Privately, Allegra thinks that this girl has the right idea; the Cyclizar, too, are avoiding contact with the pulsating, stone-like object. Despite that she doesn't turn away from it herself, as she has to face the stranger to reassure her. Except that this is no stranger but her little sister — then again, she's been gone for so long that Vitalia might as well be a stranger — she has no regrets, yet her chest squeezes with guilt and love all the same.[break][break]

“No need to apologize, mia cara, it’s alright.” With her free hand Allegra pats the girl's shoulder, more relieved than she can say at the fact that Lia doesn't seem to resent her. She wants to embrace her sister, but it'd be too fast; too forceful. Instead she holds the kerchief out again, smiling when the girl finally takes it. “There, that should help you feel better.”[break][break]

When Vitalia goes on, though, her smile fades and her brow furrows. Her sister… doesn't speak like that, does she? It's been so long. Abruptly this face so like her own flickers and changes, the girl's eyes still green but everything else unfamiliar. In the next moment she sees her sister again, then the stranger, and then she slides her eyes shut with a small sigh.[break][break]

“Yes, I see what you mean,” she murmurs in the darkness, though Vitalia’s face is burned into the back of her eyelids. A thought occurs to her and her eyes snap open, the sea within them roiling, and she grips the girl's shoulder urgently. “Your name,” is all she says. “I need to know your name.”

Upon entering the cave, Allegra is relieved to see that it seems safe enough. Now that she has a moment to catch her breath, the woman registers for the first time just how young her partner in this simulation is — about Vitalia's age, maybe, or at least the age Allegra remembers her youngest sister as. Despite the years and the distance, she can't help her sudden desire to protect this complete stranger.[break][break]

“Thank you,” she answers primly, dismounting and producing a handkerchief from her pocket; with one hand she lifts her hair, wedding band glistening in the strange light of the cave, drying her sweat with the other. "I haven't, no," she replies, now dabbing at her face and forehead, her breath evening while she goes about it. “Have you?”[break][break]

Allegra pockets her kerchief and pulls out a spare to offer the stranger. Being sweaty and hot is no less gross in a simulation, though the girl herself doesn't seem to mind as she's already moving deeper in —[break][break]

“What's the matter?” She asks, alarmed, going up to the other with the handkerchief still in hand. Oh, she sees the matter now. Cazzo. Yet Allegra is the adult here, the elder sister — for a moment the stranger's hair seems green in the dimness —; her composure mustn't waver. “Careful, don't go out again! Let's just stay where we are for the moment.”

Allegra isn't sure of what she was expecting out of this simulation, but being flung into what appeared to be ancient times wasn't it. Still, she takes her new mount and the surrounding jungle in stride despite the heat, smiling at the other person — also riding a Cyclizar — with her usual grace.[break][break]

Then, an explosion sounds.[break][break]

She bends forward on pure instinct, nearly touching her mount’s neck as it begins running for their lives without command. Real or not, this scenario is unnerving, though Allegra supposes it's also an anomaly worth studying.[break][break]

When the path diverges, the stranger looks to her for guidance. The coordinator doesn't hesitate: Though not a survivalist, she is a quick thinker — and the choice before her is easy.[break][break]

“There’s no hope of outrunning the debris,” she shouts back, already steering her Cyclizar in the direction of the cave. Its interior might be unsafe too, but she'd rather take her chances with that than face certain death. “We must take shelter!”

Allegra simply nodded in agreement at first, though when the other Milotic decided that a demonstration was in order she only just managed to keep her surprise — and the stab of fear that went through her — from showing. If not for her many years of experience in maintaining perfect composure, she might well have shrieked at that sight. If nothing else it was clear that Shalin had a talent for this, and Levy too seemed to be enjoying himself. For her part, the coordinator stroked Adagio's head once more; whether to calm him or herself, she wasn't sure.[break][break]

“You've more than earned the right to call yourself that,” was Allegra's only comment, with a small smile that widened as they went on to discuss coordination. “Why, thank you. I've never considered Pokemon Contests to be all that difficult, myself, but I have always had a talent for the arts. I enjoy them greatly.” She made no mention of how a thing as simple as her enjoyment was a form of defiance, let alone to how merely participating in contests was a way to regain her agency. In fact, she banished all thoughts of her family as soon as they surfaced. “I can't say I'm familiar with the Mauville City Gym. What do you mean by... an animal, exactly?”[break][break]

She would much rather have stayed here and kept up amiable conversation, yet Shalin was already leading the way into the ruins. Resigned, Allegra spurred her own mount to follow, though the Ranger's reassurance had done nothing to assuage her concerns. Even with their Pokémon the party was still small, with only six members — and that was counting the presently absent Cadenza.[break][break]

For all her worry, though, Allegra had to admit that she was impressed by the ruins. She craned her neck this way and that, taking in every detail of the gorgeous architecture and showing her awe openly, if discreetly. “I will have to compose a song in honor of this place,” she murmured, more to Adagio than to Shalin, only half-listening to the latter's words.[break][break]

“Yes, I assumed you had a map,” Allegra said, absently, her eyes still on the towers. They were marvelous, so much so that even the implication that Shalin would have led her here without a map didn't phase her. It barely even registered. “This place... It must have been here that a legendary Pokémon dwelt, if the stories are true.”[break][break]

Allegra's gaze lingered upon the vacant saddle, and she felt the sudden keen urge to ask why on Arceus' green earth this girl hadn't at the very least moved it. This looked dreadfully unsafe, to the extent that merely looking was enough to make her nervous. Still, judgement was terribly unbecoming; this strange arrangement clearly worked for the pair, and so it wasn't any of her business. She looked away, downwards, and stroked the scales of her Milotic.[break][break]

“Well, I hope you're enjoying the experience,” was all that Allegra said, with sincerity despite her misgivings. “Oh my, a Ranger? Quite the noble career path. I'm Allegra Burns, a coordinator, and this —” she gestured towards her own Milotic, “— is Adagio. It's a pleasure, Shalin, and of course Levy and Shadraz.”[break][break]

As the woman went on, though, her calm demeanor gave way first to curiosity and then to alarm. Not on her own behalf, no, as much as on Cadenza's. Surely the Primarina would know better than to go that far in alone, though... Surely.[break][break]

“Are you quite sure it's safe for an... exploration party to consist of so few people?” Allegra asked, remaining composed thanks to her many years of experience. “Although, even if it is, I have never ventured into ruins before... I will accompany you as I must reunite with my Primarina — but I can't guarantee that I will go all the way.”

It wasn't a surprise to see her eldest sister's latest single in this quaint records shop, not by any means; any music store worth a dime would have it in stock, not to mention every other release that bore the Fisk name. Nonetheless, it did sour Allegra's mood and kill any desire she might have had to browse the records herself. She walked away from that section, pivoting to the one on classical music, but as a matter of fact she didn't want to see her own face on display either.[break][break]

Allegra stood in the middle of the store, gripping her purse tightly enough that her knuckles turned bone-white, then exhaled as she came to a decision and walked up to the counter instead, the click of her heels resounding with purpose.[break][break]

“Good afternoon,” she said, flashing the shop owner a smile and making no mention of her role within his industry of choice. If he recognized her, whether from opera or orchestra, she would deal with it gracefully; if he didn't, well, she would be glad for it. “I'm looking for recommendations, if you have some time to spare.”

Now there was a sight that Allegra never thought she'd see: The other woman was riding a Milotic of her own, but she was perched atop its tail rather than behind its neck. Even Adagio was taken aback, his long form rippling beneath her as he shifted position, then let out a slight noise akin to a polite inquiry. That being the case, Allegra decided not to mention the matter herself. If both she and her Pokémon brought it up to their respective counterparts, it might well seem rude.[break][break]

“I suppose you could,” she said instead, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “But as I said, I am a lover of the sea and these caverns are simply amazing.” Perhaps she hadn't needed to reiterate that. Even her appearance brought to mind the ocean's depths, after all (and her mother, but she tried not to think of that and simply take pleasure in this aesthetically pleasing coincidence). All the same, she would never pass up a chance to declare her love for the saltwater. "What of you, madam? Are you an archaeologist? Or perhaps a professor?"

It was a beautiful day, with the skies almost entirely unclouded and cool winds blowing from the west; though it was perhaps too cold to go into the water — for a human, anyway; both Adagio and Cadenza had dived in already —, there were plenty of other ways to enjoy the beach, as evidenced by the many people sunbathing, building sandcastles or playing sports.[break][break]

For her part, Allegra was walking down the shore with her sandals in one hand and her feet in the shallows. A wave broke with more momentum than usual, not just kissing her ankles but wetting the hem of her dress, and she laughed softly. She delighted in the tide washing over her feet and the wind in her hair and the smell of salt just as much as she would have in diving.[break][break]

Turning away from the sight of the ocean to continue on her way, the coordinator became aware of another woman coming down to the shallows. She hoped the stranger hadn't seen her laugh at nothing — although, if she had, what harm was there in that? Famous violinist or no, she was no longer a Fisk; she could afford to be less than perfect. She should know it already, really, as that life was in the past. Old habits were just hard to shake. Still, the remembrance served to make Allegra's smile more genuine than it would have been otherwise.[break][break]

“Hello,” she said simply. “Lovely weather today, isn't it?”

As far as Allegra is concerned, this cavern is the loveliest place in all of Hoenn. Oh, to be sure, it faces stiff competition since the region boasts a wealth of breathtaking seascapes — and yet, there is something about this underwater sanctuary that she simply cannot find anywhere else; not even in the Water Routes, for all that she loves them.[break][break]

She takes her sweet time, then, to admire the sights and sounds of the caves. The reason they would be connected to a legendary Pokémon in the local myth and folklore is more than evident; even for a skeptic like her, it's all too easy to believe that this was the dwelling place of a living legend in ancient times. But then again, her skepticism has never applied to the wonders of the sea, has it?[break][break]

Smiling to herself, Allegra signals for her Milotic to swim onwards, which he does with slow elegance to let her continue enjoying the scenery. While Adagio is willing to carry his Trainer and move on command, ever-patient with her whims, the Primarina has already disappeared into the depths of the cavern. Not that the violinist blames her: Where Cadenza would have once been her inseparable companion, she herself drew away from the Soloist Pokémon in the wake of her fallout with the... Fisk Conglomerate. The matter of her own vocal issues was still raw (as it is now, if she's honest), and it became difficult for her to even be in Cadenza's presence for a long time; too long a time. If there is anything Allegra regrets, it is that: Their relationship has never fully recovered.[break][break]

Yet that is all years in the past and her Primarina is still dear to her, as she is to it; else it would not be with her at all. She ought to be enjoying the scenery and — perhaps more importantly — there is another human just ahead. Adagio halts and bows his head without the need for her to ask him to do so. He knows her well.[break][break]

“My,” is all Allegra says at first, her expression difficult to read even though she's smiling at the other woman. “I didn't expect to meet anyone else in this secluded place. Are you perhaps also a lover of the oceans?”

The Snake Pit is not a place that Allegra would ever set foot in if she had any choice in the matter; except, of course, that she isn't Allegra but rather Amaretta Irwin at the moment, and Amaretta likes this sort of bar well enough.[break][break]

There's more to her disguise — and to any other she might wear — than a simple change in preferences, though; more thanthe wig made of real silvery hair and the emerald contacts, though they no doubt help on a surface level. Yet a well-crafted persona must go deeper: Amaretta carries herself differently from Allegra, with a much colder demeanor; Amaretta’s grace is the grace of a knife's edge sharpened to perfection.[break][break]

She supposes that, for all of Noemi Fisk's wrongs, her tyrant of a mother did at least teach her some useful skills.
