Adrian felt disgusting from the sweat and the grime of detritus, but he could ill afford to focus on that now—instead invoking a power to help push back this strange, paradoxical foe.[break][break]

"Furor, let's go!" Adrian raised a keystone on his wrist that began shimmering, and Gyarados seemed to synchronize with him, its scales glittering with a rising intensity as mega evolution began to take hold—[break][break]

But they would have been interrupted if not for Howard's quick thinking. Regice was a formidable foe, and as it intervened, Adrian took heart in the fact that Howard has not abandoned him to fight alone. While the legendary regi grappled with the frenzied beast's thrashing, Furor finished the transformation—bulking and armoring its body with scaly protectorates.[break][break]

"Now finish it." As the creature was tossed towards Gyarados, its gaping maw was ready to receive; the raptor's diminutive form found itself wedged between Furor's teeth, gnawing and gnashing... The inside of its mouth would be lacerated from the trouble, regardless of the Walking Wake's muffled protests...[break][break]

When it spat out the creature, it was mangled and broken, though not quite lifeless.[break][break]

Adrian felt the whole world going still and quiet as he watched the creature, wondering if it was truly over or just a moment's respite.

In the aftermath, Adrian would find fresh air relieving the ache in his lungs. What a mess... While everything might have ended as well as he could've hoped—something else was wrong here, entirely. But he can only make note of this as he observe's Josh' wistful farewell; souls with an eerie glow, ephemeral by their nature, flitted through the air as they egressed.

Why would Yveltal trap souls here, and not see them move on?

"...You're welcome..." It was strange accepting their gratitude.

Gyarados would feel the tension hanging in the air around its trainer, leering at the others, though as Adrian managed to take a few steps backwards, the creature betrayed no signs of aggression. But before they could clear earshot, Adrian couldn't help chuckling as the two salvaged what they could from this incident. Never a passed opportunity...

"Thomas..." He tried to think of comforting words of reassurance, but there could be none. So instead he found himself expressing what was likely a shared opinion, after today's events.

"Something went wrong here... We should try to find out why."

Locking eyes with them, he hoped it was clear; they should both try to understand this development from their respective sides. Why had Yveltal petrified these departed souls? It was almost dysfunctional, and he could only imagine what other problems may arise from a force of nature running itself off the rails. There were too many enemies to Hoenn who might've had a hand in this matter for him to pinpoint any one...

It was all much too chaotic for him to follow along—but he is gladdened to see Furor responding to his commands, its tail managing to wallop the shard of Yveltal during the tumult. It falls from out of the sky, and manages to clumsily grace Josh with another contact—unwittingly freeing him. Neither he nor Thomas would immediately respond.

Adrian distances himself from the combat, and Gyarados does not advance recklessly. Thomas' pokemon thrash and wail on the beast, relentless in their zealotry. He suspected Thomas wouldn't hesitate to sic them on him, once they removed the existing threat.

The statues affected by the battle tremble and break, shattering with the heavy impacts of their battling. Adrian feels fear for Josh, though rather than act emboldened, he retreats—fearing the power Yveltal brandishes so brazenly... But that does not mean he cannot attack

"Thomas, call them off," Adrian manages to bark out while crossing his arms in front of his chest, accompanied by a strange geometric shape emanating shadows on his wrist, as Gyarados shimmers faintly like amethyst: Invoking this power, he hoped to help banish the creature away, and buy them some time...

"ALRIGHT, FUROR: BLACK HOLE ECLIPSE!"[break][break]

[break][break]

From out of its maw, a light-eating aura appeared before being violently ejected, hurtling across the field before approaching Yveltal. There the manifestation surged, its energy resonating in a violent surge as it expanded, drowning them in darkness. As if veiled in some benighted gossamer, everything seemed drawn into the hole—the shard of Yveltal most of all.

Adrian feels a chill that makes him eager to return to shelter, though his pokemon seem less deterred, though they throw cautious gazes towards Shadow Lugia's aria. While they continue their work, setting traps with STEALTH ROCKS and fortifying the embankment, Adrian is forced to contend with the elements.[break][break]

Fingers drag along his arms, fighting against the chill, but he cannot help but shiver. Meetings, huh? Admittedly, Adrian had done very little in his capacity as Rocket Beast. He's not surprised however, yet he wonders...[break][break]

"Guess I'll just wait to see, then."[break][break]

He's filled with dread anticipation. A choice will have to be made, and consequently Adrian must live with it. Though he is already chosen sides, he cannot help wondering where his interests are best served. Having crossed the threshold, they are met with a shadowy interloper. Piercing scarlet eyes and an unsettling cackle welcome Adrian and Tempest, though the former is ill prepared—he cannot see where it's come from.[break][break]

As the disembodied voice lobbed a shadowy orb at them, Greninja acted swiftly, slapping a palm to the ground that caused a barrier to erect in the form of mats offering a buffer between Adrian and the incoming attack. The defensive bulwark holds under the pressure, but the construct buckles just as quickly as the energy dissipates. So where is it?![break][break]

"I can't see a damned thing," he curses.

Nodding along with Howard's initial idea, he saw the potential. But their second notion, stemming from the first, seemed to resonate more with Adrian's own thoughts. If Regirock was searching here, it might not be interested in Regice itself—but the Wishing Stars...[break][break]

While they were walking along, Adrian noticed the debris clattering around them. But just as he went to look up, Howard rushed him—shouting abruptly. Where he might've expected to hear a shuddering of crushing stone bearing down, they instead heard a geyser of gushing water. The air around them felt humid, steamy—it was uncomfortable.[break][break]

It takes a moment to shake off the disorientation of his fall, but eventually Adrian does, before then looking to the creature dropping down from the bluffs. Howards mouths the words run, but from his prone position Adrian thinks better than to try.[break][break]

"Wouldn't get far..." He hacks, rummaging for his pokeballs. A shit-eating smirk spreads across his face when he feels that familiar sharkskin texture of a weathered pokeball dragging under his fingertips...[break]

In a burst of crimson radiant, Furor emerges from its pokeball, its massive body a buffer between them.[break][break]

Adrian manages to shove Howard off of him, clambering to his knees before finding his footing.[break][break]

Furor's lumbering head swings back to catch his eyes in a hard stare—only to find the creature's malice mirrored in his own—before turning its toothy maw back towards the aggressor. A roar erupts from Furor that only Adrian resists shying away from.[break][break]

Walking Wake bellows back. Both lurch forward violently—Walking Wake the quicker of the two.[break][break]

"Crush 'em, Furor!" As the raptor darts nimbly, Furor is forced to react defensively, bringing its tail out in front of itself as the dinosaur lunges forward, latching onto its scaly hide with claws that catch and rake. Gyarados' tail thrashes in the painful throes.[break][break]

...But then Furor leveraged its weight, winding back its tail before smashing it against the nearby cavern wall, mashing the draconid between stone-and-scale.[break][break]

'...What the Hell is that thing, anyways...?'

Adrian tried to follow after him slowly, but his chest felt tight as rock closed in on all sides; ahead of him was Tempest, behind him was Greninja. Every light snag or bump of rock made his heart race—what if he got stuck between them? Would Greninja be able to pull him back out, or Tempest to pull him through...?[break][break]

Thankfully, neither of those questions needed answered as they emerged into a small trench of water, though he was still smothered in that opressing darkness until Tempest released a Lanturn. Thank goodness for that...[break][break]

Aside from the brine, the air smelled... stale. Making light paddles towards the only bit of land there was, Adrian dragged himself up, taking a moment to look around: It was a mess of a place, everything was rusted and worn, and only spare pieces of plank or tarp covered what might've been a door.[break][break]

Hardly seemed to be anything valuable here.[break][break]

"Couldn't be me." He'd have gone crazy down here.[break][break]

Greninja was able to follow them in. As Adrian had left his torch in his satchel back on the boat, he could only search by the glow of Lanturn's light. Running a hand over the contents of the table, none of it seemed worth salvaging. He offered a shrug to Tempest, before turning his attention to the ramshackle door barring entry to the adjacent room. Tilting his head towards it, he asked the other:[break][break]

"Whaddaya suppose is in there?" Without much pause, Adrian made a go for the door without much consideration, thinking them to be alone down here...

Adrian wasn't sure there was any coming back for Josh. Eyes wide from shock, he finds himself stunned by the beast's prowess in battle. As for his Coalossal...

"You stupid oaf, move!" For a moment Coalossal seemed to pay him heed, but it neglected to carry out his orders even after. Adrian finally relieved the pokemon of duty, cramming its pokeball back onto his waist before reaching for Furor's own pokeball—the rough texture of its metal casing feeling familiar.

"FUROR, GO!" he cried out vainly.[break][break]

Eyes narrowing on Yveltal, the Gyarados called upon vivid memories of this creature—freeing it from the clutches of the Ultra Beast Nihilego during the Megalopolan invasion. Their interference has helped to balance the scales of that fateful encounter...[break][break]

Furor turns to Adrian, but hears nothing—his muted gestures and flailings lost on the creature. But they share a BOND that cannot be obfuscated by tricks. In its heart, Furor feels the fury, the outrage overwhelming Adrian.[break][break]

Gyarados would be his strength.

A hissing sound rose into a fiendish snarl, before the air shuddered with the Gyarados' roar. Its tail pounded against the ground in threat display, its mere presence tormenting the shard of Yveltal. Stygian fangs bared, it began to maneuver towards them, its body undulating as it slithered along its flank...[break][break]

Adrian had not given the command—but he felt confident in Gyarados. "Dragon Tail, Furor!"[break][break]

If the creature heard him, he wouldn't know until...

Packing down and molding the soft earth like clay, Adrian's pokemon moved on to different sections of the project, while he and Gavin were able to continue commiserating.[break][break]

"Perhaps not." He wasn't going to force it.[break][break]

While they labored away at the project, Adrian found himself staring out towards the direction of Ever Grande. How will you go about it, I wonder...?[break][break]

He did not want to entertain the thought of conflict—but it would be upon them in short order. And while they made their preparations, Adrian would not be prepared the moment fighting broke out. He could say the words, perform the necessary rituals...[break][break]

...But his heart wasn't in the work.[break][break]

How long can you keep this going, Adrian?[break][break]

He might've been daydreaming, but eventually something snapped him out of it. The sun loomed overhead oppressively, and Adrian felt the faint veneer of sweat building up on his forehead. The seabreeze could only afford small waves of relief, and he knew he'd end up cooking out here if he wasn't careful not to find shade sooner or later.[break][break]

"...I know you're going to hate hearing this, but..." Adrian chewed on the words tactfully.[break][break]

"...What if we have to surrender the city?"[break][break]

Adrian could tell Howard seemed less than inspired by his answers; Adrian had done more to build the legend around Regirock with his words than to illustrate a solution. Thinking back to when they had brought the creature to heel, he considered summing up the underlying solution to their triumph over Regirock:[break][break]

"...Back then, we flooded the arena with water, and based our final attacks around that. In doing so, we might've slowed down its movements, and given our type-effective attacks an environmental advantage..." It was a strategy that might have saved them the heartache if they'd have gone with it from the beginning—but at the time they were a disorganized mess.[break][break]

"But practice never hurt anybody's chances." If Howard was so poorly convinced of his own strength, it might do him good to test it—and see how he measured up against others. He might surprise himself someday. Howard is wracked with a cough briefly, before suggesting an ambush.[break][break]

"Could be." Adrian had wanted to try a similar approach with the DRK Triad before—lure them in somewhere, and trap them—but had never been given the chance. Perhaps they had given up on him, then.[break][break]

Oh well. Adrian had more confidence it could work with Regirock anyways. He nodded, turning his attention towards the crystalline chasm.[break][break]

Fine, don't answer me. It was not in Adrian's nature to take a snub lightly. Welcome as the relief was that came from Thomas' silence, there was precious little to do with it. While he might've prepared to hurl his own verbal retort, a cry went out from the once muted man's mouth; he felt himself growing cold just then, as the words reached him. No—

His eyes search the skies overhead incredulously, where he can see for himself the three-pronged silhouette descending halphazardly towards them, his pupils shrinking as a faint tremble overtook him. Why are you here now...!? Even without Howitzer at his side, the beast saw fit to terrorize them—he casts his gaze toward Thomas and Josh. Is it them...?

Grasping at a pokeball along his belt, Adrian releases... Coalossal. That'll do. It's less important what he sends out, but that it's sent out—offering a buffer between him and oblivion. But as the daemon descends, it is Buzzswole that it tests its might against—and overwhelms. A stony effigy of the insectoid remains, an as-yet-souless husk of itself. Shit.

"Coalossal, SMACK DOWN!" Adrian speaks with sudden conviction, but his pokemon does not act. It's as though his words have not reached it. While he finds himself annoyed, he cannot fathom a cause—and so he repeats himself emphatically:

"COALOSSAL, SMACK DOWN! ..."[break][break]

Yet there was nothing he could do. His words failed to move the creature to action, and so Yveltal freely razed the clearing-turned-battlefield.

"...What the hell is this..." Adrian watches helplessly, unable to make his pokemon budge. It's unlike anything he'd ever encountered, and between this and how neither had answered him before—he has to wondered whether he's lost his voice. No, I'm not hallucinating my own voice... It defied all reason, but he hadn't the time to ponder over it—

"Get in there, dammit!"[break][break]

Adrian punched the Coalossal, earning himself the ache along his knuckles, but the creature did little to acknowledge him. I can't believe this... Do I have to do this myself? The world had gone mad.

"GET AWAY FROM THEM, YOU WRETCH!" Without much recourse, Adrian could only hurtle words at the creature—perhaps hoping he could reach it in some way. Perhaps the bond they'd shared might earn them a moment's respite, to understand this senseless assault, and perhaps avert it—[break][break]

But there was nothing.[break][break]

The pact between had been broken forevermore.[break][break]

And again he had been made to feel powerless.

He can only roll his eyes. Perhaps he hadn't exactly gotten his point across, or many of these realizations came as nothing new. He could only surrender to their insight, though he fostered a curiosity. Perhaps Regirock was trying to gorge itself on any present power, now that an old threat had been reawakened...[break][break]

Dynergy, then. It only made sense.[break][break]

"It might not want them, now that they're fragmented." When the housing unit had been struck, perhaps they had leaked their power, or could not serve their purpose correctly—such as a capacitor that could no longer hold as great a charge. Regirock would have fought for the shards back then, but may have found them defunct.[break][break]

Or had simply already filled the void.[break][break]

Adrian is conflicted at the thought of Regirock toppling Ever Grande, however. Howard may notice the smile he forced contradicted the troubled crinkle of his brow.[break][break]But no more.[break][break]

A small huff of laughter seems to suggest he'd enjoy that, too. He's full glad when Howard changes the pace of the conversation to something he's more comfortable discussing.

"You mean other than not letting it squish you," he quipped with a shit-eating grin.[break][break]

"In all seriousness..." Adrian sighed.[break][break]

"It took a concerted effort to reduce Regirock from its empow— dynamaxed state. Meanwhile, it KO'd everything indiscriminately." He paused, reflecting on it more.[break][break]

"Obviously the scale and intensity of its attacks was devastating. But more than anything, it was deceptively fast."[break][break]

Adrian realized these weren't really answers—but they were strong considerations. These Regis were not so easily brought down, and so he wanted them to understand that a battle with them would be protracted. He would have to simply outlast them.[break][break]

"If you're going to fight it, you can't hold back anything. Z-Moves, Mega Evolution; anything and everything..." Adrian glances towards them, hoping they could fill in the blank: Dynamax, Terastallization; all of it brought to bear.[break][break]

"Exploit its weaknesses, use the environment. And if you can dodge, try that before defending against a direct attack" Adrian was not confident most pokemon could defend against the Titan's unbridled might—trying might be suicidal.
