Not wishing for the young man to feel alone, the mercenary took a seat beside him. One leg crossed over the other as he turned to face the battlefield. Not quite understanding his trainer’s decision, Natsu huffs at him.

But that look didn’t last for long. The battle soon diverted his attention. As the little bear launched itself at him, the Bewear dropped into a fighting pose. That Aerial Ace would be super effective, and he had no choice but to let it hit. Dodging that move was next to impossible. “Tank it.” Though super-effective against half of him, the Bewear’s dense fur allowed him to take the flying-type moves with a lot less damage than expected. An Endure helped keep him from collapsing.

Blood dripped from his guarding arm as he let the bear push him back. “Give it back.” With a bellow, the bear responded with a Pain Split. This was followed by a blazing fast Payback.

His Caracosta, meanwhile, lumbers off toward the far side of the island. Some fruit washed up at this shore, a perfect snack for a hungry turtle. It also gives the rock type an easy vantage point from which to survey his charge. “Be careful.” The device at Kazuya’s belt warns as the reptile vanishes from sight.

To his surprise, another human appears on the horizon. However, this shock at that is nothing compared to the confusion at the other man’s ride. He did not realize those monstrosities could swim, much less do so with the weight of a full-grown man on top. When the other trainer climbs onto the beach, Kazuya provides ample room. He offers a silent nod of greeting as well.

Then, a brow rose as he noticed the continuing ripples in the water. “It appears we have company.” This statement was directed not to the trainer but to the Pokemon in the water. A smile splits his lips as a curious turtle’s head rears above the water. It’s then that he feels static down his back. Jumping to the side, the mercenary barely avoids a Wild Charge. “Pardon me.”

A Bewear emerges from the ball at his side. A quick battle follows one that ends when the Bewear’s sand coating renders those electric-type attacks useless. “Good fight,” Kazuya murmurs as he flicks one of a few Pokeballs at the zappy cat. Intrigued by the noise, his Wooper reappears.

[attr="class","kazu2"]A sigh pushes past Kazuya’s lips as the bear locks itself in place. There is a reason that phrase has two versions, you fool. While it was often important to grab the bull by the horns, it often ended in pain. Those bits of bone were sharp. They were also connected to hundreds of pounds of muscle. It was these that bulged as the water type began to throw the bear around.

With a noise of surprise, the bear is ripped off its feet. Its second paw desperately grasps at the beast’s spiral horn as the ride turns from exhilarating to terrifying. A horn draws a crimson line down the bear’s chest, its claws almost slipping free. “Slow it down.” Kazuya’s voice cuts through the hoofed whirlwind. Already aching, the ursine does its best to do what it's told. His eyes flare a bright red as he activates a Pain Split. The attack aims to put every one of its movements back against it—letting the bull spell its end. As this activates, the bear goes for an Ice Punch.

This does not change as the man speaks, his voice emerging from somewhere near his waist. “I believe so.” Kazuya recognizes the Head Ranger. “I am honored by such an esteemed opponent.” Though he expects a burst of animosity, his better half wins out. For now. This young man would have been sweeping bathroom stalls during his framing. The lenient outlook is helped by the sight of the Pikachu at his side.[break][break]

Memories flood in. A Pichu curled up in a young Kazuya’s bed, a foundational piece in a pyramid of stuffed animals. That same electric type evolving in a schoolyard brawl. The pair standing side-by-side with a trophy in hand. At the electric type’s introduction, one of Kazuya’s brows jerks upward. “That is an…interesting name.” Natsu, meanwhile, is unimpressed by the electric rat or its trainer. He didn’t care about what place this chocolate man held in the human hierarchy. They were here to battle not yap![break][break]

“I’m Kazuya, and this—” He pointed toward the With a look of determination, the fighting-type stepped to the starting line. “--is Natsu.” The bear slammed its paws together. Icy energy flickered between them.

[attr="class","kazu2"]The older man could feel Natsu’s excitement. Even after a full day of this, the Bewear hungered for more. The thrill of battle was its own reward. And, while no longer as confrontational as he’d been in his youth, Kazuya felt the embers of this feeling kindle in his gut. A glance at the Swampert made him think this match-up was a suitable one. The axolotls were hardy creatures, as flexible as the mud they so often called him.[break][break]

Suddenly, the world was awash in a meteor belt of stone. One of these flew for Kazuya’s face, the mercenary batting it grumpily aside. "Hm." But, the second it dropped to the ground, that displeasure disappeared. Battle was not clean. To sanitize it and remove the risk was to deprive it of its beauty. Doing so would pay as much honor to combat as pulling away petals did to the rose. “Deflect with Super Power!” With a nod, the burly bear unleashed all of its fighting spirit from within, aiming to hit the ground and keep those boulders at bay.

[attr="class","kazu2"]“!?” The Bewear staggers back in the face of the wind burst. His entire body ruffles with a sneeze as bug dust goes up his nose. The noise is surprisingly cute, more like a squeaky toy than the roar the ursine’s frame would imply. Shaking his head like a wet dog, the bear narrows his watering eyes at the floating bee. [break][break]

Kazuya’s jaw clenches tight as he again forces down the wildfire within. Instead, his orders are dispatched calmly. ”Bring her down.” With no moves available to erase the distance, the pair must work to keep the wasp close to the ground. Suddenly, the bear’s eyes catch on a nearby ornamental rock. With pounding legs, he scoops the thing into his arms. With a grunt, Natsu chucks the rock at the bee. Though, it’s an unlikely hit (thanks to the bee’s nimble nature), he’s hoping to bring it back within paw’s reach.[break][break]

And, in truth, Natsu enjoyed any opportunity to show off his Strength.

As the bear misses, his momentum carries him over. For a moment, he teeters on the edge of falling flat. A thick foot kicks out to steady him. With a graceful pivot, Natsu turns to face the ghoul. Now, he sees the blue flames building between her tendrils. He remembers the burn of fire from his cubhood. The way his fur went up like kindling. [break][break]

He knew this was one of his greatest weaknesses. The same fur that gave him durability made him flammable. Beady eyes widened slightly at the sight. But—though his face flashed anxiety—Kazuya’s head remained cool. Having them react with panic would only cause harm. It would give their opponent insight into their potential weaknesses. At the same time, it would disrupt what cooperation this battle had created. “Move, Natsu.” [break][break]

The bear tries to dodge out of the fire’s way. His tiny, nearsighted eyes lock onto the ghost as he aims to land another Ice Punch. But the flames catch his fur and he staggers back. He desperately tries to extinguish the fire as he passes outside the fighting area. Kazuya watches as that last heart fades.[break][break]

"Good job, your highness." The man ends with a twinkling eye. A quick Water Gun from his Wooper leaves Natsu wet and smoking but unharmed. With a final nod, the man turned to leave. His golden eyes seek out a doctor to treat his Pokemon.

The insect looked strong—its wings and carapace well-formed. “Thank you.” This, paired with its unique coloration, implied this creature had likely been sought out by its trainer. It was not an accident.

The League had imprisoned him for almost a third of his life. They had tortured and interrogated him for years for a crime he did not commit. His beloved Pokemon were sold off like cheap trinkets at a flea market. To say he despised the organization would be an understatement. But, oddly, none of this animosity linked through to the ranger in front of him. “It is a pleasure to meet you." Being mad at a Ranger for the actions of their seedier side was merely misdirecting his rage. He’d save that for the rats who deserved it, whoever they may be.

That did not mean some part of him would not enjoy wiping that look from her face. But, first, she would need to climb off her bug’s wing.

Then, the young woman offered her well wishes. “I aim to.” The mere implication that he ever did anything less than his best was akin to sacrilege. He may have been a self-absorbed twat, but he rarely said things he could not back up. With a nod to his bear, he struck out quickly, “Ice Punch!” With surprising grace, the intimidating bear charged toward the insect with a flurry of frigid punches.

There is a flash of irritation as the Bewear does not hit the ghost in its center. A deep breath steadies the man. lDo not be angry at Natsu. He does not understand you as they did. No, his irritation would instead continue to build against the nameless, faceless coward who had locked him up in the first place. The person who’d conjured charges to suit their own needs.

The balls of energy rocket towards the fighting type. “Dodge.” The bear does its best to do as it's told, eager to honor the man who’d taken it in. As it shifts, its eyes narrow. “Hit her with another Payback.” Trying to rush beneath the Energy Balls, the towering fighting type aims shadowy fists at the Mismagius’s face.

It’s robotic. “This isn’t your first battle, correct?” The man’s toothy grin is almost infectious, something that still belonged to a more foolhardy him. “Then, we are the same.” A veteran did not have to meet some arbitrary number of battles to qualify. Whether it was your first time drawing blood or your 300th, the title did not change. Only, in the end, the ways you might deal with it. [break][break]

The Superpower did its job. Good.[break][break]

The bear’s expression turned into one of glee. An opponent who met him head-on—instead of hiding behind wings or distance—was a refreshing change of pace. His stubby legs quickly ate up the turf between them as the fighting type lifted his hands. With one hand, he moved to literally take the bull by the horn, turning its deadly horns away. With the other, he aimed to deliver a Hammer Arm right to the bull’s side.

Now, those same people looked at him with eyes full of suspicion. He may have been vindicated in a court of law, but that did little to sway the court of public opinion. It was often easier to shift a boulder than it was to move a single man’s mind. “You are far too kind.” She reminded him of his eldest daughter in a way.

Let’s see how she does. Kazuya does not immediately call out an attack. He enjoys his opponents making the first move. It said a lot about a person. And, in this case, it offered a boost of confidence. A hand held out in a subtle gesture for pause as Natsu moved to follow the little garbage bag. It seems she plans to keep her distance. Smart girl. Unfortunately, it was not a strategy he could allow.

“Take it.” Natsu’s Fluffy ability allowed him to play tank, as long as no one set him on fire. With a grumble, the bear charged right into the toxic bomb. Its fist swung to bat the main mass of poison away. A grin split Kazuya’s face. The toxins didn’t seem to take hold, fortunately. “Payback.” With a roar, the ursine aimed to send all of the Trubbish’s hard work back at it with a shadowy punch.

Seeing no need to repeat the greeting, he instead turned to banter. “And why wouldn’t you expect me?” There is a tease implied by his words. “I would not miss the VCT.” He murmured, his AI voice not quite managing to convey his nostalgia. “I’ve participated many times before.” [break][break]

For a moment, his Bewear shifted into his former partner—a take-no-names Alolan Raichu.

A hand poised upon his scarf as if looking for comfort. A habit he’d developed from years of picking the scar at his neck. But that expression softened into a soft, indulgent expression. “I would be honored.” The bear, not caring who his opponent was, agreed. Though, when he saw the Trubbish, there was a tiny wrinkle in his plans.[break][break]

He couldn’t just punch garbage! Still, he made his way to the designated battling line. The VR screen overlayed beady eyes as he stared down at the Trubbish. A few stretches followed as he tried to limber himself up.[break][break]

“I'm Kazuya.” He nodded to his bear. “He is Natsu.” His voice came from somewhere around his belt. His tongue a shriveled stump in his mouth. The species of the girl's partner tells him much about her. Most of it is to be respected.

A brow went up at the young lady’s order. What an interesting strategy. In his case, it’d been a way to power up his Bewear’s currently limited attack pool. The ghost type in front of him presented a challenge—one this newer Pokemon had few ways to counter. “Dodge.”[break][break]

The Bewear attempted to do as ordered. But evading attacks of the mind was not as easy as evading physical strikes. “Strike back with Ice Punch.” Forcing himself into the fray, the bear swung at the ghoulie with a hand of winter and cold.

[attr="class","kazu2"]After taking a few hours to just tour the battlefield, scoping out the competition, Kazuya returned the gear to a visible place. He was glad Natsu’s move set had been changed right before the event. The addition of Ice Punch already proved itself useful on more than one occasion. With their break at an end, the former hotshot wove his way through the crowd. Unfortunately, most trainers already seemed occupied.

Then, his golden eyes caught on a young lady departing from a completed battle. The bear next to him started forward with a vicious grin. “Hold,” Kazuya ordered calmly, and the towering Bewear instantly obeyed. Much slower in his approach, Kazuya did his best not to frighten the young woman. Many were intimidated by his size and general appearance. A fact that had been true long before he went to jail.

A large hand rose in greeting.”Good afternoon.” The mercenary bowed from the waist to the young woman and her partner. “I am Kazuya. This is Natsu.” The bear growled some kind of greeting. The sight of the bee activated some primal desire in it. It wanted honey, and he didn’t care that this wasn’t a bee. “Would you be so kind as to battle us?” His typical ventriloquy ‘act’ was on full display.
