Shit. The League can hit like a force of nature. Clover burns through pokemon in the short time it takes to intercept Greyson and for Delarosa to pop out and assist. The League gets pushed back, but there's some damage to the security of the cave and Clover's only got their Archen holding on for dear life. It's humbling, as a nice way of putting things. [break][break]

"Sorry," Clover later apologizes, "I should've run for backup first." It was overzealous to take on someone famous for their strength, and the home court advantage had given just about nothing to them in terms of upper hand.

The flare blitz is an excellent move. It's heat wraps around Clover like a warm hug. It reminds him of home, of Fallarbor, of the tucked corner of a volcano. He cheers as the Arcanine moves quickly and spreads flame around the ruinous beast. "Nice one!" But the battle is far from over. They will continue to battle until it is called. [break][break]

Clover holds his passed out Oricorio in his cupped hands, his tired Archen recovering in his pokeball. "That was tough," they said, petting a finger against Oricorio's feathers. "I'm glad we weren't fighting for real. I've gotta practice and get some pokemon that are as strong as yours." Arcanine would fit in their collection... so long as it didn't feel tempted to chase their bird pokemon.

Huh. That was an interesting notion. She had met some pretty dumb people, though, so she wasn't sure human intelligence was the goal post. Yet, the legendary pokemon were supposed to guide people. At least, according to some creation myths. In her own, Kyogre, Groundon, and Rayquaza were vessels for the will of Sea Sister, Earth Mother, and Sky Sister respectively. Then, there were Nature's Giants, the Regis, who were guardians and sentries for the natural world. [break][break]

Unfortunately, those guardians had rested too long. The world was on fire. "The Rangers," they spoke slowly, trying to figure out a kind way to say it in case the kids were listening, "are like a bandage on a broken leg. They're a good organ in a sick body." The Rangers could only address symptoms, not cause. [break][break]

"They can't pull the problem out by the root." That's why she needed to create a catastrophe the Giants would have to respond to. She needed to force their hand and summon the attention of Earth Mother to fix things before the war split Hoenn in half.

"Fallarbor," Clover offers with a smile. "I'm Hoyeon, indigenous to Hoenn. This was my home before it was called that." His brow furrowed as Josh said he was from Johto. "Circumstances brought you to Hoenn specifically?" He didn't realize it was rude to pry. But Johto was a cool region. The people were friendlier than those in Kalos, or so his dad had always told him. It was kind of awesome that Josh was a newcomer to Hoenn and still made it to gym leader and champion. [break][break]

The tale of his Pyroar was unfortunate, but they didn't quite understand the importance of the hierarchy. "Aren't you king of the Pride?" The Hoyeon had a Sachem that led their sect. She hummed thoughtfully. "How do they prove themselves?" Oricorio left the contact of the Pyroar and fluttered up to Clover's shoulder to rub against her.

Clover's feet are glued to the ground at the sight of it, but Howard pulls him to safety. They feel like throwing up; the pokemon looks as if its commanding the storm, or heralding it, or a part of it. It's terrifying to stand before a pokemon so powerful that they need the protection of the otherworldly pokemon to protect them. [break][break]

"What is it? Who caught it? What is it?" They reach at the pokeballs on their belt as Archen pulls at her clothes anxiously. "I don't have any ground types. Um, Oricorio, Tropius, Scatterbug..." Shit, they were so unprepared for this expedition. They'd caught more pokemon just before the trip and hadn't brought them because they were too new to her team and might not know how to listen to her just yet. She'd thought they'd be liabilities. [break][break]

They stared at Howard. "How do we fight it?"

Their work on the wall went swimmingly. Clover filled the air with incessant questions but Howard's patience prevailed. She even pocketed a cool as stone stuck in the rock wall. [break][break]

But the storm that had been brewing had snuck up on them during their work. Clover brought Archen in close and stepped back from the wall, trying to ease the bird's anxiety about the storm. "We need to get out of here." He flinched as the winds hiked up, tossing a sharp shard that nearly sliced their face. It shattered against the rock wall, its dusting of shards exerting some sort of electrical surge. "What the hell was that?" [break][break]

They looked back at the storm and saw something large and yellow coming their way... a body of pure lightning? "What the hell is that?"

They had pep in their step as they walked along the wall. "Yeah? My Archen and yours can become besties." She was eager to give her pokemon some playdates. Her trusty companion was the culmination of her love of flying types and her inherent affinity for more grounded pokemon. [break][break]

"Okay," she said as she squared herself with the wall, "is rock slide going to be too dangerous for opening the wall up a bit?" They had less equipment than an average archaeologist site might have, but they had more pokemon. She wished she had more burrowers on her team.

He claps his hands together excitedly at the prospect of getting a buddy. "If you get one, we can match." They weren't sure about fossil freaks, but there was a bit of excitement in his hometown about fossils. Under Earth Mother, deriving pokemon from fossils was surely one of Her gifts for them. [break][break]

"Let's learn, then," she responded eagerly, hands on her hips as she let the Stakataka pass her. She walked in line behind it, keeping her eyes on it in case it tipped backwards. Being smushed by one would be less than ideal. "If we're quick, we can avoid that thunder storm or whatever that keeps inching forward." It loomed in the distance, promising trouble.

Clover really wanted to see a mega-giant stakataka. When Howard finished, she rose to her feet and dusted herself off. "Well, what are we waiting for? We should put your field to work, and maybe your Stakataka too, if it likes to sightsee. Your thing is fossils, yeah? What kinds do you think we can find here?" They really wanted to explore the area and see what was going on. Since the storm on the horizon wasn't at them yet, there was still some time to take advantage of the odd, unbelonging world. [break][break]

Archen cawed in support of the idea. "I could always use a friend for him, if there are little, um, feather fossils? Around?" They rubbed at his head, which the bird cooed at. "My dad likes fossils and stuff, got me into rocks. He also helped me with this lost little Archen. We found some remnants of his fossil in Fallarbor, but we don't know who actually revived him." And who could abandon such a cute face?

Tamato berries were spicy and dry. It was an acquired taste, but taillows had acquired it. The city had put out a warning for trainers to avoid feeding or interacting with the taillows. They could get aggressive and would even try to steal the backpacks from travelers to check for the fruit. [break][break]

Unfortunately, it was harvest season for Lavaridge's Tamato orchard. For every KO'd or otherwise subdued taillow turned in, the orchard paid handsomely. Naturally, Clover find themselves fending off trees from taillows for the sweet reward of cash. "Keep going," she urged Oricorio, who used teeter dance to confuse a taillow that had been leering at her.

"That could be fun!" They would get a lot out of a practice battle. It wasn't like they had a lot of opportunity to fight against other trainers since her friends at home didn't really own pokemon like that and didn't care for the culture of battling that Hoenn was filled with. But there were important skills involved that she needed to develop for her own well-being and survival. [break][break]

They flinched backwards at the Rotom's appearance, feeling nervous, but the Rotom seemed relaxed enough. "Oh, well if it doesn't always shock outside of tech then that's not so bad." It's possession of technology was super interesting, but he wasn't sure it was his thing. But having your own tech support at hand was surely beneficial. [break][break]

"Your Rotom seems- hey!" Their peripheral vision suggested Archen was in trouble. It was readily confirmed as her bird was struggling in the mouth of the Mawile's external maw. "Oh, no you don't!" She got in close and stuffed her foot onto the bottom of the mouth, her hands lifting the upper jaw. Archen flew out and Clover removed herself before it could snap closed on her. The mouth flicked up to try and chase Clover, so he tossed a pokeball defensively to keep it down. [break][break]

A little out of breath, he said, "this place is kind of crazy, but at least there seems to be no war movement out here."
