Sidney lets out a noisy breath, and the air that puffs from her cheeks sends strands of her hair billowing upward. “That’s a technicality. Rotoms are still inherently little specters.”[break][break]
Everyone knows that.[break][break]
It’s obvious the beast is putting up a fight, strained as the guy is. And yet he initially deflects. “What? Think a girl can’t handle something like this?” She tracks and detains things for a living, ‘course she can manage.[break][break]
Not that he knows that.[break][break]
“Oh, you guess, huh?” Her hands slot on her hips as she looks at him, a brow arched in skepticism. Letting out a quiet huff, she unclips a pokeball from her belt and taps the release.[break][break]
“Tsumugi,” she croons breezily, and the ariados’ mandibles click audibly, “he needs some extra sturdy binding.” Pale eyes scan over the styler, then flit to Lance briefly. “That styler just isn’t cutting it.”[break][break]
The arachnid scuttles forward on nimble legs, circling the Walking Wake as she spins a durable, shimmering SPIDER WEB to tie the paradox pokemon’s hind legs together.[break][break]
Sidney’s arms fold across her chest as she looks at him expectantly.

This feels a bit out of the ordinary for her. Then again, Sidney has come to acknowledge her experience with JAMES BAKER up to this point had already been a deviation from the norm at every turn. She’s not one to stick around, or really make time in between tracking her marks, or making cargo drops.[break][break]
And yet when he asks her over, she goes. Inexplicably.[break][break]
The place is certainly cleaner than she expects of a twenty-something guy with roommates–not that she’d judge. She’s honestly of the messier variety herself. Clothes draped on chairs, papers and file folders scattered.[break][break]
“Oh? Dunno the last time anyone’s cooked for me,” she says as she’s ushered in. Honestly, she doesn’t really know the last time a date was just a quiet night in.[break][break]
He’s not the only one who’s been busy with work, and for someone as adventurous and go go go as herself, it’s weirdly nice to slow the pace. Even if just for an evening.[break][break]
Sidney follows him into the kitchen, the scent of cooking food greeting her. “Smells nice, whatever it is.” She tries to peek around him, curious, to look at the stove. “Nope. Not picky either.” She winks, just to prove that she means that in more ways than one.[break][break]
And maybe to fluster him. Just a bit.

She doesn’t have anything specific in mind behind the joke. She supposes it depends on how this all goes now. For the most part, though, she leaves it up to mischievous whim.[break][break]
“Gotta get your start in delivery service somewhere, I guess. Wouldn’t ya know it, I used to do delivery for Popplio Johns back in high school.” Technically, she’s still making delivery drops, but Sid still figures the smuggling business is a decent step up.[break][break]
It beats the fast food service by miles. “Do you like Lilycove?” she asks instead of mentioning this. “I’ve been thinking about staying there long term. I’ve mostly been bouncing around.”[break][break]
Her shoulder rises to shrug slightly. “It’s pretty nice. I lived in Goldenrod for a while too. Soon as I could get out, really. But I actually just came from Kalos.” Her eyes skirt up toward his, wondering how he’ll respond to how much of a tumbleweed she is. “Got bored, I guess. Wanted to try somewhere new.” Her smile turns a touch wan. “Kinda restless, if that wasn’t obvious by now.”

Her words are teasing between the heated press of her lips against his. There’s an edge of apathy to her tone as well, because who ever said she really cares if that were to happen?[break][break]

“I can do it, I just don’t really feel like it at the moment,” she answered with a shrug of her shoulders. Though it would make things a bit more exciting, wouldn’t it? On the other hand, it could damage the equipment and this thing looked expensive as hell.[break][break]
And Sidney was not keen on covering any damage fee she could get slapped with for breaking company equipment. So she turned back to Frank with an arched brow. “Not a fighter, though. What are ya then—desk jockey?”[break][break]
She watched him meander, content to remain where she’d settled herself. Though the incessant tap of her foot betrayed her actual restlessness. “Guess that makes sense. Or maybe they have some fancy pants cloud the data goes straight to.”[break][break]
Her head tilted, suddenly curious as he signaled for her. “What’s up?” She wandered closer, brows furrowing as Frank pointed at a disruption in the earth that didn’t come from the machine itself.[break][break]
Hands perched on her knees, she stooped down. Tentatively, her fingers reached to trace over the shape of one track. “These are kinda fresh,” she commented, casting a sidelong glance up at her companion. “Don’t suppose you recognize the shape, huh?”[break][break]

“Oh, well that’s your first mistake,” she replies dryly, a bark of laughter sneaking out after when he tacks on a hasty hot stuff. “Creative.” It could assumed that others might take offense to being labeled so objectively.[break][break]
But lucky for him, Sidney had never really been the sort to care all that much. Plus, it’s kind of flattering, though.[break][break]
She eyes the heat rotom trying to subdue the walking wake. “And I thought you didn’t like ghosts,” she adds with a smirk, “didn’t take you for a liar.” Sidney parrots the words back at him. Tit for tat.[break][break]
Her noivern hisses as the Walking Wake thrashes and tries to break loose of the miasma that the other pokemon drops over its mind. “What is that?” It looks like suicune—any johtonian worth their weight would know who suicune is.[break][break]
This isn’t suicune.[break][break]
Color her curious.[break][break]
“Not often enough, clearly,” she returns, skirting closer to where he’s obviously struggling. “Need a hand, tough guy?”

All hell breaks loose in a matter of seconds.[break][break]

“What the fu–” Her curse is quickly drowned out by a rumbling that swells to deafening noise.[break][break]

One minute, she’s standing there calmly– scratching the top of Noct’s ducked head as he coos. And in the next, there’s a cacophony of shattering rock and crushed foliage as something blasts through the rock wall to her distant right. Dusty plumes of dirt and rubble swell up and obscure Sid’s view as she lets out a startled shriek. [break][break]

Her noivern rumbles out a shrill, defensive cry and throws himself in front of her– wings flapping to push away the rush of dust and debris that gusts toward them. She’s still left coughing when she inhales silty air.[break][break]

Out of the corner of her eye, she thinks she sees the angry lash of an aquamarine tail, flashing out the haze, before it's obscured again.[break][break]

And then that voice. She knows that voice.[break][break]

When the dust settles, there he is. Late nite shopper guy.[break][break]

“I’m starting to think you like scaring the ever loving shit out of me,” she remarks by way of greeting.

Sidney’s head lolled to the side in pronounced thought as she hummed. “Hmm… I’m not too sure,” she eventually answered, but not without a groan following. “But god, I hope not.” If she were being honest, though, she’d say it was part of the gig. They were probably expected to, of course, she would do exactly that in order to keep her paychecks from being halted due to an insufficient job.[break][break]

But that didn’t mean she wanted to, no matter how capable of handling combat she might’ve been.[break][break]

“He’ll let us know, though,” She pointed upward with a glib smile.[break][break]

From a rocky ledge above, her noivern let out a rolling chirp of sound–an occasional alert that he hadn’t spotted anything nearby that was out of the ordinary. Noct’s large ears swiveled as he peered around the cavern, yellow eyes catching the glow of nearby tera crystals embedded in the walls.[break][break]

Well, that was all well and good, of course– so long as they could actually hear him over the mechanical din of the machinery drilling into the. She was confident in the noivern’s skills, but perhaps she should’ve been a bit more concerned that his sensitivity was muddled by the noise as well.[break][break]

“You’d think they’d assign people who know what they’re doing with these things,” she called back as she gestured to the rig. Sciencey type, Sidney was not.

Sidney was fairly certain that she didn’t get paid enough for this.[break][break]

The name of the game was to go where she had been assigned, and she did, but she might’ve thought twice about it if she’d known what it was she was going to be met with. “Sure wish I’d called out today, right about now,” she remarked dryly as she watched the mass of paradox pokemon hacking and slashing at one another to come out on top of the pile.[break][break]

Her confidence was a sound and inflated thing, but really? Maybe this oscar clayton was some sort of hella skilled sleeper cell? Would he unleash some insane level of power that made this whole scene look like a cake walk? That seemed too good to be true.[break][break]

In fact, her companion seemed just as irritable with their assigned task as she was. Sidney’s expression withered, not at Oscar, but with the sheer ridiculousness they seemed to be saddled with.[break][break]

“How’re two of us gonna take all of these–” she halted her complaint and let out a decisive huff. “No, nevermind. No use questioning it.”[break][break]

Before jumping into the mayhem as she typically prone to doing, Sidney glanced sidelong at Oscar and then looked downward on the bloodbath again. “Maybe there’s like…a top boss? Y’know? The one that spawns the rest.” If that’s even how it worked. “Look for one that’s bigger than the rest.”[break][break]

She didn’t know, though. Annoyingly, all of the paradox pokemon looked pretty damn big.

Committed to the cause, one of her smuggling drops is re-routed to the Giant Chasm. The bartered supplies are better served in being dispersed through Rocket ranks as groups are sent further into the giant crevice that has spliced the Silent Icelands in two.[break][break]
But with her independent streak as strong as ever, any sort of group endeavor is dismissed. And so when her task for the day is done, she wanders out into the unknown with only her noivern trailing behind.[break][break]
She’s not too worried, though. Her tracking skills should help her make her way back if they get turned around.[break][break]
As she tromps through the undergrowth, Sidney puffs out a sigh and stops to wipe her brow with the back of her hand. Bug-type pokemon buzz in a cacophony of sound through the damp heat that bears down from above. “For a chasm in the middle of a tundra, it sure is humid,” she grumbles in annoyance.[break][break]
Beside her, Noct hisses his agreement. Large sonar ears swivel while they rest–always on alert.

Sidney isn't wholly oblivious to the effect she'd once had on Mila. Still has to some degree, apparently. It had always made things easier for Sid, in terms of getting her way. Not that she'd tried to take active advantage of the other woman.[break][break]
It just happened that way.[break][break]
And Sidney had never tried to be someone she wasn't. She'd never tried to make any pretense at being more. More affectionate, more doting, more present. She knew she was flighty. She'd never claimed to be otherwise.[break][break]
Their connection had run its course. It was simple as that, and she'd never read into it the way Mila had.[break][break]
Though that wasn't to say she hadn't enjoyed their relationship while they'd had one. She very much had. To insinuate otherwise would be a disservice to the very fun, very talented mila alexopoulos.[break][break]
"So I'm learning!" she chirps happily. To Sid, this is a lighthearted reunion, she's pleased to see Mila. "But you came back. So you must be just as drawn to it, still." She glances back, planning on teasing Mila for this particular habit of hers, only for her eyes to go wide with alarm.[break][break]
The tendril of loose blood drifting not far away. The flicker of a shadowy tailfin just beyond the other's shoulder. "Mila," she breathes, playfulness evaporating from her low tone. Her hand slowly inches toward a pokeball at her hip. "Get behind me. Now. Slowly."
