Bodyguard huh? She certainly didn’t strike Eva as the type to be interesting in doing so but perhaps that was a failing on Eva’s part to assume such a thing. When compared to other rockets, Songbird was definitely a breath of a fresh air.

Both in the literal sense because some of these nasty bastards didn’t know what a bar of soap was, seriously what was up with that. And in the figurative seeing as how pleasant and kind she was, which ultimately was either really suspicious or comforting to have someone like that around to cut through the filth.

”Oh right. Must be a lot having to deal with both that life and juggling that with rocket as well. Hopefully, we find something to make the time worth it.” Eva was one to talk about leading dual lives. While they weren’t that separate it would still be a pain in the ass for her public persona to be connected to this criminal underworld she worked in.

Unlike the one next to her, Eva didn’t have so many personal and intimate relationships like siblings and family that she held close to the chest. And as Songbird would then go and describe, it sounded like a pain in the ass so Eva was glad she didn’t have to bother with that drama.

”It’s all well and nice until some suit starts bugging you about your projects or wants you to do something like cure all diseases or invent some sort of infinite energy.” Eva jokingly explained with a bit of a groan at the end. ”But I do love my work.” Which begged the question.

”I’m assuming music is what you love, no? Your passion. Would you have rather not getting involved with Rocket and just focusing on that? Why did you join?” She knew why she was here, but why her?

Another attempt at adding Pokémon to her team which would hopefully go down smoother than the last few attempts which while weren’t necessarily complete wastes of her time they just didn’t offer Eva anything she wanted to add to her team.

She was definitely tempted a few times but there were specific Pokémon that she was looking for and she was at least for now going to stay vigilant and save her empty capsules for the ones that she truly wanted. But maybe this time she would be more open minded about what she ran into and be more willing to capture whatever.

”Alright Artemis, as usual, keep an eye out.” Eva spoke, her Gardevoir nodding in response.

The way the cave’s layout changed depending the time of day and the corresponding tide level in relation to that was interesting, nothing groundbreaking or that revolutionary but an interesting quirk of the cave and the region as a whole in of itself.

Eva was here to see how that sort of thing affected the Pokémon and what sort of Pokémon thrived in this environment. Of course there was already data on that but with how things went nowadays there wasn’t much telling what Pokémon actually showed up and which might have migrated out. Hoenn has had quite the changes to its environment.

She was not alone during her expedition; Eva had requested that Songbird accompany her. Why exactly? Well if Eva was busy working on her research the last thing she wanted was for unwanted hooligans to bother her so that’s where her friend would come in.

That and Eva was pretty sure the woman was trying to add more Pokémon to her collection and this was her destination so it worked out anyway. ”Right here should be good.” The dark-haired woman spoke, stopping her walking. ”Typically Spheal and their evolution line was found here but let’s see what it’s like now.”

”Is it that obvious?” Eva responded to the voice that came from behind, her eyes meeting the figure’s approach starting from their corners as the person came into view from the side. ”Nice to see you, Songbird.” She’d add, giving the red-head a nod. Now at least she had some better company, or at least company that was easy to put a name to the face. And the air surrounding the girl that was brought with her was in stark contrast to Eva’s seemingly dourer mood. What in the world could she be so chipper about? This was quite curious.

Her question garnered a half-hearted shrug as a response from Eva before she answered verbally. ”Don’t get me wrong I’d love for us to find a mega stone I just doubt that our search here will be fruitful is all.” The scientist responded, watching the work that was being done nearby. She let out a sigh before shaking her head.

”It’s quite alright. Making sure these fools don’t screw anything up is more important.” Eva began, scratching the back of her head as she continued. ”And you make a good point, better to strike while the iron’s hot before we have the League up our ass. Is that why you decided to join in this little escapade? Cash in on the spoils?”

Eva was extremely skeptical about the idea of a bunch of morons deciding that they’d find mega stones if they went digging in one of the region’s famous caves. It wasn’t surprising that this was the response to the discovery of the stones.

It was as if someone was dangling a carrot in front of a Rapidash’s face on a stick and string that they just couldn’t reach. The chance to get something to power your Pokémon to unknown levels was definitely alluring. And that sort of power should be put into the right hands, not the hands of some random miner who’d probably end up getting robbed of it anyway.

Much to her annoyance a lot of Rockets wanted to get in on the craze and decided to go on their own little spelunking escapade which she somehow got dragged into. The idea was that if anyone could identify what they were looking for and verify that they hit the jackpot it would be her.

While the logic was sound Eva really didn’t want to be bothered with it, having little faith in the endeavors probability of turning a profit but at least she was being paid regardless of what happened. And the money would go straight into her research.

The commotion had got the attention of another Pokémon, a Rapidash appeared as curiosity took the better of it. The Pokémon was at first tense, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. ”Well aren’t you a pretty one.” Eva approached the fire horse without hesitation, confidence in each step as she inched closer.

The Rapidash took a step back at first which caused Soleil to be on edge, the Volcarona extremely protective of her master. ”I’m not here to hurt you.” Her voice was gentle, calming the Pokémon down enough to let her approach and stroke its neck.

”That’s a good girl.” Eva enjoyed the encounter for a bit longer before letting the Rapidash go. ”What a beautiful Pokémon.” she mused. Now it was time to move on to the next one.

The first Pokémon to bother her was one of those as people would say “annoying flying vermin” that were typically found in caves. While annoying to many Eva was neutral when it came to this species of Pokémon.

They had their uses, especially their evolved form but they could get annoying as hell when you’re just trying to get from one place to another and these damn things won’t leave you alone. It’s as if you have a homing beacon on you attuned to the bats’ frequency calling it to annoy the ever loving shit out of you until you go mad.

She imagined some sort of twisted sick game would be to have these things constantly spawn and attack people in a game. Give them a real high encounter rate in an area that was hard if not impossible to avoid encounters. Oh yeah, that would definitely piss off a whole lot of people.

And it would seem that this Golbat’s goal in life was to annoy Eva. ” Soleil, be a dear and get rid of it.” Eva shooed the Golbat away as her Volcarona unleashed a Heat Wave attack, frying the Golbat.

”Much better.” She smiled as she stepped over the fried body of the bat and kept moving.

This sort of environment was typically insufferable to many people but for Eva it was fantastic. She loved the heat and so did her lovely Volcarona that accompanied her into the Fiery Path, another trip to see what sort of Pokémon Hoenn was being home to.

The last few trips were quite interesting in terms of the variety of Pokémon that were typically found their origins in other regions. This wasn’t too unusual, you found examples of this in other regions but Hoenn hadn’t been one to show too much variety until recent memory. Quite the interesting phenomenon, it was why she was here.

That and she wanted to, of course, add more members to her team. ” Let’s see what we can find.”

She was in a pretty good mood after that encounter with the Zorua, seeing how adorable the Pokémon was. This was why the next Pokémon that she ran into was such a mixed bag. It was an Alolan Meowth, an interesting find given the Pokémon’s typical origin.

While that was interesting but on the other hand, this little feline was a smug piece of shit who was doing it’s very best to piss Eva off in some way. Whether it was the looks it was given her or the fact that it thought it was cute to use payday.

Eva fixed this problem with the help of her Volcarona, the bug Pokémon terrifying the living hell out of the cat enough to cause it to run off. ”So long you little shit.”

Almost as soon as she passed the first Pineco another popped up, though this one seemingly more interested in Eva than the other one. It was a bit suspicious that it was so eager to get her attention, they typically weren’t like that. When she leaned down to interact with the bug it changed forms into a Zorua, a shit-eating grin plastered on its face.

It was an attempt to spook her or even annoy her but instead she laughed. ”Aren’t you just the cutest thing!” The little fox was terrible adorable and Evan couldn’t help but pet the Pokémon as she spoke.

This wasn’t the reaction that the Zorua wanted but it did appreciate the attention. ”I’ll have to play with you some other time.” And with that it was on to the next one.

As Eva traveled deeper into the route the first Pokémon she would encounter was that of a Pineco. An interesting fine, Pineco with the right management are quite useful and wonderful additions to any team. With that in mind it was quite tempting to Eva to capture the bug type and add it to her team but alas she decided against it.

She carefully made her way past the Pineco, aware of some of their dispositions to make themselves explode. Getting caught in one of those wasn’t a part of the plan and it would be even worse if it started a chain.

”Maybe next time.” She commented, moving deeper into the route.

Contrary to what would probably be a popular belief about someone in Eva’s profession she could enjoy a setting like this. She wasn’t all that much of a fan of how unsanitary the place was and some of the patrons were annoying as hell but the entertainment could offer some fun and that was most important.

Even if she did think more often than not the performers were a bit lacking in the skill department. Their showmanship could also use a bit more work too, but what’d she expect from underground cage fighting. You came here to watch people fight, not put on some elaborate play.

As the referee worked the crowd Eva watched patiently, waiting for the situation to get settled so there would be more matches. But maybe this was a sign to get back to work, she had plenty to do. The decision wouldn't be one to easily make as she was called out by the referee.

He'd be right on the money, she was excited about this. She thought of it as being a fun exercise, let her babies stretch their legs and let loose, it'd be great. And given the way these fights went, she didn't need to be worried if someone accidentally broke.

"Oh I'd love to!" Eva stood up from her seat and made her way toward the caged ring. "Let's put on a good show." She'd smile at the referee.
