They fell into step as they descended, though the darkness was so thick and almost alive enough to swaddle even the sounds of their close footpads.

Then the eyes began to pop up-- flashes in the gloom, bright enough almost to make him wince, then flashing in a myriad of blinks or halved in what was, apparently, a single eyelid displaying some facet of emotion.

He was about to make a comment about voyeurs when his feet went off the ground and it was only years of training his body that tightened his muscles enough to stop his head bouncing off the wall when they struck it.

The voice that seethed into him sounded like it could use a drink, really.

Then the world warps around them, shifting and changing. They’re no longer held to a wall by an invisible force, and Crispin stands, dusts himself off, and says, “Charming.”

A new voice croons to them from slightly less foreboding darkness. Crispin cocks his head at the handsome stranger, thinking.

Crispin has to turn away from the brightness. Despite not being able to see, he keeps running; thankfully his momentum just continues him in a straight line when he runs off the side of the walk.

A very monotonous and almost bored-sounding voice strikes him from his panic and when the stars in his gaze have cleared, he bends double and puts his hands on his knees to breathe.

“Lost suggests I was going somewhere in particular,” he replies-- no near-death experience is going to make him anything less than overconfident-- “which I am not. So, no, not lost. I just wasn’t expecting them to, say, swim through the air. Appreciate the save.”

He stands upright and slides a hand through sweaty purple hair, wincing slightly when he feels painful nodules at the top of his head. He chooses to ignore these, for now, as the lesser of many evils.

For two individuals who spent so much time together, Crispin found it rather unfortunate they never got to do so in times of leisure. So it was with half genuine excitement and half a sardonic sort of pleasure at the possibility of throwing Topher out of his comfort zone that Crispin invited him along to le carnaval.

It’s evening time, as everything in Mossdeep, ultimately, revolves around the night sky, which is a dusky purple cap fading into disappearing yellows and oranges. Paper lanterns in a variety of colors are strung from lines that cross above their heads in delicate arches. Children run through the streets with lit sparklers, laughing and shrieking. Food, trinkets, and games are hawked from booths decorated in the colors of the sunset.

“Are you hungry? Should we try some of the fare?” Crispin asked, pausing to contemplate a hastily drawn menu of various phallic-looking foods-on-sticks. “Or perhaps a game? This one is, ah, put the hat on the penis-- oh, no, that’s a Dugtrio, never mind, silly me.”

Maybe it was due to its tropical nature, but Hoenn really didn’t have a lot of places where Fire-types were prevalent. Reports of them inundating the regions where they were, however, had brought Crispin here.

A stream of purple fires flare in the dark, hung at particular points and strung along like fairy lights hung from the rocks. They guide the trio and their Pokemon deep, deeper still.

…over a small lip of earth, there it is. A huge chunk of glimmering stone, red as any ruby and taller than a man.

The ease at which he’d been able to access the Ultra Rift had been alarming. Crispin wondered if it was always like this.
