Wild thread: Shoal Cave

Erin blinks a couple times, disconcerted at the level of care she receives from the stranger—or, rather, the lack of it. There's nothing directly rude about her answer, and Erin isn't particularly interested in what a stranger could think of her, but she sure isn't used to being disregarded.

She enters the cave after the girl and her golduck, and immediately realizes it's way larger than anything she had anticipated, going against all commonly accepted geological assumptions regarding sea caves.

Already she can tell that it was the right decision to take the time to come here, rather than import a specimen of ninetales from Alola. She just hopes she can make it back before the tide rises again.

She flicks another of her pokéballs open, allowing an aggron to take up the job Erin's recently recalled mantine previously had. An aggron may not be the fastest mount out there, but it's definitely better than traversing the cave on foot. He lifts her up to his shoulder.

Erin would have been perfectly content leaving the girl behind and going ahead with just her pokémon, but Avalon is a lot more gentlemanly than that. She watches silently as the aggron offers his other shoulder to her.

Whether or not she accepted the offer, they'd be well on their way down the cave when they spot a pair of wild pokémon.

The sarcasm is evident. His tone may be misleading, so hard to read it's evidently practiced, but Erin's behavior has been anything but delightful.

When she turns again, it's only partially. Just enough for her to hold his gaze in a half-hearted side glance. If she could hear his thoughts, her reaction would likely be much more different. As things stand, she only offers a curious "Is that so?"

She knows she can't afford to garner the man's attention any longer, yet there she is, doing nothing to end the conversation.

In her mind, two paths lay before her. She could keep trying to ignore him and most likely keep failing because if there's one thing Erin can't stand it's not getting the last word in an argument. On the other hand, giving in meant he'd get what he wanted and would therefore have nothing else to talk to her about.

Erin doesn't think her own joke is all that funny, but she'll let the mysterious man think what he wants of it. He definitely seems to have a penchant for theatrics that she could sometimes share. For now, a smirk is all she offers him.

"How old are you, forty? I don't accept juvenilizing nicknames from anyone younger than my parents." Perhaps she shouldn't be poking too much fun, but this was too good an exchange not to retort to with a cheeky grin.

She has no complaints about moving to a more private location. In fact, Erin would have preferred to skip the few minutes wasted until the man found her. Her feet follow gladly, though not before she calls her gengar out. For good measure.

It's subtle, really. The pokémon materializes not in a cloud of toxins, but into a translucent state that quickly shifts into transparency. Into a fake transparency, rather. The gengar is now hiding in the shadows.

Honestly, Erin isn't all that worried. It's true that the man didn't give the most trustworthy of impressions, but an appearance and attitude as flashy were unlikely to go unnoticed if he were to be an actual serial killer. As for any eavesdroppers, she trusts her pokémon to deal with any that follow.

It's all trash to her. Old phones, a tiny power bank, a digital wrist watch, and a lighter that won't start even the smallest of flames. They could all be given new uses in Rocket, for sure, but they're all such boring finds. Even if she could—she, in fact, can—repurpose bits and pieces of each device for new creations, she much prefers working with brand new parts.

Erin turns the small device in her hand. What is the deal with this thing, either way? Siri had specifically filtered their scans for radiation levels. Traditional lighters have none of that.

A thoughtless answer is sent their way. The exact words formulated on her lips are forgotten as soon as they take their exit. It's probably just another no.

She opens the lighter once more. Her index finger finds a button on its side, imperceptible save for the thin line separating it from the rest of body. She presses it and nothing happens. A closer inspection of the device's side reveals what would have immediately struck her as a screen, had it been turned on.

Unfortunately, the electric lighter's battery is out.

She dumps it next to the phones and the watch and the power bank that had by then multiplied to two. Her gaze is fixed on the small hoard of devices lying next to her feet when she speaks up again. "Anyone have a bag to put these all in?" They definitely don't fit inside her purse.

This excuse doesn't convince her, but she's willing to play along for now. While the man downs yet another glass, Erin sets her own drink aside and rests her cheek on her open palm, in turn propped up on top of the counter. She's about to ask him something else when he decides to finally talk about what had him troubled.

It's likely a slip, courtesy of the many grades of alcohol he'd already taken in. If not for the 'she' that escaped his lips, Erin would have thought he was still talking about his list of male exes.

"Just moved in; figured I'd give the night life here a look."

She doesn't have a reason as dramatic as the blond's, and even if she did she doubts she'd be able to tell him freely. Erin's learned the hard way not to talk about herself. So she brings the matter back to him.

"Has it been working, then? Trying to forget the pain by drinking?" She looks at him as if she already knew the answer. In a sense, she does. How many nights had she spent trying to escape from her own demons, all those years ago? It never made her feel any better. "Or are you hoping an etilic coma does it for you?"

Erin turns her gaze away, towards the bartender. A quick gesture relays the message that she wants another of the same drink he'd been asking for. This man would be having no more whiskey until she allowed it, but that doesn't apply to herself.

"Sounds to me like you dodged a bullet there. Women who like to play around will ruin your life, later if not sooner. You just saved yourself time on top of a lot more pain."

Lucius's idea of testing out his new arm differed from Erin's by a large margin. That much was evident from the moment the door to her suite closed shut behind them, roughly fifteen minutes ago. Misunderstandings are not all that uncommon with her pragmatic and most often unilateral approach to life, Erin has to admit. However, today's was a funny one.

"We can grab dinner after this," she offers. She's not particularly hungry yet; but she's certain that, if he is now, he'd be even hungrier after their 'test drive', as he called it.

A volbeat comes out one of her pokéballs, shaking his rear until the

glow of its tail

lights up their path, in conjunction with the setting sun. Mostly, it would be leading some wild pokémon their way. The volbeat hops inside a forested area, off the main road.

"Plenty of ghost sightings around here. Makes for good target practice. We're here for something a little different today, though."

They arrive at a forest clearing after a few minutes. Normally, a proper gym would be her first choice for a session of this type, but Erin doesn't want more curious eyes fluttering around than strictly necessary.

Erin stops right below a tree, thick trunk and low branches. She points up to one of these branches. "Can you grab onto it?"

Nature has a way of providing people who know what to look for with whatever they may need.

Erin notices, of course. The camera makes no giveaway clicking sound, but Lucius himself doesn't seem to be making any efforts to hide his action. It doesn't particularly bother her, either way. Hoenn is a liberating place in the sense that she doesn't have to worry about news reporters flashing lights in her face and asking about her dad.

It's a rhetoric question. The truth is, even if he hadn't taken her picture then, he would eventually have found out her number through the calls she'd have to give him in order to schedule check-ups and maintenance sessions for his metal arm.

"We?" she repeats, eyebrows rising in surprise. Though Erin wasn't expecting it, the offer is considered briefly. After spending literal days pretty much shut in this room working on the arm, she decides an outing wouldn't be half bad.

She motions for Lucius to start walking towards the door while she hurries inside another room. A belt is picked up first and quickly wrapped around her oversized shirt, making it look like a dress. A pair of ribbons wrap around her ankles too, this time courtesy of her pokémon's

telekinesis

. Last but not least, she grabs her hand purse.

Just before she steps out the suite, Erin calls for her Porygon2's attention. "Be back later, Siri. Take care of 24K while I'm gone."

Once upon a time, people had to physically come to the cave's entrance to check whether the tide was low enough or high enough to reach whichever path they wanted to venture on. Tide clocks were created some time later, which eased some of the burden, though not entirely.

Now, she only needs to check the Mossdeep Nature app on her smartphone to calculate the exact time she needs to arrive to climb down to the Shoal Cave's one and only ice floor.

Erin steps off her mantine with grace very unlike that of her first time surfing, not too long ago. They say practice makes perfect, and that's never been more true than with the ambitious young woman.

Once upon a time, ancient tribes may have used this as a community building. Right now, only dragon-type pokémon remain. "First time up here," she answers simply as a beautiful serpent-like specimen made its way to their small party.

The contrast between Kenneth's words and his tone makes her grin. "All yours." She doesn't have to wonder what he'd have done if she said no, but the thought still amuses her.

While the silver-haired man got down to the dragonair's capture, Erin takes the time to inspect what seem to be markings on the walls. They're very light, eroded away by time, almost indiscernible. Exactly how old could these be?

The markings vaguely point towards a small opening farther back, and she follows the path with unconcealed interest. Until she finds what the map led to: an impossibly shallow catacomb. Erin grimaces at the sight before speaking up again. Hopefully Kenneth would be about done with the dragonair then.

A flicker. Purple. Singular. Erin recognizes the flame immediately: it's one of the pokémon she was looking for. She doesn't wait for it to go completely out of hiding before she begins strategizing. The litwick is still moving down the cave, slowly and seemingly unaware of their pressence.

All the better. She supposes its flickering flame in general serves more as a signal for its position than as a way to light up its path.

"Do you reckon it dies if its flame goes out?" she asks her Porygon2. The pokémon answers with a robotic voice, a largely unintelligible screech. Over the years Erin's learned to take this type of sound to be a yes. "Pity."

She turns to the kingdra. "

dragon pulse

may have been harsh, repeated orbs of concentrated energy fired off without mercy. Her

bubble beam

is much more gentle, but shot with the same force. Anything less would have stayed within the confines of her small floating aquarium.

The litwick notices them then. It tries to fire a

will-o-wisp

at its assailant, the kingdra, but the water surrounding it serves as a protective wall against this time of move. The wisp pushes in but doesn't make it til the end: the kingdra goes unharmed. She does feel a slightly hotter current, at least.

It has fight in it, even if it relied mostly on experience to react. Erin considers their next move. She doesn't want to hurt a pokémon that would soon become her property, but a litwick is made out of wax and wax could easily be reshaped.

The blast melts away some of the litwick's edges, before focusing on one spot of the litwick's sides. Siri, her Porygon2, helps with a

aimed at the other. Together, they manage to pin it down long enough for Erin to toss a pokéball at it.

Silas's next words are what really get her. "You will?" she asks with an amused tilt of her head, prompting him to go on. She can't begin to imagine how exactly he plans to do that, but Erin's willing to see this through to the end.

This path is known to house poison pokémon as much as fire ones. To say she didn't expect to come across a few of the first would have been naïve. Erin was hunting specifically for a couple of fire types, however. This encounter comes as a bit of a disappointment.

She fully intends to ignore the drapion and its accordion-like appendages, but that's not the case with the pokémon in question. The drapion claps its pincers, readying itself for an assault.

Being one of the most recently caught additions to her team, the kingdra hasn't yet been fully trained in the workings of her trainer's mind. She needs guidance on what actions to take.

Not so much on how to go about shooting at the drapion, though. The kingdra aims and her makeshift fishbowl stretches around her

dragon pulse

. It creates a momentary opening for the drapion to attempt a counterattack, but Erin doesn't let it. "Again."

If the kingdra's first attack was like a bullet coming out a shotgun, singular and with recoil, its next ones would be more like a machine gun's. She angles the continuous attacks sideways as the party begins to move on.
