][break]
And with that, she promptly passed out.

With the Turtonator out of the way, Keira hopped off Hades's back, and walked over to the edge of the cliff. The view was incredible, and for a long moment, she simply stood there and took it in.[break][break]
Hoenn sprawled out before her, its landscape a varied mix of terrain. Her eyes followed the moving specs of vehicles on highways far below, feeling suddenly small in comparison to the vastness of their region - of their planet. From her vantage point, everything below seemed rather peaceful; were they all truly in some sort of supernatural danger? She thought of the local Mauville news reporting on the dangers of dream mist and paradox Pokémon. Last year, they'd nearly been annihilated by a giant meteor.[break][break]
It all felt rather surreal.[break][break]
Keira shrugged, rolling her shoulders, stretching out her arms. She wasn't the sort of woman to dwell on "what ifs" and possible doomsday scenarios. She was a practical, feet-solidly-planted-on-the-ground, get-shit-done sort. They were here to look for signs of Moltres, not dwell on that which felt outside of Keira's and Magnus's control.[break][break]
Whatever happened, Orthrus would endure it. She'd make sure of that.[break][break]
"Nothing up here!" She called back down to Magnus. She returned to Hades, ignoring a Mankey swinging its way past on vines that grew from cracks in the rock. Clever way to get around, really. She let it go.

Keira flexed her fingers, missing the contact with Marshall the moment it ended. She was glad for his steadfast presence, however, and her steps lightened as they proceeded together through the tunnel.[break][break]
"Oh wow," she breathed, upon seeing the oasis. It was a hidden gem beneath a harsh landscape: instead of howling winds, treacherous quicksand, and a relentless hot sun, there were palm trees for shade, sparkling water, and a pleasant, cool breeze. It was like they had walked through another portal into an entirely different rift, but she knew, logically, that they were still somewhere beneath the creepy black obelisk.[break][break]
Hades lumbered forward, eager to drink from the small underground lake. Keira turned to Marshall.[break][break]
"Should we go for a dip?" She flashed him a wicked grin, suggestive and playful. Without bathing suits, undergarments - or nothing at all - would have to do. She winked, then addressed Magnus with a more practical tone.[break][break]
"Definitely a good spot to make camp. Let's rest here for a bit, perhaps stay the night."[break][break]
A near-death scare was no joke. She knew he didn't like to show weakness, but she figured Jack Magnus could use the recovery time. They'd have plenty of time to keep exploring later.[break][break]

Keira liked the way Marshall Slade was leering at her hungrily, like a man who'd had a taste of paradise and wanted to go back for seconds. Whether he was afforded that privilege would depend on how their little meeting went; after all, not even Marshall's prowess in the bedroom could get her to work for an asshole. It all depended on this Jack Magnus fellow, and what sort of man he happened to be.[break][break]
"I'm ready." She smirked, confident.[break][break]
Keira's first impression of Jack Magnus was that he was a fucking giant. Like a professional basketball player of the most elite caliber, he practically took up an entire table himself, long legs sprawled out in front of him like tree trunks. Then she noticed the Houndour curled up in his lap, utterly content, and she was struck by the absurdity of such a massive, intimidating man casually petting an adorable canine in a surprisingly tender fashion. When he met her gaze, she noticed that his eyes were keen and alert, though sparkling with a similar mischief she often saw in Marshall's expression.[break][break]
"Pleasure to meet you, Jack Magnus," she held out her hand to him, and it looked ridiculously small in contrast to his own. "Crimson's an alias. My real name is Keira Torres."[break][break]
Why she felt compelled to divulge that information right away, she could not say. She had to admit, there was something likeable about the big fellow - as if he, too, were a friendly dog eager to add new members to his pack.[break][break]
Dogs bite too, she reminded herself.

Keira locked the door behind her to buy herself a little more time, then hurried down the steps into the gloom below. The muffled club music continued to thump rhythmically from above, the apparent soundtrack to her thieving operation.[break][break]
She needed light. With a flick of her wrist, she released Hades. The Charizard growled, pleased to be out, then flared the flame on the tip of his tail. It was a risk to flood the room with so much light, but this was the part of the operation that needed to be accomplished quickly. Not even a woman as attractive as Jasmine Blair could entertain a large crowd indefinitely.[break][break]
The basement seemed deserted, thankfully.[break][break]
Keira scanned the crates and boxes littering the underground chamber; there was a lot of cargo. Rocket's sure been busy, she thought, impressed. She began to walk through the room, looking for anything that seemed especially valuable. She eventually spied a crate with a symbol stamped onto it that looked suspiciously like a mega stone. Bingo, she thought.[break][break]
Just as she went to grab the crate, however, a hiss sounded. A pair of lightening quick fangs pierced her on the arm, and she stumbled back, yelping in pain. "Fuck," she cursed. It seemed the basement did have an additional security measure: a nasty-looking Seviper, intent on preventing exactly what Keira was trying to do: stealing from Rocket.[break][break]
Hades wasted no time blasting the Seviper with a plume of fire. "Hades, wait -- " Keira sputtered, her speech coming out slurred. All of a sudden, her head felt woozy. She needed to stop the Charizard from setting the entire basement on fire...[break][break]
She pulled out her phone and texted a single word to Jazz: HELP.[break][break]
So much for their flawless plan...

FERNANDO SILPH? The name was definitely familiar. He was the CEO of Silph Co, some bigwig League council guy. She'd seen his face on television before. Even back in Unova, Silph Co. had been a household name.[break][break]
"Setting up an appointment with a man like that won't be easy, Magnus," Keira sighed. "I'll see what I can do, though."[break][break]
Perhaps she could pull a few strings; the underworld was full of solutions to difficult problems if you knew where and how to find them. And if there was one thing she'd learned from running an establishment like Olympus, it was that nobody - not even the politically elite (especially not the politically elite) - was immune to sex appeal. Men like Fernando Silph could be relied upon to seek the services of escorts and entertainers.[break][break]
"Be careful with Rocket," Keira warned. "I think they've noticed us."[break][break]
And not in a good way. Keira had made it her business to steal from Rocket for years, but she had been successful in part because she was quick and subtle, a pest too minor to be worth pursuing. As Orthrus grew, so did their reputation. If they were going to try and present themselves as an equal to Rocket, they damn well needed to be ready to prove it. Once Rocket decided not to ignore a problem, they did not stop until it had been thoroughly and completely snuffed out.[break][break]
"I'm going to try and get to some higher ground, see if I can spot any Moltres feathers," She told Magnus, taking out a Pokeball. Hades appeared and she hopped up onto his back, urging him to fly to a ridge above the path. As he touched down on the rocky outcropping, a snorting sound alerted Keira to another presence: an angry Turtonator who's nap had been rudely interrupted. Keira threw a Pokeball so Hades could land without issue.

"At least it's cooler down here," Keira noted, taking in their new surroundings. Luckily for Hades (and Magnus, who was the tallest person Keira knew), the dim tunnel they had fallen into was quite cavernous; nobody seemed in any danger of hitting their head on the ceiling. As Halle and Berry used miniature bursts of EMBER to illuminate the space, Hades flared the flame on the tip of his tail, not wanting to be left out as a helpful accomplice.[break][break]
The light revealed a network of connecting tunnel openings ahead of where Magnus had fallen, three different pathways to choose from. Keira watched as Magnus's canines padded forward, choosing the middle path. Keira shrugged and followed after them. She trusted the noses of the Pokémon to lead them somewhere interesting (and hopefully devoid of danger).[break][break]
She glanced side-long at Magnus as he made his sudden request, her own expression softening as she heard the vulnerability in his tone.[break][break]
"They won't hear it from me," Keira assured Magnus, patting him on the arm.[break][break]
She let the Orthrus leader walk on ahead, lingering for Marshall to catch up with her. She preferred it when he was by her side, though that was something she often left unsaid.[break][break]

Keira watched as Jack Magnus let go of their offered aid, and then, quite dramatically, allowed himself to get sucked under. She blinked, dumbstruck by the audacity of his self-sacrifice, until she realized that...wait, was the sand parting?[break][break]
A hole the size of two Magnuses - and then some - had now formed in the quicksand, large enough for Keira and Marshall to peer through from where they were standing. Tentatively, Keira moved forward, careful not to get stuck on the periphery of the sizeable portal.[break][break]
"Not quicksand," she breathed, amazed. "It's the way inside."[break][break]
A disguised, hidden entrance into the space below the obelisk, she surmised. Grinning, she glanced at Marshall, eyes shining with a giddy excitement. This was turning out to be quite the adventure.[break][break]
"Hey! Hades!" She called up to the Charizard; he'd come back into view, circling around the obelisk as he made his way to the ground. He grunted, landing next to her and kicking up a cloud of sand. She hopped onto his back, returning Charon to his Pokeball.[break][break]
"Take me down there," she pointed, tone eager.[break][break]
He lumbered forward, then flew them both down.[break][break]
"Nice to see you alive and well, boss," she teased as the sprawled-out ass-up fallen Magnus came into view.

Keira's hand briefly touched Marshall's as she took the scrawled phone number from him. When their skin met, Keira felt strangely electrified, body buzzing with anticipation. She pocketed the note, thinking back to her time spent in Marshall's first gang, and how often she'd wanted to throttle him. He'd been like a rival to her: always better, faster, stronger. His relentless teasing hadn't helped matters, reliably causing her to spiral into fits of childish rage, tantrums that often led to exhausting training sessions or risky solo missions meant to impress.[break][break]
She'd worked hard to prove to this man that she was somebody worth valuing, and all it took was one minor touch several years later to unravel that history as easily as a cat batting at a ball of thread, transform it into something entirely different.[break][break]
Different? A part of you always wanted him, a voice whispered in the back of her mind.[break][break]
She ignored that voice, and hopped from her stool. Her expression promised the possibility of intimacy as she moved languidly past him in the direction of the pool tables.[break][break]
"That depends," she remarked, tone suggestive. "On whether or not you like losing."

Keira spotted him immediately upon being summoned. She could tell he was trying to look tough - big jacket, dark clothing - but his eyes gave it away: he was unfamiliar with the underworld and its various unspoken rules. This was a man who could get himself easily killed if he wasn't careful.[break][break]
What the hell was he doing here?[break][break]
"Welcome to my club," she greeted, sliding into the booth across from him. Her tone was pleasant, though it carried a sharp edge. Marjorie brought whisky sours soon after, and Keira nodded at the hostess appreciatively. She watched her guest stare openly at the beauty of Olympus - decor and entertainment alike - which didn't surprise Keira.[break][break]
She'd worked hard on this place, after all.[break][break]
"Like what you see?" Her smile was confident, the expression of a hungry viper. "Though something tells me you didn't come here for leisure."

Quicksand?[break][break]
Magnus's sudden command interrupted Keira's contemplative exploration of the obelisk's exterior, and she ripped her eyes away from the strange empty slots littering its surface. She sprinted around the massive base of the obelisk to Magnus's position, arriving in seconds. With agile footing, she was able to easily avoid stepping into the quicksand herself. However, her eyes widened as she watched the Orthrus leader sinking into the ground far too quickly for her liking.[break][break]
"Magnus! Stop moving! If you panic, you'll sink faster." That's how it worked in the movies, right?[break][break]
Glancing around for Hades and Bogie, Keira frowned. The two flying Pokémon were circling the tip of the obelisk high above, too far away to hear her if she called out to them. She pulled out a Pokeball, then hesitated. Zeus was massive. If she released the Steelix, would his size accidentally make the situation worse? He would not be able to avoid the quicksand like she had. What they really needed was...[break][break]
Keira switched Pokeballs. In a flash of light, Charon appeared.[break][break]
"Magnus, grab onto Charon's bone! We'll try and pull you out."[break][break]
The Marowak hopped forward and held out the long bone he carried, and Keira joined the Pokémon in pulling. Unfortunately, their combined weight was not enough to do much of anything when faced with the seven-foot-muscled-bulk of Jack Magnus and the quicksand's tight hold on him. The man barely budged.[break][break]
"Marshall!"

Keira opened her mouth to immediately reply, ready for the usual back-and-forth banter - but then Marshall agreed with her. Complimented her even. Twice.[break][break]
She blushed a shade deeper, and this time it had nothing to do with embarrassment.[break][break]
"Well, you know," she shrugged, feeling suddenly compelled to remain humble. "In this city it aint hard to be smart when you're surrounded by idiots." She winked, taking a sip of her drink. The thief eyed him over the lip of the glass, considering his proposal.[break][break]
Keira had changed too: mainly, she apparently found Marshall Slade nice to look at all of a sudden.[break][break]
"You've always been good at bringing people together," she said finally, finding it wasn't so difficult at all to sincerely compliment him back. She knocked back the rest of her drink, then slid it casually towards the bartender with the flick of two manicured fingernails.[break][break]
Keira had been alone for years, working solo, living independently. A part of her thrived in that sort of setting, but she also had to admit: she missed being part of a gang. It could be highly beneficial to collaborate with Marshall and Magnus; practically speaking, joining their gang would allow for bigger, better, more profitable hits. Rocket and the League, he'd said?[break][break]
"I'm in." But then she held up a hand. "If I like Magnus."
